Winner Winner Chicken Dinner

Yesterday marked the end of voting for the Book Cosplay Contest! Watching the votes come in was a super fun experience. For a while I thought that one book cosplay was going to win and then BAM! another book cosplay was on the rise. The upcoming issue of "Clean Fiction" magazine will feature all six of the book cosplays that participated, but today I would like to announce the top three. So without further ado...

In third place we have a wonderful gentleman and writer Hans L. Erdman with his book cosplay of Bishop Padraigh from his book "Truthbearer: The Journeys of Connor Clark".

In second place we have an adorable little man Levi with his book cosplay of the Conductor from "The Polar Express".

NOW, the moment you have all been waiting for! Drum roll please! (brbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbrbr) The winner of the Winter 2021 "Clean Fiction" Book Cosplay Contest is... PAM HALTER with her book cosplay of Tzmet from her book "Fairyeater"! If you are interested in purchasing Pam's book, visit PamHalter.com or Love2ReadLove2Write.com It is also available on Amazon as an Ebook or Paperback.

God is in Control

There is so much going on this week. I have been so blessed to be connecting with so many authors and publishers lately. There will definitely be plenty to fill both the November and March editions. The plan going forward is that if both the Winter and Spring editions are well received I will move forward with a Summer or Fall Edition. This would give readers 3 editions per year to enjoy.

Looking to the future can be daunting. With everything I am also responsible for, I honestly do not know how I am able to do this in the first place, but the Lord is providing. Have you ever experienced something like this? The Lord pushing you, stretching your abilities, encouraging you that He has something more for you. Psalm 46 talks about how the Lord gives us strength in times of trouble, but what about strength to complete your purpose? Whenever I feel unsure or weak when it comes to the way forward, I remember that the Lord is in control. Not just of the grand sweeping gestures of the world, but of the tiny details of every existence. How tiny does a detail have to be to be beyond the Lord's notice? The truth? There is nothing too tiny. The very molecules of the cells of your body are not beyond His notice. That type of control is both awe inspiring and comforting.

If God is in control of everything down to the very building blocks of existence, then if He asks it of you, you can be confident that He will provide.

Cover Reveal Day!

(To View the Cover Visit CleanFictionMagazine.com)

Today is the day! Here is the beautiful cover for the first edition of Clean Fiction Magazine. This is an acrylic illustration that I painted myself. In the future, I would love to have others vie to have their illustration/art on the cover, but for now we are a strictly DIY operation. Thankfully the Lord has blessed me with the ability to do many things well, though I admit that I am not "the best" at ANYTHING. Jane of All Trades, Master of None. This painting has a very special place in my heart. Not only did it take a solid two weeks to paint (the longest I have ever spent on a painting), but it also is by far the best I have been able to create. My illustrative capabilities are usually more successful in the children's book realm. Another reason this painting has meaning to me is that it is a painting of the main character of my debut novel. Originally I was going to use this for the cover of the book itself, but I was advised that it would not work for that purpose. When I decided to give Clean Fiction Magazine an modern art deco motif, I knew just the art piece that would go with it!

I am also pleased to announce the OFFICIAL LAUNCH DATE of Clean Fiction Magazine!

NOVEMBER 20TH, 2021

I would like to thank those of you who expressed interest in being on the Launch Team for Clean Fiction Magazine. If you are interested in helping get the word out about Clean Fiction, feel free to message me on Facebook, Instagram, or email me at CleanFictionMagazine@gmail.com . Frustration

I was so frustrated this week. I had read around 18 hours into a promising trilogy only for the last book in the set to earn itself two more of the three strikes I allow. Strikes you say? What does that mean? I go by a three strike rule when I am reading a book. This was a practice I started way before I started to write reviews. Three strikes and YOU'RE OUT...or in this case, I will not read any more of the book. I would give books strikes for dropping God attacking expletives/strong expletives, lude scenes, same gender relationships, grotesque scenes, etc. Also, books with an overt theme of honoring evil got the boot as well. I am fully willing to put up with less than perfect writing structure if a writer has a good story to tell. I have never read a book that I haven't found a typo in...including my own (just so you know, I do not give strikes for typos...it happens to all of us!) All that to say, I was very frustrated at a book that under all of the normal circumstances I should have loved, striking out in the last book. Then the thought came to me, "Did you pray about reading this trilogy?" Answer: Nope. Insert image of me smacking my forehead in a "Duh." type moment. *Sigh*

So I suppose that brings up the question, "Should we pray about what we are reading?" In a way, it seems a little silly. Why would God care what book we use to fritter away the time? Books, just like anything else we lay our eyes on/hear with our ears, become a part of us. I wasn't meaning to give a sermon today (super unqualified), but hear me out. In our society we see books/movies/music/etc. as passing forms of entertainment and nothing more, but in truth they shape our thought process and how we view the world. That is why it is so important to read God's word. So He can shape our thought process and how we view the world. Does that make sense? It does to me, and that is why I have always been so picky with my reading. This is also why I want to help others take the guess work out of the arduous process of finding clean fiction to read outside of God's word. With this thought, I encourage YOU to pray over your reading lists. Who knows what God will lead you to read next?

Freedom

What have I been up to this week? Reading like crazy! I have not always been a fast reader, but I certainly am now. Plowing through books is all well and good, but the reason I love books so much are the words between the lines. "What is the author trying to say?" "When they made that choice, what comment does that make on real life?" Watching those little bits of the author's "self" bleed onto the page is my favorite part of the "discovery" that I find reading to be. I actually had several authors commend me for really READING their book. One author's wife even commented that I "read the HEART of the story". I could not have been more pleased or humbled by this comment. It gave me even more confidence that I should continue to move forward with my book reviewing as well as the magazine itself.

When I read an author's work, I want to see them, really SEE THEM. I know that the writing of my own novel was an extremely personal experience. There were highs and lows in the writing process and those things gave their own anxiety, but what I really feared was being SEEN. In every type of writing, if a person is willing to look, there is a piece of the person who wrote it. I believe that this is part of the reason writers take bad reviews so seriously. Essentially, a bad review can be seen as a rejection of the person themselves. Fortunately, I reached the point where I was comfortable sharing that piece of myself without fear. It was exposing in some ways and when that criticism came, I did not know how I would handle it. The truth. At first it was painful, but after I contemplated...FREEING. I am now at place where I can truly say I don't worry about what others may think. Why? My Heavenly Father made me this way and He is directing my path, and that is enough for me to move forward one wobbling step at a time.

What I Read This Week

I hope that all of you had a nice week! The newsletter is growing in readership and I am happy to be able to reach out to all of you. Today, I wanted to share a little bit about my reading process and how I plan to populate "Clean Fiction" with a wide variety of clean reads. At this point with all of my other commitments, I can only read around one book a week, so consequently I review one book a week (as I did before, but now you have to wait to read them...tee hee hee). After writing a review, I contact the author and see if they are on board. Then move forward from there. Something I found that was interesting is that according to copyright law I don't have to contact the author at all. But of course, because my goal is to build a community that connects clean authors to readers who prefer clean reads, I contact them and try to make a connection.

Lately, I have been branching out from my usual genres to read books that I may not particularly love, but will still be great books for readers who prefer those genres. This week's read was an example of that. I did not enjoy the book and when I got to the end my inclination was to give it a three star rating (I don't do any lower than that unless there is a REAL problem). But after pondering and ruminating on it for a bit, I changed my mind. You see, I read to ESCAPE real life and this book challenged that by portraying the ugliness of REAL LIFE. The author was not wrong. In his approach. In his delivery. In his ending. It was uncomfortable for me to read, not because it was not a clean read, but because it was not an ESCAPE. When I finished the book, I was sure that I would not include it in the magazine. But after a shower, some prayer, and thought, I decided it should be included. Why? Because it is not about me. True, I have to read the books, but I am more searching for books that are clean and give a little truth than books that are going to be in my personal top ten. That brings me to our Community Activity this week.

Our Community Activity for this week is:
WHAT'S YOUR GENRE?

Clean Fiction Magazine will be split into overarching genre sections. That way you can go straight for your favorite genre if you want! Knowing that, I must ask this: what is your favorite genre? Why do I ask this? To include more of what YOU want to read of course! So far I have books in the Fantasy, Science Fiction, Western, Suspense, and Urban genres (we will also have a "Clean Manga Section"! So exciting!). If you see your favorite genre in this list, YAY! If not reply to this email with your favorite genre. That way I can search for books that you might enjoy and include them.

DON'T FORGET!

Book Cosplay Contest

I am pleased to say that the Book Cosplay Contest is in full swing over at www.CleanFictionMagazine.com , but of course we could always use more entrants (You have until July 31, 2021)! Make sure that use an email address that you check because the winner of the "Book Cosplay Contest" will win a $25 AMAZON GIFT CARD!!!!!

A Little Bit of Background

I hope that everyone is having a great week and happy Wednesday to you all! I am pleased to say that the Book Cosplay Contest is in full swing, but of course we could always use more entrants (You have until July 31, 2021)! If you feel so inclined, feel free to pop over to CleanFictionMagazine.com for more information.

With that out of the way, I am going to give you an update on the progress of compiling all the wonderful content that I know that you are going to love! I just finished writing up a review on an exciting almost 400 page Sci Fi book that I am SOOOO excited to share. I am also trying to connect with great clean fiction authors to bring you exclusive author interviews. If you enjoy the slight silliness that I include in my book reviews, you will be pleased to know that Clean Fiction Magazine is going to be more of that same light hearted content.

Here is some background about me and why a publication like this is right up my alley. I currently work part time for my family's business (my father's main income for my entire life as well as his father's main income) a local free paper that has been around for...drum roll please...49 years! What has made our paper stand out was the commitment to upholding Christian principles. You will never see advertising for alcohol or cigarettes in the paper nor will you ever see any type of promiscuous advertising either. My grandfather started the paper and was absolutely committed to keeping it clean and supporting local businesses. But where does the silliness and fun come from, you might ask? My grandmother. Her dream for the paper was for it to be light hearted and enjoyable to read. No serious and depressing news here! Her rule on content was (and still is): Does it make you smile? Perfect!

Just like my grandparents and father before me, I want to create a positive and safe space to promote small business (in this case indie authors and small presses) that is clean and pleasant for the reader to enjoy. So with a lifetime of print production experience and with the support of my family, I will hopefully be able to bring you the joy in reading that I have so long experienced. AND NOW... Community Activity Time!!!

Our Community Activity for this week is: Pause for Poetry

Clean Fiction Magazine will be having a poetry section that will feature single poems as well as poetry books! If you have a poem that you would like to share, we may be able to print it for you!!! A New Chapter

This is a big day! Today marks the day that this blog is shifting from just creating great reviews to creating a FULL MAGAZINE of great reviews! So here is the skinny, "Clean Fiction" is going to be your one stop shop for NEW ADULT content. What is New Adult?

From Wikipedia:

New adult (NA) fiction, also rendered as new-adult fiction, is a developing genre of fiction with protagonists in the 18–30 age bracket. St. Martin's Press first coined the term in 2009, when they held a special call for "fiction similar to Young adult fiction (YA) that can be published and marketed as adult—a sort of an 'older YA' or 'new adult'".

This magazine/ezine is not geared toward teenagers, but to mature adults who would prefer less "mature content". I am going with the tag line: WONDERFUL READS FOR THE QUIRKY & DISCERNING BOOK LOVER. There will be physical copies available at a minimal price as well as ebook copies available for FREE. Yes, let's say that again, "FREE!" At this point we are looking at between 75-100 8.5"x11" pages of content, but it could be larger!

The Misadventures of Trisha Lee

Finding Fireflies by A.C. Williams

This week we are featuring a fun mystery series by A.C. Williams. I have only read the first book "Finding Fireflies", but I cannot wait to get my hands on the next two! You will find the Book Blurb for "Finding Fireflies" below.

BOOK BLURB

I’m Trisha Leigh Lee. I’m 32 years old, accident-prone, a church secretary, and still single.

But I’ll always have my memories of Aaron, the guy of my dreams, as we chased fireflies at twilight. Compared to him, the options at the Highpointe Baptist Church’s singles group just add insult to injury.

Then a misunderstanding lands me in jail (I promise, I took care of the ticket). That’s where I meet Jordin, a young prostitute with major problems. Somehow, I’ve gotta help her. Of course, that’s the perfect time for Aaron to reappear in my life. Then Jordin gets herself kidnapped by an underground prostitution ring.

This story isn’t for the faint-hearted. I face off with jilted women desperate for a second MRS degree, survive bad catfish, captain pontoon boats, and fight old people for their motor scooters.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

BOOK REVIEW

This book was a very loud read. What do I mean by that? Well, I giggled, snorted, gasped, guffawed, sighed, and audibly cringed (ooooo...that had to hurt!) my way through the entire book...and I would do it again!

ACTION

This book has more action than one would expect from a mystery novel with a light hearted blurb and some of it is pretty harrowing, but if you are one for long action sequences this is not your éclair. Williams balances an extremely difficult subject by making her main character a woman with the worst luck that has ever descended upon a human being. Patricia, or Trisha as she prefers to be called, is a zany mixture of Nancy Drew and Mia Thermopolis ("Princess Diaries" before her makeover) with all the heart and naiveté of a preacher's kid. If you are a fan of "slap-stick" comedy you will LOVE this book.

ADVENTURE

The story is set smack dab in the middle of the present day "Bible Belt" and the culture of religion is a main player. Though you do not go far from home in this story, you will walk with Trisha along a path of faith that many in this day and age can relate to. The use of a more mature heroine adds to the gravity of what she learns and gives her decisions more weight with real world consequences.

ROMANCE

I would like to stress that the romance in this book is more of a sub-subplot than a real player. What it lacks in quantity of relationship, it fully makes up for with adorableness that you will not be able to avoid smiling over. The amount of blushing is next level, but so worth it to endure.

RELIGION

This is a book about religion and Christianity, and how sometimes the two are not playing on the same team. Williams digs deep when it comes to the questions of "Is that Christianity or religion?" and "How should Christians treat others?" What I enjoyed the most was that she did not give you direct answers to any of the questions she poses. She allows the reader to draw their own conclusions from what she has written and leaves you questioning your own real life choices.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This book is hilarious, painful, lighthearted, and convicting. It is refreshing to walk along with a female protagonist that is not focused in any way on changing externally, no matter how unconventional her visage may be. Mixing this with extreme internal/spiritual growth, the author hands you a window into the "other" and begs you to look with eyes unclouded. I do not know what mystery Trisha Lee will stumble into next, but you can be sure that I will be following along.

Year 0033

Year 0033 by J.M. Evans

This week's book is from an international author! J.M. Evans is from England and writes a variety of books labeled for "Children/Teens". I would say that her newest book "Year 0033" is enjoyable for Clean Fiction loving adults as well. The Book Blurb for "Year 0033" can be found below.

BOOK BLURB

Chella has lived the whole of her life in Area IF208, one of many Areas set up by a new World Council after war, famine and plague cause global devastation.

Religion is banned, supposedly for the sake of world peace, so Chella has to keep her Christian faith a secret.

But when her best friend disappears, her fiancé is arrested, and astonishing rumours of people living Outside surface, a new chapter in her life begins.

Chella is an unlikely heroine, battling a troubled past, a dangerous present and an uncertain future.

“Shine your light into our darkness, Lord, and by your grace protect and deliver us from all evil this night; in the name of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, we pray.”

Never has Chella needed to pray this prayer as much as she needs to pray it now.

She has no idea how much is at stake.

BOOK REVIEW

Though I would put "Year 0033" in a slower more contemplative category than many books that I have been reading recently, it takes this category to the very best it could be. This book is similar to "The Giver" if "The Giver" had been written by a Christian with a passionate love of God.

ACTION

This book has a mere sprinkling of Sci-Fi/Dystopian flavor. The characters fear and danger is very real, but in some ways I lost the "otherness" of the world she created that is usually found in these genres. Why is that you may ask? Because I could see something similar to the events in her world happening in our current future. I would say that this is a very timely book for Christians to read.

ADVENTURE

There is adventure and danger woven into the tapestry of the story J.M. Evans tells, but it is spread widely across the feelings and thoughts of the main female character. This book is completely written from one character's point of view, though that view jumps forward and backward within that character's timeline. This lends to the mystery of this character's journey.

ROMANCE

In some ways the romance in this story is sweet and in other ways it is broken. Broken in the respect that there a desperate secret the main female character is trying to hide. Some may find parts of the romantic theme disturbing, but the author presents the truth with a delicate sensitivity that makes it easier to read.

RELIGION

"Year 0033" is a deep look into the persecuted church. The banning of religion has led this future version of the church underground. The author shows all the joy of belief along with all the hardship that goes along with hiding your faith. I could not help thinking of both the early church as well as my brothers and sisters in Christ that are suffering in other countries.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This book is a very successful look into the hardship and passion that following God in difficult and dangerous circumstances can bring. The faith journey that the main character, Chella, goes on is powerful in emotion and love for the Lord. Pushing me to pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters, this book is a real look into what our future world could possibly be. Though the book may be quiet, it speaks firmly to the importance of faith in God and commitment to each other within the church, both persecuted and free.

BOOK RATING

P - Clutch your PEARLS. Grandma may raise an eyebrow, but keep on reading.
