Schedule? Oh Please.

The next thing I decided to conquer was trying to fit my 2K writing sessions into a set schedule. The problem was, as a mom, I didn’t really have a set schedule with the non-writing things. Especially with a ‘tweener around the house, not to mention her own after-school plans. Then there are groceries. It used to be I could buy a set amount and I knew how long those would last.

Then puberty hit and the “You need to eat” monster turned into “You need to stop eating!” She abruptly started consum...

Time for an Action Plan

Yeah. I say that like I know what I’m doing. So, in order to actually make a plan, in a way I do have to know what I’m doing. Which translates into knowing what I can do.

Know Your Capabilities

I discovered this after I tested myself in December and learned I can write anywhere from 2K to 2500 words in an hour. That’s my average. How did I figure this? For a month I write two hours a day on average (because in December it’s nearly impossible for me to write more than that—holidays!), and I’d ke...

Heard a comment today…

And it’s stuck with me ever since. I was talking with friends online, all writers, and one of them said, “I don’t know why I thought I could keep up [famous writer]‘s writing schedule. I have a full time job, a husband, and kids!”

And she was right. I was doing the same thing. I was looking at all these other writers and trying to duplicate their writing schedule—which is just dumb. I have a kid, I have a house, 3 cats and activities that if I don’t do them, they won’t get done. And I’ve never...

Looking for the answers

We’ve all tried to find our process, writers I mean. And we all—new or professional writers—seek out the advice of others. The best thing would be to find those more successful and see what they do. When do they write? How often during the day? Do they have a job? How many words? How many pages?

The Beginning

I used to write all the time. When ever I wanted to. I could go weekends and write and do what I wanted. And the funny thing was—in all that time, in all those years, I produced very little in the way of completed works. It wasn’t until my first marriage that I got my first computer and actually wrote an entire novel.

I remember being so proud of it. 123, 000 words. Yep. A novel about a vampiric pop band and their ‘family’ and a hair-stylist who caught the eye of their base guitarist. I still...

The Journey

Great title isn’t it? Sounds promising. But what the journey is, is hard work. And a lot of patience and creative planning. Do I do a great job?

No.

Do I do the best I can?

Yes.

Is it enough.

Always.
