A Bewitching Spring Brew

With Spring here, and Summer right around the corner, it is time to awaken our minds and our hearts. Made with a magically-crafted coffee and sensual, love-inspiring ingredients, this sweet dessert coffee martini and homemade non-alcoholic iced coffee drink, will bring love to your heart, and your mind.

Read on to learn more about this coffee, how you can get some, and then head down to the cocktail below!

Making a Magical Cup of Coffee

From your morning cup o’ Joe, to caramel macchiatos, even coffee ice cream and martinis, coffee has enchanted the world with its flavors and benefits. But what about a magically crafted coffee brew?

Cucina Aurora Magical Olive Oil & Coffee

Dawn Aurora of Cucina Aurora has upped the game with her new line of coffee – fittingly called Witch’s Brew (a name your gal at WitchCraft Cocktails can get behind) – that’s made with seasonal, corresponding ingredients, so that you can effortlessly add an extra bit of magic to your morning brew. I recently had a chance to try her Spring Brew with the enticing aromas of lavender and blueberry, – and I will just say – I am in L.O.V.E.

(Take a look at these delicious, magically aligned olive oils and this Witchy Woman Apron she offers, too!)

Cucina Aurora Kitchen Witchery Podcast Conversational Witchcraft

I learned about this new offering on her lovely podcast, the Cucina Aurora Kitchen Witchery – Conversational Witchcraft Podcast, and just had to try it out! I had such a blast on her show, too. Go ahead and give it a listen (put it on in the background while you make and enjoy your drink) and check out her other episodes while you are there!

Inspired by these peaceful and enchanting aromas, I just HAD to make a cocktail with this delicious coffee! Be sure to grab your Spring Brew (while you still can), and let’s jump on in to the drink ingredients, or skip ahead to the coffee cocktail or iced coffee recipe.

Jump to RecipeIngredients and Tools

When it comes to the flavor of this sweet coffee concoction, the balance and magic of each ingredient plays an important role. Read on to uncover the various ingredients, what each of them adds flavor-wise and energetically, and what tools you might need to make this magical coffee drink, or skip to the recipe below.

Fresh Blackberry

Just in time for its harvest from May until September, this luscious berry makes a subtle appearance in the base of this enticing, sweet coffee concoction. Associated in magical practices with the planet Venus, this bountiful berry enhances the sensual, lusty, and healing energies of this drink. And for those looking for a Beltane or Summer Solstice beverage, the blackberry in this concoction is perfect for connecting with fairy energy!

Ground Cardamom

Adding a hint of warmth and spice to this magical mixture, ground cardamom is also associated with the planet Venus, and furthers the sensual, loving energies of this concoction. Ground cardamom from your local grocery store should work fine here!

Rose-Vanilla Simple Syrup

What better way to compliment the floral coffee, than with enticing rose and soothing vanilla? Both ruled by Venus, these two enhance the loving, peaceful vibes in this coffee concoction. Don’t let the title dissuade you – rose-vanilla simple syrup is easy to make! Just pour 1/2 cup hot water over 1 tablespoon dried rose petals (you can find rose tea at the grocery store, if need be!) and 1-inch slice of vanilla bean. Let steep for 5 minutes, then add in 1/2 cup of sugar. If you are trying the alcoholic rendition of this drink, you can also substitute 1/2 ounce of the syrup in the cocktail for 1/2 ounce rose liqueur.

Coffee

You can’t have a coffee concoction without, well, coffee! The inspiration for this very drink, is of course, none other than Cucina Aurora’s Spring Coffee Brew, which adds a little subtle, extra touch of lavender and blueberry magic to our beverage. Ruled by Mars, coffee imparts active energy to both our minds and bodies, and has even been used in some witchcraft practices for divination. Beyond being the most essential ingredient to this cocktail, it helps add that fiery flare of awakening and inspiration to our coffee concoction.

Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk

An essential for the nonalcoholic iced coffee version (and optional for the alcoholic rendition), Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk helps balance the floral rose flavors, with the boldness of the coffee. It also furthers the vanilla and almond energies mentioned elsewhere in this post!

Amaretto (Cocktail) or Almond Extract (Non-Alcoholic)

Complimenting that traditional coffee aroma and bringing energy of prosperity, wisdom, and romance, adding just a tad of almond flavoring imparts a woodsy and nutty aroma to our concoction. If making the nonalcoholic version, you will be using almond extract, whereas cocktailers will enjoy the addition of amaretto to this coffee martini. While it is traditionally thought of as an almond liqueur, this is not always the case – this sweet, lightly nutty Italian liqueur is sometimes made with apricot pits, or a combination of both. Nonetheless, apricot is associated with Venus and love and peace, so its energy is a great compliment to this drink anyway!

Vodka (For the alcoholic version)

And for the final ingredient in this coffee martini, you will need just a bit of vodka! When it comes to vodka, using a clean and crisp spirit is usually best, that way it doesn’t interfere with the flavor balance. However, always do what is best for your budget!

Tools

What kind of tools might you need to enjoy this sweet, luscious coffee concoction? If you are making the nonalcoholic version, you’re in luck! All you will need (besides something to make coffee), is a measuring device (such as a jigger or even converting ounces to cups table/teaspoons), something to muddle the blackberries (such as a wooden spoon, or a muddler like this), and your cup! For the alcoholic rendition, you will additionally need something with which to shake your drink (like a Boston shaker), and a hawthorn and/or a mesh strainer.

And that’s it! Once you have everything you need, it’s time to dive in and make this drink.

What is Mercury Retrograde, and How to Survive it

A time when the planet of communication (Mercury) appears to be moving backwards in the sky due to Earth’s position in our solar system, Mercury retrograde is a notorious time for communication mishaps, technology issues, and travel delays in astrology. However, by tuning into its symbolism and meaning, it can also be a potent time of reflection and growth. Let’s dive into a bit about what the upcoming Mercury retrograde in Aquarius and Capricorn could mean, how to utilize and survive it – or skip ahead to the Mercury drink recipes!

Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius and in Capricorn

From January 14 and all the way until February 3, Mercury retrograde will begin in the sign of Aquarius and back track all the way to Capricorn. Mercury traveling backwards through Aquarius (a sign associated with creative innovation, boundless ideas, and technology) gives us the opportunity to grow and rework the way we think – to expand our intelligence and understanding of things, to review outdated ideas, and even the way we label and perceive ourselves and the social groups we operate within. This will allow room for more, innovative ideas to flow through – although, Mercury retrograde is a notorious time to not pursue new ideas! So, allow yourself to marinate in any revelations until Mercury goes direct again. (For those looking to specifically connect to the Mercury in Aquarius energy, the Fig & Maple Sour, Cherry Aquarius Moon Mix, & Champagne Julep cocktails could be good fit for you! See more suggestions down below).

After Mercury in Aquarius invites us to change our perspectives and our ideas of ourselves, mercury going retrograde in Capricorn will move us from our heads to our feet, providing the these revelations apply in the mundane. A sign of tradition, structure, motivation, and abundance, Capricorn (in general) is great for matters of career and goals. Mercury retrograde in this sign provides the perfect opportunity re-analyze career paths, projects, or even revisit abandoned goals (new years resolutions, anyone?). While again, mercury retrograde is not the best time to initiate new things, use the time to reflect on restructuring instead. (For those looking to connect to the Mercury in Capricorn energy, the Balsamic Moon Shrub and Stormy Dark Moon recipes from Moon, Magic, Mixology could be good for you! See more suggestions down below).

In Summary

Mercury traveling backwards through Aquarius and Capricorn from January 14 to February 3, offers us the opportunity to reflect on old, outdated beliefs, ideas, and dreams, and allow us to re-lay the groundwork for one’s career, abundance, overall perspective with those new insights! But don’t forget – communication and technology can go array at this time, travel mishaps are bound to happen – so be sure to take it slow, see the opportunity in each moment, and maybe cool down and relax with a mercury retrograde cocktail.

Drinks from Moon, Magic, Mixology

For those that have my second book, Moon, Magic, Mixology, there are some great recipes for Mercury Retrograde as well! The Gemini Moon Mint Julep and Lunar State of Mind are other great options.

Stones, Minerals, and Crystals for Mercury Retrograde

Beyond these drink recipes, what are some other ways you can mediate the chaotic energy during mercury retrograde? Whether you are looking to promote clear communication and mind, protect your energy, for safe travel, or focus in on some potent healing & transformation during Mercury Retrograde, here are some of my favorite potent crystals to work with. There are 4 crystals I always go to when mercury retrograde comes around – I find this quad helps me make it through as peacefully and safely as possible!

Blue Lace Agate

Associated with the throat chakra, blue lace agate is a powerful communication stone. Tuning you into your higherself, this stone will help you not only keep calm and relaxed, but also communicate with mental clarity amidst the communicative chaos and emotions that may arise at this time.

Hematite

Hematite is a powerful grounder and protector. Its heavy weight connects you to the earth’s energy, and its gentle vibration balances and soothes. Hematite absorbs negative energy, so this will be great for protecting you against the emotional energy of others (perfect for mercury retrograde!).

Citrine

Citrine embodies the energy of positivity – and as such, this stone transmutes negative energy into positive. Also a wonderful stone for those going through transitions (and for empaths in general), citrine is a great stone ally to work for keeping you positive and prosperous through mercury retrograde, regardless of the roadblocks! And as a bonus, citrine can help connect you to your inner inspiration, for those looking to mercury retrograde as a time for revisiting ideas.

Amber

A fossilized botanical resin, amber can be great for connecting to ancient wisdom and uncovering deep-rooted energetic patterns (hello mercury retrograde healing!). It is also used for creativity, sensuality, empowerment, as well as protection! I’ve also found petrified wood to be a worthy option or replacement.

To layer on the energetic & magical frequencies, you can meditate with your given crystal, keep it on you as make and/or sip the drink, as well as attune the crystal to the drink by visualizing both the drink and crystal resonating together with your intention, as you hold the crystal against the outside of the glass. (Don’t put your crystal in any of the cocktail components unless you know for sure it is not toxic).

Drink Recipes for the Sagittarius New Moon Solar Eclipse

Celebrate the close of the season, and sip in the Sagittarius new moon solar eclipse energy with these 5 spirited drink recipes! Eclipses can create powerful energy 6 month cycles, so whether looking for a drink for the day, or a few to enjoy over the next few months – I have you covered!

About the Sagittarius New Moon Solar Eclipse

Opening the way to the holiday season, the Sagittarius solar eclipse (December 4 at 2:43 am EST) is the final eclipse of the last year-and-a-half cycle of Sagittarius/Gemini eclipses. As what many refer to as a supercharged new moon, solar eclipses can open new doorways and life paths. Occurring with the moon and sun Sagittarius, it can mean a new way of seeing the world around you and what belief systems will drive you forward in the new year. Your perspective may change, you may develop a new dedication or path. Or, akin to the way the archer Sagittarius shoots for the stars, you may realign your dreams. The Sagittarius new moon provides insight for us to align with a new sense of truth and new vision of reality. Either way, the moon eclipsing the sun is a powerful image – our emotions and intuition aligning with and eclipsing the sun. While this can craft a sense of energetic haziness, rest assured that the fog will clear and a new way forward will emerge.

With the alignment of the Winter solstice to follow in the Northern hemisphere, and the coming of the New Year, this eclipse can be a powerful time to reevaluate your beliefs, ideals, and dreams – to develop new aspirations and shed old ways of thinking that limit you from endless horizons. Sagittarius embraces spontaneity and boundlessness – so while you ponder what new direction you may want to go in life, don’t forget to do what makes you laugh and joyous!

With the forthcoming solstices and new year energy, this eclipse can really set the tone for some big alignment, to pick a new direction and belief system with which to aim your arrow and focus. So, sip away in the magic of this powerful astrological moment in Sagittarius fashion! From a spiced and refreshing honey lemonade, to a warming, energizing fig and maple sour, there is a drink recipe for you to embrace the magic of the moment!

This image also shows how glassware can give your drink a halloween feel. Photo by Harper Point Photography.Aquarius Moon CocktailThe use of Cherry juice in this Aquarius Moon Mix vodka & champagne cocktail (with a mocktail variation), is another example of how adding a seasonal flavors juice can add a themed color to your halloween drink.2. Give your Samhain Beverage a Spooky Feel with Black Salt

Black salt is a simple yet enticing way to add a bit of spooky magic to your simple halloween cocktail or mocktail! Use as a rim on your halloween tequila or mezcal drinks, or even make a pomegranate margarita or salty dog by adding 1/2 ounce of pomegranate juice and rim the drink with black salt for a red & black spooky concoction! Just be sure you are using food grade black salt, which you can purchase online as linked, or find as Hawaiian black lava salt as spice and food shops.

3. Give Your Bewitching Halloween Cocktails a Black Sugar Rim

When it comes to shots or party cocktails, it’s hard to go wrong with a sugar rim. Now you can make your lemon drop, margarita, or even a red cosmo haunting by simply switching out the white sugar for a black sugar rim! You can order black sugar online, or finding it around halloween baking and decorating supplies as a sprinkle.

4. Grenadine Can Add a Layered and “Bloody” Effect To Your Samhain Drink

As a thick pomegranate syrup, often used for Shirley temples and tequila sunrises, grenadine makes a great way to add a layered color effect to your halloween concoctions. With its heavy weight, it will slip to the bottom of any cocktail, and you can even pair it with a black salt rim, to have a black, orange, and red spooky concoction! I suggest making grenadine at home for the best option. I have a recipe in my book WitchCraft Cocktails, or you can make your own recipe from online.

Fancy Sprinkles offer Prism Powders that can change the color of your cocktail, AND add sparkle! They also have halloween cocktail sugar rims.5. Color-Changing Cocktail Powder (Fancy Sprinkles )

After seeing advertisements for these well over a year, I finally dove in and purchased a cocktail powder set from Fancy Sprinkles (I got bonus mystery sprinkles too – and let me tell you, it was incredibly delicious). Their Prism powder will change the color of a cocktail, and add edible glitter as well, so that you can have majestic mocktails & cocktails! I got their Dracula Cocktail Set, which comes with black and red prism powder, as well as some high end sprinkles you can use as a rim for your cocktail. This is a great choice for making any drink, alcoholic or not, look spook-tacular!

6. Create an Electric Halloween Drink with Colored Liqueurs

Add a touch of bewitching magic to your halloween concoctions with vibrant, bright, and even color-changing ingredients. From electric green appletini’s to vibrant blue beverages, simply choosing concoctions with a bright color can be an easy and tasty way to have themed concoctions for your Halloween gathering. Here are some liqueurs and other ingredients that can be a great way to add vibrant colors to your halloween beverages:

Make Your Halloween Cocktail Green with Apple Schnapps

With a vibrant green hue and matching seasonal flavor, apple schnapps can be a great way to have a hauntingly hue-d green concoction. Use this liqueur in an appletini cocktail (you can check out my witchcraft-inspired Witch’s Wand Appletini here), to show off this liqueur and its majestic hue.

Give Your Samhain Concoction an Electrion Blue Hue with Blue Curacao

With its orange flavor and bright blue color, blue curacao is a great choice for crafting a vibrant and vivacious halloween cocktail. As an orange liqueur, blue curaçao can actually be used in place of triple sec or other orange liqueurs, such as in your classic margarita or cosmo, or even as an addition to a vodka lemonade – making it a superbly easy choice for both mixing and aesthetic!

Craft a Bewitching Purple Drink with Violet Liqueur or Creme De Violet

With a luscious purple hue and easily enchanting flavor, violet liqueur or creme de violette is another great way to add a surprising color to a halloween concoction. The classic Aviation cocktail will make a great choice here, or you can easily add creme de violet to most cocktails with its agreeable flavor – like a vodka lemonade with lavender bitters. For more violet liqueur recipes, you can check out my book WitchCraft Cocktails, or even my upcoming book Moon, Magic, Mixology where I include a recipe on how to make your own violet liqueur.

Create an Alchemical Color-changing Halloween Cocktail with Butterfly Pea Flower

An herb that changes color from deep blue to purple-pink upon contact with acid, any concoction that utilizes butterfly pea flower is a show stopper for those halloween parties. You can order your own butterfly pea flower online and turn it into a syrup, such as I did here for my Elle’s Alchemy alchemical cocktail, or you can even utilize these B-Lure Butterfly Pea Flower drops or liquors infused with it like Unicorn Vodka or Empress Gin

7. Turn Your Drink Black with Food-Grade Black Charcoal

From black cupcakes to goth ice cream, food grade black charcoal is making its way through the food world as a way to make spooky, black-colored food items, and your drink should be no exception! You can do the same by adding a moderate pinch to your concoctions – just be sure to be careful about medication, as black charcoal can interfere with certain medications. I personally used activated charcoal in my Black Cat Cocktail recipe in WitchCraft Cocktails.

8. Craft a Bubbling Concoction with Dry Ice

What can be more fitting than a bubbling cauldron cocktail for halloween? An exciting and unique way to add a bit of spookiness to your halloween concoction, dry ice is available almost grocery stores around halloween. You will want to safely handle this ingredient, so be sure to have gloves, tongs, and glasses (when you break it apart) and be sure to follow proper safety precautions. I recommend referencing this Betty Crocker Article and this other article from The Rose Table to help you feel safe and comfortable using this fun ingredient!

9. Add a Mystical Smoke Aura with a Smoker

For those willing to make the extra investment, getting a smoker to smoke your cocktails can be a great way to add a bewitching element to your halloween concoctions. Using a smoker, especially in combination with a cloche, is an easy way to wow your guests at any party. You can use on any drink, as well, transforming a simple old fashioned into an eye catching and aromatic experience. To use these, you will also need a long lighter.

10. Display Your Cocktails with a Cloche

Whether using with a smoker, dry ice, or just to have a bewitching display for your halloween cocktails, a cloche is an elegant decoration that can add a spooky element to your halloween party. You can use a single one at a time for a touch of beauty & the beast realness, get a larger one like this to display multiple cocktails at a time, or invest in a fancy one like this. Just make sure you are selecting one that is tall enough for whatever height glass you are planning to use! You can also use these year round with your smoker, or use for decoration around the house.

You can use a cloche and a smoking gun together like this, to create a magical cocktail reveal at home:
