Elle’s Alchemy

A Little Alchemical Magic…

October is officially here, ushering in the season of deep transformation and change. A time of death and rebirth, October can reflect themes of deep, inner alchemy. And in true alchemist fashion, I have just the perfect potion (or alchemical mixture, if you will), for positive change, transformation, happiness, and love. Inspired by none other than my dear friend Michelle of Elle’s Alchemy and her amazing bismuth art, this color changing butterfly pea flower cocktail is a powerful elixir for transformation with love and positivity. And with just a tad of coconut and lavender, this cocktail has those summer tropical flavors to invoke happiness, and for those still reminiscing of the seasonal shift. Read on for information about Elle’s Alchemy & why I crafted this cocktail, a cocktail and mocktail recipe, as well as a magical color changing syrup that will enchant any cocktail.

About Elle’s Alchemy

Cocktail Inspiration

As someone who worked in a metaphysical shop for several years, all things crystals, minerals, and stones fascinated me. However, I never really dove into bismuth – or at least, never found a piece that really connected with me beyond aesthetic appeal. Until, I met Michelle of Elle’s Alchemy, that is. When she came into the shop I worked at, looking for a wire wrapper (me!), I was astonished by the energy radiating from these pieces. Crafted with a true alchemist’s heart, the bismuth pieces she creates are truly out of this world – and has opened me up to this wonder of a metal, a metal that itself embraces the spirit of alchemy – of transformation.

She has since outdone herself, creating amazing pieces using bowls, crystals, even shells (!!), and has been sourcing ethically sourced crystals directly from independent miners (which is hard to find in the crystal world! So if you are looking for crystals you know are ethically sourced, check her out!). As a friend, I have been amazed to watch her already-amazing art blossom even more.

As someone near and dear to my heart (and also a Leo sistar!), I wanted to craft a cocktail to represent her, and her amazing work for her birthday. (As a note – I’m NOT receiving any incentive for writing about her pieces! I am just simply a gushing friend). The concoction was originally created for Michelle’s birthday, inspired by her work and what she stands for, plus using some of her favorite flavors. And now I am sharing this magical concoction with all of you!

You can read learn more about these pieces over at her Etsy shop! Now let’s get to this luscious, transforming concoction!

Elle’s Alchemy

The Cocktail

Energetic Alignment: Transformation, Love, Spirituality, Happiness

Alchemy has never been so tasty, fun, & luscious. Embrace transformation, with positivity, love, and alignment in this uplifting, magical color-changing cocktail and mocktail. I honestly can’t think of a more delicious way to embrace change, can you?!

In true (Elle’s) Alchemy fashion, this concoction is uplifting, with a tropical edge, hint of lavender, and lots of love to warm the heart. The star of this cocktail (and the reason for this color-changing magic) is the syrup listed below. A combination of color-changing butterfly pea flower, violet, and calendula, the syrup centers the soothing, transformative energies of this concoction, as well as enhancing energies of psychic ability. Lavender and lemon add in purification and extra joy, a tad of coconut liqueur adds lunar transformation, psychic awareness, and love. The base of this cocktail, gin, helps balance the other herbal elements of this cocktail, not just flavor-wise but also energetically, as a grounding, purifying, and psychic-heightening juniper-based alcohol. Just like these heart-felt bismuth pieces, and the power of my friend Michelle, this action-packed cocktail is all about positivity, warmth, love, and transformation. Imbibe for positive transitions, with warmth and grace, and spiritual alignment. Add in a sprig of rosemary for extra purification, peace, & psychic enhancement, and to further the compliment the gin flavors of the concoction.

Butterfly pea flower is the magic behind the color change in this cocktail, and it changes from deep blue-violet, to a magenta color upon touching acidity. To get the full magnificence of the color change, it is best to present in a Collins glass over ice, and then only add the lemon juice at the very end for presentation, before stirring it all together.

For Simple Sipping: Cocktail making can be easy! Just swap ingredients or remove as you see fit. (Except that for color changing, butterfly pea flowers are essential, unless you use B’lure Flower Extract drops which you can get at places like Total Wine). Use the material here & the ingredient reference list towards the bottom to help guide you in your own unique concoction, and get creative in swapping ingredients you may not have.

Elle’s Alchemy

A color-changing, transformational Lemon Drop-esque cocktail with floral & tropical notes, that will leave you Refreshed, Uplifted and Aligned with every sip.

Servings 1 person

Author WitchCraft Cocktails

Ingredients4 dashes lavender bitters (or dried/fresh lavender. If you added lavender to the Metamorphosis syrup, I would NOT add extra lavender to the cocktail)1 sprig rosemary (optional)3/4 ounce Metamorphosis Syrup (instructions below)1/4 ounce coconut rum (or liqueur)1.5 ounce gin3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice (only add once you are ready for the color change!)
InstructionsIn a cocktail shaker, place lavender bitters or herb, syrup, coconut liqueur, and gin. Add ice, and shake, visualizing the energy within the cocktail heightening and building together. If you wish to serve with no ice, strain into stemmed cocktail glass. If you wish to see the transition of color better, it is best to strain into a collins or tall glass over ice. (The ice helps control the dispersion of the acidity through the cocktail). When ready, pour the lemon juice on top and witness the magic of the color change, from blue-violet, to a magical magenta. Connect with the color change, visualizing your own spirituality helping you transition and change with love and psychic awareness. Adorn with a lavender sprig and/or lemon wedge/wheel. Alternatively, you can build the cocktail in the Collins glass instead of shaking, but I find shaking these ingredients creates a more rounded flavor.

Mocktail Version

When it comes to cocktails that aren’t pure alcohol, it is easy to make a mocktail version! That’s part of the magic of spellbinding syrups, is that can really enhance any mocktail to make something utterly unique and magical.

Elle’s Metamorphosing Mocktail

A non-alcoholic variation on the Elle's Alchemy Cocktail, a color-changing concoction with ingredients aligned to transformation, peace, happiness, alignment, and love.

Ingredients2 sprigs lavender (If you added lavender to the syrup, I would not add extra lavender here)1 sprig rosemary (optional)1.75 ounces Metamorphosis Syrup1.75 ounces soda water1.5-2 ounces fresh lemon juice
InstructionsIn a tall glass, place lavender and syrup. Muddle the lavender in the syrup, visualizing their energies intermingling and transforming together into a new flavor. Add in soda water and ice, and when ready for the color transformation, add lemon juice. You can add more lemon juice for a more hot pink color. See note below about lemon-to-syrup ratio below. Garnish with lavender sprig and lemon slice.

NotesUsually when it comes to making mocktails, you vary the acidity to syrup ratios. However, in this mocktail it is very easy for the lemon juice to over come the unique flavors of the syrup. I put a scale of lemon juice, so that people who like things sweeter can start with less lemon juice and then add more until perfect to personal preference & taste. For those that do not like sweeter recipes, it is likely you will want more lemon juice. But add as you go! Just be aware.
Additionally, if you want the coconut energies from the cocktail, you can add 1/4 ounce coconut cream. It tastes absolutely lovely with it! Just be sure to then stir and strain the cocktail.

Butterfly Pea Syrup

Metamorphosis Syrup

Energetic Alignment: Transformation, Happiness, Otherworlds, Psychic Abilities, Hope, Luck, Love

Add a bit of transformational magic to any concoction with this sweet, comforting, Metamorphosis Syrup, energetically aligned to happiness, luck, and transformation.

Butterfly pea flower, which symbolizes transformation, love, happiness, and spirituality, is the powerful color changing ingredient in the syrup and concoction. However, it doesn’t taste so great on its own! With the complimentary energies and flavors of strengthening calendula and peace-inducing violet, this syrup because a concoction for positive change and happiness. Violet flower enhances the deep blue-violet of this syrup, and is often a sign of hope and positive change, induces peace, love, and enhance psychic perception. Calendula is often used for enhancing psychic abilities, in honoring the dead (the ultimate transformation), and for strengthening and good luck as well. Together, these three ingredients create a magical violet-colored syrup for transformation, happiness, love, and psychic enhancement.

Metamorphosis Syrup

Utilizing the herbal, floral flavors of violet, calendula, and the color-chaning magic of the butterfly pea flower, this syrup is energetically aligned for transformation, happiness, psychic awarness, and peace. For color-changing magic, simply add an acid like lemon, and the color will change fomr blue-violet, to magenta. Lavender compliments well with this syrup.

Ingredients1/8 cup dried calendula1/8 cup dried violet flowers1/8 cup dried butterfly pea flowers3/4 cup hot water3/4 cup sugar
InstructionsSet hot water to boil. In a jar or bowl, gather herbs. Spend a moment contemplating their powerful energies: butterfly pea flower that changes color with acidity, symbolically represtneing transformation, but also associated with feminine power, and happiness; calendula/marigold often used to worship the dead but also a flower of strength, psychic abilities, and comfort; violet flower for peace, calm, psychic vision, and hope. Connect to the energies of these flowers. Pour hot water over them, and let steep for 5 minutes, then stir in sugar and allow to chill. I recommend you let this syrup refrigerate for a few hours for a better infusion – the color will grow stronger with a bit more time. When ready, strain prior to use. Refrigerate and use for up to 3 weeks.

NotesNaturally, this syrup compliments well with lavender. If desired, add 1/16 cup of dried lavender flowers, BUT be aware this changes the addition of lavender to the cocktail & mocktail.

Magical Additions

A natural edition to this concoction, bismuth is not just an aesthetically, visually appealing metal. Learn more about what it symbolizes below:

Bismuth (All Chakras) is a metal of alchemy. It embodies the energy of transformation, and acts as conduit for journeying between the physical, spiritual, and astral realms. These associations make Bismuth great for shamanic journeying, or for visualization. Bismuth promotes energetic support for those who feel overburdened, or experience feelings of isolation. It can provide focus and wisdom in times of need.

Champagne Julep for Aquarius Full Moon

The Aquarius Full Moon
August 3, 2o20

Energetic Themes: Individuality, Freedom, Independence, Creativity, Revolution, Change

Following the Cancer new moon with the Sun-Saturn opposition, emotional care was put to the forefront and a light shone on our own personal needs for emotional self care and balance. The next moon in this energetic series, the Full Moon in Aquarius, is all about individuality and independence and freedom. It is time, now that you’ve seen your own emotional patterns, to identify the areas of your life where you feel limited. Look at what relationships, organizations, and belief systems are no longer serving your highest good. Give yourself room to align to your own truth and liberate yourself from ties that no longer resonate with your soul path.

What relationships, groups, and situations are no longer serving you? What ares of your life are you feeling a need for freedom, to recreate and re-define yourself?

The Cocktail

Imbibe the energy and messages of this full moon with a lovely Champagne Julep. Packed with the sage, mint, and rosemary Aquarian Moon herbs, this lite and elevating concoction is inspired to help you attune to your individuality, to help liberate your mind and body from old ties. With bourbon as the base to ground the cocktails energy and help you change repeating patterns, hex-breaking lime to cleanse the old, and bubbly white wine to attune you to your soul luminosity and individuality, this cocktail is a perfect compliment to your Aquarius Full Moon work.

For Simple Sipping:

Cocktail making can be easy! Just swap ingredients or remove as you see fit. Use the material here & the ingredient reference list towards the bottom to help guide you in your own unique concoction, and get creative in swapping ingredients you may not have.

46C70E26-A3AF-43FF-9C41-EA62584802A0

Ingredients:

3 sage leaves
7 mint leaves
1 x 3-4 inch rosemary sprig
1/2 ounce simple syrup (1:1 ratio sugar to water. I added in extra rosemary & sage in my syrup)
1/4 ounce lime juice
3 dashes angostura bitters
3/4 ounce bourbon
(optional) 1/2 ounce iris liqueur
2 ounces champagne

Instructions: In your shaker, add sage, rosemary, mint, and syrup. Muddle these ingredients, thinking of their purifying, protecting, and wisdom/clarity inducing energies that will help you break free from relationships and situations that no longer serve you, under the guidance of the Aquarius Full Moon. In fact, you can imagine the muddler stamping out these old cycles and connections.

Add in the bourbon and reflect on the patterns, systems, or ties you are getting rid of. Then squeeze hex-breaking lime juice into the shaker, visualizing the juice cleansing these old ties away. Add in bitters and then optional iris or anise liqueur for wisdom & purification, and further connection to your path & true self. Add ice and shake!

Double strain over crushed ice – or normal ice cubes if that’s all you have! (excuse my not-so-crushed ice). Pour champagne or sparkling white wine atop the drink, connecting to the fact that this white wine is made with grape skins removed, to get to the spirit inside – similar to the outward bonds you are releasing to connect to your true unique individual path. Stir & add rosemary, sage, and anise star garnish.

Magical Additions

Here are some crystals/stones I recommend for further utilizing the energy of the Aquarius Full Moon. To layer on the energetic & magical frequencies, you can meditate with your given crystal beforehand, keep it on you as make and/or sip the drink, as well as attune the crystal to the drink by visualizing both the drink and crystal resonating together with your intention, as you hold the crystal against the outside of the glass. (Don’t put your crystal in any of the cocktail components unless you know for sure it is not toxic). Here are their energies (as it relates to the full moon).

Amazonite – recognizing & honoring ones personal truth, communicating & creating boundaries, moving beyond fears that hold one back, such as confrontation

Barite – connection to one’s higher self, clear old or genetic patterns, or attachments that no longer serve you, to realign yourself to a new vibration, releasing fear

Chrysoprase – understanding the reasons behind repeating emotional patterns, releasing attachment to fear, belief systems, and outcomes that keep you stuck

Hematite – inspires balance & strength through adversity, manifestation through grounding or centering

Magical Associations Reference List

Anise (Jupiter, Air, Aquarius) – Purification, Protection, Youth, Clarity, Psychic Abilities, Spirit

Bourbon – Grounding/Centering, Karmic Patterns, Ancestry, Harvest, Protection, Abundance, Life/Rebirth Cycles

Ingredients:

2 x 1-2 inch slices of orange peel
1 chamomile tea bag or 1/2 tablespoon dried chamomile flowers
1/2 cup hot water
1/2 cup sugar

Instructions: Place orange peel slices & chamomile in a mason jar. Spend a moment connecting to the energy of the ingredients. Pour boiling water over the ingredients, and allow it to steep for 5 minutes. Add sugar, stir, and let cool. Strain and use right away, or allow to infuse for an extra 24 hours. Store in your refrigerator for 3-4 weeks.

Other syrups I might consider for Lammas: honey syrup, Blackberry/Sage syrup, maybe something with apple or basil, or maybe lavender.

Old Fashioned

Grounding, Wisdom, Creativity, Harvest

On a day that celebrates the grain harvest, there is no mixology match better than an Old Fashioned. Using bourbon (grains, 52+% corn mash, aged in wooden barrels) as the base, angostura bitters (a proprietary blend of 47+ herbs and ingredients), Orange, and simple or honey syrup (bonus points if its a magical syrup), Old Fashioned’s are packed with harvest associations! And they can be simple to make, and packed with magic! You can often add on 1/2 oz of liqueur if your choice. Here is a nutty, grounding Old Fashioned I’m making for this Lammas, for wisdom, grounding, & creativity! For a tutorial on how to make this, check it out on instagram or YouTube.

Ingredients:

1-2 peels orange (sun, fire, creativity, luck, abundance, purification, healing)
1/4-1/2 oz simple or honey syrup (I used my chamomile-orange Lammas syrup for creativity, abundance, & purification)
2-3 dashes angostura or black walnut butters (wisdom, grounding, protection)
1.5-2 oz bourbon (harvest, protection, grounding, karmic healing)
Optional: 1/4-1/2 oz liqueur of choice (I used hazelnut liqueur for creativity, wishes, luck, & protection)

IMG_8132

Instructions: In a bucket or old fashioned glass, add 1 orange peel, syrup of choice, and bitters. Muddle these ingredients together, tuning into the aligned vibrations, an envisioning your goal or the energy you seek to connect with. Add your ice cube(s), then pour in bourbon and any additional liqueurs you wish to add. Garnish with a smokey orange peel.

Beer Cocktail

With its grain base, beer is an easy & simple concoction to imbibe for the harvest energies of abundance, purification, ancestry, & grounding. But you can also use this in a cocktail. YES – a beer cocktail.

If you are looking for some magical mixed beverages to inspire the more transformative energies of Lammas/Lughnasadh, so you can go forward to harvest even more on the next two harvests, then this beer cocktail is for YOU! Immediately after a single sip of this concoction, I noticed I was more centered and felt a personal power and strength ringing through my body. Plus, it celebrates the harvest flavors (beer for grain harvest, apple to celebrate start of apple season), to bring in success & abundance! This delicious, slightly spicy, but nuanced beer cocktail will inspire an influx of energy, for purification, and motivation. For a tutorial, check out my instagram or YouTube.

IMG_8089

Ingredients:

1 thin ginger coin (money, success, power, healing, cleansing/purification)
1/2 oz chamomile-orange syrup (creativity, purification, abundance)
1 oz lemon (purification, longevity, friendship, fidelity, love)
1 oz apple brandy (love, fertility, healing, wisdom, divination)
3-4.5 oz beer (I used Belgium white/wheat beer, but you can use ale) – harvest, abundance, purification
Optional 1/2 oz bourbon (too add more flavor depth, +  ancestry, karmic patterns, & grounding/wisdom)

Instructions: Place ginger in the bottom of your cocktail shaker. Add your chamomile-orange syrup, or simple syrup. Muddle the ginger, visualizing its purification and energizing potency activating and intermingling with abundant & creative syrup. Connect with what your intentions are for the cocktail, and what energies you want to activate as the ingredients are infusing together. Add in lemon and apple brandy (and bourbon, if desired), ice. Shake, then strain into a beer tulip. Pour in beer on top, and adorn your cocktail with an orange or lemon peel, or a lemon wheel with a few pieces of chamomile adrift on it.

New Moon Margarita

A blackberry-rose margarita aligned to the energies of the July 2020 Cancer New Moon, to inspire emotional healing, energetic protection, and revitalization.

A blackberry-rose margarita aligned to the energies of the July 2020 Cancer New Moon, to inspire emotional healing, energetic protection, and revitalization.

Monday July 20 brings us the second new moon in Cancer of the season. While many might celebrate this as a time of emotional new beginnings, we have a lovely Sun-Saturn opposition bringing us challenges & delays that may inspire, the not-so-best of emotions…

Balance out and imbibe the energies of the Cancer New Moon with this mocktail & cocktail duo. Magically & astrologically aligned to inspire emotional balance, protection & healing, you can imbibe the best energies of this astrological weather, while neutralizing the less desirable.

For Simple Sipping:

Cocktail making can be easy! Just swap ingredients or remove as you see fit. Use the material here & the ingredient reference list towards the bottom to help guide you in your own unique concoction, and get creative in swapping ingredients you may not have.

The Cocktail

Magical Alignment: Healing, Protection, Beauty, Renewal, Sensuality

With this fruity, tantalizing margarita, it’s easy to imbibe the emotionally nurturing & beautifying associations of the Cancer New Moon. The seasonal star of this cocktail, blackberry, juices up this drink with its healing & protective potency, keeping you shielded while the energies of sweet rose inspire healing & intuition. Agave takes center-stage in this concoction as both tequila base and syrup, inviting in renewal, beauty, & rebirth. This juicy, blackberry-rose concoction will have you emotionally revived in no time.

JulyNewMoon_CocktailCLoseup

Ingredients

4 Blackberries
1/2 oz agave syrup
1 oz lime
1.5 oz tequila
1/2 oz cointreau or orange liqueur
6-8 dashes rose water
Optional: 1//4-1/2 oz Aloe Liqueur
Optional: lavender sprig &/or lime for garnish

Instructions: Place blackberries & agave syrup into the bottom of a cocktail shaker (if you don’t have a shaker, you can “build” this cocktail in a glass – just be sure to mix well & strain out blackberry bits). Muddle ingredients, imagining their healing & protective energies awakening & seeping out into the mixture. Add lime, tequila, cointreau, and rose water (you can also try muddling rose petals, or infusing the agave syrup with them if you don’t have rose water). If desired, add in aloe liqueur for extra lunar healing & protective potency. Add ice, and shake firmly until mixed. Double strain into a highball glass over ice, or into a margarita glass. Adorn with lime wedge. Imbibe, visualizing your concoction glowing with the lunar light.

Magical Bonus: Lavender can be a potent addition to enchant your drink with calm, clear thinking, or to bring out the latent sensual energies of this concoction to entice a partner. To add this magical enhancement, use a fresh sprig to either muddle with the blackberries, or to garnish the drink, or simply add lavender bitters.

Mocktail Version

It’s my firm belief any cocktail can be made into a mocktail! So why not imbibe the energies of moon in a non-alcoholic version, too? Switch out the lime for lunar-associated lemon, and choose between a sparkling soda water topper, or healing aloe juice to complete your virgin July New Moon Potion.

Ingredients

5 Blackberries
1 ounce lemon
1 ounce agave or rose-infused honey syrup
3 oz soda water or 4.5 oz aloe juice drink
Garnish: Lemon Wedge and/or Lavender Sprig

JulyNewMoon_Mocktail

Instructions: Muddle blackberries in your chosen syrup, perhaps with a little lemon wheel. As you do so, imagine the cleansing, healing energies of these ingredients “waking up” and activating. Add in ice, and slowly pour in soda water of aloe juice, imagining that your own emotional cup is full and balanced. Spend a moment visualizing the energy of the moon shining through these aligned ingredients, and imbibe while contemplating the the lunar energy.

Magical Alternative:
Rose Honey Syrup

Call down the energy of the Cancer New Moon and inspire love, beauty, and emotional luxury with a simple rose honey syrup! Associated with both the Moon and the sign of Cancer, it is of no surprise Rose is known for enhancing beauty, inspiring love, and promoting healing. Add in summery, soothing honey and you have a potent Lunar potion to add into mocktails, lunar honey lemonades, or pour over seasonal fruits for a nice self-care dessert.

RoseHoneySyrup

Ingredients

1 tablespoon dried rose petals (organic or food grade)
1/4 cup hot water
1/2 cup honey

Instructions: Set water to boil and grab an appropriate jar to hold your syrup. Spend a moment holding the rose petals, tuning into their energy buzzing between your hands, visualizing them glowing with the energies you desire. Place rose petals in your jar, and pour in hot water. Allow to steep for 5-10 minutes, then stir in honey until well mixed. Allow to chill, then use & refrigerate. If possible, refrigerate for 24 hours before use to allow for better flavor infusion, then strain & separate.

Magical Enhancements

For a little extra energetic “umph,” hold one of the following crystals as you sip your libation, or as you do some new moon in cancer self-care magic ~

Lepidolite, a Heart & Third Eye Chakra-associated stone, is perfect for enhancing the emotional balancing & psychic energies of the Cancer New Moon. Lepidolite promotes serenity and calm, inspiring balance in the emotional body, and enabling one to remain centered in response to otherwise adverse situations. Lepidolite is a great stone for assisting with excessive fear or worry, and helps with living mindfully in the moment.

Smokey Quartz is a premier grounding and detox energy stone! & Perfect for detoxing out any negative emotional energies. Cancer is known as a very healing, intuitive sign, which means it is a good time (especially with the challenges of Sun-Saturn Opposition) to pause, ground, and clear out old emotional debris. Use smokey quartz to help facilitate this detoxing process.

Moonstone is an obvious go-to for any moon-associated energies. However, Cancer is the only sign associated with the moon, & had the added bonus of enhancing psychic abilities and for balancing & protection emotions, which makes its relevance even more so. Use moonstone to allow your intuition and inner high priestess energy come through!

To enhance the innate energies of beauty with these Cancerian beverages, use Rose Quartz. Rose Quartz, another heart chakra stone, connects you with universal love and is a go-to for beauty & love magic. This beautiful stone is about loving oneself and recognizing the beauty within and all around. Rose quartz invites peace, comfort, and gratefulness!

To enhance the sensuality &/or emotional clearing energies of these cocktails, Garnet is a great choice. A sacral & root chakra associated stone, Garnet connects one to the energies of survival and draws repressed emotions to the surface, allowing one to recognize and heal. Its sacral associations also make garnet a great choice for enhancing sexual energy, and for fueling your inner fire and passion.

The Queen of Cups in the Tarot, is a great archetype & image to work with for this New Moon energy. She represents connection to one’s intuition, to compassion, and to emotional balance.

To work with the crystal energy, intention is always key! You can hold the crystal, and visualize a light awakening and vibrating within the crystal with your intention. Or simply hold it and tune into its frequency as you sip and meditate on the New Moon in Cancer ~

A Super Sippable Summer Solstice

SummerSolstice_Drinkaltar2

The hum of bees hangs in the air; flowers, herbs, and gardens are growing; the heat lingers in the afternoon. The longest of day of the year is here, and with it, the turn towards summer! And I think all that heat calls for some refreshing, chilled beverages.

Summer solstice, otherwise known as Litha, marks a time of play, childhood memories, abundance, and love. The sun is in its full power and strength, and sharing its full radiancy with the earth. It is a time of agriculture, change, manifestation, and power. And it’s simple to know what ingredients to put into a cocktail; you need only look around. Lavender and chamomile are blooming, strawberries and elder are plentiful. What better way to celebrate the abundance than in food and drink?

For Simple Sipping:

Cocktail making can be easy! Just swap ingredients or remove as you see fit. As a craft cocktail bartender and witch, I throw in as much herbal potency as possible to layer on the ~mixology magic~, but it is not necessary at all. Use the material here as reference to help guide you in your own unique concoction, and get creative in swapping ingredients you may not have.

Solstice Syrup

When it comes to choosing a cocktail sweetener for the buzzing solstice energy, honey is a natural choice. Thick and floral in nature, honey has long been associated with the sun and the harvest, and adds the energetic vibration of: purification, youth, health, wisdom, love and sexuality, and happiness – what better embodiment for the energy of solstice and solar radiance? Who would say no to that! You can stop there if you like, and have a delicious sweetener for your solstice cocktails. To make a simple honey syrup, you simply mix 1 part hot water to 1 part honey, and stir. Allow it to cool, and then it is good to go for cocktail making goodness!

However, should you choose, you can add a bit of magical herbalism through the opportunity of hot water…

Floral and soothing, the addition of calming chamomile and strengthening saffron adds extra solar radiancy to this honey syrup. As though resembling a little sun itself, the floral star of the season – chamomile – is energetically aligned to the sun, to peace & communication. Add potent saffron (also associated with the sun), to lends its signature fiery energy for strength, psychic abilities, and happiness, and you have a joyful, solstice -packed cocktail syrup.

Ingredients

1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup hot water
Optional: 1 tablespoon dried chamomile flowers (use a chamomile tea bag if desired)
Optional: 3 saffron threads

SummerSolstice_HoneySyrup

Instructions: Set hot water to boil (I often use an electric tea kettle). Gather chamomile and saffron in a bowl. Pour boiling water over the herbs, and allow to steep for 5 minutes. Add in honey and let cool. Strain as used. Use right away, or allow to infuse for 24 hours in refrigerator for extra flavor & potency.

~For an extra magical touch, spend a moment holding your hands over the herbs before adding the hot water, and visualize the sun’s radiance and light imbuing the herbs with the solstice energies of manifestation, power, and growth. Alternatively, you can try leaving the herbs out in the solstice sunlight from dawn to noon to become solarized.~

Solar Illumination

Mocktail

Magical Alignment: Illumination, Purification, Divination

Mocktails can be magical, too! With revitalizing rosemary, fresh mint, and our soothing solstice syrup, this delicious sparkling lemonade is rejuvenating and addictive! Packed with herbs to draw down that solar illumination, imbibe this delicious honey-lemonade for solstice work around clarity, illumination, & divination. Or just to enjoy a refreshing, purifying beverage under the sun.

SummerSolstice_mocktail

Ingredients

1 sprig of rosemary
7 mint leaves
1 oz honey syrup
1/2 oz lemon
3 oz soda
Optional: lavender sprig

Instructions: In the bottom of a glass, place rosemary, mint, and optional lavender. Add honey syrup, and muddle ingredients. Add lemon, ice, soda water, and stir to mix. Garnish with rosemary sprig.

~Magical Enhancement: rosemary is a potent herb for clarity and psychic ability. Before muddling, take a moment to tune into the vibration of rosemary and imagine it invoking solar illumination.

Buzzing Bees Knees

Cocktail

Magical Alignment: Happiness, Strength, Purification

What better way to encapsulate the buzzing energy of the Summer Solstice than with a bees knees? A zesty, refreshing bouquet of floral flavors, this brightening cocktail is aligned to the solstice energies of happiness, strength, purification, healing. And what better gin to use, than the aptly-named Hendrick’s Gin’s Midsummer Solstice? Add in some soothing & strengthening solstice honey syrup, and purifying lavender, and this cocktail is sure to have you in your happy place. Add in an optional 1/4-1/3 oz violet liqueur for a more floral, less zesty profile.

Ingredients

1.5 oz gin (I used Hendrick’s Midsummer Solstice)
3/4 oz solstice syrup or honey syrup
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
2-3 lavender bitters (or sprig)
Optional: 1/4-1/3 oz violet liqueur? (for a more floral flavor)

SummerSolstice_beesknees

Instructions: In a cocktail shaker, add gin, syrup, lemon, and bitters. (If using lavender sprig instead of bitters, be sure to muddle the sprig in the syrup first). Add ice, and shake. Double strain cocktail into a coupe glass, and adorn with lemon peel and flower garnish.

Summer Love

Cocktail

Magical Alignment: Love, Happiness, Peace

Summer wouldn’t be summer without a little heat. Fruity, dry, and refreshing, this solstice-enhanced French 75 is sure to add a bit of pep in your step. With sensual strawberry, lusty lavender, and enchanting elderflower, this bubbly concoction is sure to have you lucky in love. With the soothing & revitalizing solstice honey syrup and refreshing citrus, this witch’s brew is sure to put you in a good mood. Imbibe under the solstice sun for a super sippable, mood enhancing potable.

SummerSolstice_Cocktail2

1 small strawberry, sliced
2 lavender bitters (or sprig)
3/4 oz solstice syrup or honey syrup
3/4 oz lemon juice
1oz gin
1/2 oz elderflower liqueur
3 oz prosecco

Instructions: In the bottom of a cocktail shaker, add strawberry, lavender, and syrup. Muddle the strawberry and lavender, then add lemon, gin (I used Hendricks Gin’s Midsummer Solstice), and elderflower liqueur. Add ice and shake, then double strain into a wine glass or champagne flute. Top with Prosecco, and garnish with strawberry slice, lavender, and lemon peel as desired.

Magical Enhancement

For a little extra ~solstice sorcery~ work with one of the following crystals as you sip your libation, or as you do some solstice magic. The following crystals will help imbue all you do with some solar radiance:

Orange Calcite is a stone of creativity, sexuality, playfulness, and confidence. Inviting solar energy into your vibrational field, orange calcite can invite balance, joy and hope. Its inspiring energy ushers you to take action in your own life and break old patterns and habits.

Citrine embodies the energy of life, and as such, this stone transmutes negative energy into the positive. Citrine is a wonderful stone for empaths, or for those going through transitions or karmic shifts. Citrine can help connect you to your inner inspiration, and promote joy and happiness.

Sunstone is a crystal of confidence and joy. It’s solar connection inspires personal expansion and leadership. A stone of courage, sunstone invites the strength and energy you need to pursue your aspirations, and promote a healthy balance of give and take. Its solar radiancy also invokes positivity, joy, and happiness.

To work with the crystal energy, intention is always key! You can hold the crystal, and visualize a light (like the sun!) awakening and vibrating within the crystal with your intention. Or simply hold it and tune into its frequency as you sip and meditate on the summer sun ~

“Communication Breakdown”: A Blue Lagoon Variation

“Communication Breakdown”, and blue lagoon variation featuring the Throat Chakra card from The Psychic Tarot for the Heart oracle deck by John Holland

As if four planets in retrograde, an active eclipse season, and the turn towards summer heat wasn’t enough, Mercury Retrograde is right around the corner and we can already feel its impact. A time when communication and technology run amuck, Mercury Retrograde has grown in infamy in recent years. But don’t worry – this throat chakra-inspired Blue Lagoon variation, packed with clearing and calming sage, soothing peppermint, and communication-enhancing chamomile, is the perfect inspired beverage to keep you cool, calm, and collected in the summer heat.

The Syrup

Chamomile, Peppermint, & Sage

Energetic Inspiration: Communication, Healing, Purification

A simple, yet communication-potent tea-infused syrup. Packed with the herbal goodness of sage, peppermint, and chamomile, this calming, minty, & magically-aligned communication syrup is at the heart of this cocktail. (In fact, if you are going for a delicious mocktail, simply add this syrup to lemonade and add blue food coloring for that throat-chakra umph). Jupiter-associated Sage often invites purification, wise words, and healing, while peppermint has long been known to help soothe sore throats. Add in calming chamomile, and you have a syrup aligned for cool communication, purification, and balance, that you can add to this cocktail, to iced tea, lemonade, or even as a sweetener to your favorite tea!

ThroatChakra_Syrup

Ingredients

1 chamomile tea bag
1/2 tablespoon dried peppermint, or peppermint tea bag
5-7 medium-sized sage leaves
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup hot water

Instructions: Set water to boil. Place tea, sage, and dried peppermint in a mason jar. Take a second to pray over the herbs (for magical intention setting), imagining their energy opening up, as though a light growing is inside of them. When you feel an energetic buzzing, withdraw your hands, and pour now-ready hot water over the herbs. Let the herbs steep for about 5 minutes, covering the jar slightly. Then stir in sugar, cover the jar, and place in the fridge to help cool down. The syrup is ready to use once cooled, or you can let it sit for 24 hours for extra infusion. Strain before use.

The Cocktail

Energetic Alignment: Communication, Purification, Friendship

With its enticing hue and balanced taste, this modified blue lagoon cocktail is just the summer beverage needed to smooth the ride of mercury retrograde. Mercury- and Venus-aligned elderflower helps inspire loving communication, healing, and cleansing, while the addition of fresh, opening mint has long been associated with cleansing and invoking mental acuity and expression. And of course, the key ingredient responsible for the lovely color, Blue Curacao, inspires the loving and spiritual vibrations of the orange citrus. Add in some critical citrus juice and the syrup above, and you have delicious cocktail inspired by clear communication and self-expression. Served over chilling crushed ice, and the magical energies of mint, sage, elder and more, this refreshing libation is packed with throat chakra herbal potency.

Ingredients

7 leaves mint
1/2 oz syrup (listed above)
1.5 oz lemon juice
1 oz vodka
1/4 oz blue curaçao
1/4 elderflower liqueur
Crushed ice (for serving)

“Communication Breakdown”, and blue lagoon variation featuring the Throat Chakra card from The Psychic Tarot for the Heart oracle deck by John Holland

Instructions: In a shaker, place mint leaves, syrup, lemon juice, vodka, blue curaçao, and elder flower liqueur. Add ice and shake firmly, so that the mint broken up, and the flavor thereby enhanced. (You can also slap the mint before putting it in the cocktail, to express and awaken the oils). As you shake, visualize any communication blockages breaking away. Then strain the cocktail into a hurricane glass over crushed ice. Adorn with lemon slice and mint sprig.

Crystalline Energy Bonus

Whether you are looking to promote communication, self-expression, or smooth over communications during Mercury Retrograde, here are some of my favorite potent crystals to work with!

Amazonite: Connecting the heart and the throat chakra, Amazonite promotes clear communication of one’s feelings. It is particularly useful in communicating one’s personal truth to set clear boundaries. This will be a great energetic companion for this drink, for someone who’s voice and feelings tends to be “run over” by others.

Angelite: Angelite, like the name may suggest, is a wonderful stone for communicating with angels and imbuing a calming frequency (which will be GREAT for mercury retrograde). However, it is particularly useful for communicating gently, with diplomacy.

Blue Lace Agate – Associated with the throat chakra, blue lace agate is a powerful communication stone. Tuning you into your higherself, this stone will help you not only keep calm and relaxed, but also communicate with mental clarity amidst the communicative chaos and emotions that may arise at this time.

To work with the crystal energy, intention is always key! You can hold the crystal, and visualize a blue light (like the color of this drink!) expanding and growing stronger in your throat, vibrating with the crystal. If you are laying down, you can lay the crystal right on your throat, or simply hold the crystal in your left hand a few minutes each day with the intention of enhancing calm, truthful communication and diplomacy.

Disclaimer: All drinks and variations by WitchCraft Cocktails are inspired by energetic and witchcraft themes for fun and craft cocktail enjoyment, but make no claims as far as healing potency.
