Blood is Thicker Than Lots of Stuff: Chapter 3

I’ll be counting down to the April 27th release of Blood is Thicker Than Lots of Stuff, the next book in The Many Travails of John Smith, by sharing sample chapters, advance reviews, content warnings, and whatever else seems fun. Last week, I shared the prologue and first two chapters, where John’s internet date was interrupted by three very different vampires. Today, we pick up just after he got stuck with the bill. Here is Blood is Thicker Than Lots of Stuff: Chapter 3.

If you haven’t read In...

Blood is Thicker Than Lots of Stuff: Chapter 2

I’ll be counting down to the April 27th release of Blood is Thicker Than Lots of Stuff, the next book in The Many Travails of John Smith, by sharing sample chapters, advance reviews, content warnings, and whatever else seems fun. On Tuesday, I shared the prologue and Chapter 1. Today, we continue John’s very bad date, which has been crashed by no fewer than three vampires. Here is Blood is Thicker Than Lots of Stuff: Chapter 2.

If you haven’t read Investigation, Mediation, Vindication yet, plea...

Blood is Thicker Than Lots of Stuff: Prologue and Chapter 1

I’ll be counting down to the April 27th release of Blood is Thicker Than Lots of Stuff, the next book in The Many Travails of John Smith, by sharing sample chapters, advance reviews, content warnings, and whatever else seems fun. Today, we’ll start at the beginning! Also, because the book’s prologue is so short, I’m starting out with a two-for and sharing both the prologue and chapter 1.

If you haven’t read Investigation, Mediation, Vindication yet, please be aware that some of these sample cha...

Cover Reveal? Meh. Cover Reveals? Hell, yes!

What’s better than a cover reveal? How about two of them?

Long-time readers of this blog know I’ve been planning to commission a new cover for Investigation, Mediation, Vindication. As much as I liked the original design, I wanted something more genre-appropriate to attract the urban fantasy audience.

This is the first time I’ve redone a cover of one of my existing books, and I normally wouldn’t have made a blog post out of it… but we went ahead and also commissioned the cover to IMV’s forthcomi...

Things I’ve learned in (slightly more than) a year of publishing

Lately, it feels like all I’ve been doing is counting down to releases, announcing promotions, and kvetching about the year 2020.

As much fun as all of that is for me, my goal with this blog was to have a mix of book updates AND writing-related thoughts. I’m not big on giving writing tips, because I still have so much to learn, but I think there’s value in sharing our experiences. Less this is what you should do and more this is what I’ve noticed.

With that in mind, and seeing as how it’s been r...

New Release: A Sure Thing

As newsletter subscribers already know, I’ve released the latest novelette in my Stories from a Post-Break World series! A Sure Thing is now free-to-read on Kindle Unlimited or available for purchase in digital format!

While See These Bones and its sequels are understandably focused on Damian and his struggles, it’s a big, broken world out there. The Stories from a Post-Break World series offers brief glimpses of events and places beyond Damian’s reach. These stories often touch on locations or ...

2021 Writing Goals

Photo by Markus Winkler on Unsplash

When we began 2020, nobody knew just what was in store for us. Sometimes, the best thing you can say about a year is that you made it through. But I covered that already in Saying Goodbye to 2020. We’re in 2021 now, this post is four weeks late instead of the usual two, and it’s time to discuss the new year and all that I hope to accomplish. That’s right! It’s once again time to share my writing goals for the year.

My 2021 Writing GoalsFinish the third novelette set in the post-Break world...

Saying Goodbye to 2020

It’s become tradition for me to write a goodbye letter to the year that’s almost over… sort of a silly way of summing up both the good and the bad of the preceding 365 days, while cleansing the palate in anticipation of the coming new year.

I’m not going to do that this year, for two reasons:

2020 lasted 92,067 days. I barely remember September, let alone the entire year.
Every commercial on TV is already recapping 2020 for us ad nauseum, because the only thing better than experiencing 2020 is ...

2020 Review: My Top 5 Posts

It’s that time again. The stockings are hung, the whisky is poured, the NBA games are scheduled… yep, that’s right: it’s the night before Christmas! I wasn’t planning a Christmas blog post this year, but then Cox decided to kill my internet access for two days, and Tuesday’s post was, by necessity, rescheduled to today. Don’t worry though: it’s a short one!

As I did last year, I thought it would be fun to take a quick look back on the year that was. For those looking for substantive thought, ana...

2020: Year-End Report Card

For the last two years, Ive had a blog post listing my writing goals for the coming year. Making those goals public has been a great way of both letting you all know whats coming and holding myself accountable, and I suspect Ill continue the practice for years to come.

2020 is, of course, a very unique year; a collection of individual hellscapes somehow packed into 12 months. Nevertheless, the year that would never end is almost done, and its time to look back on my goals to see how well I...
