Poetry: Funeral Pyre

“Funeral Pyre”

Grey snow in the air
and the wind that spins

around and up and through
skeletons of what was,

silhouettes that crumble
and disappear.

Light refracts and bends,
reflects and resonates,

and a sky bleeds
into the night.

I cannot.
I cannot breathe.

Sing your anthems.
Beat your drum.

Remember me
to your children’s children.

2020 Writing Goals

It took everything we had. It took grit and gumption and the unconstrained passage of time, but we finally did it. We made it to the new year! A year of optimism, baby yoda memes, 20/20 vision jokes, and, of course, goals and resolutions. Which means it is finally time to share my 2020 writing goals, in all their wildly-optimistic glory.

My 2020 Writing Goals Neatly sidestep the question of whether goals are the same as resolutions by exclusively using the word goals in this and future...

A Goodbye Letter to 2019

Dear 2019,

At the risk of repeating myself… you’ve been a year.

The older I get, the more individual years tend to blur together. As a child, every year felt different and new. As an adult, it often feels like one single strand of time, occasionally dotted with holidays and vacations.

In many ways, you were a lot like 2018, which was, in itself, quite similar to 2017. Yes, this is the end of a decade, but from ten thousand feet up, certain themes tend to repeat themselves on the global and...

2019 Review: My Top 5 Posts

The year is almost over, and 2020 is lurking somewhere in the clouds above us, waiting for the moment we should cast our eyes skyward to come crashing down upon us in all of its fury. But we’ll worry about 2020 some other time. Like… a week or so from now.

As I did last year, I thought it would be fun to take a quick look back on the year that was. For those looking for substantive thought, analysis, and pontification on the year that was 2019… you’ve definitely come to the wrong site. But...

December Wonderings

And poof. Just like that, it’s December.

Time has a way of speeding up around the holidays, and this year has been no exception. Between See These Bones’ book launch, a five day water fast, Thanksgiving, my birthday, and a trip to Florida for my mother’s birthday, you’d be right to wonder if I’d gotten any writing done at all.

And the answer is… sort of. But I’ll get to that. First, let’s wrap up the last month of news in pseudo-interview format.

How’s See These Bones doing?

Sales remain...

See These Bones: Post-Release Update

So… a thing happened last week, and contrary to my fears, the world didn’t stop spinning. Nor did the barbarian hordes sweep down from the north to sack Rome for an eighth time. In Las Vegas, we did have a week of unseasonably warm weather for November, but something tells me that had nothing to do with my book launch.

Even so, it’s been quite the week. I’m going to do a real post-mortem sometime next month–to, you know, give the mortem time to happen–but I wanted to offer a quick post-release update.

See These Bones: Release Day, Advance Review Round-up, and Content Warnings

[image error] Release Day

After more than three years, dozens of query letters, countless cover-to-cover revisions and editing sessions, several months of cover shenanigans, a live-action trailer, and eight-plus posts of countdown hype, the release day of See These Bones is finally here! Today, readers from around the world will finally get to experience the post-Break world through the eyes and mind of my possibly doomed and very-much-broken protagonist, Damian Banach.

I’m equal parts happy, excited, and… worried.

Why worried? Well, other than t...

See These Bones: Chapter 5

See These Bones is launching next Tuesday! I’ve been counting down to the November 5th release date by sharing chapters from the book. In Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, we learned a bit about our protagonist and his not-so-stellar childhood. In Chapter 3, and Chapter 4, Damian and the mysterious Mr. Grey left Bakersfield to head south through the post-Break wasteland. Chapter 5 explains where they are headed and why.

CHAPTER 5

We’d traveled through another few miles of dust and dirt, the temperature...

See These Bones: Chapter 4

We’re now one week away from the launch of See These Bones and I’ve been counting down to the November 5th release date by sharing chapters from the book. In Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, we learned a bit about our protagonist and his not-so-stellar childhood. In Chapter 3, Damian tested his boundaries with the mysterious Mr. Grey and was reminded of how little leverage he has. Chapter 4 continues their journey.

CHAPTER 4

There’s nothing to like about Bakersfield. Pretty sure that was true pre-Brea...

The Stats Behind See These Bones

With the release of See These Bones now less than two weeks away, I thought it would be fun to take a break from all the process-heavy, behind-the-scenes posts to share some quick, mainly ridiculous, stats about the book. All numbers provided here represent my best guesses after a less-than-careful review of the manuscript, and I reserve the right to be proven utterly incorrect by future readers. I’ve also tried to keep things spoiler-free.
