Barnes and Noble Booksclub

Hi Guys, very quick post to say that the Barnes and Noble bookclub have chosen The Poison Throne as thier April book. I only found this out very late in the game, but the discussion can go on as long as folks want it to apparently. So, if you'd like to stop by and ask some questions, or just chat about the book, feel free. I'll be popping in now and then, and answering as many questions as I can.

The Art of Seduction

US/UK cover for The Poison Throne.

One of my favourite review sites is the always interesting booksmugglers site, where Thea and Ana do a cheerful, entertaining and intelligent job of ripping apart, drooling over, and generally dissecting all manner of fantasy books, comics and film. You should give the place a visit sometime, it's good craic (and also as bad as crack in so far, as once tried, forever addicted. Be warned, the booksmugglers will eat up your time.)

Anyhoo, the dastardly duo have...

Had a ball, did a reading on the moon, met a hero.

I done did have me a blast at Cúirt. It's got to be one of the most laid back, seriously lively and stimulating literary festival's around. Even with all the chaos and cancellations caused by The Ash Cloud, the organisers were invariably friendly and pleasant and managed somehow to make all their author's feel at home and well looked after. Thanks so much, guys!

Reading at the Nuns Island theatre was AWESOME! The theatre is in the round, so it suited my usual very...

Cúirt and me, Friday.

Nun's Island. Galway.

Nun's Island. Galway.

I'm going to be at Nun's Island Theatre in Galway on Friday 11th as part of the Cúirt literary Festival. I'll be doing a reading from The Crowded Shadows. As usual it'll be a little be gory, hence the over 13's warning on the festival ad's!

I'm looking forward to this event even more so than usual, as I've invited a very special guest to attend. My good friend Phil Ó'Cuimín is one of the two women ( her daughter Sorcha being the other) who gifted me the extraordinarily...

Harry and Tina

Harry and Tina, spying from the Flys.

As usual while I'm writing, I'm also drawing. I do this for lots of reasons: to entertain myself - to relax - to keep my characters solid in my head. But I guess mostly because I love to draw!

Anyhoo, I did this little sketch today of Harry and Tina (characters from my new WIP) It's very very rough, just a very quick biro sketch on the back of an MS print out which I was editing. Still and all I like it, it genuinely captures the moment for me, and it...

Good Luck, Bro! We're proud of you!

My bro, Fergus Cahill.

My bro, Fergus Cahill

This is my brother, Fergus.  He's off to Haiti tomorrow to help set up and run the kitchens that he and his colleagues have designed for use in reconstruction work in Haiti.

It won't be the first time we've waved Fergs off on such a journey, the Irish Army have always been heavily involved in peace keeping and reconstruction projects around the world, and as a member of the defence forces, Fergus and his colleagues are often a voluntary part of these worthwhile and...

Thanks Jennifer at Eason's Cavan!

eason_logo Many many thanks to Jennifer at Eason's Cavan who worked through her lunch break yesterday, and patiently did test print after test print for me while we tried to find a nice look  for the promotional art work I've been doing.

In the end we came up with quite a wacky, but I think lovely, solution and I was just delighted with the results. We'd never have got there had Jennifer not been so damned patient, though, and painstaking and professional in her approach to her work! Thanks again to...

Out Damned Spot!

shame on you hackers!!!!

shame on you hackers!!!!

Well my website host Network Solutions have contacted me to say that their server is clear of hackers, and that my blog is now ok to visit again. Phew! I must say, Network Solutions have been very helpful and supportive during this - I am SO not a tech-head and could do little more then flail about helplessly and hope to God that none of you were affected just from visiting my blog. (Can I suggest that you do a virus scan of your computers? Even if you don't think...

Shades of Grey and the Cult of the Gun

Latest post at Babelclash. Why you won't find any Yippee Kiiyay Motherf****rs in Moorehawke.

YippeeKiiaaaa M****r F****r.

Don't get me wrong, I love a good Die Hard movie as much as the next person; I love a good western. I like it when a clearly defined good guy beats a clearly defined bad guy over the head with his truncheon and everyone wins in the end. Just don't expect any of it in my Moorehawke books – ok? Because as much as I like John McClain wisecracking his way through a series of...

Out of the Mist

New post up on Babelclash.  Extract below.

As writers we sit for months at a time dragging words and sentences from the chaos of our brains and forcing them into order on a page. By doing this we hope to make others believe in the existence of a place which has never exist. When they read our words, hopefully they will see and feel and hear a world where shadows have never moved across the grass, where the rain has never fallen, where birds have never opened their throats and s...
