I heart graphic design

I love this groovy little video. It shows the many steps in the designing and making of one of Orbit's brilliant book covers ( in this case Gail Carrager's Blameless)

Translation Article in Orbit (hyuk hyuk)

MAJOR shout out to Dubreys on Grafton Street and to the very interesting and lively young folks I met at today's reading. You rocked, lads ( and lass) I loved talking with ye.

Also, I wrote a wee article for Orbit on the importance of working closely with your translator. It's up on the Orbit blog if you fancy having a look at it.

extract from article.

One of the most important things I took home from this conference, was the understanding that translations simply cannot be done without...

Shaun Tan only gets more adoreable

One of my fav scenes from Tales from Outer Suburbia

One of my fav scenes from Tales from Outer Suburbia

Last week the amazing Shaun Tan won the Premier's Award and the Children's Literature Award at Adelaide Writers' Week. Lucky for us, Read Alert posted a transcript of his lovely and funny acceptance speech. I'm a huge fan of Shaun's, it's fantastic to see his work honoured in this way.

(Many thanks to my beloved Alien Onions for bringing this to my attention.)

March Events

I'm concentrating hard on the new book these days, but still I have some pleasant Extra-curricular things lined up for March. I'm very much looking forward to these - it's nice to have an excuse to lift the eyes from the computer screen and step out into the sunshine once and a while!

Irish edition The Crowded Shadows.

Friday March 5th, I'll be in Dublin (Dubrey on Grafton Street to be exact) reading from The Crowded Shadows. If you have some spare time on Friday morning come on down and say...

Yellow Roses and Tea

I've been merrily filing all my Moorehawke editorial notes and e-mails into my brand new folders ( I prefer to do most of my editorial

communications via e-mail. I think it's a much clearer way of expressing oneself and it's easier to keep track of things. So I end up with a sea of notes at the end of each book.)

It was an odd treat to find this particular note at the top of the pile marked 'Notes to Editor on reading Poison Throne Galley'. Odd because I'd only ...

Alberon!

It's been a totally unproductive day, writing wise. Not a tap done to the new book. Spent the whole time organising my new shelves and now must dash to hospital to see my beloved man. But behold what wonders did arrive for my happiness! It's the O'Brien Press cover for The Rebel Prince! I am loving this depiction of Alberon - he's so like I imagined that it is spooky! Look at him! All hard-eyed and Shakespearian - plotting and planning and stirring up trouble. You go Albi!

Huge thanks to the O...

Shhhhhhhh

I've snuggled back down into the leaba for a while. I have a book ( Anne Featherstone's wonderful 'Walking In Pimlico') a cup of tea and some toast. I can see down into the valley from my window, and the world is once again secreted under snow. A dog's bark travels for miles - a lonely sound. The radiator is sighing gently - a comforting sound. My children are asleep. I miss my husband, who is in the hospital; I want him to be here warm and cosy in the bed with me.

The bedroom is scented with...

Starred Review in PW!

So utterly delighted to have received a starred review from Publishers weekly! Can hardly sit still long enough to type this!

I'M SO HAPPY!

[image error]The Poison Throne Celine Kiernan. Orbit, $14.99 paper (480p) ISBN 978-0-316-07706-4

Atmospheric, complex, and intense, Kiernan's debut fantasy, set in a sort of alternate 15th-century Europe, mixes vengeful ghosts and talking cats into political intrigue. Fifteen-year-old Wynter Moorehawke's return to court after five years away should be joyous, but she...

Letter to Laura

In relation to the previous post, where I drew Laura the chart of Wynter's clothes. Here is a copy of my short letter which might help to separate the fiction from the fact :0) I hope Laura doesn't mind my sharing this with you.

-0-

Dear Laura,

Finally I get around to answering your lovely letter. Please do excuse my terrible handwriting and my spelling – I try hard to improve, but I'm afraid my spelling will never be something I'm proud of.

So you asked me about Wynter's clothes! I figured the...

Wynter's Clothes

I got a letter from one of my readers asking what Wynter's clothes looked like. I'm very fond of this reader, she's e-mailed me several times. Seeing as how she took the time to hand-write me a letter this time, and seeing as how I'm on a two week break at the moment, I thought  make this wee chart for her - so that she'd know exactly what Wyn wears in book one of the Moorehawke trilogy.

I hope you like this, Laura. I'll print it and send it to you this week :0) (if you click the picture it...
