Empowerment Series: Fashion Designer & Founder, JVLAURANT, Content Creator, Jennifer Laurantius Shares Love of Fashion with AW

Jennifer Laurantius is a Fashion Designer & Founder of JVLAURNT, and a Content Creator. Her NYC-based brand is dedicated to ethical and circular fashion. The designer’s work has been recognized through projects with brands such as Adidas NYC and the H&M Group. She has been featured on CNN Indonesia and Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam, and was recognized by public figures Keke Palmer and Taryn Manning. The creator’s wins don’t stop there, as she has also worked on projects with TikTok UK & Spain, Tinder, Amazon, L’Oreal, Tresamme, and others.

We love fashion and seeing the creations on the runway, award shows, television, film, and stage – even on the streets of metropolitan cities like NYC, Milan, Paris, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City! It is amazing to see a designer’s vision come to life. But the process behind it all is just as important, or more important than the designs. Fashion creators have challenges that include deadlines, creative blocks, pressures of success, and the stress of delivering a great product.

In EPS119 of the AW Confidential Podcast, AW sits in-studio with Jennifer for a candid conversation about the designer’s passion, success, rejection, finding purpose, manifesting dreams, and an insider’s look into the world of fashion design.

Behind-the-Scenes of “Unstoppable”: Jharrel Jerome, Anthony Robles, & Judy Robles in NYC

The journey to greatness comes at a high cost. It is the road less traveled because enduring the pain it takes to grab the prize can be grueling. The path is filled with setbacks, rejection, and disappointments that sometimes, feel impossible to overcome. Anthony Robles conquered his struggles and won, over and over, again. He felt the fear and did it anyway, until achieving something elusive to many. The athlete beat his monsters and came out on the other side, feeling worthy and seen.

In January, AW attended an exclusive advance screening of “Unstoppable” at The Whitby Hotel in NYC. The film tells the story of Robles but also highlights the dynamics of a mother-son relationship, the importance of family, and the impact an abusive relationship can have on everyone in the home. The production is based on the book Unstoppable: From Underdog to Undefeated: How I Became a Champion by Anthony Robles and Austin Murphy.

The champ grew up in an abusive household with limited resources. His mother, Judy Robles provided the best possible life with what she had, giving her family everything they needed to survive. He worked a job to help his family and lived a relatively normal life, except that he was anything but ordinary. He began wrestling in high school, the smallest one on his team. By his junior and senior years, he finished with a 96–0 record and then went on to become a two-time Arizona State champion.  Having a birth defect, being born without a right leg, ultimately, became his superpower. This three-time all-American Wrestler,  2011 NCAA National Wrestling Champion, and Nike-sponsored athlete has a relentless drive to be the best and is truly unstoppable.

In the film, Robles is portrayed by Dominican and Bronx native, Jharrel Jerome. He is best known for When They See Us, Moonlight, Monster, I’m a Virgo, and other films. The uber-talented actor, plays opposite Jennifer Lopez, not from the same block but does come from the same NYC borough. The supporting cast of Don Cheadle, Michael Peña, and Bobby Cannavale did a phenomenal job, making us believe the journey and forget they were actors for the 1 hour and 56 minutes we watched them. The ensemble cast drew the audience into an emotional web that played at our heartstrings.

After the screening, we were invited to a Q&A session and reception with Jharrel, Anthony, and Judy, where they shared their thoughts on playing real-life characters, the emotions behind the scenes, and what it means to be unstoppable. Anthony shared words that stayed with me, hopefully, they can inspire you, too. He said, “Never let your challenges be your excuse.”

We spend most of our time pondering everything that goes wrong, reasons we can’t get ahead, or blame shortcomings for our inability to achieve dreams. If we don’t believe in ourselves and neglect the importance of a support network, the road can be long and lonely.

This film is a wonderful reminder that we always have a choice. Either, you surrender to fear and doubt or become an unstoppable force. Wrestle the struggles, ask for help, and build yourself up, as you learn the lessons that make you stronger and wiser. Believe you are enough and it will be your greatest superpower.

The biographical sports drama is now streaming on Prime Video. The world needs inspiration right now, and this is a great one. Make sure you check it out!

Behind the Scenes with Chuck and Bree West: The Heart and Vision Behind “A Wesley South African Christmas“

Creating a holiday film is no small feat but for Executive Producers, Chuck West and Bree West, “A Wesley South African Christmas.” was much more than a movie—it was a mission. This heartwarming holiday story set against the vibrant backdrop of Durban, South Africa, brings a uniquely international twist to a beloved genre. At a recent roundtable discussion with the lead cast and the Wests, it became clear that this project was fueled by passion, purpose, and perseverance.

Executive Producer, Chuck West described the film as more than a cinematic endeavor, calling it “A movement.” His words echoed a theme of unity and transformation: “We can identify differences and turn liabilities into assets. This is not a film; it’s a movement,” he shared with conviction. Executive Producer, Bree West spoke about the divine inspiration behind the project. She described bringing the film to life as nothing short of extraordinary: “This was a divine experience. Bringing the product to life was a journey,” she said, her voice filled with pride.

Bringing the vision to fruition took nine script drafts, an unwavering commitment to the South African location, and three weeks of intensive filming. The Wests and their team hired 400 local South African men and women, blending the talents of American actors with the rich culture and scenery of South Africa.

The result? It is a visually stunning film, emotionally resonant, and brimming with the holiday spirit.

At the heart of “A Wesley South African Christmas” is family. The story dives deep into the challenges of two families, even amidst the joy of the holiday season. One of the film’s most poignant moments unfolds when a health scare shakes the family to its core, tugging at viewers’ heartstrings. The personal struggles of certain family members are woven seamlessly into the narrative, offering authenticity and depth.

However, the Executive Producers intentionally balanced the emotional weight with moments of levity. A highlight is the hilariously relatable at-home talent show—a scene inspired by the West’s family traditions. Chuck and Bree’s attention to detail and personal touch make these moments feel genuine, drawing audiences into the warmth and chaos of family life.

Filming in South Africa was a deliberate choice that added depth and richness to the story. From the breathtaking landscapes to the local talent brought on board, the film celebrates the beauty and diversity of South African culture. It’s a letter to the season of togetherness, not just within families, but across borders and communities.

Their decision to involve many local South Africans was a testament to their commitment to authenticity and representation. The blending of American and South African cultures results in a film that feels familiar and refreshingly new.

As the roundtable discussion wrapped up, it was evident that “A Wesley South African Christmas” was more than just a movie—it was a labor of love. The dedication and collaboration that went into the project shine through in every frame. The producers’ ability to turn their vision into reality, while honoring the spirit of the season and the essence of family is nothing short of inspiring.

“A Wesley South African Christmas” promises to warm hearts. It reminds audiences of the true meaning of love, family, and unity—wrapped in the beauty of South Africa.

Empowerment Series: Adia Smith-Eriksson, Actress in the Role of Ranger West of Netflix’s Action/Sci-Fi film “ATLAS”

I will never forget seeing Wonder Woman on screen for the first time. The superhero symbolized physical beauty but also strength during a time when women were generally perceived as damsels in distress. Princess Diana was stronger than most men, exuded wisdom, and fought for justice and peace. Thankfully, modern society has delivered its version of Wonder Woman, and we see them walk in the mortal world, every day.

Actress Adia Smith-Eriksson was born in the UK and raised in Sweden. She had supporting roles in the film Odd Man Rush with Jack Mulhern and Caspar Phillipsona and television credits from shows like Barry and Bull. Most recently, she played Ranger West in Netflix’s #1 hit film ATLAS, starring Jennifer Lopez, Sterling K Brown, and Simu Liu.

She is a badass, whether, on-screen or off the clock, unafraid of new adventures. AW sat down with the actress to discuss the film, working with an all-star cast, lessons learned from her mother, and her love for adrenalin.

When considering potential roles, do you intentionally look for strong characters? How important is it, to see powerful women in roles like Atlas Shepherd or Ranger West?  I’m always super grateful when one of these characters comes my way. It’s nice to see them, as a reflection of who I am. Also, we must have that representation. Little girls see women as capable, strong, and badass.  Today, we have all these strong female leads. Look at J. Lo, she kills in every film she does. Growing up with these role models and seeing ourselves on screen is necessary.  Someday, I hope to count myself among this list of badass women on screen, it would be a dream come true!

I have always looked up to my mom as a source of strength. She is one of my biggest role models. Honestly, I’d say that in comparison, I did not feel super strong or capable of growing up. She tried putting me in martial arts lessons when I was a child, I ran away from my opponent! I was not ready for it at an early age but it’s one of those things you grow into. Now, I enjoy that type of training like taekwondo and learning stunts! It’s fun being able to take my power back. It has been great to learn these skills, not just to use them on-screen but also to protect myself and have a basic level of defense.

This film has actors like Jennifer Lopez, and Liu Brown leading the cast. Can you share anything you learned on the set from any of them that you will take with you, as you move forward with your acting career?  I’d say, stepping up to the level of professionalism and being ready to work but also finding the joy in it. It is something that I truly admire about Sterling. He made it such a fun experience with his super charismatic persona, and cracking jokes. It helped me not take things, too seriously. This was the biggest production I’ve worked on. I somewhat walked in feeling green, but learned it was okay to take space and I deserved to be there, too. I took it all in stride, got comfortable, and remembered we were all here to have fun.

In real life, you are a bad-to-the-bone kind of girl! I read that in addition, to acting, you are also a classically trained pianist. You enjoy hiking, climbing, roller skating, and hitting the slopes! Where does that thirst for adventure come from? Is there anything you have not tried that you would like to?  I’ve always been a bit of an adrenaline junkie. I love to go climbing. No heli-skiing or anything like that, I don’t have a death wish! I want to toe the line of doing it safely but enjoy the activities. This love kicked off even more post-pandemic. I believe after being restricted and stuck indoors for so long, suddenly, there was an opportunity to go back and do these things. I decided I was going to do more. Soon, I will go skydiving with my friend for the first time in Hawaii. It may be a once-in-a-lifetime thing, I won’t know until I do it. We’ll see.

Your mother is a karate-trained, former police officer. How did growing up with a strong and empowered maternal figure impact you, as you evolved into the woman you are today?  It all made sense, growing up. I’m sure she had a soft side but as a strong, empowered, maternal figure, having that present, seeing her strength, feeling it, and knowing it is achievable was powerful. She did not take bullshit from anyone and I love that. She has a no-nonsense attitude, and I try to take that with me. Sometimes, I find myself in certain situations, and ask myself”What would she do? How would she deal with this?”

We like to end interviews with a quote, mantra, or advice for our community. None of us feel strong all the time. For anyone listening who may feel exhausted from life’s difficulties, can you share any words of encouragement that help you when you are not feeling your best?  I have no idea what tomorrow holds. I was unsure if I’d book the ATLAS film. If you would ask when I came here, did I think I would be tapped for this film? No. But I take it one day at a time. What is going to happen, will happen. What is meant for you will find you.

AW is grateful to Adia for sharing her story with our community. The conversation served as inspiration on a day when it was needed. It was a reminder that we are born strong and have the potential to be and do what we set our minds to. There is incredible beauty in strength. Therefore, when you look at yourself in the mirror, even on your worst day, tap into the wonder woman in you. You are a wonderful being, capable of greatness.

The interview is available on AW Confidential Podcast on Apple, Spotify, and AmazonMusic podcasts. You can also watch it on AW Confidential’s YouTube TV channel.

How the W Hotels “What She Said” Initiative is Driving Progress in Gender Equality

Modern-day women are fighting to have their voices heard. We are collectively pushing back on gender inequality and letting society know “This is not okay.” When the opportunity arises to speak up against the unfairness and disadvantages we face daily, women have stepped up to the podium. We’re now taking our power back, beginning with breaking the silence but having supportive allies across different industries is also key to achieving the necessary gender balance.

In 2016, W Hotels took a step forward to encourage women to speak up. The world-renowned brand created the What She Said initiative to praise womanhood and help raise their voices. The platform organizes several well-attended events throughout the year. You can always count on influential speakers to stimulate and inspire conversations that encourage, educate, and spread awareness about the progress in the gender equality movement.  In the past, panels have included pop culture icons like Diane von Furstenberg,  Ava Duvernay, LeToya Luckett, Rachel Zoe,  Cheryl Hines, and Jenna Lyons. W Hotels aims to cultivate community and deliver engaging conversations about equality issues we are tackling today.

On September 5th, AW attended the What She Said event at the W New York – Times Square hosted by Fashion Week Haus. The space was filled with inspiration and provocative dialogue. Amazing women from near and far, connected and empowered one another. The night’s agenda included a VIP PRE-Party with a pop-up store, a special bourbon experience by Angels Envy, and a panel discussion with Media Personality & Speaker, Daisy Kent – Author, Activist, & Bachelor Contestant, Farai Simoyi – Netflix Next in Fashion Star & Owner of Narativ, and Elizabeth Weber – Love Island & Owner the Content Club. The women on the stage shared a piece of their journey, as they figured out the path to their dreams. The night closed with a fabulous fashion show from The NARATIV HOUSE.

As I looked around the room, it was evident that many wonderful conversations were being had throughout the space. The greatest takeaway for me was the energy of the night. I walked away re-invigorated and ready to walk into a new level of my dreams. I am grateful to the W Hotel for creating these fantastic spaces and hospitality and to all the women present who were open to genuine connection.

Empowerment Series: AW Founder Unwraps Graves’ Disease Diagnosis

On August 6, 2024, Star Wars, Actor, Daisy Ridley shared her 2023 Graves Disease diagnosis in Women’s Health. She opened up about her condition, symptoms, and the perils of normalizing not feeling well.

Our bodies speak to us. If we are in tune with it, we can recognize the signals it sends when something is not working properly. I knew something was “off” with mine but never imagined my own body would betray me this way.

In 2023, I was distracted by stressful changes including the impact of a pandemic, a toxic job environment, a child leaving home for college, a sick family member, and a long-distance relationship. For months, as I focused on life, my physical well-being suffered. A body screamed for help and I neglected the signs.

Hand tremors prevented me from holding a steady glass.Rapid weight loss brought my weight down to less than 90 pounds.Heat sensitivity and profuse sweating made it impossible to stay comfortable.Anxiety, depression, and irritability drastically affected my emotional stability.Insomnia depleted my energy, resulting in severe Fatigue. An inability to focus hindered me from doing the things I love most – reading and writing!Consistent Rapid Heart Rate was alarming. Sitting at a doctor’s office for an annual physical, I experienced one of my scariest moments – a heart rate of close to 170 bpm without physical activity or distress. *The American Heart Association , reports 60 and 100 bpm, as the average resting heart rate.

If you can, for a moment, imagine experiencing the combined symptoms while being stripped of your skin’s natural glow and shedding clumps of hair each day. Bearing witness to an overall deterioration of the woman I was put me on edge. I barely recognized the person in the mirror, more importantly, I was terrified.

New anxieties crept in, as I spoke to the doctor about potential causes for my symptoms. Results couldn’t come back soon enough. Finally, after weeks of repeatedly being poked with needles, a series of diagnostics tests, confirmed suspicions.

There are millions of people in this country without reliable medical coverage or no insurance at all. Having the right doctors was essential to getting an accurate and relatively quick diagnosis. I am grateful for a good primary physician and endocrinologist who cared enough to be diligent.

I live with Graves Disease, an autoimmune system disorder characterized by the overproduction of the thyroid hormone caused by Hyperthyroidism. The antibody TRAb and Thyroid function test (TSH, T3, T4) confirmed a diagnosis. The excess of the hormone was manifesting classic symptoms.

To educate and best care for myself, I researched the condition and found interesting facts.

Women over the age of 40 are at most risk, much more than men. If you are in your late 40s to early 50s, some of the symptoms can mimic menopause. The disease can result in problems with a woman’s menstrual cycle and hypersensitivity to heat. The ATA (American Thyroid Association) estimates that 20 million people in the United States live with thyroid disease and up to 60% of cases are undiagnosed. Women are 5 to 8 times more likely to suffer from thyroid disease than men.The causes of the condition are largely unknown but triggers may include family history, stress, pregnancy, or having another autoimmune disorder such as lupus or celiac disease. Some patients with Graves disease experience eye problems such as irritation, double vision, and Graves Ophthalmology when eye sockets bulge outward.

The good news is the disease that produces antibodies to attack the thyroid glands is treatable with antithyroid medication. Although treatment can be lifelong, it helps lower or set barriers against the hormone, although it’s not for everyone. Alternatively, Radioactive Iodine (IRA) or surgery to remove all or most of the thyroid are available. Consult a doctor when deciding the best course of action for your case.

Catching it early is critical to help prevent serious medical complications. Heart problems such as atrial fibrillation, arrhythmia, and even heart failure are possible without proper care. Osteoporosis or a Thyroid Storm can also pose serious consequences, if neglected.

My physical health has never had major issues. Passing annual exams with flying colors was a box checked without a second glance. Learning to live with a lifelong disorder that may require me to take a pill every day is something, I’m still processing. I contemplated not taking the medication because of concerns about side effects. However, if the cost of feeling better in the long run is experiencing temporary discomfort then it’s worth it.

It has been more than a year since treatment began. I’m feeling like myself, again with some tweaks along the way. The combination of a beta blocker to help control symptoms with antithyroid medication and monthly blood work to review levels have been successful, so far. The goal is to go into remission at some point in time. Meanwhile, changes to my nutritional plan are in place to help my body stay healthier.

The decision to share this story comes out of a responsibility to the women in our communities. We can spread awareness in different ways but to make a true impact, let’s bring people into our experience. Allowing ourselves to be vulnerable can encourage others to feel less alone and us, too.

If you feel something isn’t right with your body, heed the warning. Make an appointment with your doctor or find one that will listen. There is no harm in doing your research, asking hard questions, or getting a second opinion. Make sure you do everything possible to protect your health, so you can live the life you are meant to.

To learn more about my diagnosis and Graves Disease, please watch the special, streaming on AW Confidential TV on YouTube. The episode can also be seen or listened to on Apple and Spotify Podcasts.

Do this to Protect Your Financial Future

The state of the American economy is on our minds. We have children, mortgages, debt, tuition, student loans, and other financial responsibilities to oversee. For many, there is overwhelming concern about how to reach financial goals.

In 2022, women earned 82 cents for every dollar earned by men. It is 2024, and the needle has barely moved toward equality. A Northwestern Mutual Study showed that women do not feel secure and confident about retirement compared to men. We can no longer take the figure-it-out-as-we-go, approach. The best way to prepare is to take charge of our finances and build a team of resources to help create a blueprint that protects our future.

I was raised in a Dominican home; where finances were never discussed. Talking about money was perceived as rude or inappropriate. It revealed too much about the family’s business. There are two pieces of advice my mother gave me that stayed with me. First, always to save for a rainy day. The second was to never depend on a man.

I am a divorced, single mom, aware of our burden as head of household. It is challenging to contemplate a financial future while caring for a home and child. We get by the day-to-day, by any means necessary. Regardless of status, securing our family’s future security is a priority,  Having the funds to help sustain ourselves and save for retirement is essential. It is also nice to have some means to enjoy life. If we are confident that we can take care of ourselves in our later years, it can significantly reduce the stress in our lives.

Tomorrow comes sooner than you think. Time sneaks up when you least expect it and taps you on the shoulder to collect its debts. In 2023, I lost my mom. She was a hard-working woman who did what she could with what she had. There wasn’t much time for preparation because she was too busy trying to survive the present. When she departed the world of the living, there was a scramble to get her house in order. Ultimately, one of my siblings had to take on the fiscal responsibilities left behind. Her passing was a rude awakening. Not only was it a painful loss, but it was a reminder of my mortality. It got me contemplating the future and how to make it as simple, as possible for my daughter when my time comes. It may sound morbid but it’s part of the circle of life. This life-changing event forced me to confront reality.

Recently, I decided to sit down with a trusted professional to discuss a plan for my financial future. Choosing a professional to help me with this important task has been one of my biggest decisions as an adult. It can be an intimidating conversation but preparation is one of the keys to success. Are you considering the plunge? These steps can help before scheduling a meeting.

What are your goals? Are you looking to build wealth, be financially independent, retire, purchase property, or start a business? Whatever, you are planning, work to understand where you are with your finances before setting any of your goals. What are your real numbers? Denial can be a powerful ally but has the potential to create havoc in our lives. When we use the mechanism in our financial lives, it is detrimental to our economic growth. Be honest with yourself about debt, necessities, indulgences, and income. If you are not truthful with yourself then you won’t be honest with the expert you hire to help you through this process. It was hard to open my financial books to a stranger. However, it was necessary to design a plan that was realistic. as well as, efficient.Set the plan in motion. Don’t seek financial planning advice, until you’re serious about your future. They can put a plan in place for you but it won’t work until you do your part.Go over your plan regularly with your financial advisor. Life changes, as do circumstances. Your finances can change, too. The expectation is that a financial plan will require tweaks, over time.

Tip: If you are looking for an experienced professional, do your research or ask a friend for a recommendation. This is your life and like any relationship, you should find someone who understands you, and your goals and is looking out for your best interest.

I’ve had a great experience with the Financial Advisor I chose to work with me. He listens to my needs and understands my priorities. I am learning to live my best life while looking to the future with a more positive outlook. I know there is a long road ahead, however, I work on improving more each day.

Empowerment Series: Actress from Apple TV+ Sugar, Peacock’s Apples Never Fall, and Showtime’s L Word: Generation Q, Paula Andrea Placido Shares her Authentic Self with AW

Paula Andrea Placido was born in the Dominican Republic. Her father is Argentine-Italian and her mother is Colombian. The multicultural Latina lived in Palm Beach, FL until the age of 18, when she moved to Los Angeles, CA. The initial decision to make the change was scary but her bold moves are paying off. The actress is building an impressive portfolio of work that includes roles in L-Word: Gen Q, Sugar, Hacks, Shameless, and The Resident. Currently, she plays Gina Solis in Peacock’s Apples Never Fall.

AW sat down with the actress for a friendly conversation about the show, her character, working with the talented cast, moving to Los Angeles, living your truth, and on the other side of fear. This interview was such a treat! Listen or watch, as we get into some real, unfiltered conversations!

This cast and ensemble are amazingly talented. Annette Bening, Sam Neill, Jake Lacey, Alison Brie, Connor Merrigan-Turner and many others. What was it like to be part of this incredible cast?

When I first found out that I booked it, I began seeing the articles of Annette Bening, Sam Neill, then Jake and Allison. As the cast was rounded out, I was mind-blown because I was getting a chance to work with these people. I got to go to Australia for four months, learning and absorbing as much as possible from them. I love what I do. It was incredible and one of the best experiences of my life in many ways. I’ve been jumping into different characters and they had been quick roles, in and out in a couple of weeks but this was a process. I was able to live with Gina for four months which was very cool.

Without giving too much detail about the show, I will share that you find out, your partner is cheating.  In a scene, you also admit to your minor indiscretion. Gina’s character is interesting. She is loving, kind, supportive, and committed but also flawed. Without giving away the end, did you feel that her reaction to Brooke’s cheating was justified or should she have been more compassionate because she wasn’t a saint?

I don’t know how to answer that without just ripping into it. Honestly, I think her reaction was calm, cool, and collected. It was a polite way to go about it. If I was in that situation in my personal life, I may have a similar response. Although, the fiery Latina in me would wanna throw the table and light the place on fire. I feel a lot of my friends would have similar reactions. They would be like, hell no! It is about perspective and boundaries. You know what I mean? My character, Gina makes it clear what her boundaries are, she says “I don’t cross certain lines.”

What would you say, you mostly connected to about this character? In contrast to, let’s say, Roxy’s character on Gen Q L Word. Any similarities?

They are two different people, from two different places in the world. Roxy comes from a privileged background. Her family is wealthy. She is a party girl, who lives life on a whim. Gina is grounded, very centered, and family-oriented. She sees a stable future with Brooke. She has a business, a fiance, a formal engagement, and a home. So, very different people.

Part of me hurts for Gina because she has a simple, calm, and peaceful vision of what she wants from life. The Delaney’s are a tornado with so much family history that has gone unresolved. Some things haven’t been spoken about or dealt with. When she makes her decision, it is ultimately for the best because they both want different things. No matter how picture-perfect it may seem, the two are not connecting due to the lack of communication. Eventually, it goes the way that it’s supposed to.

You’ve played these authentic characters and they seem true to you in some way. And I wonder, have you ever experienced a time when you felt like you were not staying true to yourself?

As an actor, you bring part of yourself into each role and live in the circumstances of the world. I think no matter what, I can try to do that but it wouldn’t feel authentic. I always bring a piece of me into it. I can’t be anyone but me. It’s like different versions. In a way, I play many versions or interpretations of myself.

There have been instances in my life when I have become a chameleon in relationships to make someone else happy. I think plenty of us have done the same in one way or another. Can you think of a time when you’ve had to do that?

The first 10 years of moving to LA were that for me. During the pandemic, I had a moment of realization. It was like my Saturn was returning. I was feeling like I couldn’t do it, anymore. I was unhappy with who I played those last 10 years. I thought, let’s just completely scratch it all. I had to start brand new and rediscover who I was because I was not happy. I wanted to find out who I was on my own. It led to shaving all my hair off, like a rebirth. There were lots of moments to signal out a specific one. The first 10 years of being in LA, during my 20s, I didn’t know who I was. I was trying to please people and fell into this category of being who people wanted me, and it was not authentic.

Our culture impacts the way we live our lives, at least, until we figure ourselves out. Do you think when you weren’t being true to yourself your culture had anything to do with it? I think for me it did.

Yes – 100 % true, especially as a Latina woman. Your hair is everything. I had this idea that if I cut all my hair off, it would be like Samson in the Bible. I felt like I would lose everything. I realized that I needed to lose it to find myself.  It does have a lot to do with my culture. Growing up, I’d hear “Your hair is so beautiful. You have such pretty hair. Stand up straight. Shoulders back. Why aren’t you in dresses?” I was trying to conform to what I thought, I needed to look like through my mom’s eyes. I got to a point where I needed to be content with life. I started to find the things I liked that made me feel good, and brought joy back into my life.

Do you have any sort of just general advice for anyone not living their truth?

It is your life. You get one. This is the life that you were given and you’re the one that has to live in this body. Who cares about anybody else? At the end of the day, they are not the ones living in these shoes. Pause to reflect. Mute the outside voices. Silence everything on the outside. There are plenty of distractions. People will tell you who they think you are or should be. Pausing everyone and doing a complete reset is important, so you can be able to hear your thoughts. Cut out the noise.

You have a powerful quote on your Instagram that I loved. I’ve heard different versions of it. It says “Everything you want is on the other side of fear.” What have you found on the other side of fear in your own life?

To piggyback off of that quote, “The regret of not doing is greater than the act of doing it.” If you don’t do that thing, it will kill you. When I was 18 years old, I was afraid to move to LA alone but I did it – the best decision I made. I was scared to shave my head and I did it, let me know more about myself. If I’m scared to do something, I tend to try, at least, once. I don’t want to live with the regret.  I’ve done many different things. I was scared to get on a motorcycle and I learned to ride, it’s awesome. I was scared of open water, like scuba diving. I took a three-day course, terrifying! I don’t think I’ll do it again, but I did it despite the fear. The pain of the regret is way greater than actually doing the thing.

What kind of advice mantra or quote, can you leave us with that will light a fire under our seat to get out there and do it?

I think it’s that. The regret is so much more painful than the actual, action. I was listening to a podcast where the host said that he got punched in seventh grade and lived with the regret of not fighting back his whole life. He was still angry at himself for not standing up for himself. He explained that he would probably live with that feeling for the rest of his life.

Do it, so you don’t have to beat yourself up, later.  Plenty of people live with “Why didn’t, I take that chance or do this thing? Why didn’t I ever, say hello to the girl?” Now you are living in that regret. Just do it, so you don’t have to beat yourself up about it, down the road.

AW is grateful to Andrea for this beautiful interview! Her energy was amazing. Her inspiring words stayed with me long after our interview.

We spend a lot of time procrastinating, finding reasons not to do something we want, or convincing ourselves that we cannot do that. Let’s try something different today, make a list of five things you want to try but are afraid to do. Tackle one activity or action per quarter and see how far you get by the end of one year. You can give the list to a partner or friend to hold you accountable and encourage you to make an effort. Do it afraid but do it!

Let’s take Paula’s advice and start living before it is too late.
