Empowerment Series: AW Participates in Press Roundtable with Ava DuVernay for New Docuseries ‘Home Sweet Home” on NBC

The name Ava DuVernay is synonymous with . She picked up a camera at the age of 32 and has been making magic, ever since. The Academy-Award nominee has a long list of film and television credits including Selma, When They See Us, 13th, The Wrinkle in Time, and Queen Sugar, just to name a few. This powerhouse is not short on recognition from BAFTA, NAACP, and the Emmys. She has already made history, as the first African American woman to win for Best Director at the Sundance Film Festival. The filmmaker also holds a seat on the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ advisory board. Her list of accomplishments is continuously thriving, like her passion for spreading cultural diversity awareness.

As Executive Producer of NBC’s “Home Sweet Home, Ava Duvernay will bring viewers authentic human experiences that are sure to capture hearts. AW was granted an early screening of the new docuseries. Undoubtedly, this show will plant a seed of empathy in people who take a moment to put themselves in someone else’s shoes. Each week, the unscripted reality show takes two households on a journey of self-discovery. Families are immersed in a social experiment that requires an exchange of identities, race, culture, geography, gender, and economic status.

AW is grateful for its participation in the press roundtable for the series. The hour-long meeting offered an opportunity to listen to the producer share her thoughts and hopes for the project. Questions posed by journalists sparked honest conversations about unconscious bias, assumptions, and the importance of understanding, as well as, respecting our differences. The neutral forum gave way to compassion while discussing the tough subjects. The disparity between us should not put us on opposing sides, instead, encourage learning more about each other.

The tendency to label groups is more common than we may think. Society can be easily influenced by social stereotypes. Sometimes, our beliefs are formed outside conscious awareness making it difficult to shake off “what we think we know” about others. The newspapers we read, the programming watched, our upbringing, the company we keep, the part of the world we live in, all affect how we perceive the world and the people around us. It is our responsibility to acknowledge bias and educate ourselves to ensure that our actions are not based on false judgment.

During the roundtable, she explained that Home Sweet Home was created to offer perspective, and hopefully, bring appreciation for other human beings. Although clear differences exist, there is one thing that binds us, humanity. Everyone puts their pants on one leg at a time, wants to live with dignity and make sure loved ones are safe. The lack of interaction and limitations we set on what outsiders learn about us can lead to segregation. Fear plays a role in our lives, preventing us from coming together. It becomes more and more difficult to bridge the gap that separates us.

On the outside, this docuseries may seem like another swap show but it’s so much more. The families participating want to engage in a learning experience, they bring their curiosity and desire to be part of something good. There are no plot twists or negative components added for dramatic effect. The emotions that may arise are rather internal, as family members deal with their own feelings caused by the unfamiliar.

Eventually, the microphone turned to me. I was so happy to ask the question. My confidence prevailed, then the award-winning filmmaker responded with incredible grace and authenticity.

Question: As executive producer of a series that challenges racial, economic, geographic, gender, and identity assumptions, which I think most of us have. What did you learn during the filming that was surprising or enlightening?

She praised my question then went on to explain the episode with the Mormon family. The realization of her own preconceived notions about who and what Mormons are was surprising. The assumption had always been, Mormons did not like Black people, it is what she knew. Therefore, having a Mormon and Black family have this cultural exchange brought some discomfort. It turned out there were no issues with color, the Mormons truly wanted to learn more about the other family’s experiences.

Ms. Durvernay was able to see them as people, beyond their faith. As it turns out, they had their own reservations about multiple wives, feminist matters, and the history of black and brown people. She would have missed out on this beautiful moment with a lovely family if she would have led with assumption. She realized this was exactly what she wanted the show to do for others.

This series is a celebration of what we have in common. An opportunity to see beyond what we assume we know about other cultures, religions, races, traditions, and people. Let’s take a little time to see these families explore life while standing in someone else’s shoes.

“Leave your shoes at the door and walk in someone else’s.”  Home Sweet Home premieres on Friday, October 15th at 8:00 pm EST on NBC.

Breaking the Silence: The Emotional Revelations Shared on Red Table Talk: The Estefans

Sexual violence is defined as an undesired sexual act. The perpetrator can be a stranger, family member, or intimate partner. Although, victims can be male or female, a significantly higher number of cases involve women. It is extremely important to understand that consummation does not have to take place to be considered a violation. Whether victimized by exposure, touch, or forcible sexual act, these crimes have devastating consequences that severely impact overall well-being of the abused.

Babies are born into the world without judgment or understanding of malicious intent. A child’s natural instinct is to trust those closest to them. Children are raised to respect their elders, the expectation is to “Do as they say.” As young children, we are conditioned to confide in the authority figures in our lives. But, what do you do when someone in the circle of trust abuses their power?

Our ears bleed from ongoing stories of sexual violence at varying degrees. Siblings, friends, public figures are breaking silence by sharing personal experiences of sexual abuse. More and more, women are using various platforms to tell their story. The revelations are encouraging others to also, speak out against sexual violence.

In a recent episode of Red Table Talk: The Estefans, Gloria Estefan shared her story of abuse by a distant relative.  He was a music teacher who used her parent’s trust to prey on the young girl. The abuse started at the age of 9, deadly threats kept the child from taking things public. The situation escalated, impacting her mental and physical health. The damage became apparent when anxiety and stress led to hair loss. Ultimately, she told her mother, who contacted authorities. The police discouraged pressing charges with the explanation that trauma from testifying in front of a jury would be much worse for the child. The regret from not taking action made Gloria feel badly, as she was certain there were others. Later on, she learned that an aunt in Cuba had been abused by the same man, years earlier. During the same episode, former bachelorette, Clare Crawley disclosed details of her sexual abuse at the hands of a Catholic Priest at the age of 5.

Oprah has openly talked about her molestation from the age of 10 to 14, and rape at 9-years old. Tarana Burke’s memoir, Unbound: My Story of Liberation and Birth of the MeToo Movement includes the story of her sexual assault at the age of 7. The victims go on, Lady Gaga, Gabrielle Union, Lena Dunham, and Viola Davis, who admitted that she was a victim, so was her mother, sisters, and childhood friend. The women all experienced some form of sexual violence.

In 2018, the world heard about a gymnastic doctor who was accused of sexual abuse by 265 women. During his trial, more than 150 girls and women provided an account of their exploitation. Gymnasts Simon Biles, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, Maggie Nichols, and others came forward in solidarity. Teammates openly shared their own experience of abuse at the hands of the predator.  The former doctor, Larry Nassar pleaded guilty to seven counts of criminal sexual conduct, his jail sentence will keep him imprisoned until his last breath. In 2021, the women told their stories, again, to the Senate Judiciary Committee in an effort to get accountability from the FBI Agents that poorly mishandled the case. These brave victims are demanding to be seen like never before but will they ever be completely free of the horrors lived at a young age? Victims do not necessarily forget, they learn to live with what happens to them and hopefully, understand the crime was not a result of something they did.

There is also an unknown number of untold stories. Children taken advantage of in households, schools, and places of worship around the world. Victims with average lives but in devastating situations. The faces and names remain anonymous but we know they’re out there suffering without anyone to protect them or believe their stories.

It is estimated that 1 in 6 boys and 1 in 4 girls are victims of sexual abuse or assault. It may not come as a surprise that 82% are females under the age of 18-years old. The shocking truths related to sexual violence do not end there, more than 90% of crimes are committed by a person known to the victim, often family members or a trusted person.

A large number of these deplorable acts are being committed against children who do not have the developmental maturity to comprehend what is happening or the capacity to consent to these acts. Oftentimes, offenders manipulate situations and create an environment where the child may feel complicit in the abuse. Young victims are defenseless against those abusing power and trust.

Sexual violence involving children is a global issue, whether we open our eyes to it or not. These crimes are quietly taking place in plenty of communities without regard to race, religion, culture, or economic status. In some cases, the abuse can last years. Kids are powerless and ashamed with no clue of what to do after being victimized. Countless questions can arise for the victims, as they give in to fear and confusion. Will anyone believe them? Did they play a role in what took place? What will happen if they tell the truth? Can the abuser punish them for talking about the incident? Will their parents act on the abuse? Children become prisoners of this overwhelming burden and internal turmoil.

In order to break generational cycles being perpetuated, we must support victims speak out against their abuser. It is critical to show sufferers, they’re safe from retaliation, judgment, or blame. Compassion should come from a place, where there is no space for culpability. Knowing that what happens to them matters is extremely important, as well. Recognizing the incident can help victims feel less guilty, tainted, or disgraced. The handling of the situation is key to help avoid additional trauma and move forward with the healing process.

Change cannot take place if offenders continue to move in stealth mode through society, preying on the innocent. As parents and caretakers, there are some things we can do to protect our children. Encouraging them to speak freely and openly about anything, remaining involved in their lives are essential to stay connected. Paying attention to behavior, as well as, learning the warning signs for abuse can too, strengthen awareness.

The unfortunate truth is that sexual violence can take place anytime, anywhere. It happened to me during a time when resources and help were not available for myself or my parents. The past cannot be changed but there is still time to make the future better and safer for the next generation of children.

If you are a victim or survivor in need of help, call (800) 656-HOPE or reach out to RAINN.org.

Empowerment Series: Netflix Series “Who Killed Sara” and Telemundo’s “Malverde: El Santo Patron”, Mexican Actress, Carolina Miranda Shares a Gift with AW

In 2018, Carolina Miranda won Best Actress at Los México Awards. It was a sign that she was on her way to a bright future. The talented actress is no stranger to the small screen with hits like Senora Acero and Los Rey. In the Spring of 2021, the stunning beauty became a household name thanks to 55M subscribers. Netflix’s biggest non-English hit, Who Killed Sara, placed Carolina in front of millions of new faces. We are obsessed with the crime thriller and excited to see how it unfolds.

Her newest role as Isabel Aguilar in Malverde: El Santo Patron, Telemundo’s first-period piece is sure to generate even more excitement among her fans. The action-packed telenovela takes place during the early 1900s and is inspired by real-life legend, Jesus Juárez Mazo nicknamed “Malverde.”  The people of the Mexican State, Sinaloa, perceived him as protector of the innocent. The figure, eventually, became a religious idol.  He is referred to as “Angel of the Poor,” allegedly, stealing from the rich to give to the needy. The mega-production recreated a time period, bringing life to this legendary character. This series is an elevated form of storytelling with out-of-the-box imaginative directing that includes solid acting and a touch of history. The series has all the makings of a crowd-pleaser and will appeal to a broad audience.

Recently, I had an opportunity to sit for an interview with Carolina and ask her about Who Killed Sara, as well as, the newest series. We also discussed the significance of the new production. She was charismatic and authentic when delivering responses, making it a delightful conversation! It was an honor and pleasure to speak with the Mexican native during Hispanic Heritage Month. Hopefully, you will watch the full interview with bonus trailer on the AW Confidential YouTube channel to capture the true essence of this engaging conversation.

Congratulations on all your success this year with Who Killed Sara the Mexican whodunnit that became the most popular non-English series on Netflix! In Who Killed Sara you play Elisa Lazcano, a brave, determined woman who sticks to her convictions, no matter the consequences. In your new role, as Isabel Aguilar in Malverde: Santo Patron, you are a good-hearted, smart woman, who is also stubborn. Would you say these characters have similar traits, if so, how? How are they completely different? The characters are different, Elisa Lazcano of “Who Killed Sara” is kind of crazy, not so normal! Malverde’s, Isabel is a very strong and powerful woman. She’s also looking for justice but this is a period piece that is being interpreted. Isabel is always in her home. She loves her son, husband, and father. She is another kind of a woman but very powerful, too. I know the audience will see it.

Malverde: El Santo Patron is a period piece, very different from your Netflix series. This story is based on true events surrounding Jesus Malverde, a hugely controversial bandit from the 1900s who was also a “Man of the people” and protected the innocent. From the costume design to a spectacular 215,000 sq. ft. backlot built in one of Mexico’s national parks. Efforts of the production team were meant to take you back in time. Amazing! It is a very big production of Telemundo, an honor to be part of a period piece. The sets were amazing! It was like being back in history -felt like a movie. I loved the costumes and sets that made you feel you were in another life. We were disconnected with no cell signals to talk to friends or family. You are really disconnected from your world, walking into a piece of history but enjoying it, as much as, you can. We had so much fun while there, disconnected from reality.

Hispanic Heritage Month began on September 15. You have worked on some wonderful Mexican productions with great Latino talent. What does it mean for you to represent your culture and be part of a series that tells the story of a Mexican character? It is very important for me, Malverde is a legend in Mexico. To be the love of Malverde was a high responsibility for me but I enjoyed it. I learned a lot about my own history and Malverde, too. I am Mexican and need to know about my own history.  I’m honored to play this character in the production, interpreting the role of Isabel.

Can you share with us, why you think we should watch Malverde: San Patron? Malverde is a little piece of Mexico on your tv. It is important history about Mexico and this Saint. You will enjoy the action, drama, romance, Malverde, and my character, Isabel Aguilar.

I read that you had to practice your poker face to make sure not to give away the secret of “Who Killed Sara?” Can you share any top-secret plans for a third season? No, I can’t! I have a great poker face but my production team would kill me if I say something bad!! (ha-ha). I am very proud of this project Who Killed Sara, it’s amazing. It’s going to be our third season, we’ll have many surprises for you and the audience. Thank you very much for all the love you give to my character, it’s amazing for me and an honor to play Eliza.

I was unable to get any secrets from the actress regarding the upcoming season of Who Killed Sara but she did leave a gift. Carolina’s pride in representing and learning about her history inspired me to look deeper into my own. In order to preserve our heritage, it’s important to share the stories with generations to come. Our interview was a reminder; the journey to figuring out who we are, starts with understanding the struggles, achievements, and experiences of those that came before us.

This new series is a chance to be part of something bigger, an opportunity for audiences everywhere to see a piece of Mexico’s story. Check out Telemundo’s Malverde: El Santo Patrón, set to premiere on Tuesday, September 28th at 10 pm / 9c.

AW is incredibly grateful to Carolina for lending her time for this interview. We look forward to seeing more of her, very soon!

Empowerment Series: Patricia Robalino Designs, Owner and Creator Shares her Jewels with AW

Women’s love for jewelry is undeniable. We enjoy embellishing looks with fancy jewels. Leveling up our femininity makes us feel beautiful and confident.

My earliest memory of wearing jewelry is an evil eye necklace, I wore as a young girl. My mother had faith in the significance of the amulet, used as a charm to scare of wicked glares from envious people. The history behind the talisman, as a source of protection, originated in Greece but similar beliefs are honored in different cultures. I grew up with an appreciation for these little treasures because of the emotional connection not necessarily, its material value. Of course, as a girl’s girl, I also like using jewelry to compliment my looks at any given time.

The earliest traces of jewelry were found during the prehistoric era. Pendants made of bones, shells, pebbles, and quill were worn to ward off evil. It is believed the handmade pieces had magical powers. Over time, the meaning of jewelry evolved. It became a sign of devotion, affection, even status in modern society. We are obviously wearing plenty of it! The market for jewelry is extremely lucrative. It is estimated that by 2026, this industry will grow to USD 500 Billion in global revenues.

My admiration for anything jewelry made me jump at the opportunity to interview Patricia Robalino. She is the Owner of Patricia Robalino Designs, creator of exquisite jewelry that celebrates women’s femininity and grace. Her passion for jewelry-making began at an early age in Ecuador, as she watched her family create beautiful pieces. The adoration is illustrated in the beauty and delicate quality of her collections. It is no surprise, she has built an incredibly successful business with countless satisfied clients.

Our conversation over Zoom was such a pleasure. Patricia’s demeanor made our interview enjoyable and easy. She was humble, kind, and genuine which made the time with her delightful!

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview for AW! I hear that you knew at the age of 7 that you wanted to design jewelry. In fact, you created your first collection at the age of 19. Impressive! It can take years, sometimes, decades for people to figure out what to do with their lives. Women, in particular, can have a difficult time in this area. We are wives, caretakers, mothers, providers first, which makes it difficult to figure out our passion. How did you know that designing jewelry was for you? The love for making jewelry was passed on early. I would go with my mom to work. I was fascinated with gems and sat with her to choose stones and designs. Participation was key, it helped cultivate my passion for jewelry design.

You have been designing jewelry for 27 years. Your designs have been seen on the red carpet and on some of the best-dressed women in New York and Palm Beach. You have elevated your business to international success. Congratulations! Your journey has been long. People often see the success but don’t truly appreciate the sacrifices it took to get there. What has been your greatest lesson as a female entrepreneur? There have been so many lessons and we never finish learning, each one is harder than the next. I have memories of frequent travel to visit various houses in Europe. I was looking for opportunities to show my work. Clients overlooked me, as the designer in the room. At the age of 29, I’d be asked, “Who did you come with?” without knowing I was the designer! This did not discourage me, I would not give up. The biggest lesson to pass on – never give up, keep knocking on doors! Doors will close all the time but one day, you will find a door open to what you are looking for!

You have shaped your brand by giving it a strong feminine identity. You’ve also maintained a strong sense of your South American upbringing, I have seen some of your collection. It is elegant, graceful, colorful, and creative, really beautiful pieces! If I asked you, who is Patricia Robalino – The Woman. What three words would you use to describe her and why? Honest, loyal, perseverant! I believe in staying truthful and loyal, everything you put out into the world, comes back to you. Loyalty may not sound realistic but it is incredibly loyal to husband, friends, and employees – it is everything!

Sometimes, we look back at our lives and wonder “What if”? If you could do one thing differently in your personal journey what would it be? I have always been very dedicated to my work. Early in my career, I spent endless hours at work, dusk to dawn. If I could change something, I would spend more time with my mom, brothers, family.

I like to end AW interviews with a positive message. What advice can you offer female entrepreneurs seeking longevity and success in their business? It is very important for women to always be self-sufficient and be able to stand on their own two feet. Understanding the value of having your own opinion, acknowledging self-worth is also, critical. Be your own woman.

AW is thankful to Patricia for gifting us with a piece of her journey. She has made incredible achievements in 27 years of business, none of which has tainted her modesty. It’s wonderful to see Latinas conquer territory in industries where opportunities were not available decades ago. Sometimes, it’s tough to see ourselves in certain roles, industries, or positions because we don’t see people that look like us doing the work. It’s essential to share stories of empowered Latinas breaking barriers to show future generations, what is possible. I hope her story will be as inspirational for you, as it was for me.

The jewel of this interview has been connecting with the talented creative on a level, I believe many of us can, as women. We have the power to build the life we envision but we must be willing to continue knocking on doors! I encourage you to begin your own expedition to discover the jewels in your life!

AW has enjoyed sharing some videos of the interview series. Visit AW Confidential’s YouTube channel to check the full interview conducted in Spanish.

SPECIAL FEATURE: AW Celebrates Women’s Fashion at NYFW with New York, Latino Fashion Designer, Raul Peñaranda

We enter a romantic interlude when encountering, the garment that makes us feel like a queen. The perfect dress or ensemble has the power to transform the woman wearing it. Selecting the right dress, down to the fabric, color, style, and fit produces many feelings. Joy, admiration, appreciation, excitement, awe, nostalgia, and anxiety are some of the emotions that can arise when putting on a dress.  Have you ever looked at the facial expressions of a young girl, as she tries on a Sweet 16 gown or a woman who puts on a luxurious evening gown or wedding dress? Connections are made to a person, place, or moment. It will be a garment weaved into a collection of lifetime memories.

The first time I experienced such a sentiment happened during prom season. My parent’s modest earnings made it challenging to buy a lavish dress for the high school dance. The best option was to purchase a pattern, fabric and have it sewn from scratch. Luckily, my mother’s cousin was a seamstress and couldn’t be more excited to help with the project. I remember every detail of the black, sweetheart strapless, lace overlay dress but what I remember most is the way I felt, wearing it.

New York Fashion Week (NYFW) begins September 8th. The highly popular, fashion extravaganza was born as Press Week in 1943. The turmoil of WWII thwarted our country’s fashion media from visiting Paris for the big shows. As a result, Americans saw an opportunity, they rolled out the red carpet all over New York City for these events. Every year in February and September, brands, “houses” and designers unveil their newest collections. The trendy industry shows are drenched in glamour and glitz, as fashion designers share their vision with the media, buyers, and fashionistas of the world.

This year, many eyes will be on Colombian-Venezuelan, Fashion Designer, Raul Peñaranda. The talented creator has been featured in WWD, Vogue, CNN, Forbes, People en Espanol, FOX, New York Post,  NBC, Popsugar, and LA Times. Most recently, he took his brand to new heights by partnering with former Calvin Klein, Tom Murry, as CEO of Raul Penaranda LLC. Raul is a force of creativity who is making an impact with his designs and kindness.

In honor of NYFW 2021, AW brings a special feature with the gifted designer. During our Zoom interview, we discuss his inspiration, upbringing, sage mother, collaboration with Swarovski, and upcoming REVIVE presentation. It was an absolute delight to chat with the energetic Latino. He was friendly, warm, with positive energy that radiated the screen. I have no doubt readers will enjoy this beautiful interview!

A couple of years after Mercedes-Benz  Fashion Week, Forbes named you “One of the fastest-growing entrepreneurs to come out of the small business industry.” More recently, Vogue-Mexico named you “The New King of NYFW.” Despite all the recognition, you seem to have your feet planted firmly on the ground, remaining humble and grateful. Your mother did a fabulous job with you. When you think back to your upbringing, career, and the man you are becoming. How has your mother influenced you? This is a woman’s platform, women are important – mothers are important, so we want to hear all about mom.  I’m thankful for my culture, roots, humble beginnings because when you don’t lose the prospect of where you come from, you can reach for the stars – that’s the beauty that people can see.  I was lucky to learn from the master, Oscar de la Renta.  He was that guy that when I worked for him, he was powerful but kind, luxury with softness and I feel like the luckiest designer in the world for all of it.

My mom is basically everything I am, as a human being and designer. She shaped me into who I am, as a man and shaped the values that I want to share with the rest of the world. She is the person who taught me from a young age, two important things – you can be anything you want in the world. You can achieve greatness as long as you keep humbleness, sensibility, and compassion right there next to you. My mom is a driver in my life. She was a seamstress which is where I got the idea to empower women through clothes.

You are into your 22nd collection, designing for women. Your designs are elegant, sophisticated, sometimes, whimsical. Simply stunning!  In an interview, you referred to yourself as a storyteller instead of a designer. Can you share why you refer to yourself as a storyteller” and what is the best or favorite story from your entire collection?  You have the keywords, whimsical, seductive without being trashy, and elegant without being old. I will never forget to put that Latin touch in a way that is subtle, yet powerful, that is what makes our brand completely different from the others.

The best story is the story that has vulnerability and little mistakes. I can create magnificent pieces but behind that perfection, there is a human being with fears, and nervousness when showing a collection to over a thousand people in the media, editors. The story does not have a specific way of being said but it has the emotion. An emotion of confidence, and the human aspect is always part of it, too. In my career, this resonates with everyone, I make mistakes every day. I want to make sure that in my life “My best t-shirt was my last mistake.” The collection will be the best that I can do, knowing I am also a human being.

I participated in one of our recent Instagram LIVE interviews and noticed, you have many awesome mom stories. What is the best advice she has given you that has served in your personal and professional life?  My dad was the disciplinarian, my mom, the foundation and energy at home. She always told me “You always have the choice to answer based on love or answer based on fear, it is up to you. Nobody will make you feel bad without your consent.”  For example, someone may say, “Your skin color is too dark to be in fashion week.” If I act based on fear,  I will be mad at the statement but if I act based on love, then the person doesn’t know me, I will show with action what I’m trying to do.

September 15 to October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. Congratulations on your collaboration with Swarovski! You are the third Latino outside of Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera in 100 years to have this opportunity. An upcoming presentation at NYFW will be an all Latino production, models, makeup artists, hairstylists, producers. Amazing! You are making an impact in the fashion world. You already have made such a difference, what would you like your legacy to be? I am humbled to follow the steps of pioneers such as Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta. In the beginning, I’d ask everyone to give me a chance, a second of their attention. The moment I started focusing on the dress, print, and fabric, let the dresses speak for themselves, that’s when I got the attention when I wasn’t looking for it. Swarovski is a symbol of refinement, they asked for this collaboration. I want to take the opportunity not only to show my work which comes from my heart. I want to demonstrate that everything that comes from the RP world has Latin DNA.

We had many jewelry companies looking to collaborate on the show. I chose to go with Patricia Robalino from Palm Beach, she brings exquisite jewelry. We also have Paula and Oscar from Colombia doing the look book and production. Nails by Luis from Colombia. The main model is from Puerto Rico, Priscilla Huggins, who is doing a campaign for Guess, and our casting director is from Panama. It is a great opportunity to show the world that we, Latinos are passionate and can be at the same level as the big guys in Europe.

Your designs demonstrate such an appreciation for femininity. Where do you find your inspiration? It is about the personal emotion that I’m going through in my life at that moment, as a human being. The emotion can be happiness or sorrow. I want to celebrate either of those emotions. When I grab the pen and paper, drape a piece of chiffon, somehow those emotions give me the tools to create a collection. This collection coming up is called REVIVE because after we went through the pandemic, I think that we have to become a better version of ourselves in order to exist.

AW likes to end interviews with a positive message. What advice can you give the younger generation hoping to break into the world of fashion based on what you have experienced? My life and my story are the same stories you are having, right now. Today, I am a testament that with dedication, humility, and resilience, everything is possible. Nothing is impossible and miracles take a little longer. Be different, make mistakes but learn from them. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t and the world can be yours!

AW looks for stories to inspire, empower and encourage women. This special edition with Raul Peñaranda was chosen to celebrate women’s fashion, as well as, showcase a designer that appreciates a woman’s elegance, femininity, and power. His mother gave him wings to fly when she empowered him to believe in himself, remain true to who he is, and go for his dreams. He is setting a high bar, another example of how we can accomplish what we set out to do by putting in the work and trusting the mission that aligns with our truth.

It is important to highlight the men that show up for women. Raul is an example of someone who respects and appreciates the influence of women in the world.

AW is extremely honored and grateful to Raul for lending his time to share his story with AW! I hope you watch our interview in its entirety on AW Confidential’s YouTube channel, so many great moments that can only be appreciated by watching the episode.

Empowerment Series: The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Daytime Emmy-Winning Actress, and Author, Eileen Davidson Shares “Beyond Salem” with AW

If you are a fan of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (RHOBH), Days of Our Lives, The Young and The Restless, Santa Barbara, or The Bold and The Beautiful then you are familiar with Eileen Davidson. She is part of the royal court in daytime soaps. The two-time Emmy winner is a favorite for her role as Kristen DiMera in Days of Our Lives. Fans who wanted to loathe the tragic character, instead found themselves sucked in by her schemes. She portrayed a baddie who wanted to be good but somehow, always ended up drenched in venomous behavior.

As a cast member of the reality show, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, audiences got a peek into who the woman is outside her television character. I was elated to receive news of an opportunity to interview Eileen for this series. Her energy came through in a positive, friendly, and genuine way, as she shared her stories during our phone call. Sometimes, the challenge of these interviews is to grasp the essence of the person and their thoughts then translate in a way that gives the readers a true visualization of the exchange that took place during the conversation. She made it an easy exercise by being herself and making me feel comfortable during the process. I’m sure you will find this interview, as entertaining as I did!

You have an impressive history in daytime soaps but countless fans, love you best as Kristen DiMera and Susan Banks on Days of Our Lives. Kristen DiMera’s character is strong, unapologetic, calculating, and intense. She is the villain we want to hate but can’t because we connect with her vulnerability. The fictional character is a broken woman who loses everything she cares about in life. I believe we are all broken in some way, probably not to the degree as this character but everyone has “stuff” to work through in life. As women, we often silence ourselves to make others happy, or comfortable.  Ultimately, internalizing things can inflict pain on the inner self, there’s potential to lose our identity, self-worth, and courage to go after the things we most. Have you experienced a time in your life when you felt broken or vulnerable? Kristen tries to do the right thing, she feels like she lost something which makes her feel extremely vulnerable. There was a time in my life when I was faced with making some major decisions, difficult choices. It was a scary and lonely place, I felt “lost at sea” with no direction. Yes, I have experienced the same. I think we have all been in that space at one point or another but we can power through it.

I try to walk on the positive side of life and spread inspiration through my writing, actions, and in everything I do. In a past interview, you talked about the importance of being human. We have to take ownership of our mistakes, none of us are perfect and that’s okay. As a cast member of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, you carried yourself with grace and kindness, two great qualities! Working alongside a group of strong women probably has its ups and downs. What did being on the show teach you about female friendships? It’s complicated because the show takes place in a heightened setting. This is not an easy gig. Life in front of the cameras is not the healthiest way to form friendships but we do have a real sisterhood. We have shared experiences on the show that connects us. We all feel a bond, I still talk to other housewives – Kyle, and Erika, and Lisa. I learned a lot from being on the show, for example, what drives people. Also, I learned about myself, like what I’m willing and not willing to do.

You have done daytime soaps, a reality show, written several books and you are a mom! It is challenging to juggle everything in our lives and make the right calls each time. You have talked about the importance of listening to your intuition and trusting yourself. I live by the same rule, of course, I did not get there without some serious growing pains. Can you tell us about a time during your journey that forced you to question whether or not you were on the right path? How did you resolve the ambivalence of that moment? I have asked myself that question at different times. Everyone at some point has questioned what’s next. “Where am I going? I’ve been blessed, I trust my instincts which have been useful in various situations.

I was right out of a breakup, had left The Young and The Restless, it seemed like I wasn’t really doing the right things.  There was so much I was supposed to be doing but felt paralyzed by what “they” (everyone else) were thinking. The outside world’s judgment, opinions, or say on my life was affecting me. My wake-up call came like a bat over the head after attending one of Marianne Williamson’s talks. She said some words that stuck with me “This town is full of people waiting to be stars, instead of starring in their own lives.” Listening to her talk changed my life, it was a big moment of self-reflection helping me figure out how I wanted to live my life from that point on.

The news is out! You have joined the cast of DAYS OF OUR LIVES for a limited series, BEYOND SALEM which begins streaming, September 6 on Peacock. Can you share with us a little about what fans can expect to see, as far as, your character – Susan or Kristen? Give us something to get excited about! I can tell you it will be jam-packed with fun and surprises! It is a romp, and it’s so different! Excited to be part of “Beyond Salem” and have it seen on a streaming platform like NBC’s Peacock is amazing! It’s also been nice to work with Lisa Rinna, I got to see her on the set!

AW likes to end interviews on a positive note. We are living in a time of uncertainty, millions of people are in some type of transition. Change makes most of us uncomfortable, a fear of the unknown is difficult to manage. You have navigated many changes throughout your own life. Can you provide a message, mantra, advice, or quote to encourage readers during this time of unpredictability? It’s hard enough building yourself up but you have to, in order to support those that need you. Times are tough, things are weird right now on all levels. There is a lot of turmoil in the world. The one thing I know is constant in this life is change. It can be frightening and crazy but you must choose to evolve.  We have to be able to morph – change is inevitable, get used to it. It is hard but also the place where you will thrive and flourish most!

Every woman taking part in this series has left readers and me with a gift. AW is grateful to Eileen Davidson for sharing a piece of herself with us. The actress delivered her thoughts in an honest and relatable tone. Our conversation helped to remind me of something truly valuable. We can come from different backgrounds, cultures, ages, financial statuses, and places in the world but in the end – we are all human.  As women, much of what we experience consists of similar emotions and circumstances.  Believing that we can learn from one another is the reason I’m inspired each day to continue writing these stories.

I hope our interview sparks inspiration in your life to accept the challenges, embrace change, and lead with your inner voice.

Tune in to Peacock on September 6 to see Eileen Davidson in Days of Our Lives: BEYOND SALEM. New episodes will drop daily culminating with the limited series finale on Friday, September 10.

Empowerment Series: NJ Miss For America Strong and New Jersey Pageant Co-Director, Ilsy J Hoo Shares her Beauty with AW

Today’s pop culture is filled with competitive television. America is captivated by contestants that sing, dance, model, design, sell, transform, fall in love or do anything that can furnish a prize. Fascination keeps audiences at the edge of their seats while rooting for a favorite competitor. Growing up, I recall, sitting in front of a television with my mother to watch beauty pageants. We were filled with admiration while women strutted their elegance across the stages of Ms. America and Ms. Universe. The only thing bigger than the glam was the anticipation of who would be crowned queen of the night.

Decades filled with beauty competitions whose scoring system was based on categories such as evening gowns and bathing suits are deemed superficial according to modern-day standards. This perspective has caused these types of events to lose some of their popularity, especially, as we lean into substance rather than aesthetics. Times are changing and with it, pageants have taken a different place in society, as women are being encouraged to embrace who they are instead of fitting a mold. These optics paint a picture that makes beauty contests a tough sell but this interview may inspire a conflicting outlook.

One of my responsibilities, as a writer, is to share views that challenge the status quo. I believe learning to keep an open mind about the world around us helps us to understand others better. The subject of pageants is of particular interest, although it can be portrayed by some as exploitative, others perceive it as empowering, using it as a springboard to advance in life or career. The contrast has been worth exploring, and interviewing NJ Miss For America Strong and New Jersey Pageant Co-Director, Ilsy Hoo offered a wonderful opportunity to spotlight the positive things that can come out of being part of such events.

Pageants are primarily perceived to be a display of a glorified aesthetic beauty. I believe there are different ways for women to take charge of their feminine power. However, some will argue that contestants flaunting their physical attributes in a swimsuit and evening gown has nothing to do with empowerment. You have held the title of Miss NJ for America. How did winning the competition empower you, as a woman? I believe that pageants encourage contestants to build self-confidence, individual pride, and greater self-awareness. The Mrs. America organization has done a fantastic job of having diversity and celebrating all women from different walks of life. Although we keep the traditions of swimsuit and evening gown competitions, we encourage the contestants to also focus on causes or issues they feel strongly about and to become involved in organizations that speak closely to their hearts. Although I am a naturally confident woman, being Miss NJ for America Strong has given me so many opportunities to connect with people in my community that have the same values to bring hope, light, and justice to the community.

Women are held to unrealistic standards of beauty in our society. The expectation has been to stay forever young but we are slowly pushing away from the demands placed on us. There is newfound freedom in owning who you are at any age. What would you say to women who may be feeling the pressure of playing the perfect beauty queen in their own lives? I say, own who you are and be proud of aging. I’ve met so many women in various age ranges who competed in pageants and WON a state title. I look up to them because not only do they represent their generation, they are full of wisdom and experience. There’s no such thing as being perfect therefore being a perfect beauty queen doesn’t exist. Don’t put that type of pressure on yourself and celebrate the woman you’ve become.

Beauty pageants have been around since the 1920s, gaining significant exposure and sponsorships over the years. What insight can you offer audiences, regarding any positive aspects of these types of pageants? It’s all about how we are going to make an impact in the world and who you can connect with that can join you. My mission with the New Jersey America pageant is to build strong relationships with NJ businesses and national brands that will support women who are doing great things.

Chimere Nicole Haskins, Mrs. New Jersey America has used her title to mentor young women and encourage them to challenge the status quo and think of innovative ways to better their lives. She’s volunteered to help feed 1500 families at the Soup Kitchen and Rise in the Trenton area and attend various community events that help the greater good.

Kristina Henderson, Mrs. New Jersey American, has used her reign to empower other women in business to take their existing companies to the next level. She’s also held a red-carpet event in Red Bank, NJ, honoring “Stars of Women In Business” in New Jersey. During the pandemic along with her husband, they donated over 125,000 masks to frontline workers and families in need through collaboration with Feeding America. I hope we can continue to bring positive exposure to those who are looking to collaborate with the New Jersey pageant system.

How have you been inspired by your journey as Miss NJ for America? How will you continue to spread inspiration among women? I’ve watched so many of my sash sisters across the U.S. do extraordinary things for their cause and communities. I think about what I can do today to create winning habits and how that can impact the community. During my reign, my efforts were to raise more awareness about domestic violence. I partnered with VictimsVoice to help people in unhealthy relationships document the right information to get protection, seek legal justice and help prosecutors hold abusers accountable. As a board member, I will continue to look for ways to help our communities outside New Jersey and raise awareness about VictimsVoice. As the new New Jersey Pageant Director, I will inspire the new delegates and state titleholders to keep pushing towards what you truly believe in. Never give up. Inspire others to give back. Be an inspiration to others because you never know who you may help and inspire along the way.

AW is grateful to have been given a chance to tell a different story about how pageants can promote positive outcomes. Women like Ilsy Hoo are an example of what can be accomplished when the mission is clear. The win gave her a larger forum to bring awareness to important issues affecting women everywhere.

The road to empowerment is not the same for all women. We make individual contributions to the world in our own way. Using activism, philanthropy, volunteer work, careers in the medical and social service field, becoming an ally to the community can get results but there are limitless possibilities to bring change. These competitions are a means to an end, giving women a platform to catapult them to the next big opportunity. The days of the 1970s pageants are long gone because women are thinking bigger. The crown serves as a small step before the big leap into the shoes of the woman they are truly meant to become.

AW is about empowering and supporting women while they are on the journey to becoming their best selves. The decision to participate as a sponsor to the New Jersey America Pageant was made easy, once I learned about all the great things contestants are doing to help shed light on causes such as poverty, domestic violence, and lack of resources in disadvantaged communities. In a world where there is plenty of negativity to go around, it was refreshing to find the real beauty of a queen. I took a moment to look deeper and read into the goodwill and hope for a better tomorrow.

Empowerment Series: Telemundo’s “Cafe con Aroma de Mujer” and Netflix “Narcos,” Colombian Actress, Laura Londoño Shares her Energy with AW

Laura Londoño is no stranger to audiences in the United States and across international waters. She has appeared in popular, Spanish language telenovelas such as Sin Cenos No Hay Paraiso and La Ley de Corazon. The Colombian beauty was also seen in the third season of the Netflix hit series, Narcos.  Most recently, we can enjoy her talents in the modern version of Cafe con Aroma de Mujer on Telemundo. It is the story of impossible love between soulmates that long to be together but social class and jealousy get in the way of happiness.

I have been following the drama series and honestly, I’m hooked! The couple’s chemistry along with watching its devious characters create hurdles for the star-crossed lovers is intoxicating, you can’t help but root for the leads. In addition, the telenovela offers a glimpse into situations that reflect some of the problems resulting from disparities between classes. For example, immigrants struggle to advance, farmworkers’ financial illiteracy, and social discrimination. The storylines also touch on other real-life topics such as the dangers of internet dating, and the resistance to homosexuality in the Latinx culture.

AW had the wonderful opportunity to sit with Laura for a delightful chat! She brought her contagious enthusiasm while we talked about love, authenticity, and her role as Gaviota. The proud mom and husband recently announced they are expecting, again. We took a brief moment to discuss the impact of motherhood, the second time around. It was great to connect and share thoughts on the rewards and challenges encountered by women while juggling everything in their lives. My likeness for Laura skyrocketed, as she unravels the woman behind her character in Cafe con Aroma de Mujer.  She is incredibly enchanting and you’re in for a treat with this interview!

Your character in Cafe con Aroma de Mujer is a woman who is full of life, courage, passion, and pride – all honorable qualities in a woman. However, as human beings, we all have faults. In your opinion, what is your character’s greatest flaw, which she also uses as a strength to overcome some of the challenges faced throughout her journey on the series? Pride!! She is a woman who does not feel less or more important than anyone else. She is genuine in nature, of strong character, and true to herself, all great qualities. Gaviota is also incredibly proud, and this moral high ground works as a double-edged sword when she finds herself at the extreme end of this dignified position to the point of getting in her own way. During this journey, forgiveness becomes a battle for her, as stubbornness takes over which can leave some viewers to disagree with the character’s decisions.

You play a strong, yet, slightly naive woman among other more worldly female characters in the ensemble. Our culture carries some old-world views that support the oppression of women in most of today’s Latinx societies. What has been your biggest lesson or awakening, as a Latina coming from a Colombian background? The mix of qualities possessed by Gaviota is special, her character is a brave and determined woman. If there is something she does not like, she has no problem expressing it but she is also very sweet with an air of innocence that is endearing. The theme of innocence is an important one, naivety does not equate to being dumb, this is a misconception.

Personally, I have been trying to regain my own simplicity, although life experience and challenges take some of it, I’d like to reconnect with that part of me. I appreciate sincerity and don’t think anyone should lose their essence for any reason. If your nature is to trust, go with it, if someone abuses it then it is their problem, not yours. It’s is critical to stay true to ourselves.

This telenovela touches on intimate subjects that years ago were taboo on Spanish television. The series covers storylines that shed light on discrimination, sexuality, and other strong subject matter. How did you feel about being part of a series that does not shy away from difficult or controversial topics? I loved it! Although I’m not a controversial person or irreverent, I do question everything. I ask myself – Who am I? Why do I do the things, I do? Where do my actions stem from? How can I transform into a better person? How do I gain more consciousness about the world around me? Some like this way about me, while others don’t but I am naturally inquisitive. As actors, we have a voice. Many people are listening, watching, and paying attention to everything we say and do. As such, it’s essential to lend our voices to the things that matter – individuals, animals, or anything without representation. For example, I have a brand of sexual well-being. This is generally a topic that is not openly spoken about because it can be embarrassing, shameful, and tends to make us blush. No one really wants to discuss these matters but I like being able to do what I’m doing, inform!

The love between the lead characters, Gaviota and Sebastian, appears as love at first sight. Do you believe in love at first sight and have you experienced something similar? The moment that Gaviota meets Cupid’s bow and arrow, she feels the butterflies! But in the middle of being immersed in the emotion, she has a moment of clarity which is demonstrated in a beautiful dialogue she has with her on-screen mother. If love is powerful, scandalous, feverish, electrifying then yes, she is in love but from there to being in love, in love is a long road.

I believe there is a process you go through when you move from the initial impact of this emotion to stages of lasting love. I’m not sure, one can see someone and instantly “fall in love!” I haven’t experienced love in that manner, therefore, not familiar with it but for me, there are steps before the intensity sets in. Love evolves over time, it requires nurturing, understanding, and trust to develop. This is how I have experienced it, in my own life.

AW likes to end interviews with a positive, inspiring, or empowering message for readers. What message can you offer to get us excited about watching “Cafe con Aroma de Mujer?” This series offers an opportunity for all women to get inspired by the possibilities. The female characters working in these fields function as teams, they spend their days picking coffee beans and carrying heavy bags without complaint. Unafraid of the labor, the group of women supports one another any way they can, working side-by-side to ensure the job is completed daily. It is something that we can incorporate in our own lives, the idea that everyone has the capacity to be unstoppable, especially if we stand together. Women can build a squad, create a collaborative environment that encourages our progress everywhere.

Gaviota’s story, although fictional, has aspects that resonate with a fair share of us. By day, a coffee farmworker earning her keep to survive poverty in Colombia. Nightfall takes her to a local bar where she entertains audiences, as a singer, without fear of how she will be perceived by others. She is earnest, hardworking, and thrives in the simplicity of life, finding strength in who she is as a human being. A combination of tenacity and eagerness to learn sets the foundation for her to become a boss on her own terms. She is unafraid to lead and empower others in the community, encouraging them to aspire for greatness. The character does so while maintaining a stronghold on morals, refusing to compromise her truths in exchange for any measure of success.

In a world, where we are constantly bargaining for things, this character is breath of fresh air. Viewers are given the opportunity to see the world through the eyes of a dreamer.  We are born into an environment without a choice but it is what we do after we’re here that makes the difference in our lives and of those around us. Cafe con Aroma de Mujer is more than an idyllic or cheesy telenovela. It is the story of a woman with conviction, who stands by her values, is guided by self-respect, honesty, and self-worth. She lives with a relentless will to live her best life, something so many of us yearns to do.

Laura Londoño is an empowered woman! The Co-Founder of Almost Virgin understands the significance of women’s wellness in our culture. Her transparent and honest disposition about the different issues we encounter shows a level of consciousness and compassion that serves as a magnet to those that come in contact with her. I appreciate the work she is doing to spread inspiration and knowledge. It is essential for each of us to contribute in our own way to promote the growth and development of our gender.

AW is filled with gratitude to Laura and the team at H+M Communications and Telemundo for being incredibly generous with time and access. Her lovely demeanor allowed for an enjoyable and genuine conversation that resulted in this beautiful interview. I invite you to visit the AW Confidential YouTube channel for the playback of our interview with some bonus moments!

Cafe con Aroma de Mujer can be seen weeknights at 10:00 pm EST on Telemundo.

¿De qué te has perdonado?

AW Summer Reading List to Inspire Self-Exploration

What was the last book you read and more importantly, how did it make you feel? Books are one of the major inspirations in my life. The idea of getting lost in a story or awakened by a fresh perspective is exactly what I need at times.

Summer is a great time to pick up a recommended book, re-read a classic, and find inspiration with a new author. Whether you are enjoying the sandy beaches, green mountains, red canyons, or another safe haven of choice, readers can feel less lonely with a book in hand. Is it the comfort of words that keeps us afloat or the regained outlook from a higher being? Luckily, there is a book for everyone with a unique message that resonates. In 2020, the book industry’s revenue numbers were in the several billion which is a sign that we’re still reading!

The process of choosing the right book is different for everyone. Some pick books depending on what is needed at the time, while others have specific interests. My preference has much to do with what fills my soul during life’s challenges or the truth I seek at that moment. If you are looking for inspiration during your journey of self-discovery this season, here are a few recommendations that may encourage you as you pave the way to greatness.

More Myself: A Journey, New York native, Alicia Keys shares the story of how embracing life’s truths helped her become a better person. I immersed myself in the memoir, while she openly shared her experiences as a woman, daughter, friend, wife, and artist. Most of us have individual insecurities, personal trauma, and our own “stuff” but if we listen to our inner voice, it can awaken us to the beauty of self-worth.
What I Know For Sure, Oprah Winfrey offers readers a peek into her life, as well as, provides insightful and sage lessons to empower readers.
The Soul of a Woman, Chilean writer, Isabel Allende walks readers through her journey by sharing her life and choices – even the bad ones that fuel the vehicle of empowerment she continues to be today.
The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz’s book has sold 10 million copies, translated into 46 languages, and had a spot on New York Times Bestseller for over a decade. The book shares a code of conduct to help transform your life.
The Gifts of Imperfection, Brenee Brown discusses authenticity and worthiness. This book is a gift that every woman should read!
You Are a Badass, Jen Sincero has a no-nonsense, unfiltered way of shaking up your soul. She gives us a shot at real life and tells us how to change our lives by letting go of self-sabotaging beliefs and behaviors.
Eat, Pray, Love, Elizabeth Gilbert writes about a woman’s spiritual quest for forgiveness, self-love, joy, and pleasure.

The world of books is a feast for readers looking to be educated, enlightened, inspired, and entertained. Millions of books are published each year, as more writers take advantage of self-publishing. There is a book for every bookworm, a wonderful outlet for anyone who wants it.

There is an undeniably large number of benefits tied to reading such as improved memory, focus, vocabulary, and language development. Reading has been a beautiful and necessary resource to me, as a writer. My craft is constantly improving because of the different authors and genres ventured into throughout the years. My daughter eats up book after book, periodically, taking on two at a time.

I am a big believer that reading allows our mind to expand and broadens horizons, exposing us to a variety of ideas. Human beings’ curiosity about people, life, and the world is fed by experience but can also be satisfied through the universe of books.

Hopefully, you will include a good read as part of your summer self-care plan to inspire, empower, or encourage you to live your best life!
