Do I know you? Heart and Soul #8sunday #snippetsunday #HeartandSoul

Setup for this snippet: WIP from Heart and Soul. This is a snippet from my new 'rock star romance' that I'm working on. It's in the very early stages. This is still Chapter One. Last week, we met George Herman, who frequents the coffeehouse daily. He just paid for his bill.
***
"I'll see you tomorrow," George said as he turned and headed for the door.

"He's gotta be the saddest man alive," Katie said as she placed a tray down on the bar.
Maverick glanced at her with a frown but before he could ask her what she meant, his attention was drawn to the door where George was holding it open for a young woman.
"They're closing," George told her.
"I know but I just need a moment with the owner."
"It's all right, George," he called to him, "we're not closed yet."
George nodded and made his way outside once the woman had crossed the threshold. As she drew closer, Maverick took in her features all at once – dark straight hair, smooth peach skin, dark lashes and rosy lips meant for kissing. She wasn't a local and yet there was something oddly familiar about her but he couldn't put his finger on it.

Coffee to go- Heart and Soul #8sunday #snippetsunday #HeartandSoul

Setup for this snippet: WIP from Heart and Soul. This is a snippet from my new 'rock star romance' that I'm working on. It's in the very early stages.

The patrons chuckled and he shook his head as he strode over to the end of the bar where George Herman had planted himself after the band had played. The man was in his mid-sixties with gray hair that he kept neat and trimmed. Deep lines etched his face as if he had a hard life. He never said much and kept to himself. He'd come by to listen to the bands and place an order for a cup of black coffee. Maybe he'd add a grilled cheese sandwich to change it up, but nothing else. "Do you want another coffee to go, Mr. Herman?"

He shook his head as he replied, "I'm done for tonight." He stood and reached for his wallet on the bar. "Keep the change," he said and placed a few bills there that were more than enough to cover his bill and then some.

At thirty years old, Maverick managed to stay fit and trim. He ran five miles every morning and he kept the junk food at a minimum. "Pretty, you say?" he shouted back then gave the women one of his heart-stopping smiles or so his fans told him when he used to play bass in the popular band, Roadside Reapers. God, was it already four years ago since he called it quits with them? "I was going for ruggedly handsome." He flipped his dark strands away from his face.

"It's those blue eyes," Joni said with a sigh. "They're framed with those dark thick lashes that any woman would kill for."
"I know I would," Katie Milton said as she came to stand beside him. She served the patrons their meals and drinks while he manned the coffee bar.

Ghosts of Christmas Past by Karen Michelle Nutt @KMNbooks #endoftheroad #amazongiftcard

Ghost stories at Christmastime may seem out of place but how many of us have enjoyed the classic tale The Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens or The Nightmare before Christmas by Tim Burton? Even the popular Christmas carol, It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, mentions there will be scary ghost stories as part of the list of good things to enjoy at Christmastime, along with the parties, marshmallow toasting and Christmas caroling.

This fascination with Christmas ghost stories may have all started In Celtic times. Spirits, ghost, and mystical beings were associated with the fire festival. Samhain may be the most haunted time of the year, but Yule comes in second. The spirits are more active as they wait for the rebirth of the Sun's powers.

In my story, End of the Road, Lars Gunner meets his untimely death just days before Christmas. 23 years later almost to the day, his daughter finally makes contact with him. The spirits of Yule may be connected with the mystical and psychic logic of the Solstice Season but one can also be visited from their ancestors.

Enjoy a new ghost story this holiday season. Best of all, End of the Road isn't a scary outrageous priced book, but only 99¢ for a limited time. Or try your luck at winning a free copy at The 25 Days of Christmas.

Heart and Soul #8sunday #snippetsunday #HeartandSoul

Maverick Strummer owed Heart and Soul, a coffeehouse located in Orange County, California, where cover bands and local talents flocked for a chance to be the headliner at the small intimate venue. Every Friday and Saturday night, the sound of music poured out of the back room like a siren's call. The close-up and personal setting for the audience proved an experience not soon forgotten either, and the fact Maverick served coffee, tea, and appetizers was also a new reality for most who liked their rock 'n' roll served with alcohol and a side of drugs.
"Last call," Maverick shouted over the din of conversation, which meant order your specialty coffees to go. Heart and Soul was closing in twenty minutes. The collective ahs of disappointment sounded like a choir warming up for their next song. "Gotta call it a night sometime," he said with a grin. "I need my beauty sleep."
"You're too dang pretty already," Joni Lee said from the back table and turned and grinned at her two friends Ben and Rafe, who were in the band that played tonight. She was a twenty-four year old blonde, who had big green eyes and a dimple in her right cheek that winked into existence when she smiled.

Lars, you got some ‘splainin’ to do! End of the Road #endoftheroad #8sunday #snippetsunday

Setup for this snippet: Cecilia has her laptop and pulls up photos of her rock star father with his arm draped around women that were not her mother.
(Cecilia's POV.) (A few changes were made to fit the sentence limit.)

"Jesus," he whistled low. "You were able to pull all those photos up with just typing in my name?"
Computers were a part of her life and access to the Internet was not a big deal to her, but it hadn't been as accessible in 1994. It was the beginning of most people's Internet journey and she had a hunch he didn't have much access to it before he died. "I can pull up videos of your band too."
"No kidding?" he voiced in awe.
She shook her head. The point of showing him the photos was to prove she knew he'd been a player. "You say you were faithful to Mom, but the photos and captions suggest otherwise."
He glanced at her with an arched eyebrow and said, "Haven't you heard of publicity shots?"

“A picture is worth a thousand words” End of the Road #endoftheroad #8sunday #snippetsunday

Setup for this snippet: Last week, Lars, who is Cecilia's father and who also happens to be a ghost, admitted he thought he was being followed because his wife believed he was cheating on her. Cecilia asked if there was any truth to the statement.

(Cecilia's POV.)

His gaze latched onto hers. "I never cheated on your mother despite the tabloids stating I was sleeping around."
"I almost believe you," she scoffed. He'd been a famous rock star. Women threw themselves at the band. Heck, she'd been to concerts where women threw their panties on stage as if it was a great turn on. Groupies were hired to follow the band and she'd be stupid to think some of the band members didn't sleep with those women if their affections were offered.
"Listen, I may be many things the tabloids claim me to be, but I'm telling you I never cheated on your mother."
She looked at her laptop and typed in a few keywords and a whole lot of photos of her father popped up with him with his arms around models, movies stars and hot rock babes. In all fairness, there were plenty of photos of his arms around her mother too.
