What have I done? End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

About this snippet: Chapter Three (Come As You Are) Snippet #1.
Check out last week's snippet from Chapter Two snippet #21 here.

Setup for this snippet with a recap from last week: Cecilia is overwhelmed from meeting her father, who just so happens to be a ghost. She did what any other person might do. She fled.
In this snippet she's had time to think about her hasty retreat.
**********************************************************************************************************************

"Ghosts aren't real," Cecilia said as she stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. In the light of day, she wondered if she had imagined the whole conversation she had with her father. "Ghosts aren't real," she said again, but it lacked conviction she needed to wholeheartedly believe that statement. She'd seen her father's ghost. Had talked to him. She frowned as she remembered her parting words to him last night. "People are trying to prove ghosts are real and you tell yours to get lost." Why in the world did she tell him to go away?
Once she dressed for the day in comfortable black slacks and a blouse, she placed a call to her mother's psychiatrist, and then she rang Fritz to tell him about her mother's episode last night.

Where are you going? End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

About this snippet: Chapter Two (Cemetery Gates) Snippet #21.  Check out last week's snippet from Chapter Two snippet #20 here.

Setup for this snippet with a recap from last week: Cecilia is overwhelmed by the conversation she's been having with her father who has been dead for 23 years.
**********************************************************************************************************************

"Where are you going?" her father asked in disbelief.
"Home. I don't want to see you again. If there's one thing I do know: Growing up, I survived just fine without a father. So, I most certainly don't need a ghost dad now."
"CeeCee," he called after her, but she didn't turn around. She couldn't when her mind finally clicked into flight mode. Her only thought was escape. Not because she feared her father's ghost, but because she feared herself. She couldn't let him into her life. He was dead and the dead should remain that way no matter how much you wished they were by your side.

Can’t deal with this… End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

About this snippet: Chapter Two (Cemetery Gates) Snippet #20.  Check out last week's snippet from Chapter Two snippet #19 here.

Setup for this snippet with a recap from last week: Cecilia accused her father that he was going to divorce her mother so even if he hadn't died, he was still going to leave her.
***The story has not been edited.
**********************************************************************************************************************

"Is that any way to talk to your father?"
She threw up her hands and laughed, a harsh and unforgiving laugh. "Father? I grew up without a father. You died when I was three years old," she told him and tears stung her eyes again as all the hurt she thought long buried resurfaced. "I can't do this. This is not real. It just can't be." She strode around him to avoid contact. Real or not, she didn't want to experience the frosty sensation she felt moments ago when she thought she could hug him.

In the end, you left… End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

About this snippet: Chapter Two (Cemetery Gates) Snippet #19.  Check out last week's snippet from Chapter Two snippet #18 here.

Setup for this snippet with a recap from last week: Her father was offended that she would suggest that he  purposely drove his truck off the pier.
***The story has not been edited.
**********************************************************************************************************************

Her eyes narrowed and she ignored his words. "You were going to divorce Mom. I know, so don't deny it. You were leaving us."
"I'm not denying your mom and I had problems and we talked about divorce, but it didn't mean I wouldn't see you. You're my kid, CeeCee, and I wouldn't do that to you."
"Yep, well you did in the end. You left me. If you didn't purposely drive your car off the pier, then your dumb ass was too drunk to realize you were taking a wrong turn and you weren't heading out to the highway."
His hands flew to his hips and his features hardened.

Time for the truth… End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

About this snippet: Chapter Two (Cemetery Gates) Snippet #18.  Check out last week's snippet from Chapter Two snippet #17 here.

Setup for this snippet with a recap from last week: Cecilia asked her ghost father if he purposely drove his truck into the ocean. Here's his response...
***The story has not been edited.
**********************************************************************************************************************

"Why in the hell would I do that?" he sputtered in disbelief.
"That's how it happened," she told him. The authorities may have deemed his death an accident, but his intentions still remained shrouded in doubt. "You and Mom threw a Christmas party here. You two fought and then you stormed out of the house."
"And you're telling me I drove my truck off the pier?" he asked. "No way. Not me. I wouldn't check out like that. I had you to consider."

Getting to know you….End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

About this snippet: Chapter Two (Cemetery Gates) Snippet #16.  Check out last week's snippet from Chapter Two snippet #16 here.

Setup for this snippet with a recap from last week: Cecilia is still trying to accept she's talking to her father's ghost. Their conversation is a bit awkward...
Now for the snippet.
***The story has not been edited.
**********************************************************************************************************************

"I knew you'd be a hot babe when you grew up–with my genes and your mother's–and damn, that didn't come out right at all, did it?"
She lifted an eyebrow at the sudden change of subject then realized this entity, this ghost, may be her father, but he was only a twenty-seven year old man when he'd died and it would seem his way of thinking had remained dormant. For him, life had stood still. He would be forever young and somehow that thought broke her heart, but for now she pushed the despair away. "Thanks?" she said more like a question, since she was unsure how to respond to his impromptu comment.
"Sorry, didn't mean to sound creepy. It's just...well, you're all grown up," he said and his voice choked even though he tried to cover it up by clearing his throat.
With all the times she'd imagined what she would say to her father if she had the chance, this conversation didn't even come close. She had others though. "Did you purposely drive your truck off the pier?" she blurted out and pointed as if he could see through the walls to where their private pier stood.

Something familiar….End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

About this snippet: Chapter Two (Cemetery Gates) Snippet #16.  Check out last week's snippet from Chapter Two snippet #15 here.

Setup for this snippet with a recap from last week: Cecilia glanced at the journal that she still held in her hand. "Earlier, did you knock the journal off the desk?" She met his gaze then. "And if you did, how are you able to touch the journal but you can't touch me?"
Now for the snippet.
***The story has not been edited.
**********************************************************************************************************************

"I concentrated on moving the air around the journal so I wasn't actually touching anything." He lifted those broad shoulders of his in a shrug.
She remembered that gesture from when she was little. Something so familiar it made her eyes sting. She missed the gesture that had been so much a part of him. How had she forgotten about it until now?
"I'm not a scientist or whatever," he was still talking and she had to force herself to concentrate on his words. "I told you I don't know how this works or why." His gaze slid over her with what she thought might be appreciation.
**********************************************************************************************************************
Not ten sentences, but this was a better place to stop. The next few lines need to be together so they don't sound odd.

You have some explain’ to do…End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

About this snippet: Chapter Two (Cemetery Gates) Snippet #15.  Check out last week's snippet from Chapter Two snippet #14 here.

Setup for this snippet with a recap from last week: Cecilia realizes her father is truly a ghost and though he appears solid, he is not. She tried to hug him but ended up walking right through him. Definitely a chilling experience in every way. Now she's questioning if any of it is real.
Now for the snippet.
***The story has not been edited.
**********************************************************************************************************************

"I am losing my mind," she murmured and pulled her arm away and shook her hand, then opened and closed it into a fist just to bring warmth back into her chilled fingers.
"No, that's not true. I'm here. I'm just on– I don't know– I guess another plane of existence."
"Then why can I see you?"
He shook his head, but then stopped and frowned as if he thought of something. "The journal. When you pulled it from its hiding place I felt something shift and I knew if I tried a little harder to be heard, you would this time."
She glanced at the journal as she asked, "Earlier, did you knock the journal off the desk?" She met his gaze now and added, "And if you did, how are you able to touch the journal but you can't touch me?"

Just passing through… End of the Road @KMNbooks #8sunday #snippetsunday

About this snippet: Chapter Two (Cemetery Gates) Snippet #14.  Check out last week's snippet from Chapter Two snippet #13 here.

Setup for this snippet with a recap from last week: Cecilia didn't believe in ghosts until her father, who died tragically 23 years ago, appears to her. She's still trying to wrap her mind around the fact that ghosts are real. We're jumping ahead a few sentences in this snippet from last week's. She threw a few questions at her father. One she asked if her mother could see him. Her father told her no, but he thought she could sense his presence.
Now for the snippet. Cecilia glances at her father, taking in his appearance all at once...
***The story has not been edited.
**********************************************************************************************************************

Her gaze met his, blue eyes so much like hers. "Dad?" she said and her voice cracked with emotion. If for a moment she believed the impossible, this was her father. "Daddy?" slipped out before she could stop herself and she crossed the room to him. He opened his arms to her, but instead of feeling the comfort of his embrace she passed right through him and a cold tingling sensation and a crackle of electricity followed, making her shiver in response.
She whirled around to find her father had turned to face her too. His eyes widened and he seemed just as stunned as she felt. She tentatively reached for him again and though he appeared solid, her hand passed right through his upper arm and the same cold tingle spread through her fingers and the crackle of static echoed in her ears. Touching him didn't really shock her like static electricity, but she did feel something, like a resistance where he stood, as if the cool air numbing her fingers was actually the substance that made up her father, but there was nothing more. He was not a solid form, not like someone who was alive and not dead.

What do you think?
Blurb:
Lars Gunner, the frontman for Silent Plaids, died 23 years ago and is trapped in limbo until his daughter, Cecilia, unearths his journal and is able to see him. His death was ruled an unfortunate accident, but he's convinced it had to be murder despite the fact he can't recall what happened in his last moments of life. Cecilia seeks the help from Kaleb, a psychic, but as they resurrect the past, the secrets and lies surrounding Lar's rock and roll life just may be the death of them too.
