B is for Beth Revis #AtoZChallenge

Today I’m continuing with the Blogging from A-Z Challenge! I’ll be posting every day except Sundays throughout April. This year, my readers voted for the theme “My Favourite Book Quotes”. So I’ve collected together the quotations that move me, inspire me and make me smile. I hope you enjoy them!
For letter B, I’ve chosen one of my favourite modern sci-fi authors, Beth Revis. I fell in love with Across the Universe when it first came out in 2011 and I also enjoyed her stand-alone ...

A is for Alice Walker & Angie Thomas #AtoZChallenge

Today is the first day of the Blogging from A-Z Challenge! This year is special because we are remembering graphic designer Jeremy Hawkins. I love the new logo to honour him, designed by Anjela Curtis.

Here Comes The Sun (#TheSundayPost)
The Latest in my life
I’ve had a pretty good week. I still have a tension headache and a stiff neck, but I’ve finally managed to get a face-to-face appointment with my GP, so hopefully, I’ll be on the mend soon.
Work is busy and lots of staff are absent, but I have enjoyed working 1:1 with a student and the team is brilliant; we are all helping each other and muddling through.
I joined a local choir on Wednesday night and had a great laugh with a friend from work. At the moment, w...

It’s time for the great and powerful Blogging from A-Z Challenge theme reveal! This will be my 10th year of taking part in the blog fest. Once again, I’m asking for your input about which theme I should write about.
Last year, I had a lot of fun writing posts based on conversations with my five-year-old daughter about philosophy and ethics, accompanied by her colourful drawings. You can check out those posts here.

My 13th Blogversary, World Book Day 2022 and Pancake Day (#TheSundayPost)
The Latest in my life
Today is my 13th blogversary! I started blogging about books and writing back in 2009. Back then, I was a 20-year-old studying for an open university degree and working part-time in a pharmacy. I’ve blogged through my wedding to my husband, the birth of my daughter, my job as assistant exams officer and then Literacy Learning Lead, and my first publication. I’ve had a few breaks along the way, but I always return to blogging as it’s a hobby that brings me a lot of s...

WEP Encouragement Award & Internal Conflicts (#IWSG March 2022)

First, I must apologise for missing last month’s IWSG post. Life has been hectic lately and, as always when I’m beginning to feel overwhelmed, my hobbies are the first things I have to drop in order to get the essentials done.
WEP Encouragement AwardI was proud of myself for participating in the WEP flash fiction challenge last month (you can read my entry here). It was cathartic letting out some of my emotions in poetry.

Yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised to hear ...

Am I Cursed? (#TheSundayPost)
The Latest in my life
Feel free to skip this long rant!
My husband started isolating with Covid last Tuesday in our spare room, so I’ve been looking after my daughter alone. I stayed off work on Monday with a sinus infection and headache and got a prescription for antibiotics and a steroid nasal spray. Unfortunately, my daughter came home from school that night with a stomach bug, which is the first illness she’s had since her Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis. It was a challenge to keep her ...

Covid-19 Visits Again (#TheSundayPost)
The Latest in my lifeMy husband tested positive for Covid-19 on Tuesday morning, so he has been isolating from us in the office where we have a sofa bed. My daughter already had it back in October, but since she now has Type 1 Diabetes, we are not quite sure how her body would react to it. She is now eligible to be vaccinated, but we apparently have to wait until we are contacted by the NHS.
Luckily, my husband’s symptoms have been mild and my daughter and I have had negative tests al...

Thoughts on Genre Conventions (#TheSundayPost)
The Latest in my lifeThis week hasn’t been too eventful. I was quite productive at work and finally managed to update the displays in our literacy classrooms. I’ve not had much energy in the evenings so haven’t done anything exciting at home. I quite like weeks like that after I’ve been so busy.
WritingI had a meeting with my local writers’ group on Zoom on Thursday. We had a really interesting discussion about genre. We talked about the essential ingredients of each genre, h...
