The Fall Furniture Collections And Collabs That REALLY Caught Our Attention…

Tell me if you think this is weird: I click through every single spammy, selly email that comes into my inbox. Like I’m talking Bed Bath & Beyond to Uber Eats (and I’ve never even used Uber Eats, I’m more of a Postmates gal myself). But seriously this is true. I wake up, brush my teeth, open my computer and see “170 unread emails” and I know they’re all from huge brands that put the subject line as “LAST CHANCE TO BUY” or “HOT NEW SALE” so I almost never read them all the way through but I click every single one until I have no more notifications (and yes I’ve tried to put them in my junk inbox and I’ve tried to “unsubscribe” but somehow they always find their way back).
Now because I do this, sometimes 1 out of the 170 emails will catch my eye, especially if the subject line is “your flight confirmation” when I didn’t book a flight and then I realize it’s just a company trying to get me to click. And I do click. But sometimes the subject line is more simple like: “Lenny Kravitz just partnered with CB2.” AND I FRICKEN CLICK. The point is email marketing definitely works on me, but it’s not that often that they make me stop in my tracks and write a blog post about them. Last week, it was not 1, not even 2, but 3 emails that made my heart hop skip, and then jump. And, judging by the title I’m sure you can guess they all have one thing in common: new furniture collections and collabs. I’m sure you’re anxiously waiting to dig into them like I am (especially since I just brought up Lenny Kravitz), so let’s dive in…
I say we start with Anthropologie because 2/3 emails that made my heart flutter were from them and it’s ultimately what started the need to write this post. OH BOY their new fall collection is hitting different, let me show you:
AnthropologieLIT FROM WITHIN

So speaking of the emails, I received TWO look books from Anthropologie. The first one is this kind of eclectic english granny vibe that’s AWESOME. I’m heavily into this gorgeous bench and these crazy fun floral chairs…that fabric is SERIOUSLY SO FUN.
Here are a few more picks: This VERY floral sectional, this pretty mirror, this ideal nightstand, and this great leather woven ottoman.
Then the second lookbook that graced my email was this more relaxed, calm, cool, collected one.
AT HEART & AT HOME

Okay…THAT COFFEE TABLE and its cousin, THAT CHAIR. They brought the fire and now it’s getting hot and heavy in here. I’m unsure which collection I like better because they’re both SO GOOD…like one feels brighter and happier and the other is curvy and sexy in a quiet way. To make a decision for yourself you can explore more of their house tours here, or you can just shop their new fall product here.
A few more picks: This awesome wicker floor lamp, this perfect still life wall art, this killer sconce, this sweet wire basket, and this wood mirror (BIG fan of the smaller size)
CB2 X Lenny KravitzA SEDUCTIVE GLOBAL AESTHETIC

I know I’ve been talking about the furniture making rooms hot and heavy but I swear I did not come up with “a seductive global aesthetic.” My guess is that was all Lenny Seriously though, I LOVE Lenny Kravitz in the design world (have you seen the Stanley House he designed? The main bedroom is SO GOOD). Honestly, it was only a matter of time before he did a collab with CB2 (I’ve been waiting). My favorite pieces are would be the lighting (like this lamp or this pendant) and this corduroy armless chair If you want to see more of the collection, you can click here.
But also here are a few more must-sees: This graphic rug, this luxe yet organic stool, this incredible bench, and this special side table.
Crate & Barrel X Shinola

When we were discussing these new fall collabs/collections, Emily just kept saying “ooh the Crate & Barrel one, include the Crate & Barrel one.” It is so delicious you guys. Jess cannot stop talking about how good this chair is and I can’t get over the fact that this couch looks like it’s a vintage find but it’s brand new (and delivers to your door). Last thing I’ll say is I want this rug. You can shop it all here.
You know I have a few more: This textured table lamp, these beautiful centerpiece bowls (very studio pottery in the best way), this great console table, and this perfect side table.
Urban OutfittersPied-à-Terre

Urban Outfitters has really been stepping up their game lately. Last year, they came out with the Isobel Collection which totally changed the game for trendy new furniture collections. They stepped it up this year with their Pied-à-Terre collection, which features this AWESOME cane bed and this really really good and sculptural dining chair. While this collection is more sophisticated, don’t you worry because they have another collection that’s totally avant basic –– cool aunts, you’re nieces will probably love anything from this UO fall collection called Scani Crush (cute name IMHO).
Some more for your eyeballs: This burl wood (I repeat, burl wood!) console table, these very cute curtain tie-backs, and this great bar cart.
Soho Home

It’s all about the sofas in the new Soho Home collection…I mean LOOK AT THIS. Okay but this rug is also just really great. So is this stool. Gah, it’s really everything about Soho Home – they’re DRIVING furniture design right now and it’s not hard to see why. I just. love. them.
Ok, two more: This dining table and this end table. AH!
Lulu and Georgia x Malene BarnettKindred Collection

Okay, THIS collection has some beautiful furniture pieces (like this bench and this console table) but the real star of the show is the wallpaper created by artist Malene Barnett. The Bequia wallpaper in indigo is so beautiful (look at the photos up close to see all of the gorgeous colors in there) but my favorite has to be the heritage wallpaper because of the insanely pretty texture – it truly looks like it’s handpainted!! 10/10 recommend this wallpaper collection for pretty much any room in your house – it’s AMAZING.
So those are the fall furniture collections and collabs that we could not stop talking about, so we had to share them with you guys Oh and of course go check out Emily’s favorites from Target. It’s FULL of really awesome stuff that she did an entire post about. Hopefully, you enjoyed this and if you have any more collections you’ve been staring at for a little too long – let us know in the comments below!! I’d love to CHAT!!!! See ya down there in a bit.

The Link Up: Emily and Brian’s Favorite Account To Follow, Caitlin’s $20 Fall Sweater, and The Fall Boots In Our Carts Right Now

Hello all! It’s link up time! We hope your weeks were full of cozy fall weather –– we got 1 rainy day here in LA and now it’s back to 90 but it did make us a little excited for pumpkin season. We’ve got some fun things to share with you today so let’s just hop right on in:
This week’s home tour comes from one of our absolute favorite design sites, the design files (those Australians really know what they’re doing). It’s the founder of YSG Studio (who we briefly mentioned in our post “designers we would totally hire to design our homes“), Yasmine Ghoniem’s Bondi apartment and we are absolutely in LOVE. Check this one out, it truly deserved the house tour pick this week.
From Emily: Brian and I are so rarely obsessed with the same things so when he texted me to follow @uselessfarm and said ‘I’m very jealous and I want to be her’ I peaked. Also Brian follows like 9 people on instagram and is very not into social media (YET – there is still hope for us). But this account (mostly via tik tok) is exactly what Brian wants his life to be – living on farm with a bunch of super awkward rag tag group of useless and awkward farm animals. I more want eggs and goat cheese, etc, but he has this vision of what he wants and this lady is living it. You HAVE to follow her, watch her reels/tik toks and go to the site to read about each animal (and donate if you are super into what she does). Amanda, you have two new major fans over here.
From Jess: An artist I LOVE, Cristina Martinez, just came out with a collaboration with Nordstrom and it’s so fun! It’s full of colorful bold patterns and the kid stuff is so so cute. Go check it out!
From Mallory: It’s BOOT SZN Y’ALL!! Fall to me is the time of year to get black boots (I don’t know why I never wear any other color boots but that’s the way the cookie crumbles). The black boots I’ve been wearing for years are finally disintegrating (I’m just happy I got to spend so much valuable time with them before they kicked it – pun intended). But anyway, I’m in the market for a boot that will last for years because I know now that I’ll ALWAYS wear black boots. These beauties caught my eye (and they come in a bunch of other colors if you’re less of a black boot person, btw). But I’m also wondering are these a better purchase for that price??? Do you guys do ALL black boots or do you like a black and brown mix?? Let me know your thoughts
Also From Mallory: For my birthday my friend gave me a Gua Sha and OH MY GOD IT’S THE BEST THING EVER. I truly had zero idea how much I needed this thing. If you don’t know what it is, watch this video to give a little overview, but it basically comes from ancient chinese medicine and you take a jade (or another crystal) tool and rub it on your face to promote lymphatic drainage and it seriously WORKS. It’s like having a mini facial every day and I’m so into it. I didn’t know I need it but it was the best gift ever (cool aunts: this would be a great gift for your nieces too). Make sure you get one that’s a real stone..if you wanna shop on etsy and support a small business this one seems great!
From Caitlin: This week I popped into Target to do some returns and WOOPS, I slipped and then came out with two new pieces that I’m SO excited about. First up was this green fisherman sweater, which fits like a total dream. It was $20 and I got a size large, but now after seeing some review photos I kind of want to get another and size up because it drapes in such an awesome way. Crewneck pullover sweaters can be super tricky with 36F boobs but this one somehow falls super nicely and doesn’t make me look/feel like a brick (FWIW I am traditionally the queen of the shapeless brigade because I didn’t know something like this was an option and now I want a million of them). And then I also grabbed this corduroy dress which was the perfect mix of tight and loose, if that makes any sense – like, it skims your bod without making you feel like a lil’ stuffed sausage casing. Wore it on a date this week and it got great marks so I highly recommend!!!
Also from Caitlin: Em just told us that she got a washable zip-off mattress topper and now I’m like…WOW why isn’t EVERY mattress topper a zip-off?!?! My current mattress topper is, uh, a little worse for the wear – I guess 9 years and a spray-tan addiction will do that to ya – so I’m very excited that I’ll no longer feel horrified by the idea of anyone seeing my mattress sans-fitted sheet. #emfluenced
From Ryann: The only show worth watching right now is Ted Lasso IMHO. It’s the ultimate feel good show, as in it makes you laugh and cry but at the end of every episode you just feel all the warm fuzzy feelings about what it means to be human. Jason Sudekis is a treasure and needs to be protected at all costs!!! If you haven’t watched it yet I guarantee it’s worth your time and then some!

My Favorite Fall Lightweight Rain Coats, Comfortable Rain Boots, And Water-Resistant Running Shoes That You’ll Actually Enjoy Wearing In the Mud

I was highly unprepared, fooled by the 2 weeks of hot sun after landing in Portland. But as I looked at my weather app (HA CORRECTION AS MY IMPASSIONED METEOROLOGIST HUSBAND ANNOUNCED THE IMPENDING DOOM/RAIN like it was a 5-day countdown) it was time to shop and get prepared for the life unknown in the mud. My goal isn’t to look cool, it is to enjoy being outside with our kids (and dogs) for extended periods of time, and the only way I’m going to do that is to be comfortable. And remember it’s not summer (so I need to be able to layer) and yet it’s not cold yet – no parkas or sherpa coats. What we need are comfortable, movable, lightweight, layerable, weather-resistant clothes and shoes to play in the mud like the real moms we are.
Rain JacketsI had a snow parka, but not a “rain jacket” (remember Oregonians don’t really do umbrellas unless running from the parking spot to the store) so I actually needed an education from my friends. They said – for fall you want a lightweight shell that you can layer under, but not a thin windbreaker or a rubber coat. It needs to be cozier, and at least one that ends below your bum so your pants (or at least seat) can stay dry. I looked online at Patagonia and Northface but they did feel more “winter” (too hot for now) but I found a couple that I really like thus far.

This L.L. Bean one is extremely lightweight (like throw in a bag easily) and has a drawstring if you are into that. It goes below the butt, is a nice color, and is sized nicely to easily layer over a sweatshirt. It has a good drape if you are into that. And listen there is something throwback about L.L. Bean that I love – it’s a heritage brand from Maine and that feels sweet and nostalgic to me.

Even though I had checked that box I was at the mall to find rain boots and popped into Lululemon like the MAM I am. It had been YEARS since I had been in, which I took as a sign of how great their product is (I loaded up in SOUPtember 2018 and have been wearing the same stuff since). I was disappointed in the colorways this time around and it just felt less cool in a lot of ways (I can’t get over their sizing – you have to size up like 3 full sizes). Now, this might have just been the buyer of this location, to be fair, but I just wasn’t attracted to very much at all (lots of teals and chartreuse). But I found this jacket in the men’s department, unbeknownst to me) and actually really liked it. Admittedly I’m not 100% sure I need both so this one might go back. This one has more structure and warmth than the L.L. Bean, is boxier, more oversized, and has a cooler pocket (???). It kinda feels like you are wearing your boyfriend’s coat, in a good way. I like the sleeves (little buttons that give the elbows volume). It has more of an athletic vibe…

1. Girl on the Go® Trench Coat | 2. Women’s Torrentshell 3L City Coat | 3. Women’s Rain Coat | 4. Women Blocktech Coat | 5. RainOut Forecast Shell II | 6. Oversize Water Resistant Rain Coat | 7. Lakeview RainOut Parka | 8. City Breeze Waterproof Rain Jacket | 9. Women’s Waterproof Packable Raincoat
My Favorite Rain Puffer

I blogged about this last year and it’s still going strong – My Uniqlo lightweight long coat. Now, this is not technically “waterproof”, but it is weather-resistant and more importantly like wearing a blanket made of air. It’s magical. In winter at the mountain house, I would layer it with a fleece underneath but it’s actually perfect for drizzly morning walks just over a t-shirt for fall. I wore it in the rain (but not pouring) and didn’t feel a thing (but you wouldn’t go “play in the rain” in it). I originally had the short version and the vest (still do) but this one, down to my ankles and not bulky is a DREAM to wear.

1. 2020 Skyliner Model Down Parka | 2. Katelyn Water Repellent Puffer Jacket | 3. Pack it Down Jacket Long | 4. Women’s Ultralight Packable Down Coat With Hood | 5. Palouse Down Parka | 6. Women’s PrimaLoft Packaway Coat
Waterproof Running Shoes
Now these I wanted to be super waterproof. I have gotten very into power walking the pups, in the rain and mud and I’m not stopping. My Nike friends recommended their Gore-tex line but their fall hasn’t launched yet and the rain is here so to avoid wet feet Brian actually found me these from Columbia on sale for $75 and I’ve been wearing them daily (3 times daily). They have good treads for traversing the roads and trails and my feet stay bone dry in the rain. Do I wish they looked cooler? Not really but I know that they could be cooler. So knowing that these are something that will get a ton of wear and tear I’ve still got my eye on what will be launching soon.

1. Nike Pegasus Trail 2 | 2. Cloudflyer Waterproof | 3. Escape FUTURELIGHT Trail Running | 4. Norvan LD 2 GTX | 5. Women’s Wool Dasher Mizzles | 6. Loom Waterproof Sneakers

OH DID I FIND THEM AND I WILL NEVER GO BACK. These are like wearing Uggs, but outside and with a tiny bit of an edge. On the outside they look utilitarian and rugged, but they are so soft and comfortable inside. Not to mention how lightweight they are. They aren’t big cumbersome rubber boots that you have to layer like 4 socks under to have some cushion or warmth. They are insulated, but not fur-lined – so they’ll keep you cozy but not sweaty. DONE. And now that I know they make kids versions, as soon as my munchkins stop growing so fast that we have to buy two pairs of boots per season, I’m going to get some for the kids, too. (Although I do love a classic Hunter or Welly, for sure, especially for true puddle jumping)

1. Original Tall Waterproof Rain Boot | 2. Minimalist Ankle Rain Boots | 3. Refined Creeper Tall Rain Boot | 4. Cirrus Tall Rain Boot | 5. The Lace-Up Lugsole Rain Boot | 6. Darcy Mid Calf Rain Boot

I bought these a couple of years ago for the boot review but never actually needed them til now. YAY. They are super simple and classic and yes, they are stylish. These are great for general rainy days where I want to go out shopping – in and out of cars, etc but want to look somewhat stylish.

1. Original Waterproof Chelsea Rain Boot | 2. Women’s Chelsea Rain Boots | 3. Refined Chelsea Boot | 4. The Chelsea Rain Boot | 5. Women’s Rugged Wellie Chelsea Boots | 6. Brex Chelsea Bootie
The Duck Shoe – (A Couple Fails But I Still Really Want Some)

I may have gone on a bit of a L.L. Bean bender (and no, this was wine-free as it is SOUPtember) but I just got so excited to actually need a pair of these classic duck shoes (were these originally for duck hunting?). Neither worked out for different reasons but I wanted to show you anyway.

I knew I could style these to look pretty darn cool, which again isn’t the point but I pictured wearing them to the pumpkin patch with the kids or just, I don’t know, enjoying a fall day out with friends feeling a little less basic.

1. Women’s Slimpack Lace Duck Boots | 2. III Hiker Duck Boot | 3. DREAM PAIRS Women’s Mid Calf Winter Snow | 4. Women’s Leather Tall Duck Boots | 5. Hunt Pac Mid Boot | 6. Women’s 8″ Bean Boots
So here I am, ready (or trying to get ready) for life in A LOT more rain. Of course, I’d love to get any more recs from those of you who know the rain life. xx

Here’s How To BEAT The Homeowner’s Emotional Reno Rollercoaster

Emily and Brian made it to Portland. I am so happy. It is going to be great having them nearby. Emily’s exuberance and passion for every little treasure and Brian’s kind and funny observations are such a joy to be around. Of course, they probably are not all that enthused at this point. Their lives are in boxes, in mud, dusty and dirty while making sure their kids feel somewhat stable and sheltered. What a challenge they have taken on!
The emotions associated with remodeling tend to follow a path that I share with many clients to help them see the light at the end of the tunnel, including Emily and Brian. So, they asked me to share what I told them with you.
I have a lot of compassion for people that go through these experiences. My favorite representation of the emotional ride that most experience is this chart:

It is surprisingly accurate. So, brace yourselves
When I meet new clients for the first time, they are both excited and nervous, letting complete strangers into their home, telling them about their goals and dreams, being self-conscious about the state of their home, and trying to gauge these strangers’ personalities… what a moment. The first meeting is almost like a first date.
Clients want to get to know us and feel that they are being heard. Hiring the Design-Build firm you jive with is extremely important. You will know a lot about each other by the time the project is over. How do you know if you can trust these strangers with so much?
Our approach is to leave our egos at the door, focus only on the clients, and filter our thoughts through the gauge of what would we do if we were them, considering the house, their goals, and their financial situation?
And then there is experience. Let’s be honest, in construction one can fake it quite easily; it is not like we are doing brain surgery. Be sure to check up on CCB numbers and references. Not hiring an experienced team might seem like the less expensive route to go, but it can snowball into a nightmare quickly.
I tell my clients that feeling comfortable telling us their concerns and not worrying about hurting anyone’s feelings helps us all move the project in the right direction. We are lucky at ARCIFORM because we have worked with each other for so long that we can banter in front of the clients about our flaws and strengths, which makes it possible for them to get to know a little bit about us right away.

Unlike the chart above, we tread very lightly during the design process, way before final estimating, to be sure we align everyone’s expectations with reality while not hampering dreaming and the creative process. As so often is the case, money takes the fun out of things, and we try to address this hurdle head-on and not wait until the working drawings are all done to find out we have outlined a project that is too expensive.
Not to be too hard on reality tv, but I must say, the numbers they run for construction costs during their home improvement shows make me roll my eyes. They leave out half of the costs and one cannot purchase supplies for the prices they quote.
My Impression Of A Reality TV Remodel Budget:Plans & SpecsFreeProject Management, Acquisitions & Delivery FreePermitsWhat?Demo FreeWaste DisposalFreeFraming???Heating Cooling Plumbing ElectricalWhy talk about that?Windows and DoorsFreeInsulationWhat?Drywall???FlooringFreeCabinetry, Counters and TileFreeMillwork???Painting???Plumbing & Lighting FixturesFreeAppliancesFreeFurnishingsFreeSometimes we might be a bit too straightforward about the costs of things since some clients want to be left in the dark as to how much they are spending, but we rather have this difficult conversation early on.
We run preliminary designs by our construction team and our trusted subs as soon as possible.
Then we have “The Talk.” This is when the first emotional crash happens. In my mind, it is the hardest.
The Dream

But once we move beyond it, we can make informed decisions from here on out. As I hear so often, construction is a game of averages. One thing may go great or cost less and then the next takes longer and gets spendy. Overall, we come out right where we’re meant to.
3. Shopping
This is euphoria for some and an identity crisis for others… or both. We make as many of the decisions before we do the final estimate and start construction to control costs and timeframes. Choosing what goes where, how big to make a window, which light brightens which corner, which lightbulb puts out the most flattering light, which tile pattern makes you the happiest… there is so very much to consider.
For the best results, the space plan, shapes, and volumes, all the finishes, fixtures, case goods, windows, doors, millwork, hardware should be considered in context. We take it one step at a time, circle back, document it all, and wrap it up in a tidy package.
4. The Dirty Work!
Now that we know what we are building and for how much we are feeling good. Construction begins! Yes! Finally, we get to see things taking shape. – Hold it! What! Noise, dust, destruction. Strangers in my house at 7:30 in the morning. For how long did you say? More strangers? My house is being temporarily supported by what?

Our clients are champions of flexibility? From doing the dishes on their porch in snowy weather to…

having microwave and barbeque cook-offs with our carpenters.

We often build temporary kitchens in basements which have their own “charm”:

There are times during construction when it seems nothing is happening. Electricians are monkeying around in the basement for days, parts are broken and need to be reordered, one carpenter is sick and now the domino effect of rescheduling causes frustration. And the sheetrock dust – no matter how many protective measures we take, the fine dust sneaks through and will find a way to settle where it is not welcome. This is all so normal, and I am so thankful for the project managers, site leads, and carpenters for focusing on the tasks at hand, keeping their cool, shuffling and sorting and keeping everyone informed.
I wanted to bring in another perspective, so I asked my friend of almost 30 years what she remembers unfavorably from the many years she had Arciform remodel her home:
“I’ve been remodeling my house for over twenty years, starting with structural issues like dry rot and drafty windows, then moving on to more creative, albeit necessary, projects. When I think about the process, it’s very easy to access the bad memories. I once googled why we remember bad things so easily, instead of good, and one theory was that it harkens back to living in a cave and having to remember which plants killed your friend, or where the sabretooth tiger lived. Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, my memories never got in the way of me doing another project. Though sometimes it took a while for me to get back on that horse, that’s for sure.

I did not move out during the process. At the crack of dawn, I would go downstairs to get my coffee before work. I take milk in my coffee. During this project, my refrigerator kept moving around the house, and in the dark early morning of winter I would crack my foot almost every day on some new pile of construction the guys left blocking the new route to the fridge. I’m pretty sure they did this on purpose. You get paranoid after a while, you know?”

This friend supplied our crew with Red-Bull to make them work faster:)
And last but not least, probably my favoite story is when we were in the middle of a kitchen remodel and our lead carpenter Jack was buckling up his tool belt to start right at 7:30 am when a sleepy client walks into the kitchen to get his coffee, stark naked. Sadly I do not have a picture of this. But we will never let this client live this one down.
Now is when all the hard work and emotional ups and downs show fruit. The sheetrock is up, the dust has been swept up, and yes (!), the tile is being set, the floors are going in, so are the cabinets and counters and finally the beautiful hardware and light fixtures. Every day is a new surprise, and, in my experience, the reality is always better than our imaginations.

Let the team finish their work before putting up the blue tape. We do a walk-through when we feel we are all done to make sure you are happy with everything. We also come back a year later to repair where paint seams and caulk lines might have opened through a full rotation of the seasons.

As Emily says, we are truly privileged to be able to do this for ourselves and our families, and while it is stressful, it is also an extremely rewarding experience. Hang in there!

Emily’s Friend Dee Murphy’s Bedroom Blew Up On Instagram – Here’s Why It’s SO Good…

Do you ever look at a room design and wonder what exactly makes it work SO well? It can be difficult to pinpoint why some rooms catch our eyes so vehemently, so here at EHD we like to break it down for you (and ourselves). Pulling together a cohesive and beautiful space is an art (duh), but we think it’s doable when you have the right knowledge and grit to get it done.
When Dee Murphy pitched us her latest bedroom reveal, she mentioned it received a lot of attention on her Instagram. None of us were surprised, of course, and we realized it is a perfect example of a bedroom that hits all the marks. So today, we thought we’d share her gorgeous bedroom and walk you through all the steps that can help you create a dream bedroom of your own.
1. Calm But Not Boring Color Palette
Bed | Quilt | Sconces | Curtain Fabric| Nightstands | Frames
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you know that we love to stress the importance of a cohesive color palette because folks, it is so important. When you keep a clear color palette in mind when choosing textiles, decor, and art, your life will be 10x easier and you’re guaranteed to have a room that brings you joy. SO, if you are starting a room design, 100% begin with a color palette. Here’s how:
Start with one color you love most Vary the tones of this color in various decor piecesCombine both cool and warm tones for a balanced look Chose an accent color (one that is almost the opposite of your main color)In this bedroom, the dark blue walls set the tone and you see different hues of blue in the rugs and textiles. The burnt orange accent color comes in through the bedding and decor and a mixture of natural wood tones and brass accents completely round out the space. If you want to do a deep dive on choosing a color palette Emily wrote all about it here.
2. Floral Mixing
Floral patterns can be intimating to work with but when done right they make a huge impact. When mixing florals, again, you want to keep in mind your color palette and vary the pattern scales. Here, the floral curtains are the obvious show stopper but if you look closely, you can see the quilt has a floral pattern as well. Also, the curtain pattern is a much larger scale than the quilt pattern. The two work extremely well together because the color of the quilt pulls from one of the main colors on the curtains. Again, another example of how sticking to your color palette does wonders.

Dee also complements her floral patterns with natural floral arrangements that highlight the accent colors she wants represented throughout the room.
3. The Art Of Collections
Collections are often personal so they are a great way to bring a unique flair to a space. You might even have a collection in your possession already and you don’t even realize it. Think about things that you have multiple of i.e. hats, small lidded boxes, figurines, or even variations of the same genre of art. These collections can be highlighted in your design by placing them close together, and in doing so you create an interesting focal point that feels special to YOU.

When you think about a collection, make sure that it is a collection of similar items that are not uniform. You don’t want a collection of the same exact thing, but you do want them to be in the same category. So if you have a collection of vessels and you want to display them together, make sure they vary in size, height, shape, and even color.

Dee’s collection of figure drawings is a perfect example of this. She arranged them around the focal point of the room (the bed frame) so they immediately catch your eye and they are similar enough to feel like a collection but they each have a uniqueness to them.
4. Mix Of High And Low
A classic EHD rule of thumb is: pretty looks good with pretty. You can have a high-end nightstand and style it with a $10 vase and thrifted candlesticks. In reality, you also WANT a mix of high and low so your room doesn’t end up being too stuffy or predictable. High-end pieces often make your affordable pieces appear high-end, so you save money and end up with a room that is much more exciting. Cheap finds are fun and often a price point doesn’t even matter when everything looks well together.
5. Mix Of Vintage And Modern

When you mix both vintage and modern pieces, you won’t ever run the risk of your room feeling too “catalogue-y”. Vintage and thrifted pieces will make your room feel eclectic and different and the newer products can elevate or complement your more exciting/unique pieces.

Much of the decor Dee has sprinkled throughout this room are vintage or thrifted, and the main pieces are modern. The bed, nightstands, curtains, sconces, and quilt are new while the rest are found pieces. This mix of both new and old makes the room feel special and highly curated.

And there you have it. Our 5 quick and easy steps to think about when designing your own room. Now that you’ve made it this far, you deserve a furry surprise:

HOW CUTE. Now, because I am nosy and curious I’d love to know what is your favorite part of this room?? Mine are those floral curtains of course. Tell me everything below and have a lovely Thursday! xx

How To Basically Decorate ONCE For Fall, Halloween, And Thanksgiving

My name is Royale Ziegler and I am a stylist, entertaining expert, and the Chief Marketing Officer for Party Supply and Home Decor business, Bonjour Fête. Last year I moved from Silver Lake, Los Angeles to Park City, Utah where I recently remodeled my home and am in the process of building out a Salt Lake City warehouse/creative studio for our company. One of my favorite things outside of decorating for parties and holiday parties, is to decorate my living space in accordance with the seasons. After making the move last year, and several storage units later, I truly realized how important/practical it is to purchase holiday decor items that are less single-use and more versatile and reusable.

Another lesson born from the move has been to find inspiration in my surroundings. Okay, so that wasn’t as simple in LA, but in Utah, I wanted to make sure the space felt light and airy like our California-cool home was, but that it also felt organic and woodsy without going full-on log cabin. The four-year-old home we purchased had great bones, lots of light, and a single-story floor plan which I have been dying for now that my son is older and takes a lot of verbal coercion to get ready for school. So much easier to yell in a single story! Unfortunately, a lot of the homes in Park City are all about dark and/or filled with orange wood on wood, wall-to-wall carpet, and multiple shades of beige on the walls, base and case, doors, etc. So, I had to wave my magical neutral wand and introduce some white and light colors to the space.

Now that we are living in our mountain chic dream home, I was more excited than ever to dress it up for the holidays. I wanted to respect the grown-upness of the space and keep the decor more elevated and focused than what I have done in the past. While there is still a lot of fun to be had with rainbow or pink Halloween decorations (I am saving these colorways for Halloween parties) I myself am feeling the need to move in a different direction, one that feels more aligned with the home and skin I live in. I want to be able to hold on to a lot of the seasonal purchases I make and so, that means buying items that are timeless and less trendy, you can pretty much guarantee that black and white will always work for Halloween and that orange can work for both Halloween and Thanksgiving. (It’s all about picking the right orange.) With all of this in mind, I hope to offer you some tips on how to style your space in a meaningful and lasting way for fall, Halloween, and Thanksgiving without spending all your dough.
Tips On Transitioning Your Holiday Decor From Halloween To Thanksgiving: Stick With A Neutral Color-StoryIncorporate creams, blushes, browns, and blacks with pops of autumnal colors like orange and mustard. This way your seasonal decor feels more evergreen, while still fall-forward, and without catering to a particular holiday. (Clearly, this design aesthetic is applied throughout my home, we’re big fans of neutrals!) If you’re not into neutral, there are a ton of fun black and white and colorful fall items to pick from.
Use Organic Materials Like Dried Florals And Real Pumpkins

Dried florals in vases (which you can switch out to feel more Halloween or Thanksgiving) and in wreaths will last well beyond one holiday. Switch out the ribbon and accent decor on a dried wreath to make it more holiday-specific. We used bats and black ribbon for Halloween and faux leather pumpkins and a gingham fabric ribbon for Thanksgiving. There are also a lot of great faux options out there, we used branches featuring acorns and maple leaves in the kitchen! When you are done with your pumpkins, make toasted pumpkin seeds!

Le Gobble Turkey Melamine Plates
Spend more on permanent, reusable items like table linens and dinner plates, then mix in fun, holiday-specific paper (the ones I used are made from eco-friendly paper) or melamine plates and napkins for a touch of whimsy. Plus, you won’t have to do as many dishes!
Go Heavy On Pumpkin Decorations
They work for both of the fall holidays and come in many different sizes and textures—linen, paper, faux leather, flocked, etc.

White Tassel Garland | Paper Mache Ghosts

I switched out the screensaver on my Samsung Frame TV to mix up the mantle moments! (Note, these were two photos I took on my iPhone, free to me!) Don’t have a Frame TV? Pop a cute print-it-yourself print on your mantle or shelves from shops like my friend Stacey’s at Threadmama or Etsy.
Shop Small, Local, And Women-Owned When You Can
We shopped primarily with Foundation Goods, Flower Bar Co., and of course, Bonjour Fête. While this may not necessarily be a tip on how to decorate for less, it is still worth mentioning. If you’re intentional about your spending on goods that can be used for both holidays and beyond, paying a bit more to support a small business can go a long way as successful local establishments often help communities thrive. And when a community thrives, home values rise and boom—you stand to actually make some money! Plus, a lot of holiday decor out there is made from plastic, ew, so shopping small and utilizing organic and/or recycled materials means less waste! Lastly, it is all about quality over quantity especially if you’re hoping to use your decor items for more than one season, and small businesses certainly have the edge over big box stores here! (And, if you do go big box for some items, try and shop designer collaborations like Justina Blankely’s Jungalow line for Target, from which I scored the cute tassel garland that was giving me ghost vibes.)
Let’s Get Into These Floral Varieties From Shawn ChamberlainAnother incredible upside from the move has been connecting with an inspiring group of women! The Utah creative/maker scene is ripe with female talent and everyone is so kind and genuine. One of my favorite people is Shawn Chamberlain owner of Flower Bar Co. in Midway (the world’s sweetest town). Shawn joined me for a day of arranging and decorating and has shared some tips for you in case you don’t have a Shawn to call on!

Ghost Arrangements: Curly willow branches, celosia, bittersweet, bleached oak leaf, bleached fern, explosion grass, bunny tail, dried gypsophila, eucalyptus seed.

Thanksgiving Centerpiece: Dahlia, butterfly ranunculus, hydrangea, garden rose, strawflower, spirea, amaranthus, explosion grass, bittersweet

Wreaths: Bittersweet, painted fern, dried broom corn, scabiosa pods, eucalyptus seed, copper beech, curly willow branches

If you want to DIY your florals, here are some helpful tips for arranging on your own:
1. Start with a clean vase and add clean water. Switch up your vases seasonally and obviously we cannot get enough of this paper mache ghost bucket for Halloween! If you do choose a vessel that is not fit to hold water, use a smaller vase inside—here we propped a small vase up inside of a small hatbox!
2. If you are bringing a bouquet home from the grocery store, consider adding fresh foliage and grasses cut from your own yard. Shawn loves to cut and mix in herbs, ferns, small branches (especially fall-colored branches), and even some weeds—yes weeds!—like thistle, grasses, berries, and tumbleweed stems to her arrangements. Bringing in dried elements like yarrow or faux floral spray is a fun touch too! Afloral has a great selection.
3. Cut your stems on a 45 degree angle and then add them to your vase one at a time. Let the stems place themselves, droop, twist or curl the way they want to in order to achieve that effortless, gathered look.
4. Be sure to refresh your water every few days and pull out any stems that are spent.
5. Take lots of photos of your creation and give yourself a high five for creating something beautiful to enhance your space!

There you have it! I hope that this was helpful and that you are excited (like me:)) to decorate, not in any way overwhelmed. The holidays are about joy so however you choose to decorate, may it bring just that. The Dining Chairs That Will Meet All Your Comfort Needs + Rules for Picking Them Out

Today’s post has been in the works for a while. It’s a topic that has been talked about many a time in the EHD office, requested by more than a few of our readers and that one piece of furniture that Emily had been on the search for years til she found them here. That’s right. It’s time for a comfortable dining chair roundup! As someone who has truly never owned or had a comfortable dining chair growing up, I feel your pain (especially in the buttocks region) but fret no more since we have 96 chairs with and without arms for you to choose from at all different price points. Plus, some very useful tips to consider when choosing the right chair for your own dining area.
Before we get into all of those pretty and more importantly comfy dining chair options below, let’s first take a moment to go over some of our tried and true ‘rules’ (aka guidelines) you can implement in your own space. Even as a trained interior designer I am constantly referring back to all of our design rules posts because let’s be honest sometimes design can be a tad overwhelming and very subjective so it’s nice to go back to the basics of why a space will visually work better than others. It all comes down to measurements which is something that makes sense to me. Not really the math aspect since that is not my forte…shhhh, I know it’s used a lot in interior design (hello best friend aka my calculator). But proportions and spatial planning is ‘my thing‘, it’s probably the reason why I also love to organize and help others pack to move.
OKAY, enough about my odd hobbies, let’s get into those Dining Chair Rules…
Figuring Out Your Table Size & How Many Chairs to Buy
You can’t really pick out your dining chairs without first knowing the scale of your dining table. I mean you can but it will probably be easier to start with the larger furniture piece and then add in your chairs later. So what size table do you have and how many chairs will you need to purchase?
Here is a seat guideline for rectangle tables depending on size:
48″ long table: seats 460″-72″ long table: seats 680″-87″ long table: seats 892″-108″ long table: seats 10120″ long table: seats 12And for round / square tables depending on size:
42″- 48″ diameter table: seats 460″ diameter table: seats 6-8Keep in mind that no matter the size of your table you will want to leave approximately 24″-26″ width of eating space per person + an additional 6″ between the chairs to account for elbow room and ease of a person getting up, out of their chair from a fully occupied table. This will spare your guest (once we have those again) from an awkward moment of asking the person next to them to ‘scooch over a bit’ to be able to get out to use the bathroom during a dinner party. The width of most dining chairs will be between 16″-20″ with the ‘more comfortable’ ones in the 20″-25″ range.
Hot TipTo make sure that the number of chairs will work with your table size, measure from the widest point of the chair and from the inner of the legs of your dining table instead of the top of the table.
Two other things to take into consideration – 1. If your dining table is on the smaller side try opting for a chair without arms to save on space. 2. If you buy additional chairs for when the table is extended to the maximum length be sure to figure out a designated spot for them to live since that might happen only a couple of times throughout the year.
Choosing the Right Scale Chair & Finding the Comfy Factor
Now, let’s figure out the right scale of your chairs for your dining table. Most standard dining tables range in height between 28″-30″ but there are some dining tables that are more counter height in the 34-36″ range so make sure to take a second look at the dimensions before you ‘add to cart’. We are going to focus on the standard dimensions today as they are the most common.
The seat height of a dining chair will be between 17-23″ and there should be about 12” of space between the top of the seat and underside of the tabletop or bottom of the apron. If your dining chairs have arms they should be able to slide under your table with ease so be sure to have at least 7” of clearance between the top of the arm height to the underside of the table or bottom of the apron.
Speaking of height let’s talk about your chair’s overall height in consideration to the scale of your table. Meaning that if you have a table that seats 4, approx. 42-48″ in diameter, steer clear of the chair that measures 48″ high overall and leave that to the larger more formal dining table sizes. It will just feel more proportional
6 Factors to Consider that Will Make Your Dining Chair More Comfortable:
Seat Width: 18”-22″ for more ‘wiggle’ roomOpt for an upholstered seat or sling seat (see the white director chairs in the photo above)Seat Depth: 20-24” for the lounging elementWhich brings us to the lean-ability of the chair, an angled seat back or upholstered back for those long post meal conversationsIf you have the space, dining chairs with arms will be much more ergonomic. If you are one to have long dinners it will allow you to truly relax because you can rest your arms making it easier to lounge.Materials Matter: It’s a simple fact that an all upholstered chair will be more comfortable, it’s like a sofa but smaller. Hot TipOn big box retailers websites take a look around to see if you can search by customer rating, that way you are starting with the furniture pieces that others have verified to be comfortable or to be a quality product.
Now that the school lesson portion of this post is over, let’s talk about the fun stuff and get into our comfortable dining chair roundups.

Personally, I am a fan of the “armless” dining chair because typically they are less expensive than those with arms. Who wouldn’t want to save some cash on a surprisingly expensive piece of furniture that you have to buy multiples of them??? Speaking of cost, be sure to take a close look at the prices cause some of these beauties come in a “set of 2”.

The ‘with Arms’ Comfortable Dining Chairs
Up next, we have all of your ‘with arms’ options. Debatably more comfortable than the armless counterpart given that after a long meal with family or close friends you could casually tuck your legs up, slouch down a little and enjoy a long conversation over many cocktails or play one of EHD’s favorite board games – Anomia.

Hawkins Dining Chair
The simplistic style and price point of #24 would be a great chair in either a traditional or modern home, of course, I am drawn to #32 because it is a part of the semi-new Leanne Ford’s Crate & Barrel Collection which I am obsessed with everything from the line (Leanne, if you are reading this it’s amazing!). And if you are a part of the EHD Insider Community you might’ve already seen the special sneak peek of the mood board where we are using these nightstands from her line in an upcoming project! Also, I can personally attest to the comfort factor of #40 since we used them in the dining room of Portland project (see photo above) and where I did countless hours of work in that very chair on the end by the french doors.
So there you have it! I hope by now you feel confident to pick out the most comfortable dining chair for your home and again if you need to check out the rest of the dining room rules do so here. And if you don’t really care so much about only the comfort factor but want some more affordable options check out this post here or want to know how to mix and match dining chairs like a boss click over to this post here. How To Make Your Living Room Look Better (The 7 Dos and Don’ts)

I wish I could remember who threw out this blog post title in our last brainstorm. Originally it was simply “How To Make Your Living Room Look Good” and we all laughed it off… at first (even the person that jokingly said it). But then, as if the same lightbulb unanimously lit up above all of our heads, we looked at each other and said, “wait is this kinda an awesome post title/idea??” Sure we have covered all of these tips on the blog more than a few times, but it’s kinda nice to have them all in one place, right? Like a living room design checklist that’s easy and not at all intimidating. Like a “Living Room Design For Dummies” expect no one’s calling anyone a dummy!
I think we’ve all been there, staring at our living room, scratching our head as to why it’s just not “right”. Well, that is allllll about to change because baby, you now have a crystal clear list of only seven things to do to fix all (ok, most) of your living room design woes. First up is our NUMBER ONE…
1. DON’T: Have A “Too Small Rug”
Look, large rugs don’t usually come cheap which is a very understandable reason for not being able to “go big or (don’t) go home because your rug is still too small”. But I promise there are affordable options if you dig, wait for sales (remember Black Friday is only 2 months away but also HOW?! WHAT IS TIME?!), or take a little extra time to save up for the right one. This post goes into all of the things you need to know for choosing your perfect rug and has some shopping options (or at least some great places to look if you don’t see something that grabs you). It’s our #2 Design Mistake so we are passionate about it.
THE GO-TO EHD RULE CHEATSHEET

Painless right? Well, this next one might not be so easy for some of you.
2. DON’T: Clutter Your Space With Too Much Stuff
I am a HUGE offender when it comes to buying wonderful little things I don’t necessarily need. If I turn my desk chair around right now, I am staring at three, yes THREE candelabras. I’m getting better but it’s a constant struggle.
And this tip may have maximalist UP IN ARMS but let me make my case/you don’t have to follow every rule if you are happy with what you’ve got going on. But sometimes it’s easy for things to get “bitsy” and too “visually busy”. If you want to keep your maximalist style going just make sure there’s a good variety of scales in your decor. That is going to really help your eye bounce around instead of getting a wall of “the same”, where nothing really stands out.
But for those not wanting to go maximalist and prefer mediumism (that’s me!) or minimalism, this is for you. You want to let the things you really love have some breathing room because that will let you breathe a little easier. For me, clutter or having too much stuff in a space gives me low-grade anxiety. Sadly, I’m not kidding. I promise how your home looks affects you both good and bad depending on how happy you are with it.

Look at this photo of Emily’s old living room. The color palette is SOLID, helping it to look less chaotic but still interesting with the varying tones, materials, and shapes, yet nothing is packed together (like in her old old old living room in the first photo). They’re still plenty of beautiful pieces but it’s less crammed so you can take it all in.
FYI this also VERY much goes for furniture too! Julie wrote a great design mistake post about that particular topic so if you feel like that might be one of your issues here’s some help
Ok, now for an easy break!
3. DO: Add A Hit(s) Of Black
If you don’t have some solid hits of black in your living room may I suggest you rectify this STAT. Sprinkling black pieces of decor around your living room will really help to add some awesome visual weight and probably some needed contrast. If you reeeeally love a light, neutral space just go delicate like with a small vase, an accent in a pillow, or a piece of art. We promise that your room will just look more elevated and balanced. Shall we take a look at Em’s LA living room?

Not one black decor piece in this living room feels heavy. Instead, they all help to ground the design perfectly. See how it’s used in the art, lamps, vases, shelf decor, and furniture accents? They are all spread out evenly so your eye can rest. A balanced design is a happy design in my opinion.
But also don’t feel like you can’t go bolder! Just make sure that you have other pieces that can stand up to it and yes, balance it visually. Ok done saying “balance”… or am I???
4. DO: Style A Throw Blanket (Or Two)
SO simple but so easily forgotten. A styled throw really makes it look like your living room’s got its SH*$ together. But there are A TON of ways to do it and I’ve laid out our favorites.

On the left, we have the more “organic” look. This is the equivalent of the perfect messy top bun. It may take you 15 tries, but once it’s just right, it looks perfectly effortless. EHD (and now AD) stylist, Emily Bowser’s fun hack for this is to grab the throw slightly off-center, pick it up, and then gently toss it onto the sofa. Well, that’s at least how Emily Henderson remembers it and honestly, it works!
Hot TipIf you are wanting to style your throw in the organic look consider the thickness of your fabric. If it's too thick it's going to be very hard for it to not just look bulky.
On the right, we have a slightly less organic look but it still has a casual vibe. Just fold longways then in half, slightly separate those halves, then lay it nicely onto your seat cushion under your throw pillows. BOOM! Style throw perfection.
Ok, let’s get structured:)

On the left, we have the “folded nicely over the chaise” look that Arlyn did for her MOTO shoot. It’s a great way to easily have your throw looking intentional and well designed. Plus, it’s nice to give your chaise some attention.
On the right, is the ” folded nicely over the arm” look which is how my sofa throw is currently styled. It’s SO EASY. Plus if you are entering your living room and are “greeted” by the side of your sofa, it’s a nice way to add some pattern and texture. But if you have a decent-sized side table next to your sofa it might look a little strange.
If you are a person that’s more of a video visual learner, Emily made a great IGTV on how to “throw a throw”. Enjoy!
5. DO: Put A Tray On Your Coffee Table
If you’ve been following EHD for a while you know we are tray LOVERS. They add more texture, look super pretty, and corral your things. A practical decor item does exist! Just kidding, there are a bunch but this one is our favorite. Plus it can be super affordable. Trays come at almost every price point.

We like to contrast our tray shapes to our coffee table shapes. It keeps things visually interesting. Look at how great this rectangular wood one is on Emily’s beloved coffee table. It also perfectly holds some books, coasters, and a snack bowl (mandatory in my opinion). But you could also replace the bowl with a candle, small plant (if there wasn’t already foliage on the table), and/or of course, add your TV remotes.
Oh, and you can also use trays on your credenzas for a little mini-bar setup. It looks very cute, intentional, and obviously fun. See Em’s version in the photo above?

Also note how Emily Bowser also contrasted the shape of her tray to her coffee table? If she hadn’t corraled those pretty decor pieces, they may have looked a little all over the place. It’s a really great trick I promise. Just try it if you haven’t already.
6. DO: Add A Standing AND Table Lamp/s
Oof lighting is so important. So since you need light to you know, use your living room, you might as well use it to your advantage. Emily thinks that it’s important to have both a floor AND at least one table lamp (depending on your room size). Varying heights will make your room look interesting and having more than one lamp will balance the light throughout your room. Plus at night, if you have enough lamps, you can turn off your overhead lighting which helps to calm you down for the night. If you need proof that this is important, have a listen to this incredibly interesting Armchair Expert interview with neuroscientist, Andrew Huberman. It kinda blew my mind.

Hey, that’s my old living room:) See how having a tall and short lamp makes your eye move around? They also speak to each other in terms of color but are totally different styles. That’s a very important thing to note too. Don’t go too matchy-matchy (aka don’t have two tripod lamps in the same room).
We’ve almost made it to the end y’all! Last one…
7. DO: Create Conversation Area With Furniture
I’d say the main purpose of a living room is to have a place to hang out with people you like and want to talk to. Ok ya, if there’s a movie on then everyone pipe down. But regardless of movie night, you want to set up your living room to encourage conversation. Size obviously matters. You can’t pack in a sofa, two chairs, and a bench seat if your living room is tiny. BUT if you can have more than just a single sofa, make sure all of your seating isn’t all in a line on one side of the room.
In Sara’s living room above, she was able to have her sofa and two chairs across from each other. A great conversation layout. But Mel didn’t quite have the same amount of square footage in her old place…

So instead, she put a chair on each side of her sofa facing in. They aren’t across but they also aren’t technically on the same side of her sofa. (When she lived there, she and her guests could happily converse without having to turn their entire bodies to the side. Win-win-win.
Alright, class dismissed! Did you learn anything? Reminded of some hot tips maybe? I actually ended up storing some of my many pieces of art that were just leaning against the wall out of my living room to make it look less cluttered. I can’t tell you how much that small change made me feel so much better. How about this. Unless you are 100% in love with your living room, I challenge you to try one before next week. Deal? Let me know which one you are going to try in the comments!
Love you, mean it.

Miss Mid-Century Modern Design? This MCM Palm Springs Condo’s History And 2021 Glow Up Will Fix That ASAP

When I think of mid-century modern design, I can’t help but think of simplicity, timelessness, and yes, Don Draper from Mad Men wearing a sexy suit. There is something about this style that oozes maturity and good taste and today’s home tour serves just that. If you love mid-century modern style (and honestly, who doesn’t??), you’ll love this historic Palm Springs condo.
Christa Martin is a renovator who has a deep love and admiration for mid-century architecture, so when she found this original Palm Springs 1965 condo designed by renowned architect William Krisel, she knew she struck gold. The Sandpiper Complex, where this condo is located, is historically designated architecture because it was the first condominium development in the Palm Springs area. To honor its rich history, Christa sought to revamp it while maintaining the original charm, but there were a few updates Christa immediately envisioned in order to make her modern vision come to light.

Single Cylinder Keyed Entry Handleset
Through the front doors, you can see the iconic Palm Springs palm trees, the surrounding mountains, and the bright condominium landscape, all of which Christa wanted to highlight in her design. Palm Springs is almost synonymous with mid-century modern architecture and design, so it is no surprise that Christa drew a lot of inspiration from the area.

Sink | SemiHandmade Supermatte White Flush/Slab Doors | MSI Classic White Quartz Countertops | Walnut Shelves | Slide-In Gas Range in White | Microwave Hood | Built-In Tall Tub Dishwasher | Lexi 8″ Bulb Light
One room Christa knew needed an upgrade was the kitchen. The original kitchen layout was small and cramped so she decided to expand the open concept so the kitchen would flow directly into the living room. This openness allows for the abundance of natural light could do its magic. She also brightened the space by painting the walls a bright white which allows the light to bounce around throughout the space making it feel extra bright and airy.

Bottom Freezer Refrigerator in White | Woven Counter Stool
The white appliances and slab door cabinets keep the space minimal and sleek, and the walnut accents are a classic nod to the mid-century style Christa was going for.
As far as the renovation aspect of the project, Christa was focused on budget and practicality so this kitchen could be as functional as possible. To keep costs down, she waited until sales were happening for the Semihandmade, Whirlpool, and CB2 items and opted for Ikea cabinets instead of custom cabinets. If time is on your side, waiting for sales to happen is a great hot tip if I’ve ever heard one. Overall, there were zero splurges on the kitchen, yet she managed to design an inviting and practical kitchen that is perfect for entertaining.

Paintings by Christa Martin
Is any MCM home complete without a bar area? I think not. This area opposite the kitchen functions as bar storage and more counter space for potlucks and parties. In order to make space for this area, she nixed the dining table so there is more room for entertaining and food prepping.

Basket Pendant Light | Wall Paint Color | Bounce Ivory Woven Stools
While most of the decor is kept simple, that oversized basket pendant 100% steals the show. It is understated yet packs a punch and adds the needed natural texture to the space. And those bar stools?? Sign me up. I love the subtle woven texture and the off-white coloring that blends really well with the neutral color scheme.

Eames Catch-All (vintage) | Perigold black glass desk (vintage) | Painting by Christa Martin
Architect William Krisel was known for his open floor plans and large windows to bring in as much natural light as possible. In a desert like Palm Springs, there is no shortage of sunlight, so the floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors are a key component in utilizing natural light and bringing the outdoors in. Christa decided to keep the original glass doors here which highlights the landscape and the surrounding mountains.

Clad 3 Door Credenza | Rug | Black Leather Sling Chairs (vintage)
Christa sourced both new and vintage furniture that would highlight the classic MCM style of the space. The sleek warm wood-toned credenza, leather vintage sling back chairs, and the woven rug all bring in natural elements while accentuating this eclectic style. When it comes to mid-century modern furniture, the focus is on natural textiles and organic curves that add movement and intrigue to a space without being too overwhelming.

Just outside the living room sliding glass doors is a patio that Christa wanted to make as useful as possible. She moved the dining table out to the patio to enjoy the views and weather and added a gas fireplace table nearby for colder nights. The other side of the patio has a breeze block wall for privacy and became a perfect spot for yoga.

Acacia Wood Round Mirror | Cabinet
What I always love about a MCM-inspired home is the bold pops of color that offset the natural wood tones and minimal design. Orange and red hues are a classic component of the MCM style, and Christa sprinkles them in perfectly with the orange standing vase and patterned rug.

If you are wondering how to add depth to a small, boxy bathroom, don’t skip the shower tile wall. The green Heath Ceramics subway tile adds an organic texture and of course color to this otherwise white bathroom. Because these tiles are hand-glazed they are not uniform, so in order to get a unique mix of tones, Christa bought seconds so she would have even more variation in the glaze. She then laid them out herself on the floor reworking the placement to get the perfect mix of hues.

Korey Metal Platform Bed Frame with Upholstered Headboard | nuLOOM Braided Yvette Trellis Jute Area Rug | Casper Mattress | Quilted Velvet Round Pillow
Talk about wood paneling done right. I feel like I have been transported to the 60s and I LOVE IT. This accent wall looks like it could have been original, but Christa actually bought the 10’x4’ wood panels and had her contractor install them. This is a fairly doable project for anyone who wants to create an impactful (and natural) MCM accent wall.

Boucle Decorative Throw Pillow Caramel | Tufted Square Pillow Cream

Faucet | Vessel Sink with Overflow | Shower Head | Berkeley Vanity | Shower Tile | Light Single Globe Pendant
Similarly, in the primary bathroom, Christa installed a colorful shower tile wall and then continued the subway tile to act as a backsplash above the double vanity. Again, Christa carefully mixed the individual tiles so the different hues would be evenly spread out.

Heron Blue Tile | Marble Mosaic Tile
Well, it’s official. I have fallen in love with MCM all over again. How about you?? Let me know all your thoughts in the comments below. But first, buckle up for the stunning before and afters:

Huge thanks to Christa for allowing us to feature this project.

Fall 2021 Is All About Comfort, Ease, Affordability, And Gathering Again In Target’s New Big Launch

This fall is going to be different than last year – 100% guaranteed. The kids will actually go to school (after a year and a half of “home school”, they’ll start soccer and we might even know what day of the week it is. Sure, the end of summer is always a bit sad, but we are ready to cozy up for fall. Today I’m showing you the fall Threshold collection that just launched from Target and it’s all about warmth, clutter-free comfort, and setting up your home to create more analog moments. It’s time to cozy up, hunker down and create some touchpoint fall decor pieces that might involve a pumpkin or nine, depending on your pumpkin level (I’m a 2 :)).
The Importance Of Comfort
I sound like a broken record, I know, but with spending more time in our homes (and hoping that continues) I need every piece of furniture to be comfortable and inviting. I’m not interested in the chair that everyone secretly avoids sitting in. So I’d love to introduce you to a few of my favorite pieces of furniture that I LOVE, should you be in the market.

That green chair is SO GOOD and rivals this bench for my favorite piece of furniture in the fall collection. We are going to get it for the mountain house since I’m bringing up my vintage chair to Portland. The color is perfect, the velvet is soft and looks luxurious (not cheap, I promise) and the wood arms are a perfect complement to most sofas. Also the SCALE … it’s just VERY good – large enough for roomy comfort, but not huge.

The dining chairs and table are also EXCELLENT. The chairs feel solid and yet the leather has some stretch so they are totally comfortable. Again, their scale is very good – minimal in design, but large enough to be comfortable for all sizes. And that table – it’s such a good simple and modern design that can work in so many different styles of homes, but certainly has a fresh look.

Dining Table (coming soon!) | Dining Chairs | Dried Branches
Also, that sconce – SO GOOD and could easily go over nightstands. The vase is also excellent with a lot of texture but such a simple shape. Target is actually selling those plumes, too!!!

Smart Storage Pieces To Control The Clutter

You know how I feel about clutter these days (I’m NOT part of the clutter-core movement), and yet our lives require us to have some things, and many of us want to display our prettier pieces. Vertical bookcases and hutches take up less space than horizontal and they can go far more places if narrow enough. These wooden shelves above are so pretty, look very high-end (yet are affordable), and when combined with pretty canvas and leather bins they can still hide what you want to hide (toys, remotes, etc) while looking nice on a shelf.

1. Framed Landscape Print | 2. Set of Candlesticks | 3. Bookshelf | 4. Woven Basket With Handles | 5. Harvest Squirrel Bookend | 6. Squirrel Bookend | 7. Fabric Plush Pumpkin | 8. The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy | 9. Magnolia Table Volume 2 by Joanna Gaines | 10. Wild Creations by Hilton Carter | 11. Educated : A Memoir by Tara Westover | 12. Glory by Kahran Bethencourt & Regis Bethencourt | 13. Home Body by Rupi Kaur | 14. Man Enough: Undefining My Masculinity by Justin Baldoni | 15. Home Edit : A Guide to Organizing and Realizing Your House Goals by Clea Shearer & Joanna Teplin | 16. The Nickel Boys – by Colson Whitehead | 17. Leadership Strategy and Tactics by Jocko Willink | 18. The Invisible Life of Addie Larue by V E Schwab | 19. Billie Eilish – don’t smile at me | `20. Kendrick Lamar – good kid, m.A.A.d city | 21. Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On | 22. Temptations – Number 1’s | 23. Taylor Swift – evermore | 24. Halsey – Manic (LP) | 25. Harry Styles – Fine Line | 26. Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On | 27. Queen – Greatest Hits 2 | 28. Taylor Swift – folklore |29. Billie Eilish – WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?

That hutch is EXCELLENT. It reminds me of the one that I had in our dining room in LA for years, except even better because it has 1/2 closed storage to hide things like extra candles or linens for entertaining. The black metal is super chic and modern, but the shape and style are certainly classic. We styled it out to go in three different rooms as you can see below – dining, den, and living room.

1. Hutch | 2. Bowl | 3. Wreath | 4. Brass Leaf Bowl | 5. White Wine Glass | 6. Red Wine Glass | 7. Wire Basket | 8. Can’t Catch Harry | 9. Exploding Kittens | 10. Cards Against Humanity | 11. You’re On Mute | 12. Throw Burrito

1. Floral Diptych | 2. Media Credenza | 3. Record Player | 4. Orange Gorde | 5. Ceramic Cream Pumpkin | 6. Ceramic Pumpkin | 7. Braided Basket
For those of you in need of a horizontal media piece, this new credenza or media cabinet is pretty darn handsome. It can even go behind a sofa facing out and act as a sofa table for lamps and extra storage for records or board games.
Fall Touchpoints In Decor – That Can Be Year-Round
Some things are distinctly fall (pumpkins) but warm caramel-y tones and textures can be year-round (or you can store them for every fall if you are a seasonal decorator). You know I love a broken stripe pillow and that one is VERY good and would work in every single room in my house, and all I’d need is that beautiful rust toned velvet pillow on our sofa to go from summer to fall (because, yes I am a seasonal decorator which shouldn’t be shocking). Add some dried branches and some woven pumpkins and there you have it – fall, done simply, affordably, and with elegance.

It’s hard to see in these shots, but that basket above is SO SMART. You can transform it from low and wide to tall and deep with a quick little latch change. The wood handle on top is soo good – every single person on set wanted this basket – and I very rarely freak out about baskets.

1. Chair | 2. Sweet Home Hook | 3. Wire Basket

We put it under the coffee table which takes a stack of magazines and makes it look FAR more organized and pulled together. Also, that coffee table is excellent, and the bottom shelf adds always needed extra surface area for less sightly storage (like a box for remotes or magazines/coffee table books you don’t want to clutter the top).

1. Sofa | 2. Plaid Lumbar Pillow | 3. Velvet Red Lumbar Pillow | 4. Stripe Black and White Pillow | 5. Floor Lamp | 6. Grid Blanket | 7. Wood Coffee Table | 8. Fall Candle | 9. Vase | 10. Side Table | 11. Rug | 12. Accent Chair | 13. Grid Pillow | 14. Basket | Throw Blanket

The top of the coffee table is a really pretty wood tone that looks very high end and the scale of it is great for a small space. We at EHD love a round coffee table especially when the rest of your furniture is squared off. P.S. that is a smaller version of the same vase on the dining table that we LOVE.

How good is that bench??? It looks so high end and the mix of textures (linen, wood, and leather) makes it definitely look special. The basket vase holds dried branches (also sold at some Targets) and those two pumpkins are my favorite and the ones we’ve brought out for years.

1. Mirror | 2. Oak Leaves Art | 3. Table Lamp | 4. Stripe Orange Lumbar Pillow | 5. Wire Basket | 6. Corn Husk Pumpkin | 7. Woven Vase | 8. Stripe Basket | 9. Bench

While you may not put pumpkins in your bedroom the warm textiles can certainly help the transition to winter. Emily Bowser threw that beautiful rust-toned quilt over a simple wood headboard and it looks totally upholstered and high-end with mini-channel vertical tufting!).

We layered all the textures – faux fur blanket, velvet bolster, and stitched longer pillow to make it look super tied together, warm but not fussy at all. This is our formula that always WORKS (you can lose one decorative pillow if you want, but we are huge fans of less decorative pillows – just a long one or two – I’ve been writing about this for years – see this post).

The mirror is EXCELLENT – it’s oversized which takes it from your average closet mirror to a more substantial piece. It has this really pretty curved wood that is thin and delicate, making it look really high-end. Good Job, Target. This can be hung or leaned and could be great in many rooms (not just for bedrooms). I love how Emily B. hung the dried flowers over the mirror to add some character and style (and they are from Target, too!).

We were also all big fans of that wicker lamp – simple, textural, can go anywhere and feel boho in a really soft way.

1. Table Lamp | 2. Mantel Clock | 3. Cream Flannel Bedding | 4. Quilt | 5. Grid Oversized Lumbar Pillow | 6. Velvet Bolster Pillow | 7. 24″ x 30″ European Hillside Framed Wall Art | 8. Faux Branch | 9. Mirror | 10. Plaid Sheets | 11. Dot Sheets | 12. Faux Fur Throw Blanket | 13. Nightstand | 14. Vase With Faux Branch | 15. Rug | 16. Basket
Time To Gather And Entertain
This fall there will be more gatherings, but most of these pieces are totally year-round. There are heavy pottery plates that look totally hand thrown. And the cutest little personal french onion soup containers (fun fact – it’s Brian’s favorite soup and the only one I have never made. I know what I’m going to do for his birthday in October (ahem CROCKtober, now).

Those glasses are the ones that we have that I SWEAR by (thin and modern, but hard to break) and the terracotta vase and amber vessel are great additions to the collection that Emily B. wanted to steal from the shoot.

1. 14×15 Gold Oak Leaf in Ceramic Pot | 2. Pumpkin Baking Vessel | 3. 16pc Stoneware Tilley Dinnerware Set| 4. Measuring Spoons | 5. Mini Cast Iron Baker Orange | 6. Magnolia Table Book | 7. Vase | 8. Plaid Hand Towel
Analog Experiences For Family AND Friends – WAHOO!!!
Our family has had to drastically shift our screentime habits due to covid and the last few months we’ve really tried to focus on no screens (except our kindles). Board games, listening to records (the kids have Brian’s old record player in their playroom) have increased and become quite the joy for us all (and make us feel less like garbage parents).

And yes, Target sells all those records – a lot of GREAT ones that are both classic and new pop. That record player is really good, too. Brian is a big fan of records because it encourages us to listen to whole albums through – for us it’s mostly The Grateful Dead, Miles Davis, and Taylor Swift.

There you are, folks. The Fall Target Launch. It’s full of great pieces for adding comfort and ease to this season with extremely affordable prices. Everyone deserves to have an inviting and comfortable home, all year round. Great job Target, and happy fall friends. xx
