Hanging Curtains All Wrong

Emily Henderson Hanging Curtains Wrong Pinterest

A pretty room with poorly hung curtains is like a beautiful, pulled-together lady wearing way ‘too-small pants’. It cheapens everything else, stands out in a jarring way, and just makes everyone feel uncomfortable. A few years back we decided to combat the problem by going through some of the biggest mistakes people make when buying and hanging curtains and with many a homeowner (and disgruntled curtain) in need we figured it was time to update the post with some new tips, as well as pull together some of our ready-made favorites in a massive roundup.

In case you missed the other design mistakes: The Generic Sofa Roundup | Rugs That Are Too Small | Painting A Small, Dark Room White | Bad Wood FinishesHow To Hang Curtains | Generic Art | Not Having A Plan | Who Pays For Design Mistakes | My Biggest Design Mistakes -And What You Can Learn From Them | When to Hire vs. DIY

So, let’s start with the curtains mistakes.

I used to do this, I hung my rod just slightly above my window frame mostly because I would buy the wrong length of curtain then as I was trying to avoid the too-short curtain (see below) I was forced to hang it lower. Now, it doesn’t ALWAYS have to be 20″ above your window, literally just under the ceiling, but go at least 1/2-2/3 the distance towards the top to help your ceilings look as high as possible. It’s not just the better way to hang your curtains but at this point we have a ‘cultural height’ of where your curtain rod line should be, the height where we as a collective people are used to seeing it, and if you get too close to the window sill, and if you have a lot of space to play with, it just stands out in your room. Lift the rod, which lifts the eye which makes your ceilings look higher and your space bigger.

What I do love, however, is how that white pillow is styled on that chair in the above/right shot. It’s all WHUT, I’m not just a pillow, I’m a diamond. And I get ladies.

Meanwhile, the most common curtain mistake is just painful to look at – the ‘too short’ curtain. The waiting for a flood curtain. It does EXACTLY what pants that are too short do – it cuts off your room (leg) in a really jarring way, making it look feel short/stubby and awkward. You have three other options – all good/legal ones to avoid this look:

1. The slight float – Less than an inch above the floor. If you want to hang your curtains without any break at all, so they hang totally straight then the float is the best option for you. It doesn’t touch the floor, but only just barely.

2. The kiss – It barely touches the floor. This is the hardest one to pull off as you need to measure SUPER accurately from the rod (and making sure to include in your measurements the rings/clips or s hooks). It is my favorite as it looks the most custom and intentional, but it is the hardest to accomplish. There is often a tiny break/bend in the curtain when it’s open that I’m totally ok with.

3. The puddle – Where it does just that, it puddles all over the floor. This is best for you romantics out there, or for those looking for a more feminine, old-world, European feel. Marie Antoinette puddled hard all over that villa, dripping with her cakes and sapphires. We just installed a couple of puddles in a baby girl’s ultra-feminine nursery and it looks BEAUTIFUL. It’s especially a good idea if/when your fabric is really high quality – either washed linen or velvet, because the more it puddles the more you can see the beautiful texture of the fabric that you probably splurged on. It should be thick and grand, not dinky little cotton curtains that will simply look accidental and way too long.

Another common mistake is not having the rod wide enough, on both sides of the window, so that your curtains are forced to be hanging partially in your window, blocking light and making the window look smaller (thus making your room feel smaller). Extend the rod at least 6-10″ on either side of the window frame (if you have the space) so that when the curtains are pushed totally open you can see almost all of the window.

The height above your sill can be similar to the space on either side of the window sill – lift and widen where you put the rod so that the window frame feels as big as possible and allows for as much light in as possible. Remember natural light is your best accessory, so let it…shine…

If you have a big window make sure to have double-wide panels on both sides of the frame. Say your window is 100″ wide and your panels are 54″ wide (standard), then SURE when they are closed they will technically block the light, but they will be taught and won’t have any softness in them. Additionally, when the curtains are open they will look really dinky and disproportionate to your grand window. You may have to buy four panels (2 on each side), we do that often. You can either have your tailor/dry cleaner sew them together OR just hang them as-is and often you can’t see the break because now they are so full and billowy.

Now with all that said, you may be asking your self how do I not be the girl wearing the too-small pants? With the help of illustrator Jonna Isaac, we have created this handy guide to hanging your curtains the very best way possible. You may have to invest in longer curtains or even more panels if you have a larger window, but otherwise hanging a curtain the right way actually costs the same as the wrong way. So please, follow this guide and save everyone the discomfort of the ‘too short’, ‘too low’, ‘too thin’ and ‘too narrow’ curtain.

Print

But where do we buy these?

Well, we’ve pulled together a roundup of our favorite readymade long curtains for you. There are very few houses that only need 84″ high curtains. It’s like the housing and curtain industries had lunch, got drunk and one of them said ‘we’ll make the standard height of newly installed windows around 6′ or 7′ high so you just go ahead and only manufacture curtains around 84″ high and they’ll all buy it and we’ll all become millionaires’. But 84″ is almost always not long enough. Annoyingly 95″ can often be too long if you have 8′ ceilings but it’s better to buy the 95″ and have them hemmed to around 90″ (which is what we usually do in that case) than to go for the 84″. Of course, I’m hoping that the heads of the world’s curtain senate are reading this post and will start implementing change, making a 90″ length as a standard size. And if you still make 72″ long curtains, go ahead and press pause on that mission. It’s a failed one and you are doing more harm to society than good.

On to my favorite long/affordable/readymade curtain options (in a variety of styles to satisfy many of you) that will hopefully solve all your problems.

1. Ivory Embroidered Adara Sleeve Top Curtains Set Of 2 | 2. Natural Tan Basketweave Panel | 3. Priya Tab Top Light Filtering Window Curtain Panel | 4. Pinstripe White/Black Curtain| 5. A lot of those are sold per panel so just make sure that you buy at least two if you need.

1. 2 Pack Velvet Curtain Panels | 2. Thea Print Linen/Cotton Rod Pocket Curtain | 3. 2 Pack Blackout Curtains | 4. 2 Pack Linen Blend Curtains | 5. Velvet Curtain Panel | 6. There needs to be a whole rod/ring conversation but I’ll just say this right now – when in doubt go simple (white, black, brass or silver), stay away from crazy curly wrought iron stuff unless you live in a Scottish Castle (or an old Hollywood home) and fancy finials are only your friend if the style of your house can handle it.

The Budget-Friendly, DIY Thanksgiving Tablescape We Are All Stealing Ideas From (I Mean, Look At It!)

It’s been a month since the loft reveal and I’m so happy to be back on here sharing another fun project with you all – my Thanksgiving tablescape! I can’t believe it’s already the holiday season… probably because it’s still 80 degrees in LA.

As an interior stylist / aspiring interior designer the holidays are the perfect opportunity to flex my creative muscles by decorating for gatherings!

This year is my partner, Jordan’s, and my first time hosting Thanksgiving dinner and honestly, I’m more focused on decorating the tablescape than cooking the actual food. Any tips on how to cook a turkey… asking for a friend.

For the tablescape, I wanted to go outside of the box and attempt some DIY’s like building a plaster dining table from scratch. My vision for the tablescape was to include both vintage and new, neutral and colorful. I love the holiday’s but I’m not one to put decorative turkeys or “Thankful” signs everywhere. (Not that those decorations aren’t cute – just not my vibe) So, I embraced the challenge to create a holiday tablescape without the obvious Thanksgiving decor. Now, let’s dive into the DIYs:

DIY Plaster Dining Table

I’ve always wanted to build my own table. Since we have a round table that sits 4 and we’re having family over, we knew we needed a table that could sit everyone. Instead of buying a fold-out table or renting one, I figured if I’m gonna build a table it’s now or never.

I decided to make a white plaster table to brighten up the space and because I love the texture of plaster. I even decided to turn our “bedroom” into a dining room for the time being. A perk of living in a loft is having enough space to rearrange freely.

Now, I’m not gonna lie, this DIY was the most difficult. I am no carpenter. Last year, I attempted to make Jordan a bench and when he picked it up it fell apart.

“What did you use to secure it?” Jordan asked. I laughed and said, “Gorilla Glue.” Clearly, not my finest DIY moment.

Anyways, this time around I got myself a screw gun and REAL screws. Look at me now! I got all the supplies (lumbar, screws, and plaster) from Home Depot for $150! I told them my cut list and they even cut the pieces for me. For measurements, I just googled “average table height” and that’s how I came up with my cut list. The table length is 8 feet long and the legs are 30’’ tall.

I used a screw gun and screwed the legs into the surface of the table. Since I was covering the table with plaster, I decided it would be easier to screw the screws from the top. Once I had it all built, I applied the plaster. I used Plaster of Paris – all you need is to add water, mix, then apply. Make sure you don’t add too much water otherwise you won’t get a thick enough consistency. It’s definitely the messiest part of this DIY, so make sure you set down a tarp. I used a plaster knife to smooth/shape the plaster how I wanted. The plaster dries pretty fast so after about an hour or two of drying I painted it white to brighten it up.

Sidenote: If you decide to make a plaster table make sure you apply a sealer after, otherwise the plaster will chip and fall right off.

DIY Hanging Flowers

This is easy and so affordable! I went to the LA flower market and got all different types of flowers. I tied bouquets with twine then hung them from the ceiling above the table. I wanted to create a mini “floral art installation.” This was my favorite part of the decorating process. I decided to do different bouquets with the same flowers to create more contrast but also have variety.

DIY Table Flower Arrangements

As I mentioned earlier, I wanted to experiment with new and vintage, neutral, and bold colors. Since I decided to do a white table with neutral plates, napkins (vintage), and runner I wanted the flowers to be bold and bright.

Flower Styling Tip: Choose a color story, select different-sized flowers, mix some of them together and have a few single-flower arrangements that look sculptural.

DIY Name Cards

I went to a local thrift shop and bought vintage glassware for under $15, then I tied name tags I stamped around the wineglass. This was easy and so cute. I also scored vintage linen napkins for 50c. Lucky day!

Glassware Styling Tip: If you don’t have cider for your Thanksgiving photoshoot, use whiskey and Coors Light. It works every time 😉

DIY Charcuterie Board

I bought wooden charcuterie boards from Crate & Barrel that were the perfect touch for my neutral and bold, vintage, and new theme I had going. A tip for charcuterie – throw an herb on the plate to add some texture/color. I usually do rosemary or thyme.

Other Tablescape Styling TipsDon’t be afraid to mix silver AND gold Play with vintage and newIt doesn’t have to be matchy-matchyTapered candles are moody and funMultiple vases with different heights add dimensionForage! Some of my favorite decorative accents are things I found on the street or on a hike. Get outside!

Dress

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season surrounded by people you love.

Stay safe and healthy!

Cheers,

Bronte

How To Make Your Bedroom Better (And Cozier)

Welcome to the next installment of “How to Make Your *insert room* Better”. The concept started out a little as a joke with our first living room post but it turned out to be pretty popular so we thought let’s keep these good times rolling! But we also get it. As a deep lover of checklists, these posts would be a dream for me. Sure there are always going things that could be added but knowing that if I did these # of things and I would have a nicer-looking bedroom… heaven.

I’ve actually been thinking a lot about my bedroom lately, despite it likely being the last room on my MOTO list. But I think a lot of people tend to put their bedroom design on the back burner because it’s mostly just where we sleep and it’s not a room that usually gets a lot of foot traffic from our guests. And if they do, phrases like “I’m so sorry, it’s such a mess” or “please don’t judge it, I’m not done decorating it yet” come tumbling out of our mouths. Well, we deseve better, no? We should have a bedroom that when we walk into it we immediately are greeted with a sense of calm. So let’s get into the 12 ways to make that happen.

1. Add A Bed Blanket (Textured Or Patterned)

Just to be clear this isn’t your average-sized throw blanket. It’s bigger and we like to style them as the top layer at the foot of a bed. They just make your bed more inviting, cozy and are an extra layer for those chilly nights. Let me show you what I mean.

photos by sara ligorria-tramp | left from: our soft yet secretly sultry downstairs guest bed + bath | right design by julie rose for ehd, from: suzanne’s bedroom reveal

Left Blanket (similar) | Right Blanket

Here we have two different neutral yet textured options. I love how in the mountain house bedroom, the green blanket is a nice bold contrast to the greige bedding. Then in Suzanne’s bedroom, the cream knit bed blanket complements the rest of the bedding but its visual texture adds so much. Plus it just looks cozy, right?!

photos by sara ligorria-tramp | left design by julie rose for ehd, from: julie’s bedroom reveal | right from: our guest room/office basement suite reveal

Left Blanket | Right Blanket

But maybe you’re a pattern person in which here are two great examples. In Julie’s bedroom on the left, she went for that awesome embroidered blanket. The pattern is bold but the colors are more muted working perfectly with the general color palette and vibe of the room. Then in Emily’s old basement guest room, she used her favorite large throw blanket/coverlet. It adds another layer of pattern that breaks up the solid blue quilt underneath. All in all, they add a ton of personality to these rooms.

2. Try The Single Long Pillow

Emily has been raving about this bedding hack for years! She (and most of us) love a bedding setup that only takes a minute to create and even less to destroy. So if you spend more time than you’d like with your decorative pillows (I always think of that scene in Along Came Polly, IYKYK) then this one is for you. Let’s keep our knives in our kitchens and make life easier and a little more modern with the single long lumbar decorative pillow.

Look at these beds and tell me that your bed-making stress level didn’t just go down 7 points. Simple and can truly translate to any style.

Faux Leather Lumbar Pillow

And in terms of color and texture mixing rules it’s always the same. Keep it within the room’s color palette and then decide if you want to play with a contrasting or complementing color to the bedding. Then you can decide if you’d prefer a pattern or a solid with a fun texture like Em did with this faux leather lumbar in her mountain house bedroom.

3. The Right Sized Rug

Ha. Did you think we wouldn’t bring this up again? We did because again it’s important. Here is our mostly official bedroom rug size rule:

RULE: Ideally your rug should have at least 24″ on all three sides of your bed. Our typical sizing rules are: for a Twin go for a 5’x8′, a Full 6’x9′, a Queen 8’x10′ and a King 9’x12′.

But of course, you also want to consider the size of your room. That’s why I’m a very big fan of taping things like rugs out before you buy.

photos by sara ligorria-tramp | left design by julie rose for ehd, from: julie’s bedroom reveal | right styled by emily bowser, from: how to design your bedroom for the best night sleep (+ introducing target’s new casaluna line)

We like rugs to be on the larger side because you don’t want most of your beautiful rug hiding under the bed. We recommend placing at having at least half if not two-thirds under the bed. That way when you get out of bed your feet are landing on the rug and not the cold floor.

Hot Tip

If you have a rug you LOVE but it's not quite large enough, an affordable way to remedy that is by getting a large jute rug and layering them like Julie did in her old bedroom.

photo by tessa neustadt | design by ginny macdonald and melanie burstin for ehd | from: griffith park primary bedroom

If you plan on having a bench at the end of your bed make sure that your rug is large enough to be able to go high enough under your bed AND clear all four legs of the bench with some room in front. At least 12″.

I promise that getting a rug that is the right size will make your bedroom look well designed and easier on the eyes:)

4. Get A Functional Nightstand

We get the draw of a beautiful pedestal nightstand. They are elegant and super pretty. But you know what they aren’t??? Functional. Most of us are “collectors”. Collectors of hair ties, books, magazines, electronics, and if you don’t have a least one drawer you will have a nightstand full of clutter. None of us want that.

photos by sara ligorria-tramp | left from: design by julie rose for ehd, from: suzanne’s bedroom reveal | right from: our soft yet secretly sultry downstairs guest bed + bath

Left Nightstand | Right Nightstand (unavailable)

Above are nightstands that have drawers only. They are beautiful, simple, and give you enough storage to keep that nightstand clutter-free thus stress-free.

left photo by tessa neustadt, design by ginny macdonald and melanie burstin for ehd, from: griffith park primary bedroom | right photo by design by emily bowser, from: emily bowser’s bedroom reveal

Left Nightstand | Right Nightstand

Here we have two nightstands that have a drawer and a little cubby/shelf. These are great if you love books and/or a styling moment. You can keep the essentials on the top and then throw a cute stack of books naked or in a tray with a bowl on top to collect any other little bedside essentials.

5. Don’t Skip The Window Treatments

You might be thinking to yourself, “Come on Jess, everyone has window treatments in their bedroom.” I am here to tell you that is sadly not the case. And look, if you hate the look of a curtain or a shade then to each their own. But if you are just rocking the metal or plastic blinds that came in your rental or just haven’t gotten around to picking a window treatment out of lack of time or indecisiveness then this is your sign to change that. Every time I have put up curtains, it transformed the room. All of a sudden the room got tall and so much cozier. They are SUCH a room game-changer.

left photo by keyanna bowen, design by emily henderson and keyanna bowen, from: all the details of the primary suite at the real simple home | right photo by sara ligorria-tramp, design by julie rose for ehd, from: julie’s bedroom reveal

However, curtains are not the only option. Roman shades are such a pretty way to give you privacy, add texture (and a pattern if you want) but be a little less visually heavy than a curtain.

But remember that if you want blackout shades they are going to need to be lined and there will likely still be “light leak” from the sides. Just a little food for thought.

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: the new (luxury) bed in a bag with brooklinen

So yes, curtains bring a bit more “drama” (which I kinda love) but they are also much easier to buy “off the rack” if you are needing or wanting to be more on the budget-conscious side. Oh and come back tomorrow afternoon for an updated version of our “Hanging Curtains All Wrong” post.

6. Always Have 2 Different Types Of Light Sources (Ideally Warm Light)

Lighting is SO important for ambiance and you are going to want to have at least two options so that you can create whatever mood you want. Also, DIMMERS! Install them if you don’t have them (and make sure your bulbs are dimmer compatible).

So when I say two light sources I’m talking a pendant and a table lamp, or a table lamp and a floor lamp, or a pendant and a sconce, etc, etc. Of course, if you want more get yourself more! But something I’d highly recommend is for the majority of them to be “warm”. That means the actual type of lightbulb. We don’t love a “bright white” or “cool white” because they’re normally very harsh. It also means to have that light be filtered by some kind of shade or covering. Here is a post I wrote about it last year. But let’s get into these examples:

photos by sara ligorria-tramp | from: portland project primary bedroom

Example A: Two table lamps on nightstands with white shades for a nice glow by the bed, one floor lamp with a tall white shade for a nice glow near the seating area, and one large chandelier. Lots of options for any mood you could be in!

photos by tessa neustadt | design by brady tolbert | from: brady’s bedroom reveal

Example B: This room doesn’t have a ceiling light so Brady made sure to give himself FOUR different light options. One large and one small sconce, one table lamp, and one floor lamp. Most of his lighting is task/directional which can definitely give off a cool sexy vibe when it’s nighttime.

7. A Mirror To Bounce Light Around

So easy and so effective. It will make your room feel bigger, brighter, and can be pretty useful when you need to check out that face or outfit before heading out. Plus there are a bunch of ways to style them…

left photo by sara ligorria-tramp, design by julie rose for ehd, from: suzanne’s bedroom reveal | right photo by keyanna bowen, design by malcolm simmons, from: malcolm’s primary bedroom reveal

Left Mirror | Right Mirror

Let’s first take about the full-length mirror. This isn’t just beautiful and functional but having a large-scale “art piece” like this will help to give more dimension to your space. To free up floor space, you can hang it on your wall or simply lean it if space is less of an issue. If you are leaning it, make sure you secure it. This is coming from someone who deals with earthquakes but accidents also happen and a broken mirror and/or person would be a very big bummer.

left photo by sara ligorria-tramp, from: our guest room/office basement suite reveal | right photo by tessa neustadt, design by ginny macdonald and melanie burstin for ehd, from: eclectic traditional bedroom reveal

Left Mirror (vintage) | Right Mirror

Now maybe you don’t have space or just want something on the smaller size. Great! Hang a wall mirror over a dresser (or lean it on top), do something fun like Em did in her old basement and hang one in front of a bookshelf, or even just in a gallery wall. Dealer’s choice, my friends. It’s basically functional art. But now let’s get to the more traditional type of art.

8. Personalize With Some Art

I think art should be in absolutely every room. Art is such an easy way to really make your home unique to you. But in a bedroom, I would just make sure that the art you pick is on the calm and soothing side. Whatever that means to you. We love landscapes, simple line drawings, botanicals, you get it. Also really consider the colors. Ask yourself what’s going to bring you a sense of peace and relaxation.

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: emily bowser’s multipurpose room reveal

Here is Bowser’s beautiful guest room and she chose this really pretty and serene diptych from Minted. We really love a diptych or triptych (3 pieces) because they look great, give symmetry to a wall and make picking out multiple pieces of art a lot easier.

photo by sara ligorria-tramp, styled by emily bowser, from: modern organic bedroom | photo by tessa neustadt, design by melanie burstin, from: mel’s new place makes Us want to declutter immediately

And here’s more! You can use your art as a second headboard (those are very cool and vintage) or create a cool tonal gallery wall like Mel did in her last place.

The possibilities are endless, just make sure you do it… I’m serious. Here’s a post to help some more.

9. A Place To Sit Is Really Nice

This one is definitely a luxury. Having enough space for a bench or chair has only happened a couple of times in my life (and am VERY excited that one of those times is now). So I get if you don’t. For those of you lucky enough to have a little extra room to maybe have a reading chair or a bench to be able to sit on to tie your shoes, let’s get into it!

left photo by sara ligorria-tramp, design by emily bowser, from: emily bowser’s bedroom reveal | right photo by veronica crawford, from: our bedroom update (also how i feel about having a tv in the bedroom)

Let’s first start with benches since so many of them can also double as extra storage (YES!). First, let’s talk about Emily’s old bedroom on the right. Since she had enough space, she placed her bench at the end of her bed (remember the rule about the rug) and with the fun patterned fabric added some great dimension, and of course, storage. Now in Emily Bowser’s bedroom, it would have been a bit tight for her bench to be at the end of her bed so she basically created a bench seat on an empty wall giving her (and her cat Puck) a place to sit and store things. So yes, bedroom benches don’t always been to be at the foot of the bed.

photos by sara ligorria-tramp | left photo: styled by emily bowser, from: how to design your bedroom for the best night sleep (+ introducing target’s new casaluna line) | right photo: design by julie rose for ehd, from: suzanne’s bedroom reveal

My other ultimate bedroom seat is a plush reading chair. I had one in high school and it was the best. Bedroom corners are made for reading nooks so just make sure the chair is comfy and the coziness will be overwhelming.

10. Plant(s) Are Important

I accidentally left out plants in the living room post so I was NOT going to make that mistake twice because of course plants make every space better.

left photo by keyanna bowen, design by malcolm simmons, from: malcolm’s primary bedroom reveal | right photo by sara ligorria-tramp, from: mountain house primary bedroom

We are big real tree fans and don’t turn our noses up to faux ones. So whatever kind you prefer go treat yourself if you can. They just bring in life and happiness and a little bit of nature is good for the soul. Plus they look GREAT as you can see in these photos. But if a tree isn’t possible due to space or budget, a small plant is just as wonderful. Pick a pretty planter and I promise seeing that little guy will make you and your room feel better.

11. Make Things Prettier With A Tray

Another EHD styling go-to is a tray. Grab one for the top of your dresser and then corral a few of your beautiful things. It just looks like you are put together and have great style;)

left photo by design by emily bowser, from: emily bowser’s bedroom reveal | right photo by veronica crawford | from: our bedroom update (also how i feel about having a tv in the bedroom)

They can be more on the functional side like both Emilys did in the photos above, corraling things like candles, reed diffusers, jewelry, etc. See how much more intentional it looks than if they just had those items sitting on the dresser??

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: 14 rules for how we style the perfect bedroom (+ 3 new reveals)

But maybe you don’t have a lot that you want on your dresser but using a tray for a couple of vases and cute boxes again just gives your space that little extra something. Plus it’s a great way to add another material and/or pattern which will make it feel more layered and yes, cozy.

12. Yes, A Candle

Warmth, light, AND good smells. It’s wildly simple but can completely change the air in your room.

left photo by sara ligorria-tramp, styled by emily bowser, from: target’s new threshold collection is hitting the “elevated prairie” trend hard and good | right photo by tessa neustadt, from: master bedroom refresh with parachute home

Candles and even reed diffusers are the superstars of “cozy” to me and when I finally finish my bedroom in the future or get a safe surface you bet I am getting a great candle. Of course, be careful and if you are reading in bed maybe set an alarm to make sure you don’t sleep with it burning all night.

Honorable Mention: Fresh Sheets and Pillow Covers

This way one Em thought was kind of a no-brainer but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be mentioned…honorably. We don’t support tossing away your sheets and pillow covers if you still like them. But if you are in need of a fresh set, we can’t tell you enough how you will feel absolutely brand new. You will 100% feel like your bedroom looks better.

Hope this was at minimum a helpful reminder that even doing a couple of things on this list will make you feel better in your bedroom (that is if you don’t already love it:)) Let me know if you have any quick, easy fixes of your own!

Love you, mean it.

All The IKEA Cabinet Front Companies You Should Know Before Renovating Your Kitchen

Happy Monday everyone! Hope you all had a fabulous Halloween yesterday and hopefully feeling fresh. We’re talking about something awfully fun: IKEA CABINET HACK. But the best part? You don’t have to do too much ‘figuring out’ with this hack…these companies do all the heavy lifting for you!! It’s. Awesome.

Before we start let’s chat about some options you have for cabinetry when renovating a kitchen. The most expensive kind of cabinets you can put into your home are fully custom cabinets (which gives you THE MOST flexibility and customization). It’s a great thing to splurge on if you have the budget and there are some awesome companies that do fully custom cabinetry, like Unique Kitchens and Baths (which Emily is using for the farm), or you can ask the GC for your project if they do custom cabinetry (which is very common). So, those are the most splurgy, then the cheapest option would be to either a. paint your cabinets if they’re salvageable (obviously) or b. get stock cabinetry (VERY affordable & with the quickest turnaround because they are mass-produced and ready to ship). One of our FAVORITE budget-conscious options, however, is the IKEA cabinet box paired with the custom cabinet front. This way, your kitchen can be much more personalized and customized, while still keeping the cost down. There are SO many cool companies that do this now, and we’re excited to share all the awesome options with you in this post. Consider this your one-stop IKEA cabinet front shop.

Semihandmade

We LOVE Semihandmade over here and have used them many times before. Velinda used them in this client’s custom kitchen on a builder-grade budget. We also reached out to Semihandmade themselves to get some more info on their product. Here’s the Q&A below:

photos by sara ligorria-tramp | styled by emily edith bowser | from: velinda’s first freelance client reveal: molding the ‘builder-grade budget’ + where they saved & splurged1. Can you tell us about your cabinet assembly?

Semihandmade doors are made to fit most IKEA kitchen, bath, and media systems. You buy the cabinets from them (IKEA), and the fronts from us (Semihandmade).

2. Can a customer request a custom cabinet paint color?

Customers can purchase our DIY doors and paint the doors themselves for a truly customized look.

3. What is unique about your cabinetry that you’d like our readers to know?

If you are renovating on a budget, nothing elevates the look of a kitchen or bathroom project more than Semihandmade doors paired with IKEA bases. It’s the ultimate design-on-a-dime combination.

4. Do you specialize in a specific style of cabinetry? What styles do you offer?

Semihandmade has both traditional and modern door styles. Shaker doors are typically associated with traditional looks and come in a multitude of color options. Our Supermatte Slab, Beaded, and Quarterline collections have a more modern feel and are available in various finishes. Classic Walnut and our rich woodgrains provide a whole different look, and can be either traditional or mod depending on the treatment, surfaces and hardware paired with them. There are literally options for everyone — 45 in all!

5. What is the typical pricing for your cabinetry?

Depending on the style, Semihandmade doors range from equal in price to IKEA, to 30-40% more.

6. Are your products sustainably made?

Semihandmade doors are made in the United States, and meet or exceed all mandated government standards.

Kokeena

Sara used Kokeena cabinets for her kitchen, here’s what she had to say: “First, their panels are all wood, and you can really feel the quality when you touch them–my dad was super impressed (it’s hard to impress my dad). Secondly, they’ll send you cabinet fronts painted whatever color you want. I choose one of their pre-selected colors, but if you have a dream color in mind they’ll make you cabinet fronts in that color (rather than sending you unpainted cabinet fronts that you then have to paint yourself). Working with them has been nothing short of a pleasure, and it’s just nice to work with small companies run by awesome people.”

photos by sara ligorria-tramp | styled by emily edith bowser | from: sara’s kitchen update

Lots of good things from Sara, now let’s hear from the brand themselves:

1. Can you tell us about your cabinet assembly?

All of our doors come grain-matched, bored, and ready to be installed on IKEA’s SEKTION, AKURUM, PAX & GODMORGON. We also offer hardware from our pop-up shop. Hardware shouldn’t be an afterthought when installing new cabinetry.

2. Can a customer request a custom cabinet paint color?

Yes! We’ll send you a sample for your sign-off before painting your project, so you can make sure it’s perfect.

3. What is unique about your cabinetry that you’d like our readers to know?

We started Kokeena because we love design and we wanted to bring that love of design to everyone. Our mission is to help homeowners and designers who care deeply about design create the kind of kitchen or bathroom or any room in the house that they or their clients can fall in love with over and over again. Using IKEA’s system as the foundation, paired with high-quality, well-designed doors from Kokeena allows our customers to do just that—with the look of custom cabinets coupled with cost savings.

4. Do you specialize in a specific style of cabinetry? What styles do you offer?

We offer numerous styles and collections. We have painted wood doors (collections: The Minimalist, Slab Door, Modern White Paint), real wood (collections: The Woodsman, Panel Door, Plain Sawn Walnut, Natural Finish), the standard (Slab Door, Rift White Oak or CVG Fir, Natural Finish), the craftsman (Panel Door, Clear Vertical Grain Fir, Natural Finish), textured laminate (The Slabtown, Slab Door, Textured Laminate), and townsend (the newest from Kokeena, the Townsend Home Collection features an organic selection of nature-inspired neutrals. A curated collection of blue and green hues and their go-to color staples for kitchen cabinetry).

5. What is the typical pricing for your cabinetry?

It depends on the project and project size. If you’re just kicking tires and want to know what things cost, it’s a good idea to start by downloading our price sheet or our estimator Excel worksheet.  If you have general questions while you work through your project, please email us at talk@kokeena.com.

6. Are your products sustainably made?

Absolutely. Kokeena is committed to sustainable business practices that benefit the consumer as well as the planet. While our practices and methods change and evolve over time, what’s constant is our dedication to sourcing products and materials that allow us to deliver uncompromising quality without compromising sustainability. Kokeena specifies low-impact paints and finishes.

We are committed not only to the use of sustainably harvested wood, but also to sustainable practices in materials used during production. Steps are taken to minimize wasted material during the making of your doors. Many of our doors use wood grain veneers glued to a green ply or fiber backing. The glues used by Kokeena in this process are low-VOC.

Reform

Velinda used Reform for her client’s kitchen remodel and had some awesome things to say: “If we’re gonna talk about saving on materials, we’ve gotta talk IKEA ‘hacks’. Instead of going with custom, the outdated/not-ideally functioning kitchen cabinets were replaced with IKEA, but the door & drawer faces were a bit more sublime. Reform offered faces for IKEA that were not only reasonably priced, but had a style that actually completed the vintage-inspired look (and cut down the need/expense for hardware thanks to integration and push-to-open features!). We were obsessed with how the flat panels of their Basis design were anything but boring due to wood detailing and two-tone pulls. The linoleum vibes (and color options) were perfect for this design. The colors we selected were Pistachio for the base and white for the upper cabinets. Reform established the look of this kitchen… hiding the budget boxes below beautifully.”

| styled by emily edith bowser | from: “a trend forward kitchen remodel on a budget”

Here’s a little blurb from the brand along with our Q&A:

“As a natural extension of Reform’s dedicated focus on quality, Reform has developed their own patented cabinet system. Based on widely accepted market standards and measurements, the Reform cabinets comprise an innovative clicking-technology that creates a quick and uncomplicated user experience.”

1. Can you tell us about your cabinet assembly?

Ready-to-assemble – and without any tools or screws!

2. Can a customer request a custom cabinet paint color?

Unfortunately not at the moment – maybe one day if we’ll get enough requests on this 🙂

3. What is unique about your cabinetry that you’d like our readers to know?

The cabinets are assembled through the simple act of clicking them together – without the need for tools or screws. The cabinets are made from high-quality materials, offering a solid inner foundation for the modern outer design, and they’re just as durable and robust as cabinets that require screw assembly. They come in black, white and oak laminate, and the entire system is modular, which means that Reform can accommodate the unique and specific requirements of any given kitchen space.

5. What is the typical pricing for your cabinetry?

Starts at $90 for the cheapest cabinets and then up – depending on material (wood is more expensive), sizes, etc.

6. Are your products sustainably made?

The Reform cabinets feature MFC, a TSCA/CARB-certified material, which has been produced through sustainable and responsible methods. The leading edges are 1 mm ABS, and the side, top and bottom boards have a robust thickness of 18 mm while the back panel has been fortified with additional thickness. As an added benefit, the cabinets are manufactured as flatpack items, which optimizes space management during shipping and makes transportation more sustainable.

BOXI by Semihandmade

Albie used BOXI by semihandmade for her kitchen reno and loved them. Here’s what she had to say “As I dug into the exterior options I would have with Semihandmade, I was excited to discover that they would be expanding to offer their own cabinetry with BOXI. The idea of getting boxes from one vendor and fronts from another vendor may save us a ton…or it may not. Mixing and matching and playing around with the different ideas was very reminiscent of my permutations math lessons from middle school.”

“Working with BOXI would minimize how many components to manage — cabinets from A, fronts from B — without compromising the custom options that were on our wishlist.”

design by albie k. buabeng | photo by ellie lillstrom | from: reveal alert: how albie designed the hygge inspired luxe kitchen of her dreams (+ what she learned along the way)1. Can you tell us about your cabinet assembly?

BOXI cabinets come pre-assembled and ready to install.

2. Can a customer request a custom cabinet paint color?

BOXI cabinets are available in eight curated finishes. Painted or paint-ready doors are something we hope to offer in the future.

3. What is unique about your cabinetry that you’d like our readers to know?

BOXI is the first and only American-built cabinet system for every room in the house that can be ordered from the comfort of your sofa. With BOXI, you can fulfill your renovation dreams without the high cost of custom millwork (and never visit a Big Box store in the process)!

4. Do you specialize in a specific style of cabinetry? What styles do you offer?

As with Semihandmade, the BOXI line includes a mix of traditional Shaker doors, contemporary Slab styles, and a few warm wood tones. We’re especially excited about our matte black Peppercorn cabinets — with a slim pencil edge — a big hit since our spring 2021 launch.

5. What is the typical pricing for your cabinetry?

BOXI cabinets are an affordable alternative to higher-priced semi-custom and custom cabinets. Depending on the size of your project, a BOXI kitchen can cost anywhere from $6,000- $20,000

6. Are your products sustainably made?

BOXI cabinets are built in the Pacific Northwest with parts supplied by the best manufacturers in the US and abroad. Customers should feel good knowing that BOXI doors are made from discarded plastic bottles, or PET, which is a durable surface film that is 100% recyclable.

Nieu Cabinet Doors

The photos below are a before and after of Reverve Home‘s Cabinet fronts from Nieu Cabinet Doors. Nieu told us “By using any of the IKEA cabinet boxes and the made-to-order cabinet doors from Nieu, you can have the bespoke kitchen of your dreams, without breaking the bank. The cost of the cabinet fronts was just over $2,000. One of the best parts about using Nieu Cabinet Doors is the savings from ordering them direct and installing them yourself!” Other designers/DIYers such as Angela Rose Home have used them too, and have had great things to say.

photos by reverve home via nieu cabinet doors1. Can you tell us about your cabinet assembly?

We provide custom cabinet doors for cabinet refacing and IKEA cabinets. We manufacture made-to-order painted cabinet doors, drawer faces, cover panels & trim, dovetail drawer boxes and floating shelves, and provide hinges and drawer glides. We do not at this time make full cabinet boxes. All of our products are 100% custom made and are ready to install on existing cabinets, or substitute into your install in place of IKEA fronts.

2. Can a customer request a custom cabinet paint color?

Yes, we offer custom paint options for a small additional fee, provided that customers select a Sherwin Williams color. Each of our 14 standard colors has been designer-curated to make the process of choosing a color easy! For customers interested in saving cost or painting themselves, they can choose to order their products raw (entirely unpainted), or primed only and finish as they choose on-site!

3. What is unique about your cabinetry that you’d like our readers to know?

We pride ourselves on providing the highest quality products at a DIY-friendly price, with every product made-to-order. We deliver custom, luxury home level products at an affordable price to homeowners who value quality and craftsmanship. The unique offering of our custom-made doors allows customers to keep their existing cabinet boxes but transform the look entirely, often for 50-60% less than the cost of a full kitchen gut and remodel. You can also integrate existing and new cabinetry by using one consistent door style to make it match – for example when adding an island or pantry cabinet storage. Or, glam up your IKEA kitchen with custom products, we make each and every door (yes even for the IKEA system) custom to order, so you CAN have your dream kitchen, now!

design by rashida banks | photos by keyanna bowen | from: rashida’s totally transformed kitchen reveal (that includes one of our favorite “new classic” kitchen trends)4. Do you specialize in a specific style of cabinetry? What styles do you offer?

We specialize in painted cabinet doors and offer 16 door styles in 14 designer-curated colors. For the ever-popular shaker cabinet doors, we offer 10 variations of the timeless shaker to suit every design taste from ultra-modern to traditional and provide a space that looks and feels completely custom.

5. What is the typical pricing for your cabinetry?

Our products range in price to suit all budgets and DIY skill levels starting at $11.43/sq ft for cabinet doors. The average kitchen for new doors and drawer faces typically costs around $2,200 USD.

6. Are your products sustainably made?

All of our products are CARB2 compliant, made from MDF which is a recycled wood product. Cabinet refacing inherently enables sustainability by keeping your existing cabinet boxes and just replacing the doors and drawer faces, so the process reduces waste from home improvements.

Koak Cabinets

Koak cabinets have a variety of different styles to choose from – so you can really personalize your kitchen. Here’s what they had to say in our Q&A:

photo via koak design1. Can you tell us about your cabinet assembly?

Our doors are ready to assemble. We make them with the same pre-drilling as IKEA does. So they are easy to install.

2. Can a customer request a custom cabinet paint color?

Yes, we can paint the doors in any RAL color.

3. What is unique about your cabinetry that you’d like our readers to know?

We use real massive oak instead of veneer or 3 layers oak what most companies use. We believe in the natural beauty of massive oak.

4. Do you specialize in a specific style of cabinetry? What styles do you offer?

Because we have many different colours and types of wood, you can actually create any style you like. The worktop and handles also contribute to the style of the kitchen.

5. What is the typical pricing for your cabinetry?

Each size of front has its own price, but for a small kitchen the price starts at €1.200 for oak. We also have some price examples on our site.

6. Are your products sustainably made?

Yes, our fronts have the FSC quality mark. In addition, the fronts are also manufactured in our own workshop and can last a lifetime.

Dunsmuir Cabinets

Dunsmuir cabinets is another great company to consider if you’re looking to remodel your kitchen with a semi-custom option. They specialize in custom cabinet colors, so if there’s something specific you’re looking for check them out. Here’s what they had to say about their product:

photography by charmaine david via dwell1. Can you tell us about your cabinet assembly?

Its Semi-Custom, modular and may be DIY

2. Can a customer request a custom cabinet paint color?

There are 4,500 Custom Paint Colors, it’s our specialty.  See the first selection on our Materials Page.

3. What is unique about your cabinetry that you’d like our readers to know?

All Commercial Quality and Material Specifications at Residential Prices — and it’s beautiful.

4. Do you specialize in a specific style of cabinetry? What styles do you offer?

Largely slab doors, and appliance fronts for fully integrated contemporary kitchen designs.

5. What is the typical pricing for your cabinetry?

All ranges of pricing from IKEA pricing to high-end custom $2K painted fronts with integrated pulls.

6. Are your products sustainably made?

They are absolutely sustainable and environmentally safe, with zero VOCs and zero urea formaldehyde.  This is our first requirement: https://www.dcabinets.com/about-us/green

For more information check out our web page under Our Products/Materials/Pulls: www.dcabinets.com and our online Design Estimator found by clicking ‘Start Designing.’ At Dunsmuir Cabinets, you may create your own design estimates and alternates — it’s fully automated.

Superfront Cabinets

While we haven’t had personal, first-hand experience using Superfront, we think they’re incredibly beautiful AND have a wonderfully sustainable method that we definitely approve of. Here’s what the brand had to say about their awesome product:

via superfront1. Can you tell us about your cabinet assembly?

Our products are “ready-to assemble” and arrive in a flat-pack, just like the Ikea products. All doors & drawer fronts are predrilled for hinges which make them very easy to assemble.

2. Can a customer request a custom cabinet paint color?

Yes, they can – and from November 4 it will be super easy to order a custom color from the NCS scale consisting of 1,950 colors! You select the colour option “NCS” on each product and then enter your selected NCS code at checkout. There is an initial cost for these orders and the production time for orders with custom NCS is 1-3 weeks longer than the regular production time.

3. What is unique about your cabinetry that you’d like our readers to know?

Superfront is a design company rather than a production company (which is often the case for Ikea hack companies) and therefore we always strive for a unique design expression rather than creating something generic. Also, we have decided to only collaborate with wood producers that are FSC certified to minimize the impact on the environment. FSC means that forestry has taken place in a responsible manner – both from an environmental and a human point of view.

4. Do you specialize in a specific style of cabinetry? What styles do you offer?

We always strive to create timeless and unique designs. We believe this is key when saving our planet is priority. This is also why we decided to start a company where circularity is built into our business model (making it possible for people to epicycle their existing Ikea cabinets!). Our lacquered doors with routed patterns has become a bit of our design signum as it is unique yet very timeless in terms of patterns. Earlier this year we also launched our Wood Collection consisting of 6 different colors and 2 different designs of wood veered doors – one plain and one we’ve named “Vertical” which has lines of this door make us think of those sleek bars with ribbed details in solid wood that you can see in luxurious, architecturally designed hotels.

5. What is the typical pricing for your cabinetry?

Our lacquered doors have a starting price from $36 Euro while the doors from the Wood Collection have a starting price at $50 Euro.

6. Are your products sustainably made?

We only use water-based lacquer instead of the more common type of lacquer containing polypropylene. Water-based lacquer is more durable as other types of lacquer and more environmentally friendly. Also, the MDF we use has the highest possible environmental MDF classification if one also takes the service life of the material into account. In the end, this means that the MDF we use will make the smallest carbon footprint possible. All our doors and drawer fronts are produced in Sweden.

So that’s all for this post – we hope this was helpful and that you are more informed going into a VERY important and permanent decision within your kitchen reno. Have a wonderful rest of your Monday! HAPPY NOVEMBER! xx

The Hallow-Link Up: Emily’s New Favorite Kitchen Mat, Ryann’s VERY Pretty Faux Branches, And Our Halloween Costumes From Years Past (Yup, Photos Included)

HAPPY HALLOWEEN FOLKS! We hope you’re ready to get spooky & are ready for all the tricks and treats coming your way today (or if you’re recovering from a shindig yesterday – we’re here for you). It is a school night after all. Guys, we LOVE Halloween over here so we wanted to give you something a little special…some EHD team Halloween costumes!! You’ll have to wait until the end of the post (unless you scroll and cheat now) but we thought it would be fun to show our favorite costumes from years past to get everyone in the spooky spirit. What are you (or did you) dress up as this year?? We’d love to know your costumes in the comments! NOW LET’S MONSTER MASH PARTY PEEPS:

This week’s home tour HAD to be Vanessa Hudgens’s Los Feliz estate that came out on Architectural Digest this week. This totally romantic Parisian home is chock full of gorgeousness, but we’re specifically in awe about that sexy black bathroom (we definitely would not mind taking a bath in that tub). And while we chat a lot about interiors, this exterior is totally the star. Check out the space and let us know your thoughts xx

From Emily: My friend Max has filled a hole – these cult-favorite House of Noa kitchen mats have a few new patterns that he’s designed and they are AWESOME. They are cushy, wipeable, super kid/pet friendly, made in America and extremely comfortable underfoot (near a sink or in the bathroom, obviously). And they come in a ton of sizes. He dropped one off yesterday and I was very impressed. I got the Cabin Stripe pattern, but others are really classic and cute, too.

From Albie: Nearly 3 years ago my mom told me she’d be sending me a lotion & body wash set from Bath & Body Works. I didn’t think anything of it even though she swore up & down that I’d absolutely love em. Shame on me for ever doubting my mom because 3 years later, I am positively still obsessed with the lotion & body wash — the “stress relief” eucalyptus scent of their aromatherapy collection. The entire collection includes other scents (i.e. for sleep & energy) and the assortment has definitely grown in the past couple of years, but I am still a eucalyptus girl through and through. The packaging is so pretty aka countertop ready (it’s the little things) and I find that they last a super long time, which really speaks to the quality. Now that I’m sharing it with y’all, I should probably go ahead a snag a few so I’m fully stocked before things sell out… especially with the holiday season around the bend.

From Ryann: Reporting live from my MOTO photshoot: Emily bowser brought this faux berry plant by Studio McGee to style with and I am obsessed. Both Mallory and I thought it was real FOR REAL. It’s so good and looks really natural and photographs super well. 10/10!!

From Mallory: I’ve had an apple watch that I wear every day for quite some time now and I LOVE IT. BUT I forget to charge it all the time because I only have 2 plugs by my nightstand…one for my lamp and one for my phone. Plus my AirPods are just constantly dead because there’s no way I remember to plug in those too into a separate outlet. I recently saw my sister had this charging station, and I was like huh that’s pretty smart (and it’s portable). I ordered the same one in black (she has rose gold which is also cute) and it was the best $30 I have ever spent. Life. is. good.

Also From Mallory: My favorite heels are 50% off! I bought them in pink last year and wore them all spring/summer. Now that it’s offseason it’s time to snag them I guess 🙂

Also Also From Mal: This deodorant is $5 off right now and while it may be pricey for deodorant…this stuff WORKS and smells AMAZING. My mom turned me onto the stuff and it’s the only thing that’s ever worked for my smelly pits (might’ve been TMI but ya know. Women’s deodorant that works is hard to find am I wrong???)

From Caitlin: VERY big fan of the back and general fit of this mockneck sweater dress. It feels very Shiv Roy (you know, if Shiv Roy was on a budget and could only spend $70 on a dress) and it almooooost makes me wish I worked in a business casual office and/or lived somewhere where it’s not 80 in the middle of winter. ALMOST.

Also From Caitlin: This is a long read, but it feels like a good one for anyone who’s currently parenting a teen girl. This part is what really got me: “Case in point: Kendall Jenner recently adapted the persona of a tastemaker, someone in possession of “high consecration” or “high status” tastes. Posing alongside trendy experimental fiction and poetry books selected by her agent Ashleah Gonzales, Jenner traffics in male attention, gratuitously decorates her home with artifacts she’s brought back from Art Basel and plays old songs on Zaza World, her very own Apple Radio show. What a difference from five years ago, in her Vogue 73 Questions, when the model cited “Marley and Me” and “The Notebook” as films she likes and Tupac as her ‘spirit animal.’ But can we blame her, when it’s no longer enough to be pretty and rich? Now, there’s pressure to be interesting, too…” I’m SO GLAD I didn’t have to grow up worrying this much about how I’m presenting myself or how I’m perceived by others. WOOF.

Speaking of teens… From Jess: Anyone who has ever needed to buy a bra remembers the first one. It’s both exciting, intimidating, and pretty awkward. But guess who has come to solve that problem? Two women who have been there and decided to start a company called Apricotton. So now if you or you have a tween or teen who is in need of a bra, this awesome company makes “the first bra” shopping experience WAY more comfortable and they have designed bras specifically for a young teen’s body type. It actually gets cooler. These bras will actually “grow” as they grow. So no need to buy a new bra as soon as they continue to develop. I just think this is just an incredible service that I wish was around when I was needing my first bra. Also, their blog has SO MANY really awesome posts for tweens and teens that I also wish I had access to back then. All in all, I’m a huge fan so go check them out!

Also From Jess: So there was a little shoot at my house is past week (not my living room yet) and Bowser brought over this incredible large tray/platter that is also on clearance right now! It looked so beautiful in the shots and I honestly think it would work with any style for say a coffee table, credenza/dresser, food/drinks, basically anywhere. It’s both special but neutral. If you need one go check it out!

Okay now onto some fun costumes:

Emilyemily and fam as unicorns and dinosaurs (the kids picked it…clearly)The EHD TeamMallorymallory and chase as lucille ball and desi arnaz (this was last weekend!!)Jessleft: 1997 juliet from (romeo + juliet) her mom made this whole costume | right: 2009 zombie sleeping beauty – thrifted dress, everything else is diyRyann left: 2000 a very wrinkled princess costume (this very well could have been a regular day playing dress up lol) | right: 2002 a very creepy vampire – I remember LOVING this costume and thinking I nailed the makeup hahaCaitlinall of my historic photos are buried on the east coast, so here i am dressed as the sleepytime tea bear (tragically, not steve zissou) last night. happy halloween, friends!!!

My Favorite 2021 Fashion Styling Hacks/Trends – A Step By Step How To Make Your Comfortable Clothes Look Like You Still Care

I feel like there is a hole in the market for fashion inspiration for normal people, or more like people who care just a little about looking stylish on an everyday basis but don’t necessarily want to stand out at school pick-up or when running errands. We simply want to be comfortable, but not look schlubby or lame when/if we leave the house in our comfys. And most of us aren’t models so we don’t feel comfortable with the crazy trends that often just look dumb unless you nail it (good for you if you do!). You saw my ‘fall’ uniform a couple of weeks ago but this pulls out what I find to be the fastest and easiest way to ‘edge up’ anything comfortable and basic. Not a fashion guru over here and shooting this made me LOL a lot. I used to live next to Suzanne, who works at The Great and just always dresses effortlessly cool and would help me, but now I’m on my own. Listen, I’m trying and I’m not sure I nailed it, but we can all see for ourselves below (and also WHO really cares?)

The Sock And Sleeve POP

Sweatshirt | Striped Shirt | Jeans (similar) | Beanie | Boots | Socks (no longer available)

For the first outfit, we have a classic quarter zip, and my favorite jeans that I’ve had forever. But I can’t leave the house like this so here’s what I do – it’s a real hilarious step by step:

Put on a patterned sock, one foot at a time. I like to start with my right foot, but please honor your own personal preferences. Roll up the pants so you get just a pop of a green striped crew sock. The pattern is crucial – not just a solid dark sock please. Grab boots that are fitted at the ankle (like my Doctor Martens)1/2 tuck the sweatshirt into your waistband. Duh. Reach into your sleeve and gently pull your long-sleeved striped shirt out so you can see 3-4″ of pattern. No more or you could be arrested. Shove your sweatshirt (with shirt) up almost to your elbow. Add a textured beanie so you don’t have to do your hair, one that has a bit subtle pattern for extra credit.

The Striped Crew Sock + Duck Boot + Tailored Wool Look

Ok, so you have your black stretch pants that you wear every day whether or not you work out, and we all have a slouchy sweatshirt. But you want to go to the farmers market and you might run into followers/readers. What do you do?? This?

Boots | Coat (similar) | Sweatshirt (similar)

I have worn this so many times, guys. Dropping off kids, popping by the farm, over to Fred Meyers. Here’s how you do it:

Take tall crew socks (these are mens via Target) that have a retro stripe. Sure you could also do a different pattern but it shouldn’t be the star. (see above for more options)Place them OVER your stretch pants (I KNOW, I KNOW CRAZY) like leg warmers, then slouch them down. You need to be able to see the stripe, but it shouldn’t be straight or too tight. Throw on your duck boots (the “it boot” of the year). I got mine from L.L. Bean and I LOVE THEM. The zipper means no laces and you know how I feel about laces. Throw on a baseball hat – bonus points if it’s a small business or local merch. I love Skypark so much and it makes me feel close to Santa to wear it (it’s the year-round Christmas-themed adventure park (obviously) in Lake Arrowhead that I’m obsessed OBSESSED with). But I’ve started picking up cool hats from Breweries up here. I like the mesh ones that are adjustable because I like how they are slightly oversized. You can stop here OR you can even throw over a trench or tailored wool coat. Why not? I mean, obviously, a fleece works too, but don’t be afraid to pull out something that leans “menswear” even if it’s kinda tailored.

The Difference A Pair Of Vans And A Fanny Pack Can Make

The punch-up of the classic checker vans really works. I wear them with my sweatshirt onesie and it feels like an outfit (whereas normal cross-trainers or running shoes could look dorky).

Jumpsuit | Bag | Shoes

Put on cool sneakers. Again, one foot at a time is recommended by our pediatrician. Put a belt bag over your head, then adjust to one side almost like it’s your armpit’s personal purse – this could be a fun leather one OR even just a more utilitarian one. I just like how they look, that is all. It feels weird wearing a “purse” with a sweatsuit but if you don’t need a big bag then what? The fanny pack that is what. Pull up your sweats to mid-calf – I have no idea why this is a thing, but it looks less schlubby, it just does. Repeat step #3 only with your arm sleeves. 1/2 way up to the elbow is advisable. Add baseball hat or beanie so that you don’t have to think about your hair with the humidity. Ideally, your hair is in a ponytail because if you have it down then go out in the rain you can look like a character in Wayne’s World when it gets curly. Pony + face-framing pieces. You know, like the Fronch.

While I don’t do too well with laces because I’m a toddler, I am eyeing a few others to shake it up below. Some classic waffle Nikes (gotta represent up here) and a couple others from Sezane, UO, FP, and Madewell (and while I think that Converse does the same thing I just can’t with how flat they are and how long it takes to lace up the high tops). I personally stay away from anything too white living up here. I’m LOVING these darker browns/blacks and greens – they feel fresh and not too ‘mom on the way to aerobics’ (not that anything is wrong with that).

The Baggy Jeans And Oversized T-Shirt Trick

Pants | Shirt | Sweater | Beanie | Bandana | Bag | Boots (similar)

This one I think looked better without the hat. I think I have slightly too much going on, but here’s what I did.

Roll up pants to be high enough to show your sexy ankle. If you are from the Victorian era you might be offended at this notion. But with baggy jeans, you need to some some ‘leg’ to play with proportions. Put on tight boots that tuck in under the jean- a lot of shooties do this – or if they are elastic. They pipe right up your leg in just the right way. Work that sexy ankle shootie. Throw on a cardigan – I’m into oversized grandpa boxy ones on my frame. This does not need to be your grandpa, it could be a friend’s grandpa or if you see a grandpa on the street and you like his sweater you could offer to buy it. Just offer a fair price. I ALMOST FORGOT TO TELL YOU TO 1/2 TUCK YOUR SHIRT – PLEASE DO SO IMMEDIATELY. Apply bandana. I like doing this loosely, almost haphazardly because I’m lazy and don’t have a ton of patience. I like the knot to be in the front or to the side. WARNING: DO NOT PAIR BANDANA WITH BASEBALL HAT. I did this last week and was mistaken for a boys scout. True story. Almost. Add crossbody bag with pattern (Madewell has straps you can buy to put on any leather bag). I love this one very much. Add simple beanie, maybe. Maybe not.

Listen. It’s cool to be comfortable. Full Stop. Maybe these little things will help us feel slightly more stylish? Maybe not. 🙂 ALSO IT DOESN’T MATTER LET’S JUST HAVE FUN IN LIFE AND TAKE IT ALL LESS SERIOUS MKAY?

My Favorite 2021 Fashion Styling Hacks/Trends – A Step By Step How To Style Comfortable Clothes To Look Like You Still Have Style

DONE. YOU ARE WELCOME.

House Numerology/Astrology – Does Your Address Number Affect How You Live In your home? Let’s Explore Mine…

A couple of years ago good friends of ours were at the mountain house at asked “what astrological number is this house?”. I had never even heard of house numerology before but I’m one of those creatures that get so excited when there is a new way to talk about all our stuff. I love astrology, tarot, palm readings, mediums, psychics, enneagrams, Myers Briggs, crystals, auras, ghosts, spirit guides, color tests – ALL OF IT, without letting it really guide or dictate my future. To me, it’s just FUN that creates really great conversations (says the 7 enneagram/Virgo). Ok fine, I’m 100% in (some) mediums and have found the enneagram quite possibly the most useful personality tool in all of my interpersonal relationships, as well as helping me understand myself SO MUCH BETTER. But I’m less into astrology (possibly because I don’t act very Virgo-y – everyone who knows me immediately asks what my rising is, what time I was born, etc, because THAT’s how much it doesn’t track). That’s all to say I LOVE talking about it all. So we immediately did the math on the mountain house and realized it was a 7. “OF COURSE IT IS A 7” they both said. So after looking up what being a “7” house number means, I obviously wanted to find out the rest of the numbers in past, current and future homes and BOY DID IT TRACK. Now, before all you skeptics cast your doubt on it (understandably) why not just add it up and have some fun. Of course, it might be total BS, but it also might not. I generally have a sense of the universe and believe in cosmic energy, etc, so I’m more open to it, but even if you aren’t it’s fun to figure out what some other humans have written down about the number your address adds up to. Brian doesn’t believe in it AT ALL and yet, even he can have so much fun with it. Let’s take mine as an example:

My friends Annie and Derik recommended Kari Samuels as who they reference – go check her out here. But there are a lot of different websites out there, saying basically the same thing (I just like her writing). I quoted her site here for all of my numbers. And if you want to know how you add it up it goes like this: if your address is 1553, you add them all up (14, then add 1+4 = 5, since it only goes up 12). Kari explains it better. Now on to mine!

Los Feliz Rental = #5 (2011 – 2013)photo by zeke ruelas for ehd | from: introducing my living room

What does 5 mean?: Kari Samuels: “If you love to socialize this is the place for you! 5 loves to party so there is never a dull moment. 5 is the most gregarious of all the numbers so this is a great place for people who love having people over and entertaining guests. There are always surprises with 5, so if you love excitement and adventure, you’ve found the right place. Perfect for those who love to travel, meet new people, try new things, and enjoy your freedom. If you want to break up your routine, get out of a rut, or just have fun, you’ve found the right home!

ME: Oh indeed. We did party here and as you can see it was/is FUN. This was also when I had just finished shooting Secrets From a Stylist, had my first big partnerships which meant the blog was making money, and started hiring professional photographers for my projects. We had a lot of freedom at the time (freelance jobs, no kids) and tried lots of new things. I think this was when we had the most fun in LA, going out to dinner 2-3 times a week, big brunches on the weekends because none of our friends had kids yet.

photo by laure joliet | from: my bedroom

Challenges for a 5: Kari Samuels: “If you’re looking for quiet, reflection, or stability, you won’t find it here. You might find this to be a temporary home rather than a permanent one. Because 5 promotes variety and change, you might find it difficult to make up your mind or focus on practical matters.

SPOT ON. It did not feel like a quiet home and we certainly weren’t homebodies here. This was our early 30s when “making up your mind” is difficult anyway and you want a lot of variety/change.

Glendale = #3 (2013 – 2016)photo by tessa neustadt | from: my house tour from good housekeeping

What does 3 mean?: Kari Samuels: “This home is sure to have a cheerful, upbeat energy. 3 is a fun, vivacious number, so this is a wonderful place to have lively social gatherings. It is a highly creative vibration, so if you are wanting to start a family or an artistic endeavor, this would be a great place!

SPOT ON!!!!!! We had social gatherings in every house, but this one felt light and indeed vivacious. Full of joy and easy fun. So many patio parties, far more casual gatherings, and of course we did start our family here.

photo by tessa neustadt | from: our master bedroom – finally

What does 3 mean? (continued): Kari Samuels: “Feelings are openly expressed here, as well as unique, innovative ideas. This is a wonderful home best suited for artists, singles, couples or families, or anyone who loves to live life to the fullest and express themselves with joy.

ME: I know that that could be almost anyone, but it does feel accurate. I remember feeling EXTREMELY happy here, rarely in a bad mood (Brian has a different recollection of this house TBH). I loved this house so much – besides not having a backyard and needing to climb 30 stairs to get to our front door (with two small kids) it was full of light and joy.

photo by tessa neustadt | from: my house tour from good housekeeping

Challenges for a 3: Kari Samuels: “This energy can lend itself to you being scattered, unfocused, or spending too much money. You need to make sure you stay grounded and take time to focus on practical things. 3 energy can also tend to have self-doubt, so make sure you are nurturing positive feelings about yourself at all times.

HMM. I don’t think I was particularly grounded here, and with two small kids, it certainly wasn’t practical. Brian would say that these years he was full of self-doubt so that tracks, too. It’s when he got into therapy which he wrote about here to possibly nurture positive feelings about himself?

Los Feliz = #9 (2016 – 2021)photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: a quick update: the changes i’ve made to my la living room

What does 9 mean? Kari Samuels: “Everyone is welcome in a 9 home! 9 promotes feelings of love and acceptance. This is the number of universal love and compassion. Your intuition will be at an all-time high. You might find yourself receiving phone calls and visitors from people seeking your advice. People will be drawn to your home because of the loving energy there. 9 is an international number. You might feel the need to travel, or welcome visitors from other parts of the world.

I joked all the time that we had the parent frat house. Everyone wanted to bring their kids over on the weekend and stay for hours – it was just so easy to parent and play here (so safe, lots of ways to watch kids without helicoptering). Yes to the feelings of love and acceptance (no to the traveling or necessarily having visitors from other parts of the world).

What does 9 mean? (continued): Kari Samuels: “You will find yourself conjuring memories and emotions from the past so you can have healing and forgiveness. Express feelings and creativity. Ultimately, you will learn a great deal about yourself and other people from living here. You will find many emotional rewards.

Challenges for a 9: “This address is particularly suited to groups that promote the good of the whole such as dorms or schools, or people with an open heart and mind, but not as good for families who want a lot of alone time. 9 is an idealistic energy, and can be difficult if you are needing to make more money or become more ambitious.

Mountain House = #7 (2016 – Current)photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: mountain house reveal: our light-filled neutral & textural living room

What does #7 mean: Kari Samuels: “If you are a mystic, writer, researcher, or spiritual seeker of any sort, you will love living here. 7 is a private vibration, and can be somewhat secretive. It inspires deep thought, reflection, and powerful insight. If you love to come home and have quiet time to read, reflect and restore, you will thrive here!

ME: INDEED. I did thrive there, even before quarantine. This house felt like 100% an escape and the vibration was low and calm. It is where Brian and I both wrote every day, and I’ve never felt so grounded and centered. Yes. I miss it every single day.

What does #7 mean (continued):To promote tranquility, water is a lovely element to add to this home, if you don’t already live near a body of water. You can have some thrilling spiritual and intellectual insights here, so it is a wonderful home to promote dramatic shifts in your consciousness.

photo by sara ligorria-tramp | from: mountain house reveal: our calm scandinavian master bedroom

Challenges for a #7: If you like entertaining, or love to party, you can find yourself going a little stir-crazy. You might find it is too isolating or lonely at times. It is important that you eliminate any clutter in your environment as well as your thoughts to harmonize with your home’s energy.

I thought I loved to party, but being up there in isolation over quarantine was amazing and I didn’t get stir crazy for ONE SECOND. So not sure how accurate that part is. But as far as uncluttered? For sure.

Make sure to take good care of your roof and make all necessary repairs, since 7 homes are prone to roof damage – particularly if it is an address that adds up to 16, which is a karmic lesson number. Since 7s love to escape, you would want to avoid this address if you are prone to alcohol or drug addictions.

Farmhouse = #11 (2020 – Current)

What does 11 mean?:11 is the Master Number of Intuition and Illumination. The number 11 shaped like two pillars, representing a gateway of new growth for you. When you live in an 11 home, you will be inspired with new ideas, creativity, and innovation. You will find many rich and rewarding opportunities, especially those that promote leadership and creativity.

Ok this one made me nervous. I think for this stage of my life I’d rather have the most grounded number, but this sounds like a lot of really incredible things are going to happen here (which is exciting too, obviously). At the same time, it’s definitely been rewarding and certainly has inspired creativity.

What does 11 mean? (continued):Since this is a number of light, you will want to design your home with beautiful airy decor. Keep it uncluttered, and decorate it with meaningful artifacts. 11 reduces to the number 2 (1+1 = 2) therefore this can promote harmony, provided that each person maintains their independence.

DONE AND DONE. So much light we are calling it the Swiss Cheese house. And absolutely we are going minimal on clutter, keeping it as simple and calm as possible.

Challenges for a 11: “Because 11 is a master number, there are spiritual tests that you must go through. 11 is a number of partnership and can promote harmony ONLY if both people are aligned with their truth and maintain a strong sense of self. If you are codependent in any way, or give your power away, you will find yourself getting into relationship struggles.

This is to teach you to be interdependent in relationships, rather than co-dependent. Since you will be flooded with intuitive insights in this home, you want to make sure you EXPRESS your creativity, or else you might feel anxious or confused. You must act on your ideas, not just think about them.

This part kinda scared me, but Brian and I are pretty interdependent, not co-dependent (I think), but we have talked about this a lot because of this “number” being our future. Also, I’ve done nothing BUT act on my ideas the last 20 years so that comes easy for me, but I kinda thought I was in a different stage now. Maybe not???

So go ahead add yours up and see if it tracks or no. If nothing else hopefully it’s good happy hour conversation tonight with friends. xx

Farmhouse = #11 (2020 – Current)

If nothing else hopefully it’s good happy hour conversation tonight with friends. xx

How To Style Your Coffee Table: Our Super Easy 3-Step Formula

Imagine it’s Halloween night. You’re sitting at home and all of a sudden you hear a ring of your doorbell and a knock on your door. Tiny voices are outside giggling – the time is now. You get up, grab your bowl of candy, and head for the door. As it swings open you hear those little child voices scream “TRICK OR TREAT” and you know what they came here for. As you reach into the bowl they see something horrifying behind you: AN EMPTY COFFEE TABLE. They scream and run away with fright. It’s the third time this has happened tonight. I’m so glad you all came here today so you can prevent this from happening this weekend…

Okay while that might have been a bit dramatic of a story – trying to style your coffee table well might just actually be the most daunting and scariest thing you’ll do all week…and we get it. It’s an awkwardly shaped surface that needs to be functional, not overstyled, but not understyled. So how can it be done? You guys. It can be easy as pie if you just follow our simple shake and bake recipe. We have used this super-secret Krabby Patty formula for years and we’re gonna show u how to do it well every single time no matter the coffee table shape or size – you heard me – size does not matter here today! Let’s begin.

If you need help picking a coffee table you can head to this post, but today we’re just chatting how to style it. There are 3 categories of items we use to style a coffee table: a plant (usually tall branches or florals in a sculptural vase), books (either a stack of books or 1 single open book), and a candle AND/OR a stack of coasters.

Now, each category has 2 items in it – you can either choose 1 item from each category OR you can go for more depending on your style (so yes, you have permission to add in coasters AND candles if you so choose) just make sure you have 1 tall object, 1 medium object and one short object – trust us – you want varying heights. Playing with levels will be your best friend in making your space look inviting 🙂

Let’s get into each category so we can really break down what’s important since every space is different. So, when it comes to plants and vases this is typically going to be your ‘tall object’ on your coffee table. Now because it’s your tall object, be wary when it comes to HOW tall. If you reach 12 inches plus it will probably look AWESOME in a photo, but might block your view if you have someone coming over or if you are trying to chat with family in everyday life across the room. We typically will forage branches to style with (pretty much every single shoot actually) because they look so cool. So if you want to take a cool photo or impress someone in a more ‘formal’ living room where you might not have a lot of conversation and hang out it, then the taller & more sculptural the better. Why not go for a little drama?

If you’re trying to make it more functional, think of going with just a taller, more sculptural vase that can stand on its own and be pretty without branches or florals in it. That way you’ll have your tall item, but you’re not peeking through a forest trying to talk to your friend 🙂

Now here are just a few of our favorites on the internet right now if you’re feeling shopping-inspired:

1. Ficus Audrey Plant| 2. ZZ Plant | 3. Purple Waffle Plant| 4. H&M Green Large Vase | 5. Ceramic Totem Vase | 6. Jungalow Ceramic Vase

Trays and Books

Okay, this category might say ‘Trays and Books’ but it really should read ‘TRAYS and books.’ The tray has a level of importance that books and plants don’t quite have – especially if you’re styling for everyday functionality. Think of it as the rug of your coffee table, the heartbeat of your decor pieces. It is that thing that corrals everything together so you lose your TV remote less frequently. The place where you can put even more decorative & fun objects that aren’t even on this list but are personal to you. Heck, you could even put a book in there if you wanted to. Trays are multi-functional and are super important if you’re looking for functionalism over minimalism.

Now let’s get into the book section and our one insanely easy and super-secret EHD styling hack…

A book can act like a tray and corral smaller objects (who doesn’t enjoy putting cute little trinkets or a candle on top of your books) but it’s also great because it can inject personality into a space and give a guest something to do and look at when they sit down. Books are inviting and totally fun – and there’s a whole category of books people refer to as ‘coffee table books’ because they work so fricken well on that lil table. But they’re pretty rectangular and if you’re already dealing with a lot of squares, rectangles, and all-around hard edges in a space, it might be time to soften up the table styling. INSERT THE OPEN BOOK HACK. Just open up your favorite book to a pretty page with a pretty picture, and it makes it looks sculptural and can add a little color if needed 🙂

1. Wood Pedestal Coffee Tray Table | 2. Acacia Wood Serving Tray | 3. Burl Wood Tray | 4. Peter Lindbergh Book | 5. Andy Warhol Book | 6. Styled: Secrets for Arranging Rooms, from Tabletops to Bookshelves by Emily Henderson (how could we not throw that in)

Candles And Coasters

The last category is typically the shortest height-wise out of the three. Candles are awesome to have in a living room & coasters are super helpful to have on your coffee table, so these two items definitely get bonus points for functionality. You can find a spot for one or both of these items (especially if you have a larger coffee table) and they’re both very functional and look great.

1. Opalhouse x Jungalow Candle | 2. Studio Mcgee Candle | 3. Totem Sculptural Candle | 4. Ceramic Coasters | 5. Hex Coasters|6. Glass Fused Coasters

That’s it for this post! Hope it was helpful and I’ll see ya in the comments 🙂
