The Reveal You Didn’t Know You Were Waiting For – EHD Alum Photographer, Tessa, Shows Us Her FINALLY Updated Kitchen (Including A Classic New Trend)

If you’ve been around these blog parts for a while then you know the name, Tessa Neustadt. Before Sara became our main photographer, Tessa was our gal (you’ve definitely seen her name credited in countless blog posts). Well, actually she started out as an intern back in 2012. Pretty cool, huh?! And no, Sara did not perform a hostile photography takeover! No camera duels were had:) The word had been getting out about Tessa’s talent and she was getting booked all of the time. So it was a very friendly transition since Sara was really honing her interior photography skills and shooting more of our projects. It’s been about 4 years since then which feels both like yesterday and a million years ago. But like most all EHD alums do we ever really let them loose???
This reveal feels a little extra special to me because I am a huge Tessa fan and we got to work together little in my early EHD days. She’s as talented as she is kind. A true creative. This woman is a photographer, stylist, designer (homes, furniture, jewelry), and I’m sure there’s more that I’m missing. I also remember being at her house once and her lamenting about how much she hated her kitchen and couldn’t wait to change everything about it. Let me show you what it was like:

Functional? Yes. Beautiful and in line with Tessa’s style?? No.
She and her partner, Chris, have been chipping away at making their home feel like them and this kitchen is such an exciting and big part of that!
Naturally, I asked Tessa a bunch of questions so let’s get into this stunning transformation. Welcome to her kitchen…

Wall Color | Cabinet Fronts | Cabinet Color | Pendant
Since Tessa has shot likely hundreds of beautiful kitchens over the years teeming with inspiration, I wanted to know what were the top must-haves for her own dream kitchen. She told me that the main things she wanted were marble countertops, an unlacquered brass faucet, and a floating marble shelf.
Simple and perfect if you ask me. Actually, two of her main inspirations were these two kitchens below. Honestly, if I were renovating a kitchen these would be on my mood board too. They are perfect.

Those designers however had a much bigger budget. So while a statement veined marble full of warmth would have been Tessa’s dream, she was pleasantly surprised that the Carrara marble slabs she found were cheaper than the manmade options she thought she would need to go with based on budget. Each slab was about $1,300 (not including the fabrication). Marble is definitely the more high maintenance option but if you are up for it (like Tessa and Chris), it’s such a beautiful option.

Before we get into the shelf, I was curious why they chose a skinny stone backsplash vs going with tile or a taller height. I think it’s always interesting to dive into those details that sometimes fly under the radar when you’re looking at a finished kitchen. Her reasoning was this: “I’ve always been really drawn towards the low backsplash/no backsplash look that you see in a lot of English kitchens.”

Now let’s talk about that single shelf and what inspired those perfect brass shelf poles! Heart be still.

“I was dead set on having a floating marble shelf in the kitchen, unfortunately, we have a pocket door on the wall where the shelf was going to be. Because of that, there wasn’t a way to support the shelf on that side of the wall. Our photo friend turned contractor, Brian Higbee (of Format Builders) came up with the idea to hang the brass dowels from the ceiling as a way to support the shelf. “
Well, those brass dowels might be my personal favorite detail. It’s moments like those that if you can add them in will really personalize your space and make it unique to you. I am also now in search of a friend turned contractor.

Since we’re talking metallics and making things special, I had to ask her about their use of bronze. I may or may not have talked about my sneaking suspicion that bronze is on the rise in another post. I don’t really want to call it a trend because bronze is clearly a classic metal that when used right is completely timeless… like in this kitchen. But up until this past year it’s hasn’t really been hot on the scene.
However, this is the reason why Tessa chose to use it in her hardware, appliance details, and beautiful pendant: “I love bronze and have been using it in almost all of my design projects recently! It’s a nice middle ground between brass and black. I especially like it when I want a dark accent but don’t want something quite as harsh as black.”

Makes sense to me! Plus, you might also notice that Tessa mixed bronze, brass, and hints of silver. Why it works so seamlessly is because she chose a dominant metal (bronze), then for her secondary metal chose a warm brass which tonally works beautifully (both warm). Then has just a couple of small warm silver moments. They don’t compete which is what you want to think about if you are trying to mix your metals.
Ok, it’s time to talk about layout. Keeping costs down is always the goal in any renovation and when you are talking about rooms with plumbing and gas lines, using the same layout will usually help in the money department. I asked Tessa if that’s why they didn’t really change up the layout.

“We kept the same general layout because it worked well with the space. Previously the laundry was stacked in the kitchen and the fridge was squished right next to our stove. We moved the laundry to the third bedroom and put the new fridge in its place. It really opened up the space!”

Speaking of saving money where you can…
“Using Ikea cabinets and Semihandmade fronts kept the costs down and allowed us to splurge on items like the sink and faucet. Format Builders built custom end caps for the Ikea cabinetry to make it feel more high-end / less like Ikea.”

I also noticed that they didn’t keep the counter overhang idea from the previous version. She said that since they put in a built-in dining nook (that I desperately wish we could see but can a little in the photo above), they no longer needed it. Also, she personally isn’t a fan of how islands look with overhangs.
Ok, we gotta talk about this beautiful styling and THOSE MIRRORS.

I love the mirrors in kitchens so much! But I know you all are curious if she needs to constantly clean them because of cooking. Her answer…

“The mirrors are far enough away that nothing ever gets splattered on them! I will say that the floating shelf does get pretty dusty, I had no idea how dusty our house was until now!”
Ugh, I feel the same way about my apartment! How do we get this dust situation under control?? Until then, I think we all need to admire Tessa’s styling. With a home that, which in her words lacks any architectural style, decorating with pieces that are full of soul and personality is a great idea. Notice all of the textures she incorporated with the bowls, vessels, cookware, etc. Her eye is impeccable and lucky for you she has a shop that she’s currently updating! Definitely keep checking back here

My last question had to be: Any “fun” challenges that caused you to need to pivot?

Tessa’s answer: “Well, the pandemic hit towards the end of the renovation so we were left with an unfinished kitchen for a while! (see photos) We ended up painting the walls, “installing” lighting and appliances ourselves. The pocket door I mentioned earlier definitely threw a wrench in the plans!”
Well, it turned out beautiful and I couldn’t be happier for them.

Love you, mean it.

Our 10 Favorite Personalized Gifts They’ll Actually Love (And No, It’s Not A Photo Book)

First off I want to say that we also love photo books, so 100% no shade if that’s what you are or want to give this or any other year! But that’s already a go-to when thinking of a thoughtful personalized gift, right? So Em and I were talking about the personalized gifts that she has either given, gotten, or just really loves the idea of and how that should be a post. To me, this list is a gift in and of itself because while I love the idea of getting a personalized gift, I equally panic at the “non-returnability” of it all. What if they don’t love it and now they are stuck with it? This may be an unpopular opinion but I am a huge proponent of exchanging gifts you don’t love. But I honestly feel that these ideas assuage any worries of that. You can personalize confidently:) Plus over half of these are from small makers so it’s a double win. Let’s get into this now, because you might need to order these asap to have them get to you on time…
Wood Music Box
Emily bought and personalized one of these (two different designs) for each of her kids last year. They both love them, are super special making them something they can keep forever, AND supports a small maker. It’s also a beautiful gift if someone in your life just had a baby. We honestly can’t imagine this not melting everyone’s hearts. 10/10
Watercolor House Portrait Ornament
Do you know someone that moved last year?? Pretty sure everyone just raised their hand. This is an ornament that is not only very cute but would mean so much to them! This one is also cute and more affordable.
Painted Pet Or House Ornament
These are two ornaments that Em actually got last year for their Buttercup and Oscars ornaments and for their LA house portrait when they sold it. She says they are SO BEAUTIFUL. Emily Henderson approved.
House Portrait
Ok, this is the final “house portrait” recommendation I promise. Look it’s a design blog so we loved celebrating people’s homes. There are a ton out there and it depends on your (or their) style, but Em really likes this one. Plus this idea is great for those who don’t celebrate Christmas and ornaments aren’t something they’d use.
Embroidered/Monogrammed Sweatshirt
When Em sent this idea over I almost immediately bought it for myself. It’s so freaking cute and under $40 (not including shipping). I would feel very loved if I unwrapped this puppy. For another kids only option, Em likes this one, too because of the cute font.
Photo Ornaments Of Kids
By now you should know that the Henderson’s are “fun/memory ornament” people now. Once Em realized that a Christmas tree is like a scrapbook the floodgates opened. Happy memories are now all over their tree and she loves these because of how cute and funny they are.
Weekend Bag
I use my weekend bag all of the time. I tend to take a good amount of little trips (especially this past year) so it’s the perfect way to throw all of my necessities in a cute bag and be on my merry way. So when Em showed me this cutie, my immediate response was “oh ya, this is awesome.” They have a bunch of different colors to choose from too. (I know cream isn’t the most dirt friendly but it’s just so pretty:))
Packing Cubes
Em was super surprised by how much she loves these packing cubes and I am right there with her. I haven’t jumped on the cube train yet, but after my friend visited me a couple of months ago and I saw how they made her life so much more organized I was in. There are also more colors but I really love this idea as a gift. Thought, practical and pretty darn cute:)
Luggage
From Em: “If you really want to spoil someone, get them this awesome luggage.”
I agree and absolutely love this green color. If you don’t necessarily need to personalize your gift but have a friend that loves to travel check out this post too!
Leather USB Keychain!!
Em had no idea these existed and thinks they are so smart and she’s right. As someone who says weekly, “if my phone dies, I’ll call you back later” this would be an invaluable gift. Plus depending on your budget it’s also a really great secret Santa gift.
Ok, One More:) Cardholder
This one is just from me. My very wonderful aunt gave me a zip cardholder she had on hand when she saw me rummaging through my very unorganized purse, looking for my credit card. Now I’m a convert. Having your cards on the outside of your wallet just makes like SO much easier. The one she gave me isn’t quite my style so when my brother asked me what I wanted for Christmas I said this! It’s so pretty, personalizable, and I personally love the red so it will be easy to spot in my bag.
That’s it! Hope this was helpful and gave you some solid ideas for your loved ones. Let us know in the comments what personalized gifts you received that were awesome (or some cautionary tales if you have them). Sharing is caring:)
Love you, mean it.

Sophisticated, Meaningful Hanukkah Decorating Ideas to Get Your Home Ready for Candle-Lighting (Because It’s Right Around The Corner!)

Hi again, EHD readers! I can’t believe it’s been a year since I last popped over here to chat with you about Hanukkah. Whaaat?! Time is wild. But it’s true—a whole year has passed, which means we’re once again just days away from this year’s holiday. The team was kind enough to invite me back to offer up some updated-for-2021 Hanukkah décor ideas, and I’m so excited to share them with you in just a moment.
(Quick aside: If Hanukkah’s not your holiday, don’t jump ship just yet! As I mentioned last year, this post is for you as well. I hope you’ll stick around, because I think you’ll get something out of this, too.)
But I’m getting ahead of myself—some introductions are in order. So, hi! I’m Rebekah. By day, I’m an editor; by night, I run a Jewish-focused lifestyle blog, RebekahLowin.com (come say hi on Instagram here—we’re knee-deep in Hanukkah inspo right now and it’s a party). On my site, I share sophisticated, creative ideas for beautifying Jewish holidays—inspired home décor, pretty table settings, unconventional DIYs, and new takes on old-school recipes. In many ways, it’s become the inspiration hub I often wished I had access to when I was younger. Which makes me pretty dang proud.

But…why bother with all of that? Why dedicate my free time to setting tables and taking pretty pictures of the result? It’s a great question—thank you, invisible reader. And my answer is simple: To me, beauty and meaning go hand in hand. More specifically—especially as it relates to Jewish holidays—beauty and memory go hand in hand. And memory, after all, is at the heart of Hanukkah.
I look at my 29-year-old Hanukkah menorah, and I don’t just see a menorah. I see my many siblings packed together by the windowsill of a dimly-lit kitchen, excitedly whispering as we wait for our turn to light the candles. I pick up one of my mother’s ceramic platters, and I see piles of (shamelessly store-bought) sufganiyot, a mess of confectioner’s sugar and jelly on a black sweater, the sound of my dad and grandfather joking in Yiddish nearby. I turn a candle over in my hand, and I can already see its light reflecting in those dark kitchen windows, flickering and waning silently as we skip out of the room to end the night with a movie.
There’s so much embedded in those heirlooms—fragments of decades-old laughter, visions of crumpled-up gelt wrappers, the taste of extra-cold apple sauce on an extra-hot latke (the BEST) (don’t even try coming for me with those sour cream takes; I won’t stand for it). Suffice it to say, these objects carry much, much more than just an 8-day-long purpose; they carry most of our family memories, too. It’s right there in all of the classic Hanukkah songs we learned as kids: “One for each night, they shed a sweet light / to remind us of days long ago.”

We’re all design lovers here. We know that design is about so much more than placing an object here or there. That tangible things often give way to something so much bigger—something holy, even. And that’s really why I still get excited about decorating for Hanukkah. Not just because beautifying a space or a table or a windowsill makes my heart sing—though it does, and that’s certainly a big piece of it. Trust me, my heart sings a five-act OPERA looking at a pretty menorah! But I mostly get excited because hidden within this Hanukkah are all of the Hanukkahs of years past—Hanukkahs celebrated by close relatives, distant relatives, ancestors from thousands of years ago, and total strangers to whom I may never even know I’m connected.
It’s about more than just schlepping out a menorah and plopping it on a windowsill. It has to be.

There’s a really beautiful Elie Wiesel quote that I think feels relevant here. He once said that “there is divine beauty in learning… To learn means to accept the postulate that life did not begin at my birth. Others have been here before me, and I walk in their footsteps.” Beautiful, right? I think the same can be said about heirlooms. These objects, like the words in an ancient book—or a book of any kind, really—remind us that someone else was once here in our place. And I don’t know about you, but I find that incredibly comforting. Safeguarding and maintaining a library of well-loved heirlooms is the ultimate way to feel connected to what’s come before and what is yet to come. It’s a way of making memories tangible. One of the only ways.
I think that’s why many families hesitate to purchase new menorahs and other Judaica pieces. So much of Jewish culture is based on memory, history, and ideas passed down “l’dor va-dor” (“from generation to generation”), and it can feel quite literally sacrilegious to stop using those items in favor of something shinier and sparklier and more modern. But the way I see it, the newer pieces don’t have to replace the antiques! And wait a sec—who says you have to opt for a thoroughly modern, shiny design, anyway? Helloooo, flea market finds! (By the way, Facebook Marketplace is exploding with Judaica these days. I’m a big fan.)
If anything, growing your existing collection is a nice way of highlighting the importance of those older, more time-town pieces. It’s also an excellent opportunity to support Jewish small businesses and celebrate Jewish artists.
Win-win all-around, really.
Below, I’ve curated a little “someday heirlooms” shop to get you inspired about adopting one of these special items, bringing something different into your home, and beginning a new tradition. I hope each piece delights and inspires you the way it delighted me when I came across it. And even if you’re just window-shopping (hey, no judgment; that’s what I was doing here!), I hope you feel a little more excited about the upcoming holiday after browsing. Here goes:
Menorahs

1. Tree of Life Menorah | 2. Trace Chanukiah | 3. Tikal Wood Menorah Set | 4. Elephant Menorah | 5. SIN Stacked Menorah | 6. Blacksmith Handmade 9 Branch Iron Hanukkah Menorah | 7. Modern Menorah | 8. White Marble Menorah Candle Holder | 9. Oak Street Menorah | 10. Menorah | 11. Blue & White Ceramic Hand Painted Petite Menorah | 12. Stoneware Menorah | 13. Lucite Menorah
Okay, how gorgeous are these? A favorite would have to be that new Tree of Life Menorah from Target; it’s just such a nice, budget-friendly option and it’s downright elegant. Under $30? Yes, please. The White Marble Menorah is a fabulous modern option for anyone looking to go that route, and…alright, let’s just take a moment to appreciate the gorgeousness of that Blue and White Ceramic Hand-Painted Menorah. “Special” barely scratches the surface. The Via Maris Trace Hanukkah Menorah is a fabulous option from a new, small Jewish business.
Tabletop

1. Starry Night Salad Plate | 2. Navy Amundson Striped 100% Cotton Table Runner | 3. NoHo Glass (Set of 4) | 4. Blue And White Square Bijou Napkins (Set Of 4) | 5. Calder Double Old-Fashioned Glass | 6. Classic Hemstitch Border Tablecloth | 7. Insight Mug | 8. Caspian Blue Reactive Glaze Serving Bowl | 9. 20-Piece Champagne Flatware Set | 10. Boston Colored Lead Free Crystal Goblet (Set of 4) | 17. Chinoiserie Ceramic Coasters with Holder | 18. Brushed Gold Place Card Holders (Set of 4)
Here’s the thing about setting the table for Hanukkah: You absolutely don’t have to stick with the tried-and-true blues. But it’s certainly a nice place to start. Recently, I’ve been loving adding orange and pink touches to an all-blue base—it creates an excellent branching-off point from which to let your creativity roam free! The Navy Tablecloth or Striped Table Runner here would work beautifully, and I just love those Agate Coasters—technically, they’re called “Black Quartz” but I’m getting some indigo-purple vibes from that hue myself. Add some gorgeous mugs (you’ve got to try a gelt-y hot chocolate; it’s so good!) like these Insight Mugs, throw in some of those beautiful Starry Night Salad Plates, and all that’s left to add is a pretty centerpiece! Oh, and food. Lots of food. Can’t forget the food.
Decor

1. Embroidered Velvet Menorah Square Throw Pillow | 2. Walnut Dreidel | 3. London Blue Hurricane Candle Holders | 4. Hanukkah Menorah Candles | 5. Emmett Antique Brass Taper Candle Holder | 6. Silver Glitter Starburst | 7. Happy Hanukkah Brass Figural | 8. Gifting Box | 9. Blue Onyx Star Of David |10. Hexagon Decorative Tray | 11. Large Footed Brass Bowl | 12. Brass Dreidel
Dreidels aren’t just for kids, you know! I have several in my apartment that have been passed down through the generations, and they’re so special to me. While I’m not sure they’d be the ones I’d whip out for a quick game, they do look gorgeous sitting on my bookshelf year after year. I must say I’m very intrigued by this Leather Dreidel. A gorgeous platter is also a fun way to switch out your coffee table or dining room décor once the holiday rolls around; this Terrafirma Catch-All Tray caught (heh!) my eye. Blue Taper Candles are such a fun and easy option (if you don’t melt them down too much, you can use them for years!) and I love these Foundations Metal Collection Vases for a pop of gold.
Okay, I don’t know about you, but I am in the Hanukkah MOOD now. Which is good, because it’s in just over a week. I hope you’re feeling just as inspired to transform your home and add to (or begin!) a Judaica collection—or just grab a few new tabletop items to spruce up your home in advance of the holiday. If you’re looking for more inspiration, you can always visit my blog or follow along on Instagram—Hanukkah is the name of the game for the next 10 days, and I’ve got tons of ideas to help you create a beautiful experience for yourself or your family. Really. Tons. We’re talking Hanukkah desserts, cocktails, crafts (including DIY menorah ideas), quotes, poems, tablescapes, even breakfast ideas. WHEW. If you do pop in, drop me a line! I love making new friends through all of those platforms and I’d love to hear from you.
In the meantime, I’m wishing you all the happiest, most special start to the holiday season—no matter who you are or what you celebrate. At the end of the day, we’re all after the same thing: bringing a little light and meaning to these shorter days. I hope you’re able to do exactly that in whatever way feels best to you, whether it’s going to town decorating your home or just sitting quietly and enjoying the chilly weather with a gigantic mug of hot chocolate and a zillion marshmallows. I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes from author Anita Diamant: “This is the season when people of all faiths and cultures are pushing back against the planetary darkness. We string bulbs, ignite bonfires, and light candles. And we sing.”

Wanna Give A Gift That Will Always Win?? Welcome to Caitlin (And Brenda’s) Tried & Tested Practical Gift Guide

YOOHOO, FRIENDS! It’s me, Caitlin, here to spread the word on a well-kept secret: my mom, Brenda, gives the best presents. They’re practical and useable and oftentimes kind of weird – like, oh, I didn’t know they made 6′ long lint rollers! – but they’ve saved the day and come in handy time and time again. I wanted to take a step back to highlight some of her greatest hits (along with some of the things I’ve bought for myself!) in the event that you’re in a bind and want to buy someone a gift that is, you know, helpful.
That said, these are proooooobably gifts best left for your closest friends and family. They’re not particularly sexy (I mean, unless you feel comfortable gifting a romantic emergency kit or a bidet, in which case…congrats on your healthy relationship!) but they ARE things that I’ve tried, tested, used, and loved. Wanna see what’s been under the Kelly-Higgins family tree for the past decade? GOOD, because it’s time to begin…

1 Headlamp: Because some of us like to go to the flea market before the sun rises, you know? (Also good for emergencies or, uh, nature activities that require lighting? My outdoor time begins and ends with “pacing parking lots while carrying old stuff.”)
2. Sewing Kit: This one is TSA compliant and a lifesaver. Keep it in your purse/backpack/suitcase – I swear it’ll come in handy someday. (Alternatively, Brenda grabbed this one for me last year – it’s Bridesmaid specific – and it’s great for any person in the midst of wedding season).
3. First Aid Kit: You know what I already had on hand when the pandemic started? A bunch of masks, because my mom thinks of EVERYTHING (like how I have really bad asthma and may need masks while living in wildfire country). A first aid kit is something everyone needs but most people my age forget about – highly recommend!!
4. Earthquake/Emergency Kit: When I moved to LA, Brenda grabbed me an emergency kit for my house and car because she knew that I’d never actually assemble one myself (she was right). The one I have is no longer available, but this one has all the essentials and more at an okay price.
5. Pop-Up Tent: In four months, every cute outdoor tent will be sold out. (Case in point – this striped tent was OOS all last summer.) If you have any summer plans coming up, why not take advantage of some holiday deals?
6. Stair Rolling Cart: I bought this for myself last year and it’s worth every penny (evidence!). It’s the best for groceries, laundry, thrifting, carrying recycling…the list goes on and on, you know? The wheels are GREAT.

1. Jump Starter: Who needs a friend when you can jump your car yourself? Added bonuses: Use it as a flashlight! Charge 2 devices with its USB ports! There’s a cigarette lighter socket outlet for old-school devices!
2. Groupon: Ok, this is a little bit of a ~free space~. For my 30th birthday this year, Brenda surprised me by paying some of my car insurance and MAN, THAT’S A GREAT PRESENT. Is there a recurring expense that you can cover for someone? If not, a Groupon for car washes or car detailing or oil changes scratches the same thoughtful itch.
3. Car Organizer: This was actually a gift from my godmother, Shannon, a few years ago and it’s a total dream! Great for keeping groceries upright or for hauling a bunch of thrift finds into the house in one fell swoop. Big fan!!!

1 Dyson Cordless Vacuum: I laughed out loud reading this viral tweet because WHERE IS THE LIE??? This $400 iteration is just as good but make sure to wait for Black Friday sales for the best savings!
2. Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner: Jess tipped me off to this compact upholstery cleaner and it’s AWESOME. Great for when you spill chicken tikka masala on your sofa (who, me???) or when your cat eats too fast and barfs all over the only rug in your home.
3. Wool Dryer Balls: Plot twist – I selfishly bought these for Brenda last year because (a.) I love them and (b.) she was using tennis balls to fluff up her laundry and these are SO MUCH QUIETER. I love the happy colors of these, too.

1. XL Lint Roller: SURPRISE HIT GIFT. Brenda hooked me up with one of these years ago and at first I was like “how is this different from a hand-sized roller?” but then I actually used it and I was SOLD. It speeds up the lint-/hair-collection process by a factor of about a billion AND it’s great for folks with mobility problems.
2. Pet Mat: When in doubt, grab a gift for your friend’s pet! This gingham mat is customizable (love it in green) and so freaking cute. The tartan plaid version is awesome, too.
3. Chom Chom Roller: If you even know a pet owner, buy them this. It’s incredible – way better than any vacuum attachment when it comes to getting hair off of bedding, pillows, or upholstery.

1. Always Pan: Highly recommended for the non-chef types in your life (i.e. me) – you know, the people who want to cook but are kinda overwhelmed by everything in the kitchen.
2. Apron: This one is like the Rolls Royce of aprons. Built-in pot-holders AND an easily accessible conversion chart? What else does a person need?
3. Cutting Board: There’s a phone slot on the prep side and a channel for catching any liquid and an easy pour spout on the carving side.
4. Adjustable Rolling Pin: Pick your dough’s thickness and width by moving the silicone rings. So smart, so simple.
5. Double Decker Dish Rack: I bought this for myself and I LOVE IT. There’s a rack up top, a tray for the bottom, and a separate silverware container. It fits a ton and has a pretty compact profile – big fan.
6. Silicone Lids: I write about these at least once a quarter, but they’re worth it!!! No more microwave spills AND they’re airtight, so you can throw them on any bowl or dish instead of breaking out saran wrap or aluminum foil.

1. Foot Peel: This is internet famous for a reason. It is disgusting and satisfying. Grab one for your friends (it’s novel and fun!) but also get one for yourself and spend your holiday break watching your feet transform. It’s WILD.
2. Scrub Towels: I will use this blog to preach the gospel of Japanese scrub towels until the day I die. Ditch your loofah for these!!! They’re washable and incredible at exfoliating and quick-drying and…just try them, ok?
3. Squatty Potty: Did Brenda buy me one of these? YUP. Does it live up to the hype? HECK YEAH. Would this be my go-to white elephant gift? Absolutely.
4. Massaging Scalp Brush: If you’re a deep-cuts reader, you may remember that this was what I asked for last year – it is a DREAM for getting gunk off your scalp.
5. Tushy: Every time I use one of these at a friends’ house, I’m like “AH, yes, I gotta buy one,” and then I forget almost immediately. (I loved reading Bowser’s testimony about her Tushy, too.)
6. Hot Tool Caddy: Brenda got me this 5 or 6 years ago. It was a great small space solution then (and a welcome alternative to, you know, throwing my blowdryer and straightener haphazardly into my vanity) and it’s great for storing tools as they cool down now.

1. Magic Keyboard: Brenda knocked this outta the park last year!!! I do a lot of math for my gig here (who knew), so the dedicated number pad makes SUCH A DIFFERENCE. This is such an awesome and thoughtful gift for anyone who spends their day on the computer.
2. Smart Plugs: Turn anything on and off from your phone. If you’re the type to be like “oh, crap, did I turn my curling wand off,” these will remove so much daily anxiety from your life.
3. Seat Cushion: Broken back tested, broken back approved. When I was re-learning how to sit up straight last year, this pad made all the difference. If you sit all day for work, this will change your life (or at least your spinal alignment) for the better!!
4. 6 Foot Cables: Grab the pack of 5. This is the best stocking stuffer. No one has ever been like “man, I wish I had a shorter charging cable.”
5. Lumbar Back Cushion: Let me quote our own Veronica here – “This lumbar support pillow is truly amazing 5 stars 10/10 GOOD!! It has an adjustable strap that goes around your chair so you’re not having to constantly adjust and it stays put. Take it in your car, your office chair, on a plane etc.” SOLD, BABY.
6. AirPods Max: I love my AirPods buuuut I also love sleeping on planes without waking up every 30 minutes to jam my AirPods back into my ears. These are beautiful and comfortable and easy to use.

1. Drawer Organizers: Add these to the “little things that make life so much better” category. The 8 section ones are great for underwear (and you can split them into, like, “cute underwear” and “I feel like death” underwear so you can always see what you have on hand).
2. Hanging Organizer: If you’re a member of the regular closet club (you know, like, a 2’x3′ box), these are AWESOME – they free up dresser space and they can store a ton of jeans/sweaters/PJs.
3. Plastic Bag Holder: So simple!!! So cheap!!! So game-changing!!! Turns out that, uh, not staring at a plastic bag filled with other plastic bags does great things for your mental state.

1. Slippers: I asked for these in 2019 after trying out my mom’s and I’ve been singing their praises ever since. I wear these all day every day and they’ve molded to the shape of my foot so they’re sublimely comfortable. 100000/10.
2. Flannel PJ Pants: Every year, Brenda hooks me up with a new set of PJs for the holidays. These pants that she got me last year take the cake – they’re this lightweight flannel material that do an awesome job of regulating temperature (read: they’re still comfortable in the summer). If I could only do one PJ pant for the rest of my life, I’d pick these.
3. Weighted Blanket: I swear by my weighted comforter (fully committed to the weighted lifestyle over here), but I love the versatility of this blanket – throw it at the end of your bed or keep it in the living room for some quick comfort.
4. We’re Not Really Strangers Game: I played this with an ex (post-breakup! Still friends!) and we could not take it seriously – it’s SO earnest – but I could imagine this being a great gift for anyone you’d like to build deeper connections with.
5. Socks: I know socks are historically a joke gift, but I love getting Madewell socks for the holidays!!! I don’t normally buy them for myself (they do seem a little spendy IMO) but they add so much personality to every outfit and they’re a joy to receive. I love, love, love these.
6. Luck Book: I grabbed this book from our office during my first EHD Christmas (can you believe this is my third EHD holiday season?!) and I’ve loved it ever since. It’s a great call for your ~woo woo~ friends but it also feels fitting for anyone embarking on a new journey, you know?

In closing: here’s a shot of Brenda and me at my godmother’s Christmas Eve shindig a few years back. She’s the best!!! I really do love everything on this list…so hopefully you can find something in here for the ones you love, too.
Let’s chat all things practical gifts in the comments – have you given or gotten anything that’s unexpectedly come in clutch? I’m flying back east tomorrow to celebrate the holidays with Brenda and you KNOW I’m procrastinating packing, so uh… let’s GAB, please????

Ryann’s MOTO Reveal: A Moody Multi-Functional Living And Dining Room With A Lot Of Soul

Well, the day has finally come and I am emotional. This MOTO (Makeover Takeover) has been almost two years in the making which means I have been staring at these walls for a the length of a pandemic and then some. Boy am I ready to invite you in. WELCOME TO MY HOME.
In case you’re new here, and before I get lost in the ins and outs of our design, let’s get properly acquainted. I am Ryann the Associate Editor here at EHD and I live in this 1 bedroom apartment with my fiancé Rocky and American Bulldog named Gus. The space you are about to see is our living room and dining “area” that we collectively spend about 90% of our time in. It’s my office, Rocky’s classroom, his therapy office, Gus’s nap and play palace, my occasional workout studio, and basically everything in between. We host Sunday dinners with our closest friends here and it is where Rocky proposed to me last year. That said, this space is so special to us, it’s our first fully furnished apartment together, and we are very excited, anxious, nervous, overwhelmed, and overjoyed to share it with you.
If you have been reading the blog for a while, you might have seen some of my early blog posts dedicated to this space. You may even remember when I contemplated rug options, asked your opinion, and then ultimately bought a multicolored Azilal rug that lo and behold, you will not be seeing in this reveal (although I do still love it and hope to find a place for it someday). You might also recall a blog post where I asked Em to help me frame the pieces making up my gallery wall because I was feeling intense design decision fatigue. All of the posts leading up today point to a few things: that designing a space for the first time is hard, that mistakes or changes happen A TON, and that perhaps I am attracted to far too many styles and aesthetics. But today, I am celebrating the success of getting to this point, of having a “finished” design to share with you all. I mentioned I am emotional because writing about a design Rocky and I are so proud of and get to call home is wildly emotional. There was a time I wasn’t sure if I would ever get here. But here we are so please come along, put on your favorite record, and get cozy. We’ve made this space to feel welcoming and homey and a reflection of both our souls. I hope you like it.

Paint Color | Sofa | Rug | Coffee Table | Wall Rug (vintage) | Table Lamp | Round Velvet Pillow | Red Lumbar Pillow | Black Carpet Pillow Cover | Floral Pattern Pillow (no longer available)
If we go allll the way back to the beginning of 2020, it started with the sofa. Article reached out to me and offered to send one of their sofas back when our place looked like this (ROUGH) and I was overwhelmed with gratitude but aware this meant I would need to start taking my MOTO seriously. Once I pinched myself and realized I was in fact not dreaming, I chose their Texada Sofa without question. My brain has come up with a lot of wild ideas about what to do with this space, but one thing that has remained steadfast is my love for this sofa. It’s really is so special. Everyone who comes over compliments it and most are pleasantly surprised how comfortable it is. Let me repeat that in case you missed it. Folks, it’s SO comfortable and I know that is so important in choosing a sofa. It also works with a ton of styles and I have about 100 mood boards to prove it.

If we are following the timeline chronologically, it is now around March 2020 and we have a sofa. And that sofa is all we have for a very. long. time. I am sure most people get through more than one decision before design paralysis sets in but for me, this was it. What do I do with this perfect sofa and a beige apartment that has about as much architectural interest as the inside of a refrigerator??? This is the point in the story where I make a lot of mistakes. I buy a cheap black tulip dining table from Amazon because I am desperate for more furniture. I buy the aforementioned rug and a cobalt blue pouf. I don’t know what the hell I am doing. This is when I decided to actually pay attention to everything I learned from working at EHD for two years. I went back to my Pinterest board. I looked at the inspiration I pinned in the beginning and then I pinned even more. I pinned inspiration until I saw a glimpse of what I was hoping to create in my own home. What eventually came clear is I was attracted to lived in, welcoming, comforting, eclectic spaces with charm and a lot of personality. I was seeing patterns and dark colors and lots of vintage gallery walls which somehow made the next step obvious: we need to go bold with paint color.
Once we decided to paint the walls a dark green color, we quickly landed on Current Mood by Clare Paint. At first, the thought of painting half of our entire apartment a completely different color was terrifying but something told me I needed to go for it. And guess what? I have never EVER regretted this color. It looks incredible at all times of the day and it facilitates the scholarly library feel we were after. My only regret is not painting the ceiling, which we will likely do very soon. Sara asked if we’ve ever thought about painting it when she came over to shoot, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since so I take that as a sign.

As it goes with any paint color, the hue changes slightly throughout the day and depending on the amount of daylight. During the day it leans a little more blue and towards the evening the green really comes out. I happen to love both shades but the paint swatch Clare Paint sent over was so helpful when we were making the decision. They send a sticker swatch that you can stick and move around different walls depending on the time of day. This helped us REALLY visualize what the color would look like and made our decision extremely simple. Once the walls became this fantastic green, the vision really fell into place. Now the next step was executing our vision. Easy enough, right?

Record Cabinet (vintage) | Floor Lamp | Mirror | Tray (unavailable) | Faux Plant | Gold Vase (unavailable) | Marshall Speaker
WRONG. Well, sort of wrong. You see, to complement the dark moody walls, I knew I wanted to incorporate vintage furniture. I love all things vintage but as many of you know, those one-of-kind pieces that make your heart sing are often expensive. This is a big reason why this makeover took as long as it did to complete. Finding vintage and antique furniture that fit our space, our desired aesthetic, and our budget was laborious and time-consuming. But the good news is if anyone’s handing out awards for most time spent on Etsy, FB Marketplace, & Craigslist I might be a top contender. (P.S. If you want a really great how-to on searching for vintage furniture, check out Caitlin’s guide here).
After many months of obsessive internet scouring, I found this vintage record cabinet. I sourced it from a Etsy seller at first thinking it could be an interesting TV stand. It didn’t end up working as such, and instead became the perfect record console. It actually has a working record player and radio inside so if you were thinking it is helping me overcome my storage woes, think again!! It is not a storage piece but man is it pretty. The wood tone is so rich, I love how it pops against the dark walls, and the brass floral like ornaments make it extremely charming.

With one piece of vintage furniture I am feeling like a real aficionado and this is, of course, when things start to lull. It is also at this point where the vision is hard to picture because too much of what I have is not going to end up in the final design. I had the sofa, console table, and finally made a decision on a coffee table but I needed to make more moves. Eventually I realized the answer was simple, we needed a new rug!
The rug we landed on was gifted from Revival Rugs and it SIGNIFICANTLY helped our design get back on track. I went back and forth about rug size and style, but once the design inched closer to my vision it became obvious the answer was a classic Persian rug. I don’t know why I was against it at first because a Persian rug is like a good pair of jeans–it always looks good and never goes out of style. We could have opted for a smaller rug but I actually love how a large one like this looks in our space. It adds in a layer of cozy and I like how almost all of our living room furniture is touching the rug. It helps separate the living room from the dining area and essentially creates its own zone which is important in an open concept space.

For a while, my vision was to put an ornamental mirror over the sofa. It seemed like the obvious thing to do until I set my sights on this Tulca mirror and asked Lulu and Georgia if they would be willing to send it for my makeover. The curved edge and flat bottom make it the perfect accent for a fireplace mantel which I thought was very charming. Obviously, we don’t have a fireplace so to give it off a sort of mantel vibe, we put it on our record console. At first, I thought we would need to mount it on the wall but when Bowser came over she reassured me it looks great leaning on the console. Hot tip: If you need reassurance on design decisions, get yourself an Emily Bowser.

Finding the right drapery for this space was another challenge. There is a reason we create how-to posts like this, that we all keep going back to for years and years. Hanging curtains is not easy (Rocky will attest to that) and sometimes it’s difficult to find the right readymade length or width or even style curtain even though there are so many options out there. I knew I wanted some pattern for our window treatments but was having a strangely hard time finding the right fit. That’s when Wovn Home entered my life and made the curtains of our dreams happen.
They offered to send us their Euro Pleated Drapes in Striped Oyster and the length and width were so easy to calculate on their website. It is hands down the easiest custom-made process that I have ever encountered and the product was better than we could’ve imagined. We also ordered their roman shades in the same pattern (as you’ll see below), and the two together balance out the space while adding pattern and warmth.

Euro Pleat Drapes in Striped Oyster | Gold Drapery Rod | Tv Stand | Wingback Chair (vintage via Kaiyo) | Red Lumbar Pillow | Blanket by Justin Klegka | Faux Plant | Spaghetti Western Puzzle | Disco Queen Puzzle | Italy Travel Book
I can’t remember when Rocky told me he wanted his own armchair but I do remember thinking, “OKAY SURE BUD! I’ll get right on that.” Truthfully, he was right in that we needed more seating and a vintage wingback armchair did feel like the perfect fit. Once the idea was planted in my brain I began searching Etsy and all my go-to online vintage shops desperately. On a whim, I think I randomly searched for “Gingham Armchair” and this guy from Kaiyo came up. Obviously, I was in love. It was the ideal size and shape and the color was right in line with our color palette. They are based in New York though, so shipping would be pricey to get it to LA. I crossed my fingers and reached out to see if they’d be interested in gifting for this project and they graciously agreed. It is the grandpa armchair that really rounds out our old man smoking a cigar in a library feel and we LOVE it.
Complimenting the perfect armchair is a red lumbar pillow that somehow matched wonderfully and a very cool blanket by our friend and tattoo artist Justin Klegka. He created the design and made about 100 of them so it’s one of those things that is very unique and special to us, and it also became a great accent for this chair.

Beam Bookcase | Candle Sconce | Footed Sewing Box with Handle (vintage) | Magazine Crate
The short wall to the right of our bedroom door was a conundrum for a while. It needed something sculptural but not bulky because of the limited space. Meanwhile, we had a collection of books and magazines cluttering every surface. Some sort of shelving unit was obvious but a traditional bookcase would take up to much precious space. My heart wanted a vintage 19th-century style bookcase to match the Victorian aesthetic but my brain knew it would be too visually heavy. I remember bringing this up to the EHD team and Caitlin brilliantly suggested taking a look at this shelving unit by Room & Board. It mounts to the wall so it takes up the least amount of real estate and the open sides gives it a built-in look. I sometimes wonder what it would look like if we put in two side by side and took up the entire wall, but maybe that’s another question for another day and another blog post ;). In any case, Room & Board sent us this bookshelf and it was exactly what that little wall needed. It holds so many books and the black finish helped bring a modern flair to our design, and ties in all the black accents.

Table (vintage) | Chairs (vintage via House of Palm Shop) | Footed Bowl | Black Vase | Woven Basket | Pagaliacci Print | Copacabbana Menu (vintage)
I don’t think I can properly describe how happy this shot makes me. If you take anything away from this post, please let it be that when people tell you putting together a gallery wall is hard, BELIEVE THEM. This gallery wall has seen more iterations than I can count and it was almost by divine intervention that it finally came together. Now it’s finished (for now) and I don’t just like it, I LOVE it. It may not be your particular style because art is so subjective and I am not blind to the fact that these pieces are specific to Rocky and I’s interests, but that is probably why I love it so much. This wall was our most collaborative effort as a couple and it makes me so happy that we achieved it together. This gallery wall is like our baby!!! Our firstborn at that! It’s very exciting.

Roman Flat Shades in Striped Oyster | Dog with Sausage Print | Map of San Francisco | Blue Tea Towel (similar) | Jesus Print Frame | Saint Lucy and Saint Agatha art print
Our other baby happens to be that fiddle leaf tree. She’s mostly Rocky’s responsibility because I have a notorious black thumb, and if I kill another plant my heart will not be able to take it. We got her a day before the shoot to make sure she was photoshoot ready and now I am very attached. It is true what they say about having living things in your home. It’s healing for the soul to take care of a living thing and have it be a part of the beauty in a space.

Tattoo Man Print | Wooden Cowbell (vintage) | Wood Crates
The table is a 100-year-old antique that I sourced through Facebook Marketplace (and paid $100 for — a dollar per year!) and the chairs are vintage from a seller on Etsy. The chairs were in my design board since day 1 so it feels good that they made the final cut. I love that our table and chairs don’t match because if I didn’t want anything in here to feel uniform or predictable. I want it to feel found and collected and this dining “set” hits that mark for me.

When we have guests over it is really nice to have the armchair angled there towards the sofa so we create a real conversational space. In our day-to-day lives though, we often move it in the corner where the tree is, and lately I’ve been using it as my office chair and Rocky uses it as his therapist chair (as he should). Hot Tip: absolutely use a wingback chair as an office chair! I just pull it up to our dining table and it’s so comfortable. Wildly more comfortable than a desk chair as you can imagine.

Bar Cabinet (no longer available) | Woman Print | Gold Frame (vintage) | Basket Bag | Candlesticks | Long Dripless Taper Candles
That bar cabinet is a piece we’ve had since the very beginning. Sara gave it to us when it arrived to her damaged and the seller offered to send her a new one. We got it so early on that I wasn’t even sure if it would make the final design, but since it is so classic looking I found that it wasn’t worth replacing, nor was it necessary. It pairs perfectly with our dining chairs and provides us with much-needed storage.
The moody woman portrait is a digital print from Etsy that I printed via Artifact Uprising, and I found the frame at an antique shop in Burbank. I think my favorite thing about the design process is “found” things coming together and making a space look beautiful. At times it will feel like nothing is working but then there are days where one new item makes everything make sense. I remember walking into the antique shop looking for a frame for this portrait there it was! The right size and everything. It’s those moments I truly cherish because the other moments, honestly, make me feel like I am possibly losing my mind.

Emily Bowser brought over those extra-long taper candles for the shoot and now I have to have extra long taper candles. They are also dripless and we are not sure how that works (science am I right?) but now I will never go back to non-dripless candles.

If only the dinner table was always equipped with a cheese board by Bowser and natural red wine. The tablescape was put together by Bowser and in an ideal world, I would wake up to this every day (hey Bowser are you game??). Looking at it makes me feel like we are always on an Italian vacation which, if you can’t tell from the design of our home, is exactly where we’d like to be.

There’s us!!!! Look at how handsome Rocky is. Gus is missing because to be honest, having a photoshoot with a rambunctious American bulldog was a little too stressful for me to handle. But scroll to the end to see him and all his glory. He really is the king of the castle.

Two more because I am obsessed with the portraits Sara got of us. We actually never got professional engagement photos and now we’re like, what’s the point? So these are our stand-in engagement photos.
And now, brace yourself for the before and afters:

Thank you thank you thank you for coming along this journey with us. We are beyond grateful. xx

The Link Up: Emily and Jess’ Favorite Christmas Decor Item, A Hack That Makes Freshly Baked Cookies Never Turn Stale, And Some GOOD Early Black Friday Sales

Hello all! We are all gathered here today to chat about something fun: THE LINK UP! We’ve got some super special and lots of practical links PLUS some really great sales happening this week (it’s like Black Friday came early this year) so let’s jump right on it so we can get to the good stuff (we know you’re probably here for the cookie hack so let’s not waste another second).
This week’s home tour is a domino double whammy. First up, their first-ever digital edition is here and features DJ Mia Moretti’s awesome LA abode. It’s VERY calming and it’s fun to see such a lively and interactive version of the space. Then, if you have another second check out a very impressive $32k kitchen reno by This House 5000 (that tile!!)
From Emily: Joy never ceases to amaze me! Her newest book “A Kids Book About Confidence” is out for pre-order and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I think we all can relate to having confidence issues so the sooner we can help/ nurture our kid’s confidence the better. Congrats Joy!
From Mallory: I’m passionate about the idea of a flowy but festive ‘thanksgiving dress’ because ya body needs room to breathe both while prepping your meal and post eating your meal (for obvious reasons). This year I’ve been doing some online searching and love the idea of a corduroy dress with loafers and socks (like they styled it in this Madewell photo) but I’m also never not into a plaid dress on thanksgiving. The other 2 options I have are either a sweater-dress vibe (I’ve tried this one on and it’s SO COMFY) or I might go with a peter pan collar/gingham vibe. Let me know which one you guys like best & also if you plan out your outfits like this or if this is odd hahaha. I’m just very excited to see lots of family again this year and am down to dress UP!!!
From Jess: I’m not someone who is overly worried about my privacy in terms of my phone or computer camera ‘watching me’. Maybe I should be idk? But this little camera privacy slider was in my cart as soon as I clicked the link. Gone are the days of post-its and masking tape. A little more protection never hurt anyone:)
Also From Jess: I have coveted these accordion Christmas trees since I saw them in Em’s house a few years ago. They are so pretty and chic and now I have my own! The green ones have already sold out so I wanted to give you a chance to grab the ivory ones before they sell out too.
From Ryann: This is technically not a link but boy do I have a hack for you. If you bake cookies and notice that they go stale after a few days, you need to try sticking them in the freezer. Frozen chocolate chip cookies taste EXACTLY like cookie dough. Just make sure you don’t overcook them because I don’t think you’ll get the same effect. Perfectly warm and gushy cookies are obviously amazing but I think they are even better frozen. I said what I said! (from Mallory: I had these frozen cookies at Ryann’s apartment and can vouch that this hack works and rocks).
From Caitlin: Since I’m about to head home for a while, I just grabbed two of these smart wifi plugs so I can control the lights in my apartment from the east coast. My building is super tiny and close-knit and my neighbors are keeping an eye out but there’s just something about making my place look occupied at night that makes me feel a little better, you know? They were only $14 and setup is a breeze (even for those of us who have been pretty resistant to the smart home trend :)). My favorite use case in the reviews is from a mom who says she uses the smart plug to control her kids’ gaming systems, ha. Highly recommend if you’re going to be out and about this winter!
Some Sales Happening This Week:Sephora: is doing an early holiday sale that’s 15% off for VIB members and 10% off for insiders. The sale ends 11/15 so y’all better get goin! Use code YAYHOLIDAY and FREESHIP for free shipping. An awesome gift would be this perfume sampler set, an eyeshadow palette like this one, or this drybar blowdryer/hairstyling tool set.
Eclectic goods is having a sale wahoo! Use code EARLYSTART for some 15% off action!! Home decor items make great gifts for family members in our opinion so why not snag some while it’s on sale! Our picks are this marble chain, these vases, and these found bowls.
Material‘s third annual Kinder Kitchens Sale is running through November 30th. Kinder Kitchens is an opportunity to give back to organizations supporting Material’s community. For every discount you receive (up to 20% off sitewide), you’ll have the option to give a donation from your discount to Star Route Farm’s food access work. Star Route Farm, this year’s Kinder Kitchens partner, is an organic farm on a mission to confront the inequities in our current food system through crop donation and investment in an organic regional food movement. In partnership with food pantries, mutual aid groups and organizations throughout New York State working to end food insecurity within often overlooked communities, Star Route Farm directly donates the vast majority of their harvest to those in need. 100% of all donations from the Kinder Kitchens sale will benefit Star Route Farm’s Food Access work. Material is hoping to surpass their donation amount from this initiative last year, which was $20k. Jess has the pan, knives and board and loves them all so much.
Industry West: An EHD favorite that is giving 20% Off Black Friday Sale sitewide plus an additional 5% during their Weekend Flash Sale on Case Goods! Truly their stuff is awesome so go check em out.
Macy’s is starting Black Friday early, so check out their deals here. Our picks would be this air fryer for $60 (originally $135) and this $8 turkey roasting rack (originally $30)…the turkey one is very timely.
Nordstrom has some Black Friday deals going on now through the actual day. Our picks are: The Always Pan set ($45 off!!), APL shoes (Mallory gave these to her mom last year and she loves them…plus they’re RARELY on sale), or this cute smeg toaster that’s 25% off.
Hope that’s helpful for ya to get your holiday shopping kicked off!! ALL OUR LOVE TO YOU AND WE’LL SEE YOU TOMORROW FOR AN EXCITING MOTO REVEAL! xx

Target’s Holiday Assortment Is Here To Make All Our Gatherings Look And Feel Extra Special This Year

Buckle Up, Rudolph. The sled is taking off EARLY and I’m at the wheel. While my campaign to get the holiday season officially stretched from Nov. 1 – Jan 2nd has not been approved by congress, I know I’m not alone in wanting to avoid the “SMASH” of the most fun season of the year (especially for kids) into one short month. I’m a “start slow and grow” holiday decorator, while others might be more of a “wait … then explode”, or a “little here, little there”. Whatever level of “holiday enthusiast” you are, I hope you feel permission to at least think about decorating early to reduce the stress of the crunch and elongate the fun. Luckily America’s favorite store, Target, is ready for any approach, any style, any room, and today we are going to show you a few different holiday looks, and how they have every style for everyone. We are back celebrating with close friends and family so let’s create a festive and warm vibe for reconnection, no matter what your holiday and family looks like.
The Living Room For The Traditional Holiday Enthusiast
Rug | Embroidered Tree Square Pillow | Coffee Table | Brass Metal Vase | Red Berry Stem | Tray | Gold Tub | Large Birch Bundle
Every year I get closer and closer to having my own red and green explosion and I absolutely get why one opts for a more traditional look. It is unabashedly festive, warm, and feels exclusive to this time of year (versus more of a quiet winter look). For this look, you choose your shade of red and green, punch it up with some gold, and light all the faux or real candles. The background can be super simple – it lets everything else pop. I’m all about ambiance and this is how you get it.
Just Add Glow
Loveseat | Throw Blanket | Side Table | Table Lamp | Mirror | Pine and Berry Garland |Golden Leaf Garland | Stocking | Green Mug | Feliz Navidad Mug | Small LED Tree Candle | Large LED Tree Candle
Good Lighting is CRUCIAL especially if you are like me and live in darkness 16 hours a day – switch on your faux trees (on the coffee table – I’ve had those for 4 years) and plug in all the twinkle lights. This is great no matter what style you have – soft twinkle lighting peppered around your room brings a warmth nothing else can.

Bell Tower House | Square House | Brass Sitting Deer | Metal Candle Holders (set of 3) | Taper Candles (set of 2) | Bottlebrush Tree (set of 3) | Bottlebrush Tree Green (set of 3) | Tall Metal Lantern | Short Metal Lantern | Buffalo Check Bin | Woven Bin | Tree Pillow
Lean into Traditional Tree Elements

Golden Leaf Garland | Wondershop Ornament Set | North Pole Door Ornament | Labrador Ornament | Beagle Ornament | Mouse Ornament | Santa Claus with Wreath Ornament | Dog Ballerina Ornament | Dressed Animals Ornament (set of 4) | Reindeer Ornament
Emily Bowser styled this more traditional look with gold garland, red and green with a few playful elements. She shoved red berries into the tree which was a lovely festive (and traditional) touch.
No Fireplace Mantel No Problem

Gold Botanical Tree | Stocking Holder | Pointer with Striped Stocking Hat Christmas Tree Ornament | Calico Cat with Earmuffs Christmas Tree Ornament | Dressed Bear with Gray Scarf Christmas Tree Ornament | Cat Ballerina with Yellow Dress Christmas Tree Ornament
How cute is this light-up stocking holder? You could put it on a shelf like this, on a mantel (obviously), or even a credenza as I have in the past. The good thing is even if you do have a mantel over a fireplace hanging it elsewhere means you can still light the fire without danger).

Standing Deer | Pine and Berry Garland |Golden Leaf Garland | Metal Wreath
We strung lights through the garland and pepper throughout the little houses with tea lights (real or faux) to keep the glow going.

Snowmen Kraft Gift Wrap | Cats with Hats Kraft Gift Wrap | Fairisle Sweater Gift Wrap Green | Rigid Plaid Gift Wrap Red | Gold Wreath Gift Wrap Blush | Red Stockings Kraft Gift Wrap | 1.5″ Metallic Fabric Ribbon | 1.5″ Fabric Ribbon Red Glitter | 2 End Pom Pom Fabric Ribbon

Tray | Green Mug | Feliz Navidad Mug | Small LED Tree Candle | Large LED Tree Candle

Swivel Chair | Pouf | Snowflake Shaped Pillow | Throw Blanket
Before we leave the living room we thought it would be fun to show you the breadth of styles that you can choose from this year – even those of you not into the holidays but want it to feel warm and cozy. And please note that EXCELLENT swivel sherpa chair. And it’s a great scale (not too small). I’m very tempted to get it for the mountain house…

Tree Pillow | Chenille Throw Blanket | Woven Milk Crate | Golden Magnolia Garland | Buffalo Check Bin | Ski Stick Figurine | Bell Tower Cream House | Square Cream House | Large Woven Cream Tree | Medium Woven Cream Tree | Embroidered Tree Pillow | Pom Throw Blanket | Deer Ornament | Pine and Red Berry Garland | Fairy Lights | Black Candle Holders | Rope Taper Candle
The Winter Lover (left) – Not into “Christmas” per se but want coziness? We decked out this one with just warm winter whites, greenery, and glow (how cute are those hanging skis?). On the right, we have the same setup with more red/green and for the not-so-shy holiday pillow lover. Just a switch of the garland and added traditional colors.

Feliz Navidad Pillow | Pom Throw Blanket | Forest Fir Figural Ornament Candle | Golden Leaf Garland | Cream Ceramic Tree | Pink Ceramic Tree | Green Ceramic Tree | Candle Holder (set of 3) | Taper Candles (set of 4) | Bottlebrush Tree Set | Angel Tree Topper | Embroidered Doves Pillow | Faux Fur Blanket | Star of David Brass Figural | Modern Menorah | Short Brass Starburst | Tall Brass Starburst | Cast Brass Single Dove Candleholder | Dreidel Hanukkah Garland | Gingerbread Candle | Stout House Decorative Figurine
Target is always seeking to be more inclusive (and for a large major retailer they are doing a FANTASTIC JOB) so not only is there an expanded selection of Feliz Navidad decor, but also their Hanukkah selection (right) is getting better and better. How sweet is that garland? (And you bet that Target has Santa’s of varying skin tones (see below)).

Christmas Tree | Woven Christmas Stocking Red Stripe | Angel with Pink Dress Christmas Tree Ornament | Feliz Navidad Pillow | Pom Throw Blanket |Tree Collar | Evertson Modern Strap Bench Gray | Angel Tree Topper | Tassel Tree Filler/Ornament | Glass Ball Ornament Set
Before we head into the dining room I wanted to show you their selection of less traditional red and green ornaments and decor. Still clearly VERY festive, but feels more playful and fun (if you are into that) – we are.

Angel with Yellow Dress Ornament | Flocked Onion Ornament | Flocked Starburst Ornament | Wondershop Ornament Set | Pink Bow | Red Ribbon | Metallic Ribbon | Gold Bow

Flocked Deer Ornament | Cat with Coat and Scarf Ornament | Yellow Ribbon | Swirl Ribbon | Pink Ribbon| Green Ribbon
The Dining Room – Multiple Styles, All Festive

Table Runner | Napkins | Maize Charger Placemat | Red Rim Dinner Plates | Red Rim Salad Plates | Serving Platter | Faux Berry Branches | Brass Vase
Those holiday berries are an instant dose of color that is so easy to put in a non-holiday vessel, and all of us on set agreed that the simple red-rimmed plates are just enough “holiday” for most people to get into (I can get more holiday than that but I appreciate the restraint).

For a bit more glam, gold never fails. You can snag yourself some gold candlesticks (how great are those doves) or if you are celebrating Hanukkah this is such a pretty Menorah.

Dining Table | Dining Chairs | Dove Candleholder | Glass Saybrook Set | Framed Curved Lines | Cabinet | Footed Serving Bowl | Wreath | Brass Standing Deer | Bell Tower House | Square House

Table Runner | Tree of Life Menorah | Woven Cream Tree | Bottlebrush Set
I love this setup for a formal dining room that you don’t eat at every night but you want it to be festive and styled out (if you aren’t Jewish you can sub in some branches for a centerpiece).

Rug | Large Botanical Tree | Starburst Figurine | Candleholders | Ceramic Houses

Happy Figural | Ice Bucket | Gold Jigger | Gold Bottle Opener | Gold Strainer | Gold Cocktail Stirrer | Wine Glasses | Goblets | Dinner Plates
That plate/flatware and placemat setup is obviously great for all year long too (we have those placemats and love them – so easy to clean and have held up really well). The blue plates are substantial and definitely feel more hefty and expensive than they are. Excellent job, Target.

Bar Cart | Gold Beverage Tub | Red Berry Wreath | Tree | Snowmen Kraft Gift Wrap | Cats with Hats Kraft Gift Wrap | Fairisle Sweater Gift Wrap Green | Rigid Plaid Gift Wrap Red | Gold Wreath Gift Wrap Blush | Red Stockings Kraft Gift Wrap | Metallic Ribbon | Red Glitter Ribbon | Red Bow
Such a good bar cart with really clean strong lines. Dressed up simply with some gold barware and a tree (how cute is that red pom ribbon). DONE. I do however love how Bowser wrapped the bottles with wrapping paper – certainly not a necessity but a great way to give that as a gift.

Gold Fleck Glasses | Cocktail Shaker | Bar Tool Stand | Oh What Fun Embroidered Napkins | Wood Serving Board| Plaid Kitchen Towel | Fairy Lights | Izze Sparkling Beverage | Mixed Berry Kombucha
In The Kitchen
Pink Ceramic Tree | Cream Ceramic Tree | Green Ceramic Tree | Goblets |Merry Everything Serving Platter | Pink Striped Bowl | Red Striped Bowl | Green Striped Bowl | Gold Vase | Large Serving Board | Round Serving Board | Stripe Towel | Cake Stand
I believe strongly in bringing some holiday moments into the kitchen because you spend so much time in there during the holidays. Give yourself something festive to look at. Replace rarely used things (like on the top shelf) with a holiday shelf-scape (yes, we are saying that now) and pepper in some trees throughout.

Dinner Plates | Layering Plate | Mini Wood Bowls | Green Stripe Rolling Pin | Tree Cookie Cutters | Pink Stripe Pouring Bowl | Red Sanding Sugar | Green Sanding Sugar | White Shimmer Sugar
For all you bakers out there the cookie game is hot at Target this year – really cute cookie cutters, rolling pins, and mixing bowls.

Adding a wreath to a window takes up no functional space, and the round shape against a square window is such a pleasing shape.

Oh, she’s so excited – just look at her! So for all of you ready to get the fun going know that Target is ready for you. Their holiday assortment gets better and better every year, and this is just a small portion of it. It’s in-store and online now. Last year a lot sold out early so, no pressure, but if there is something you LOVE don’t wait too long. Let’s start the gathering, the connecting, the game playing, cookie decorating, and listening to holiday music with our closest friends and family NOW. xx

A Hosting Checklist To Get You All Ready For The Holidays

Emily wrote this post a few years ago and we thought that it would be fun to post it again since hopefully, we are safely gathering this year! Plus the checklist and ‘Mad Lib’ we created are fun tools for you to use and enjoy:) Ok now onto the post.
Some of our best memories happen around the holidays when everyone is under one roof and you are all packed in together having fun with each other. But before those beloved memories can happen you have to make sure to stock up on supplies, swap out the sheets, get some extra toothbrushes, grab them their favorite snacks, clean out the guest bedroom closet to give them some room.
So, to help us all out we decided that it would be fun to pull together a last-minute list to help you get your own home prepped for anyone that might be coming to town in the coming weeks to stay with you. Not every single item on this list is mandatory and by all means you don’t need to create more stress for yourself by trying to cross all of these off, but for those of you who enjoy a list and find it more helpful when it is right in front of you so that you can cross it all off, we have you covered.

Some of my favorites, although COMPLETELY unnecessary. Pillow Spray – I recently got some and love spraying it on my pillow before bed. Fresh Flowers – if nothing else get some fresh flowers or a small bud vase with something from your garden to put on their nightstand, it will spruce up the room and stay fresh during their entire stay. Phone Charger – this is the most important thing that I always need to bring yet I always seem to forget it. An extra phone charger would be very much appreciated by any guest staying at your place.
And because lists are helpful albeit boring, we pulled together a “mad-libs” inspired note for you to pass along to your guest when they arrive. It’s probably overkill, but I would have so much fun filling in all these blanks and tailoring the answers to the person that was coming to visit, and if they haven’t been to your place before it can help give them a bit of a guide to what is close by and around should they need anything during their stay.

To get you started here are a few of our favorites that are still pretty enough to display out after your guests leave. Happy Hosting my friends.

1. Liv Smoke Glass Carafe | 2. Pink Terra Cotta Vase | 3. Lena Black And White Towel | 4. Lidded Amber Glass Jar Crackling Wooden Wick Candle | 5. Feather and Down Pillow (set of 2) | 6. Muse Bath Apothecary Pillow Ritual | 7. Resurrection Aromatique Hand Wash | 8. Matte Terracotta Vase | 9. 9oz Cypress & Pine Textured Glass Seasonal Candle | 10. Modal Bath Towel | 11. Cloche with Matches | 12. Sandstone Soap Dispenser

Brian’s “Cool Dad” Gift Guide: All The Things He’s Been Marketed, Bought, And Actually Really Loves

Here’s a fun fact about us dads (well a lot of us) – We hate shopping, but we love having cool stuff. We want to look good and have all the dope new clothes, but we refuse to go to a mall, or a boutique, or actually like, shop for stuff. We either rely on our spouses to pick stuff up for us like giant toddlers, or we just keep wearing the same thing we’ve worn for the past five years. Annoying right?
Well, lucky for us, the internet has gotten really smart and brought the mall to us. Every other post on my Instagram feed is some hot dude in a fitted jacket doing some cool outdoorsy activity. And it works! Yeah, it’s a violation of our privacy, and yeah it’s creepy to have a company look at all my browsing data, but damn I really want to look like that surfer dude who’s buttoning up his shirt while he puts his longboard away on his vintage Land Cruiser.
I’m kind of a sucker for the ads, but not all of them are winners. So I’ve put together my list of purchases that have actually proven to be winners, so you can spoil your giant toddler this holiday season.
CLOTHING I LOVE TO WEAR ALL OF THE TIME
This one is a little pricey, but I haven’t taken it off since I got it. And I get a ton of compliments on it, which is a rare thing for dudes.

I snagged this tie dye beanie and really love it. But honestly, the Parks Project has a ton of cool gear and the proceeds go to a good cause!

Speaking of tie dye, I like to show a little personality in my sock game, so I got these and will never go back from buying Bombas socks. They’re super comfy and have a little elastic that goes around the middle of your foot that makes them fit like a glove.

Emily had to really push for me to wear a vest. I never thought I was a vest guy, but turns out… I am. I like the throwback vibes of this two-tone vest.

Big fan of blanket shirts. I mean, it’s a shirt made of a blanket. And this grey can match all the grey popping into my beard these days.

For anyone in a rainy or snowy climate, this is a really great waterproof jacket that looks better than most.

I’m still a sucker for some Target deals. I have five pairs of these slim-fit chinos and I love them. See above photo for proof.

Also this is a really nice cardigan from Target.
And here are some more from my favorite boutique:

Every guy needs a good pair of boots to feel cooler than everyone else.

But don’t tell anyone that you can get a much cheaper version that still look good, it’s my little secret:

A soft pair of comfy undies are always welcome.

And you can put it all in here for a night away.
NON CLOTHING THINGS I LOVE
Now for some quick hits for non-clothing stuff!

I’m obsessed with this turntable. It’s great-looking, sustainably made, and it has Bluetooth so you can set it up on wireless speakers!
And store the vinyl here:

They are simple, work perfectly, and Emily likes them.

As some of you know, I’m obsessed with the chef Matty Matheson (check out this post for proof), and make his butter-basted steak recipe when I want to show off to friends. These two items are must-haves for getting rave reviews.

And then to work off all the butter, I hit my bag. This is, no joke, the best purchase I’ve made in the past like, ten years. I was never into boxing, I’d either go for runs or drive to the gym, but the instructors and classes on Fight Camp are insanely good and insanely fast. I was hooked within my first week. Great for busy days, or if you work from home – 20 minutes with Tommy Duquette are like an hour at the gym, I look like I’ve jumped in a pool with my clothes on. It may be a dude-bro thing, but an actual boxer yelling at me through an iPad makes me think I’m in Rocky. There are Bluetooth trackers in the gloves so you can count your punches and track your progress. Literally replaced a gym membership with this setup. It’s the best.
Hope this helps and that you can feel a little more confident (and less stressed) about getting your dad, your dude, a dude in your life a give this year.
