Chameleon vision: Poem ~ '"To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually! How different it is to soak at Harbin Hot Springs, than to realize it in virtual reality'

"To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually! How different it is to soak at Harbin Hot Springs, than to realize it in virtual reality"

Drive them back to the wine-dark taste of home,
The smell of damsons simmering in a pot,
Jam ladled thick and steaming down the sunlight. - Seamus Heaney

To the dance, then the pools,First at actual Harbin, over years,Dancing free, dancing be,Dancing bee, buzzing, its own honey ~This movement-freedom growsWith warmth and energy In concert with the music.
Connecting with dancing begins,Connecting with dancing beings,Singing inside with freedom in rhythm,I delight in this liberation, ~but depends on the music too ~ Blues, Grateful Dead, jamming, Rock & Roll, Make it happen for me, actually.
Heat comes, the music closes at evening's end, and people head to the pools,To cool down, to complement the body-movement jam,With serene soaking under starlight- and the warm waters - ease. These Harbin warm pool waters,This elixir of encompassing body suits ~One's whole being received byThis geo-thermally warmed liquid, ~We like.

Virtually?
Dancing at home - wearing the Glasses -I'm there, and so are you,in the Harbin Conference Center, And people be jamming, this be-music is hop-happening,Virtually.
I start to move here at home,Glasses revealing new openingsthrough which to glide,And around my body goes,Dancing at home, dancing my home.
How Different it is to dance at home in virtual Harbin, ~and cool - a realization.

... "Question:whether 'tis nobler in the mind to sufferThe slings and arrows of outrageous fortuneOr to take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them?"(https://poets.org/poem/hamlet-act-iii...)

Or, to head to Harbin actually or virtually, different it is,To seek and find freedom,By traveling from the SF bay,The way, the Napa Valley Wine way to Harbin,Or to find one's way There, Virtually there, 'as if' and by multimedia,With gorgeous visuals On a screen, currentlyWhat a scream!

Yet beyond this traveling difference -A big difference - this venturing outIn bodymind, locomotively, to move through, To see, to interact with, the world,
The Soaking in warm pool Actually, in waters there,While being in Harbin all around,Communicating silently, communing that is,  with fellow soakers, is wondrous.
The Soaking in one's bathtub,Virtually, from home, Glasses on, digital screens behind the glass, newfangled things,While surround-seeing in Harbin ~Brainwave headset too to comeFor communication, Tan Le's* or
Brainfingers* (only functional when able to relax) or
EEG* ~Still wondrousYet you don't hang out actually ~By mingling silently in warm pool ~Or visiting quietly naked

Sunning on the Sun Deck.Immersive both, in different ways, The warm waters helpmeditation deepen ~Release inwardly deeply ~a relaxation response in both,And all is one in the now,Consciousness changes.Yet there's more space too in the actual Harbin's warm pool than in this bathtub.

How best to understand consciousness, and this consciousness?Subjective-Objective accounts,1st person-3rd person scientific narratives ~In the warm waters, with the Glasses,Re visually observing,And beginning to examine neural processing ~ as sentience, awareness, perception and feeling In the brain the mind, the BodyMind? These neurophysiological e-states Are consciousness.

(And how far does sentience extend down the phylogenetic tree?Won't study this here now at Harbin, Yet Tononi's integrated information theory - IIT - holds promise - 'that consciousness is identical to a certain kind of information' - and measurable as Phi, the symbol for integrated information. How could brainwave headset devices best turn their information gathering inwardly in these regards - and from the Harbin warm pool?)

Qualia, infinite qualities, ('the internal and subjective component of sense perceptions, arising from stimulation of the senses by phenomena' too),Perceived by many, in myriad ways, in many bodyminds? At actual Harbin in the warm pool, with brain wave headsets monitoring the brain, might one be able to study these anew?
At home with Glasses, and brainwave headsets, people could talk more readily adding a language element to the 'subjective,' their 1st person accounts, - and in studying the brain technologically, actually-virtually & physically-digitally, where the 'as-if' virtual experience created by multimedia and perceived in the brain could be digitally developed in virtual brains in a realistic virtual earth for STEMand brain science, And of species and individuals, like you and me, soaking, soaking, soaking in the warm pool at Harbin, in the bath tub at home
in real virtual Harbin,  ... and yet Virtually: How Different it is to Soak at Harbin, than to Realize it in Virtual Reality

And loving bliss neurophysiology,Uniquely Harbin warm pool generatedAs it bubbles up, While soaking?
How to measure this with headsets,Distinguishing even between,Objectively, The relaxation response,The relaxation response in the Harbin warm pool,And brain chemistry of neural cascades of pleasure,
And also then, Subjectively, I say,In words?

And with machine learning, further,On the objective, 3rd person Scientific accounts' side,Could we add cameras to cells, cameras, or wee antennae, to atoms, (have George Church,* Ed Boyden* and Karl Deisseroth* done something like this?)As well as send ontogenetic signals In from the headsetsWhileIn the warm pool,In the bath tub,
at Harbin soaking?
And subjectively, when we're blissing,After releasing into meditation, After eliciting the relaxation response ~ Self reported, ~use language to talk about this?I know it consciously when I'm blissing
in the Harbin warm pool, when bliss is simply bubbling up.So can we measure such,And bring this together with what we say about this ~With our awareness, consciousness that is, in an account of infinite qualities?
Long way to go to measure
integrated information Phi in the brain,To hypothesize this further,And then objectively and 3rd person-wise Observe this scientifically (& consciously) In the brain,But maybe nakedness, Actually, andVirtually,And examining desire,Further, too, will open ways ...
So first the dance, then the poolsThis time, andHow Different it is to Soak at Harbin, than to Realize it in Virtual Reality.

Understanding consciousnessAnd realizing bliss furtherin complement with scientific sentience,Thanks to Harbin.

Dear Rebecca,

I saw your Tweet -
"one of the interesting things about this story is that there is no dispute as to whether this is hipaa compliant (it is) but people are very mad anyway" per https://www.statnews.com/2019/11/11/google-partners-with-major-u-s-health-system-gaining-access-to-vast-patient-data-in-the-process/ ...
https://twitter.com/RebeccaDRobbins/status/1194012092484870144 - posted at the top of Stanford Law Professor Hank Greely's feed - https://twitter.com/HankGreelyLSJU - and wanted to contact you about a realistic virtual earth for everything which MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School is developing. One goal of World University and School is to create online law schools eg https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/China_Law_School_at_WUaS and https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School in each of ~200 countries' official languages to teach (and contribute to writing) law with regards to this single developing realistic virtual earth (think Google Street View with TIME SLIDER / Maps / Earth / TensorFlow / Translate at the cellular and atomic levels, and with avatar bots of individuals and species as in group-buildable Second LIfe, but realistic, and planning, for example, for tele-robotic surgery in WUaS's online Medical Schools). All of this would inform developing legal questions with regards to health data such as that which Google just acquired in 21 states, and which your Tweet points to as well.

For further information about a realistic virtual earth, and CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World Univ & Sch, see, for example, the Law Schools' blog label in my blog here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Law%20Schools.

How best to communicate further about this?

I hope to blog about some of this today as well. Thank you.

Sincerely, Scott

Wondering about the Harbin Hot Springs' gate house ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ ethnographically and this 'Google Starbucks' AI "Auld Lang Syne" episode' below

Am wondering about the Harbin Hot Springs' gate house ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ ethnographically and this 'Google Starbucks' AI "Auld Lang Syne" episode' below, I'll call this, yesterday ... and re questions of Harbin's new database for visitors / people who might be camping overnight, and later staying overnight in Harbin rooms when they get re-built ...  and how this Harbin visitor database is developing. (Could Google be helping Harbin with this? ) And what kind of signals and communication with visitors could Harbin create with this potentially? ... if they could do what I think Google Starbucks did with me yesterday?

And what role could a realistic virtual Harbin play in this (am thinking Google Street View / Maps / Earth with people's smart phones and GPS information)?
Visit virtual Harbin Gatehouse here (there are currently 3 pictures of the gatehouse from different years) ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook  ~

Episode:'Google Starbucks' AI "Auld Lang Syne" episode' on 1/11/19 - "Am curious how to get out of the Google AI loop besides by adding the disclaimer below ... just walked into Google Starbucks, and Auld Lang Syne into Joy to the World started playing ... Don't think I'll contact Peter Norvig about this, but Google usually thinks through how to let end users opt out of this kind of stuff ... so perhaps it's an indication of their not thinking this through ... or a new twist in their company's culture ... (if their AI could put together my smartphone with GPS on it, the name "Scott,' and arriving at this Starbucks and playing Auld Lang Syne ... seems plausible ... ) ... So I turned on this Steeleye Span - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PUogwLKJ54 (1975) -  on my laptop which played "Long Lankin" ... where I find the words to many of Steeleye Span's ballads interesting, and a kind of history as well, and also which share an orientation to freedom from oppression even ..."

Hi M,
Very nice to talk. And your book looks 'lovely and lyrical' - "Emma Hooper’s book about Newfoundland, Our Homesick Songs, is ‘lovely and lyrical’" ... https://www.thestar.com/entertainment/books/reviews/2018/08/03/emma-hoopers-book-about-newfoundland-our-homesick-songs-is-lovely-and-lyrical.html ... I don't think such a lovely and lyrical book has been written about St. Kilda. But maybe a realistic virtual earth will opportunity to create lovely and lyrical 'ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy' as a new form of 'writing' even :) ...

Just sent David the following:
Hi David,
Great to hear you're super busy with work in the DC area. I just spoke with my mother, and it looks like she'd like to head to Washington for possibly 2 nights, and she mentioned the 26th and 27th, so if we can find an Air BnB with your helpful thinking, and if you're going to be in town it would be really great to see you. (My mother is also hoping to see her cousin Karen Leighty, and visit some museums in your amazing city for this - all interesting from my perspective as well). Hoping we overlap as well.
Cheers, Scott

Looks like Catherine Ashcroft (whom I mentioned living in the NW of England), whose 1 Youtube  I admire much in particular, playing the Uilleann pipies -

Catherine Ashcroft & Maurice Dickson (Mochara) - Táimse im' Chodladh/King of the Pipershttps://youtu.be/P40YOU8ggJk - with her Mochara musical partner, is 'with' Steven Johnston, another piper / musician and reed maker, another musical partner/boyfriend - and in the NW of England. Catherine and Steven appear to make a good couple. Perhaps I will connect similarly here in the SF Bay Area with a good fit!
Am curious about the psychology of my bagpiping ... and the ways a teacher will open ways in these regards ... Possibly Finlay .... who's teaching I enjoy ... on with recording for learning here ... as I seek a partner who might be both musical, as well as listen in unique connecting ways ... and possibly what I texted you recently ...
How was your day? One hope re upcoming piping House Concert. SINCE it's near Open Band at St. Clement's in a nice house, if a 28 yo musician came, might she come play in on Mondays, (might she have gone to Oberlin or high achieving college), might someone like Barbara have talked with her, might we even play together in other contexts + ... and might we have coffee ? :)

PS Just announced to the WUaS Board that next Saturday is the Annual Meeting for WUaS.

PPS I also just emailed a number of UC Berkeley Anthropology faculty members with regard to introducing the Laotian speaker from Friday evening with UC Berkeley Prof. Aiwha Ong, a formed professor of mine, and originally from Malaysia, see - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/11/drooping-she-oak-allocasuarina.html  - and perhaps this will open ways for WUaS to collaborate with the University of California.

Looking forward to seeing  and traveling with you over Christmas, M!

Hi Ma,

Nice to talk again last night.
After your mentioning in Emma Hooper's book "Our Homesick Songs" those Newfoundland towns that ran out of fish and therefore food and had to be evacuated, and our also talking about St. Kilda (Hirta) off of the west coast of Scotland and its evacuation, and my Univ of Edinburgh's Master's thesis in 2003-2004 on St. Kilda as virtual place, I wanted to find out more about what a "Factor" (in Scotland) is, since I had mentioned that MacLeods at Dunvegan were the Factors of St. Kilda. So a Factor is a property manager - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factor_(Scotland) ... and St. Kilda had a Factor's house I just learned here - https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/learning/features/stories-from-st-kilda ... which all makes more sense now (compared with the 'tax collector' idea - see my 2012 description below).
Per your question last night, here's a description of my engagement with St. Kilda academically in 2003-2004 from 2012 in my blog (https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2012/09/macleod-piping-stories-traditions-and.html):

Scotland 2003-2004
I lived in Scotland in 2003-2004 studying at the University of Edinburgh in the School of Celtic and Scottish Studies on the very picturesque George Square at the University of Edinburgh.
Gary West, who does the BBC Pipeline Radio show, was my adviser.
My focus of study in Edinburgh was St. Kilda, the island archipelago off the west coast of Scotland, for which the MacLeods were the factors, or tax-collectors. I was interested in studying St. Kilda as a kind of virtual place on the world wide web, which people could visit at the National Trust for Scotland's web site. I wanted to think through whether people were visiting a virtual site via the internet.
So when I went to visit actual St. Kilda, which is the largest island archipelago at the greatest distance from Britain, which you can only get to by hiring a boat, I also went to Dunvegan Castle again, for the 3rd time.
There's no ferry or anything to St. Kilda, it's so remote. St. Kildans, many MacLeods included, were birders. They made their living by rappelling from the steep cliffs of St. Kilda, and capturing Gannets, Puffins and Fulmars, by hand I think – at least back 2000 or so years.
And St. Kilda, was evacuated by the British government in 1930, when its population had dwindled to around 30 people. At its most populous, St. Kildans numbered around 180 in the late 1700s.
What the MacLeods as factors came over a rough sea annually to collect was a share of these oily birds.- https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2012/09/macleod-piping-stories-traditions-and.html -

(And with regards to how you signed off last night, I'm reminded that fish and food metaphors for women seem in the air here in California as well. I hope in my whistle-blowing that California law will be observed with regard too to the sex trade re these questions (re Stanford too?). Let the sex trade operate under legal auspices, for example, in Nevada and the Netherlands; what goes on under-the-radar culture or discourse-wise sometimes comes to light eventually, and it can be media-attention that can limit or lessen the illegal sex trade, for example. Ethics' questions seem 'operative' here as well. And perhaps in a realistic virtual earth / realistic virtual Harbin, with avatar bots, societies, countries and legal systems will be able to address such questions anew - and re the actual-virtual, physical-digital, and even re law enforcement on-the-ground for example. In my experience, the illegal sex trade brings people down and creates un-great cultural processes ... and can make criminals and victims of people too. Becoming an adult in the 1970s, I'd like to envision a good flourishing society world ... free and and improving ... and to echo IBM's Jim Spohrer re questions of process re Ethical AI, the law is a good place to start. California law has probably improved over the decades as well, even as its limits were stretched ... and can be smart in its regulatory processes. Women are neither food nor fish (and I wrote a feminist theology thesis at Reed), and yet a realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs may be also a place to explore sexual freedom and creativity as well (but perhaps not Stanford), in addition to developing actual-virtual research approaches to ethnography and STEM. I'm not clear at this stage how all of us will represent such questions iteratively via ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy in a realistic virtual earth for history and anthropology yet (but books and film have paved the way for centuries). )
Your book looks interesting, Ma, ... and good luck getting it read by Wednesday!
I was envisioning a realistic virtual earth in 2003-2004 when I was studying at the University of Edinburgh, pre Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic field work as well. My field site was - https://www.nts.org.uk/visit/places/st-kilda - but back in 2004, and as nascent place you could visit online. So I visited the 360 degree QuickTime surround-videos of specific places on the virtual St. Kilda web site, looked at the pictures of the wildlife, and listened to some bird sounds, and importantly, looked at comments from the online guest book where people had also left their email addresses. As part of my study, I contacted this people with a questionnaire, to inquire if and how they had visited the NTS online St. Kilda virtually as place.  My Edinburgh MSc thesis - http://scottmacleod.com/MacLeod%20Physical%20and%20Online%20St%20Kilda%20A%20%20Comparison%20of%20Senses%20of%20Place%20MSc%20Dissertation%20University%20of%20Edinburgh.pdf
Looked up too the Scottish clan system to learn more, and found https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_clan and https://www.scotclans.com/scottish-clans/the-clan-system/ and https://theculturetrip.com/europe/united-kingdom/scotland/articles/a-brief-history-of-the-scottish-clan-system/ but would appreciate a more pacific interpretation ... Appreciating too that Scotland in these recent centuries is a very civil place, and that the crazed-in-part clan system of yore appears to be history.
All identity-questions in part (and re Manuel Castells' "The Power of Identity," his middle book in his Information Age trilogy, "The Rise of the Network Society" being the first book in the series) I recall too that you and Dad went to the Isle of Skye for your honeymoon in these regards, pre-dating my interest in piping and Scottish Country Dancing in my teens in Pittsburgh, for example. ... On with circulating and seeking a life-partner, perhaps via my outgoing-ness and re meeting friends in groups (here in individualistic California).

Hi M, (and friends),

How's your day going? And how are you?
Am curious how to get out of the Google AI loop besides by adding the disclaimer below ... just walked into Google Starbucks, and Auld Lang Syne and into Joy to the World started playing ... Don't think I'll contact Peter Norvig about this, but Google usually thinks through how to let end users opt out of this kind of stuff ... so perhaps it's an indication of their not thinking this through ... or a new twist in their company's culture ... (if their AI could put together my smartphone with GPS on it, the name "Scott,' and arriving at this Starbucks and playing Auld Lang Syne ... seems plausible ... ) ... So I turned on this Steeleye Span - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PUogwLKJ54 (1975) -  on my laptop which played "Long Lankin" ... where I find the words to many of Steeleye Span's ballads interesting, and a kind of history as well, and also which share an orientation to freedom from oppression even ...
As I think through my piping album for next year 2020 re forward momentum here ... am exploring saying something creatively rather than just playing well and inspiringly these 'Gobies' "Honey in the Bag" (tentative title album / CD) tunes - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/20... - but possibly adding lyrics, of potentially that I wrote, eg. this beginning "Boston Tea Party" song ... https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/10/tea-camellia-sinensis-bring-eric.html ... but I may keep CD simple and just play the tunes. However, I may also simply play some of the above tunes slowly on SSP while seeking to sing to some of these SSP tunes that could be good fits. This could get me actively exploring in new ways musically and word-wise in preparation for my album ... I continue to enjoy this folk rock from the early 1970s as a possible thing to come in conversation with.
Fairly big Scottish focus in blog post today - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/11/northern-gannett-virtual-college-stem.html - as well as quite creative virtual science focus, as well as ethics' focus, actually.
Fondly, Scott

Hallo Peter,
Maybe at the same time you could explore VIRTUALLY making the first PC ever from 1974 from a kit, the Altair 8800 (named after the dog or a stellar destination in the Star Trek TV show), and which I teach about in my course - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html

I've put in hard drives and RAM into MacBook's before, but never any further self-computer building.
Searched too via Google online for build your own laptop, but nothing professional came up.Who makes your computer kit / DIY computer? Is it a laptop? Is the manual with which to build your computer a booklet, or is it online? Are there design-manual simulations we could develop in a realistic virtual earth - as a virtual design manual with 1-1 physical-digital correspondence potential?
Another WUaS idea ...
Shall we
eventually get such CR-rated top laptop  computers at WUaS for distribution to English-speaking German students for autumn 2020+ and via the WUaS bookstore, refurbished to start? ... brainstorming wise
Cheers,
Scott

to PeterHallo Peter,

Hier sind 'ratings' mit Preisen fuer 12-13 inch Laptops von Consumer Reports, zu Deiner Information und als Referenz:
Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch With Touch Bar (2019, Core i5) 80/100 - $2000
LG Gram 13 8th Gen79/100 - $1,120
Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (2019, MVFH2LL/A) 73/100 - $1,100
Apple MacBook Air 13-inch72/100 - $900
Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Core i7)70/100 - $1,335
Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 (Core i7)69/100 - $1,300
Samsung Notebook 9 Pro (2019)69/100 - $1,100
Dell XPS 13 (XP S9380 - 7066SLV)68/100 - $1,860
HP Spectre Folio68/100 - $1,400
Microsoft Surface Pro 6 (Core i5)68/100 - $800
Asus ZenBook UX331UA-AS5168/100 - $800
MSMSMSX LenovoX Samsung
There are a couple further categories of computer ratings (eg 14 inch Laptops etc) in this December 1, 2019 issue of CR.

But for a view from America's west coast (and CR is based in NY, and we all own it), and if one chooses one of these machines from a few years ago, one often can find good value.
I got a refurbished 2014 Apple MacBook Air 13-inch laptop some years ago, and it works fine, and is so far very reliable. Vielleicht hast du bereits einen neuen Computer bekommen.
Cheers, Scott

Am curious with regard to this Harvard panel about the QUALITY of translation and re "Z inspection ..." ... Translation quality would have significant impact in any hypothetical "Z-inspection ... " (but although I understood Frank-Walter Steinmeier's live presentation in German, I can't compare here because there's an overdub in English) ... and cross-ecosystem (a Roberto Zicari idea ...) ...
And re my IBM CSIG Universal Translator talk - https://youtu.be/f48b0Z4VffQ - re World Univ & Sch plans for translation - 05 May (2016)Scott MacLeod“A Universal Translator as a Cognitive System, beginning as a Guidebook with Test”World University and SchoolSlidesRecor http://cognitive-science.info/community/weekly-update/ - (between Wikidata's 300 languages and between all 7111 known living languages), focusing on quality for such hypothetical ethics' AI questions (and 'inspections' !) would be potentially valuable.
With this example -

Drooping she-oak (Allocasuarina verticillata): Laos World University and School . . . online Malaysia WUaS too ... [Nov. 8] An Ethnographic Study on Tourism and Heritage Value in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR (UC Berkeley) * * * * In Google Poly (library of virt

Sunday, November 10, 2019

Hi Symonkeo And Professor Aiwha Ong, (and Profs. Graburn, MacCannells, Nader, Michalak, Rabinow, Scheper-Hughes, Briggs),

I'd like to introduce you, Aiwha, here to Symonkeo SENSATHITH THOMAS. Symonkeo just gave an excellent ethnographic talk in the UC Berkeley Anthropology department's Gifford room on Friday:

An Ethnographic Study on Tourism and Heritage Value in Luang Prabang, Lao PDRhttp://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?m=1103050552852&ca=606e6168-21c0-4613-80ca-7b196a700b98

Here's the beginning of Lao World University and School -
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Laos_(Lao_People%27s_Democratic_Republic) - eventually with CC-4 MIT OCW in Laotian. I've inquired with Symonkeo if she would teach an Ethnography of Tourism course online here in Laotian, but WUaS isn't that far along yet.  (And here's a related blog post about WUaS planning for the IB high school diploma, which World Univ & Sch seeks to develop in Laotian with time- https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/11/wattles-acacia-spp-ib-school-in-modesto.html). And here's some related information about the Stanford Law China Guiding Cases Project - https://international.stanford.edu/info/news/china-guiding-cases-project-stanford-law-school and https://cgc-store.law.stanford.edu/pages/about . WUaS may seek to create something parallel with Laos - and create an online Malaysia Law School at WUaS as well. And here's the beginning China Law School at World University and School: https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/China_Law_School_at_WUaS (accessible from - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Law_School by way of comparison, not yet in Chinese. Shall we create Malaysia and Laos World University and School, and beginning with https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/translated-courses/
Unfortunately, Aiwha, the MIT OCW-centric wiki Malaysia World University and School in Malaysian - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Malaysia (planned in Malaysian languages) - isn't that far along yet (like Laos World University and School, planned online in Laotian). WUaS is planning online Bachelor, Ph.D., law and medicine (MD) degrees in Malaysian, and beginning with licensing with CA's BPPE for Bachelor and Ph.D. degrees in English.
I've blogged about Symonkeo's talk here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/11/drooping-she-oak-allocasuarina.html . And WUaS also seeks to create a realistic virtual Laos (think Google Street View with time slider with avatar bots + much more) for actual-virtual ethnographic research - and with regard to my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg - where this is the beginnings of a realistic virtual Harbin Hot Springs (think again Google Street View with time slider +) accessible from ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook . With regards to all of this, WUaS is seeking to facilitate developing a realistic virtual earth for everything - and with regards to a new social science method and theory I'm developing and calling ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/ethno-wiki-virtual-world-graphy.
I was a reader, Aiwha, in your course "Globalization and Gender" in the year 2000, as well as in Professor Graburn's "Tourism, Art and Modernity" course at the time, and was a student of Professor Nader, and Professor Brigg + http://scottmacleod.com/papers.htm. When talking about my planned ethnographic project in 2000, Aiwha, I remember you mentioning something like "Harbin is that nudey place, isn't it." (My first actual-virtual Harbin ethnographic book "Naked Harbin Ethnography: Hippies, Warm Pools, Counterculture, Clothing-Optionality & Virtual Harbin" and all my books so far are Harbin Hot Springs-informed).
Thank you again for your very edifying talk, Symonekeo. Aiwha, if there happens to be a video of Symonkeo's Gifford room presentation, it's worth viewing.

The Tourism Studies Working Group is pleased to announce
An Ethnographic Study on Tourism and Heritage Value in Luang Prabang, Lao PDR
    Symonekeo SENSATHITH THOMAS (Ph.D)
Former student at Rikkyo UniversityFormer Lecturer at National University of Laosssymonkeo@gmail.com
Friday, 8 November 2019, 5:00 PM  - 7:00 PMGifford Room, 221 Kroeber HallUniversity of California, Berkeley
This research identifies the relationship between heritage and tourism based on an ethnographic study in the town of Luang Prabang in the Southeast Asia country of Lao PDR. This relationship refers to the emotional affinity derived from the cultural artifacts within the context of their traditional culture and religious practices. The main part of this research discusses tourist impressions of Buddhist religion, experienced by tourists in Luang Prabang town. In addition, this research attempts to provide a new perspective on interaction between tourists, local residents and local culture to create a 'heritage value', a new term in the field of cultural heritage tourism. This research shows how 'heritage value' contributes to the local economy by attracting tourist revenues that then sustain the local culture itself, resulting in both tourism development and heritage preservation. This research depicts the local life styles and how they utilize traditional houses, local architectures and handicrafts from variety of ethnic groups to create 'heritage value'.
Dr. Symonekeo Sensathith Thomas recently relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area from the People's Democratic Republic of Lao (Laos) where she served for 14 years on the faculty of social sciences of the National University of Lao as both a lecturer in the subjects of cultural tourism and international relations and as the deputy head of the research division. In 2014 she was a visiting professor at Mahidol University, Thailand, and Sejong University, South Korea. In addition to teaching, Dr. Symonekeo frequently presents papers in international conferences on World Heritage cultural sites and trains and consults for international organization including the World Bank, UNESCO and international non-governmental organizations.
Dr. Symonekeo holds a Ph.D.in Cultural Heritage Tourism from Rikkyo University, Japan (2010-2013) where her dissertation topic was: "Ethnographic Study of Heritage and Tourism in Luang Prabang, Laos". She also received a Master of Arts degree in International Relations from Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan (2007-2009) and a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, the Institute for International Relation of Vietnam (1999-2003), specialized in the field of international economics.

Hi Symonkeo, Juliet, Greg and All, (Symonkeo, can you please forward this too to Greg?),

Thanks again for your excellent and far-reaching talk on Lao 'heritage value' re the ethnography of tourism there:
An Ethnographic Study on Tourism and Heritage Value in Luang Prabang, Lao PDRhttp://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/render?m=1103050552852&ca=606e6168-21c0-4613-80ca-7b196a700b98

Juliet, which Wilden book title about the Belgium psychoanalyst, Jacques Lacan MD, did you mention again - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Wilden? Here's the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy's entry on Lacan - https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/lacan/
Symonkeo, does any form of psychoanalysis, or psychoanalytic MD psychiatry, exist in Lao that you know of - and in the Laotian language? It can be a boon in times of rapid modernization.
Greg, here's some information about the Stanford Law China Guiding Cases Project - https://international.stanford.edu/info/news/china-guiding-cases-project-stanford-law-school and https://cgc-store.law.stanford.edu/pages/about. And Greg, what's your email address/LinkedIn (my LI is https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottgkmacleod/)?
Thanks again, Symonekeo, for your edifying Lao ethnographic 'heritage value' talk!
Best, Scott

Wattles (Acacia spp.): "International Baccalaureate Online courses for the Diploma and Career-related Programme" * * * Another interesting aspect about the Modesto Public High School's International Baccalaureate IB degree - https://mhs.mcs4kids.com/stude

Just found this online, and am exploring how WUaS might collaborate ...

Dear Larry,
Another interesting aspect about the Modesto Public High School's International Baccalaureate IB degree  - https://mhs.mcs4kids.com/students/programs/international-baccalaureate - is that it's probably free to students, dovetailing with WUaS's CC-4 MIT OCW-centric free-to-students' degrees' focus.
And although WUaS may first license with CA's Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education BPPE for online Bachelor and Ph.D. degrees, first in English, and would therefore be considered a private university in US terms, WUaS could also conceivably collaborate somehow with CA public schools at the high school level - and to offer the IB degree online, first in English - and thereby offer the IB degree online.
And if this were possible, then the state of California could help design the online information technologies to make the IB degree online real, and for STEM subjects especially.
Please remember that the Quaker woman I talked with some years ago near the Berkeley Friends' Meeting House, who taught in Quaker/Friends' and IB schools in Maryland (another synergy that already exists in the IB world), said that the IB at its minimum is 3 lower level classes and 3 upper level high school classes.
And I think that the IB degree offers academic and intellectual opportunities to students that might not exist otherwise in a public high school, that it's therefore a standard, that it's known all over the world, and that it's already in multiple languages.
Am not sure where the IB stands in going online with its related Pamoja Foundation, but the above collaborations suggest that collaborations here are possible too, such as between WUaS / state of CA / and Pamoja, for example. Look, just found some already existing online IB courses - https://www.ibo.org/programmes/diploma-programme/dp-online/diploma-programme-courses-online/ - via Pamoja. Let's connect state of CA with Pamoja through WUaS!
And WUaS might get a lot of our high school graduates into great universities (eg Harvard / MIT / Stanford ), compared to building something just from MIT OCW High School resources - https://ocw-origin.odl.mit.edu/high-school/ ...
Sincerely, Scott

Ashish is a high achieving Calif high school student and scientist who may be heading to a great college, and I think his sister is a Harvard undergraduate already. Am curious to build on, at WUaS IB high school, Ashish's Modesto IB HS relationship with the state of CA eventually. And it would be fascinating if he chose WUaS for college.

These IB courses could become even more high quality, as well as interesting

in a realistic virtual earth for learning ...

if WUaS could dovetail CC-4 MIT OCW High School courses with this ...

if WUaS could develop Chemistry, Physics and Biology IB courses in realistic virtual earth for learning, from home ...

All 7.5 billion people, each a Wikidata Q-item number for

1) wiki Universitians in 7,111 known living languages, and matriculated students in all ~200 countries,

2) Avatar Bot Electronic Medical Records, with genetic therapies

3) Universal Basic Income EXPERIMENTS (and to alleviate poverty), and

4) a single family tree for genealogy research as in WikiTree, and for aggregating DNA samples too

M:
Glad too to be in touch yesterday and today with 2 new Swedish friends in Sweden through the Wikidata office hour yesterday morning (in Telegram):

Magnus (Sälgö)
and
Carl-Johan (Sveningsson)
...both are sympaticos, smart and familiarly connectable in a normal way (not always the case in some Wikidata / Wikimedia circles ... or in California ... am curious how to build better sociality into my life ... but recognize George's realism here too ... )
World Univ & Sch is in Wikidata, a "back end" structured knowledge database for Wikipedia in 300 languages, which WUaS is in too.
Am exploring much re World Univ & Sch in Wikidata with them re very big ideas, and they're both coders, and probably fairly settled Wikidatans / Wikimedians' in Sweden ... They're interesting big idea conversations ... (enjoy:)

Here's the Telegram App conversation with Magnus:

Magnus Sälgö, [05.11.19 10:04]
salgo60@msn.com is my.... I am not sure if WIkitree is the best place...
+ they have a big user community
- quality could be excellent to very very bad
- they have an old WIki platform
+ they have an excellent technical person Ales who creates report every week of quality
-/+ the owner of WikiTree Chris is nice / shy / and not so technical

I spent 2-3 years at WikiTree before joining Wikidata.-..... I had today little dialogue with Ales because of a POC I did see https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T236340 that crashed his checks
