California energy officials warn of possible blackouts this summer for up to 4 million people

California had blackouts in 2020 when a heat wave meant there was insufficient power available as the sun went down and renewable sources shut down. Now California’s energy officials are predicting a repeat this summer if anything unexpected happens.California energy officials on Friday issued a sober forecast for the state’s electrical grid, saying it lacks sufficient capacity to keep the lights on this summer and beyond if heatwaves, wildfires or other extreme events take their toll…
In an online briefing with reporters, the officials forecast a potential shortfall of 1,700 megawatts this year, a number that could go as high as 5,000 MW if the grid is taxed by multiple challenges that reduce available power while sending demand soaring, state officials said during an online briefing with reporters.

Catholic churches receive ‘credible threats’ that pro-choice protesters will disrupt Mother’s Day Mass

A historic Catholic church in Washington, D.C. warned parishioners on Friday that there have been “credible threats” of protesters planning to disrupt church services this weekend. The warning came after a pro-choice abortion activist group called on Americans to disrupt church services this weekend.
In an email sent to the church body, St. Peter’s Church on Capitol Hill said that church leaders have been alerted that “there is a credible threat of our Masses being disrupted this weekend by protesters.”

“All are welcome to join us for Mass at St. Peter’s. Even though the disruption of the celebration of the Holy Mass is a grave offense to every person of faith, we will strive to continue worship of God and exercise fraternal charity in any case,” the email said.

UNC Journalism program has accreditation downgraded after failing to hire Nikole Hannah Jones

You may recall that last year NY Times journalist and 1619 Project author Nikole Hannah Jones was denied tenure by the University of North Carolina last year after she was offered a position at the school:In late April, the university announced that Ms. Hannah-Jones was being appointed to the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism at U.N.C.’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media. She will start as a professor in July, while continuing to write for The Times Magazine. Instead of tenure, Ms. Hannah-Jones was offered a five-year contract as a professor, with an option for review…
The website NC Policy Watch reported on Wednesday that U.N.C.’s board of trustees had declined to approve Ms. Hannah-Jones’s application for tenure. A spokeswoman for the university, Joanne Peters Denny, said in a statement that “details of individual faculty hiring processes are personnel protected information.”…

Biden Copies Trump Proposal To Refill Oil Reserves — And Spends Way More Doing It

The Biden administration announced plans Thursday to refill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) two years after Democrats blocked the Trump administration’s similar, but cheaper proposal.The Department of Energy (DOE) said it would initiate a long-term SPR replenishment plan involving a purchase of 60 million barrels of oil that would likely occur in 2023, according to the announcement. President Joe Biden has ordered a 50-million-barrel SPR release in November, a 30-million-barrel release on March 1 and a 180-million-barrel release on March 31 to combat rising gasoline prices.The SPR, designed to store 714 million barrels of crude for emergencies, is currently at less than 600 million barrels, its lowest level since 2002, according to the Energy Information Administration. A release of 180 million barrels is expected to take the stockpile to about 400 million barrels, its lowest level since the 1980s, by the end of the year. “As we are thoughtful and methodical in the decision to drawdown from our emergency reserve, we must be similarly strategic in replenishing the supply,” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said in a statement Thursday. National Democrats Release Target Memo Lowering Expectations for 2022

The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC), the state Democrat-aligned campaign arm, no longer thinks it can flip the Arizona and Pennsylvania legislatures after pledging to do so earlier in the cycle.
The DLCC released an updated version of its state legislative priorities, which illustrates the trouble they are heading into in the midterms and shows that the Republicans have momentum heading into November.
The new target memo from the state Democrat-aligned committee looks different from the original target chambers state Democrats released in March 2021. It showed that the DLCC no longer believes it can flip legislative chambers in Arizona or Pennsylvania.
The two states are now listed on the memo under “Reverse Republican Advantages” rather than “Make a Play for Vulnerable GOP Majorities.” The memo cites the “political environment” as a reason why the DLCC can no longer flip the two states.
This comes after the DLCC repeatedly targeted Pennsylvania and Arizona and touted their momentum in both states throughout last year and even in March.

Trump Obliterates Biden In 4 Words After Calling MAGA ‘Most Extreme’

Former President Trump on Thursday told Fox News Digital that “MAGA is saving America,” and slammed President Biden for being “divisive” when he called MAGA the “most extreme political organization that’s existed in recent American history.”

“MAGA is saving America,” Trump told Fox News. “Our country is going to hell. MAGA is saving America.”

“Inflation, incompetent withdrawals from Afghanistan, leaving hostages horribly wounded, soldiers, $85 billion of military equipment – MAGA is saving America,” Trump continued.

The former president said the U.S. is “no longer respected throughout the world.”

“Ukraine should have never happened,” Trump said, declaring that “Russia would have never gone into Ukraine” under his leadership.

“MAGA is saving our country,” Trump said again.

Trump’s comments are in response to Biden, who, reacting Wednesday to the leaked draft opinion signaling the Supreme Court’s intent to overturn Roe v. Wade, slammed Republicans, saying the controversy is “about a lot more than abortion.” Biden said the “MAGA crowd” is “the most extreme political organization that’s existed in recent American history.”

OPEC Tells Biden To F‑Off

At a meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on Thursday in London, the oil cartel voted on a modest production increase and announced that the organization is not to blame for the disruptions and price increases since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February.
OPEC also blamed the threat to demand on China for its recent draconian coronavirus lockdowns.

OPEC blasts through another meeting and sticks with current production plan of +432k b/d increase. Oil nearing $110 again and nat gas $8.40.
