Mayorkas’s tough week on Capitol Hill

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas had a difficult week.
In appearances on Capitol Hill and in television interviews this week, Mayorkas struggled to answer questions about the border crisis. He now faces greater skepticism from lawmakers just two weeks from when the pandemic health policy Title 42 is set to expire, pending a court order, which is expected to worsen the migration problem.
The trouble for Mayorkas began when he claimed on Fox News Sunday that migrants who don’t have valid asylum claims “are promptly removed from the United States.”
Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, the top Republican on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, challenged Mayorkas on the claim in a hearing Wednesday, stating that 85% of asylum claims are ultimately denied, yet DHS agency U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement removed fewer than 4% of noncitizens who should have been deported last year.
“According to information we’ve received, about 1.2 million unlawful migrants have been issued a final order of removal. Those are people who go through the asylum process and their claims are adjudicated, and they are denied. You only deported 59,000 people last year. That would be the lowest percentage in the history of the country,” Portman said. “With these numbers, how can you say that asylum-seekers whose claims were denied are ‘promptly removed’ from the United States?”
Mayorkas defended the low number of deportations, which are roughly 20% of what they were when he worked at DHS as dep …

Soros floods cash into Arkansas prosecutor race

A political group funded exclusively by liberal financier George Soros has dumped over $100,000 in support of a former public defender running to become a prosecuting attorney in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Soros is the only contributor to the Arkansas Justice and Public Safety PAC, which was founded in mid-April around the same time the financier donated $321,000 to the group. The PAC has since spent about $100,000 on research, polling, and consulting work, and in late April, the group purchased $40,000 worth of television advertisements in support of Alicia Walton’s bid to serve as prosecuting attorney in Pulaski and Perry counties, the Arkansas Times reported.
Walton said during an interview in April she wants to empower victims while also providing a pathway for redemption for offenders.
“I have not only worked extensively within the criminal justice system, but I have also been a crime victim,” Walton told Black Consumer News. “With that experience in mind, I will work to empower victims, dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline, provide a pathway for offenders to seek redemption, and provide more diversionary programs for those with mental health and substance abuse challenges. It is time for the criminal justice system to work for all of us.”

Soros’s intervention in the lead-up to the May 24 primary provides a significant boon to Walton, who has raised less than $20,000 for her campaign, according to the Capital Research …

St. Louis hopes to boost its population by importing Afghan refugees
The city of St. Louis, Missouri hopes to grow its population by luring Afghan refugees to settle in the city so that it can offset its 70 years of population loss. The Associated Press reported that there is an “aggressive effort” within the city to attract large swaths of the more than 76,000 Afghans who fled their country after its capital city of Kabul was ceded to the Taliban.Currently, the city is home to about 600 Afghan refugees and another 750 are expected to arrive later this year. The Associated Press reported various city and community leaders are “hopeful that over the next few years, thousands more will decide to relocate” to St. Louis and “offset seven decades of population loss.”Reportedly, city officials see courting Afghan refugees as crucial to beginning a process of urban rejuvenation similar to how the arrival of Bosnian refugees spurred along a similar process in the 1990s. Why Energy Prices Are Projected to Increase 50% in 2022—After Doubling Last Year | Jon Miltimore
Sometimes I have to remind myself how good we Americans have it because—let’s face it—there is a lot of bad news out there, particularly on the economics front.
Inflation, which hit 8.5 percent in March, gets the most attention, and rightly so. Less attention has been given to financial markets. The Nasdaq just had its worst month since 2008 (the year of the financial meltdown). The S&P 500, meanwhile, is having its worst start to a year since the Great Depression.
And then there’s food and energy prices. There’s no way to sugarcoat the data—which is a shame, because there’s no place Americans feel the pinch more. (We all eat and use energy.)
In its latest Commodity Markets Outlook report, the World Bank projected commodity prices will remain higher for years to come. Perhaps most alarming is that the multilateral bank projects energy prices will soar 50.5 percent this year—after nearly doubling in 2021. The rise in energy prices, the Wall Street Journal reports, has been “the most significant since the early 1970s.”
Food prices, meanwhile, which rose 31 percent last year, are projected to increase 23 percent this year. Needless to s …

Democratic congressman calls conflict in Ukraine a ‘proxy’ war

Moulton introduced H.R. 7187, which would give the president power to sell a number of American assets for humanitarian funding in Ukraine.
The United States is engaged in a proxy war with Russia through the conflict in Ukraine — and it’s a war the US has to win, says Democratic congressman Seth Moulton. He made the comments on Fox News on Tuesday.“At the end of the day, we’ve got to realize we’re at war. We’re not just at war to support Ukraine,” Moulton said, “but fundamentally, although somewhat through a proxy, we are at war with Russia.”BREAKING: Democrat Congressman announces the US is fundamentally in a proxy war with Russa pic.twitter.com/v8JSIH3Z2c— Ultra Poso ? Moulton currently sits on the House Armed Services Committee and plays a key role in advancing legislation that deals with foreign conflicts. In the past, he’s been advocated for US support of the Ukrainian defense against Russia and has lent his vote towards additional financial aid to their armed forces. Most recently, Moulton introduced H.R. 7187, which would give the president power to sell a number of American assets for humanitarian funding in Ukraine. His comments, made during a conversation with Fox personality Brett Bair, were part of a larger interview alongside fellow committee member, congressman Mike Turner, a Republican from Ohio. The two representatives expressed an expectation that Congress would continue to support Ukraine financially and through the provision of arms.Moulton pointed to Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent trip to Ukraine as an indicator that support from Congress would remain strong. For Moulton, this isn’t just Ukraine’s fight. He told Bair that, concerning support for Ukraine, Congress was largely unified.“This is a bipartisan effort in Congress…on supporting the Ukrainians and really working to not just hold off the Russians, but to crush them in Ukraine.”“I think that will continue,” he said. JUSTICES TARGTED BY LEFTIST

A group of radical pro-abortion activists gathered outside the homes of multiple U.S. Supreme Court Justices on Saturday to protest the Court’s expected decision to repeal Roe v. Wade.
According to a draft opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito leaked to the media on Monday, the Court is poised to overturn the landmark abortion rights case.
Protesters have taken drastic measures, like blocking church entrances and now showing up on the doorsteps of Supreme Court Justices’ homes.
Protesters marched in front of Chief Justice John Roberts’ home and reportedly chanted, “Keep abortion safe and legal.” Other chants included, “Pro-life is a lie, you don’t care if people die.”
Protesters also drew images of hangers in chalk on the street in front of Roberts’ home.

Unruly air passenger incidents fall after mask mandate lifted
Check out what’s clicking on FoxBusiness.com. The rate of unruly passenger incidents on airplanes fell to the lowest level since 2020 a week after a federal judge ended a government mask mandate for public transportation, the Federal Aviation Administration said Wednesday. The FAA said there were 1.9 reported incidents per 10,000 flights during the week ending April 24, compared to 4.4 reported incidents per 10,000 flights the prior week. The FAA said previously about 70% of reported incidents involved the enforcement of masking rules. The FAA said the average rate in the last three months of 2020 was 2.45 incidents per 10,000 flights. The national mask mandate was struck down on April 18 by a federal judge in Florida. In January, the FAA implemented a zero tolerance policy after noticing a disturbing increase in unruly passenger incidents on flights. Under the policy, the FAA issues fines to disorderly passengers instead of warning letters or counseling. The agency said the policy helped reduce the incident rate by more than 60% since it was enacted. UNRETIRED… JOE DID THAT!

Americans are leaving retirement due to inflation and a tight job market, according to data released last month by job platform Indeed.
According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the number of retired seniors surged from 28.3 million in February 2020 to 31.6 million in October 2021, however, higher price levels and other economic challenges are now forcing Americans into “unretirement.”
Indeed reported that as of March 2022, roughly 3.2% of workers who were retired a year earlier are now employed.
Indeed said that a decrease and subsequent rebound in unretirement has precedent. During the Financial Crisis of 2007 to 2009 — the last major recession to impact the United States — workers were enticed out of retirement as the labor market became more lucrative.
Yet consumer price inflation rates after the Financial Crisis mostly stayed within range of the Federal Reserve’s long-term 2% target — briefly spiking to nearly 4% in 2011 before returning to relatively stable levels. The aftermath of COVID-19 and the lockdown-induced economic trouble, however, has been marked by once-in-a-generation inflation surges. As of March 2022, consumer price levels are increasing at an 8.5% rate.
