Biden Releases 118K Border Crossers into U.S.

President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released nearly 118,000 border crossers and illegal aliens into American communities in the month of April, federal data shows.
New court filings by Biden’s DHS reveal that the agency released a foreign population larger than the resident population of Biden’s hometown of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Scranton has a population of less than 77,000 residents.
The filings note:
For the month of April 2022, DHS reported that the total number of applicants for admission under Section 1225 released into the United States, paroled or otherwise, was 117,989, a figure reflecting CBP’s 110,207 total releases across all categories for the month of April 2022 … combined with ICE’s 7,782 total releases of noncitizens transferred to it from CBP following their application or encounter at the southwest border for the month of April 2022. NYT: Where have public-school students gone?

Over one million students have evaporated from public school rolls over the last two years, the New York Times reported late yesterday. “No overriding explanation has emerged yet for the widespread drop-off,” writes reporter Shawn Hubler.Really?
In New York City, the nation’s largest school district has lost some 50,000 students over the past two years. In Michigan, enrollment remains more than 50,000 below prepandemic levels from big cities to the rural Upper Peninsula.
In the suburbs of Orange County, Calif., where families have moved for generations to be part of the public school system, enrollment slid for the second consecutive year; statewide, more than a quarter-million public school students have dropped from California’s rolls since 2019.
And since school funding is tied to enrollment, cities that have lost many students — including Denver, Albuquerque and Oakland — are now considering combining classrooms, laying off teachers or shutting down entire school …

Sweden Signs NATO Membership Request

STOCKHOLM (AP) – Sweden on Tuesday signed a formal request to join NATO, a day after the country announced it would seek membership in the 30-member military alliance. In neighboring Finland, lawmakers are expected later in the day to formally endorse Finnish leaders´ decision also to join.
The moves by the two Nordic countries, ending Sweden´s more than 200 years of military nonalignment and Finland´s nonalignment after World War II, have provoked the ire of the Kremlin.
While most NATO members are keen to welcome the two countries as quickly as possible, Turkey has potentially complicated their accession by saying it cannot allow them to become members because of their perceived inaction against exiled Kurdish militants.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry is warning this week that Sweden’s plan to apply for NATO membership will “inflict considerable damage to the security of Northern Europe and Europe as a whole.” The remark comes as Moscow continues its bloody invasion of Ukraine, which has put Sweden – and its neighbor Finland, which shares a border with Russia – on heightened alert. “Sweden’s accession to NATO will inflict considerable damage to the security of Northern Europe and Europe as a whole,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “The Russian Federation will have to take response measures, both military-technical and others, to curb the threats to its national security which arise in this context.”

The world’s richest man unloaded on President Joe Biden in a podcast interview Monday, seeing the same vacant stare that millions of Americans see in the commander in chief. Musk was critical of the near-record high inflation, pointing to Venezuela as a warning that things will get worse if the U.S. government continues printing money

As for Biden, Musk suggested a commonly held view that the president’s handlers are really running the country.

The Biden administration is deploying US troops to Somalia. President Biden signed off on the plan on Monday, along with a plan to target some dozen leaders of Al Shabab. Trump had withdrawn troops from the war-torn region near the end of his time in office. About 450 troops will be sent to Somalia, on Africa’s east coast.The troops being redeployed to Somalia are Special Operations forces, and the Pentagon has also been given authority to target leaders of Al Shabab, a terrorist group affiliated with Al Qaeda, according to The New York Times.Officials spoke to the Times on condition of anonymity, saying that this essentially “will revive an open-ended American counterterrorism operation that has amounted to a slow-burn war through three administrations.“Biden pulled the US out of a long war in Afghanistan in August 2021. The withdrawal, promised by outgoing President Donald Trump, was widely criticized as disorganized and chaotic. It resulted in the deaths of 13 US service members. “The decision to reintroduce a persistent presence was made to maximize the safety and effectiveness of our forces and enable them to provide more efficient support to our partners,” said National Security spokeswoman Adrienne Watson. She called the decision by the Trump administration to withdraw troops “precipitous.“The concern is that Al Shabab poses a threat to US outposts in the region, including an attack on a US airbase in Kenya in January 2020.
