Sue Storm – Evolution of a Fantastic Four cover

Found this in my old sketch folder. I have a mountain of sketches lying all over my studio. I often let my daughters use the old sketch papers to draw their stuff, Recycle is the mantra in our house. :-)
Anyway, here’s a funny behind the scene story about this Fantastic Four #608 cover. I turned in the original sketch cover idea (the far left image) to my editor who approved right away. As I was drawing the cover, I felt the whole thing was “off” and I wasn’t too happy with it. So I drew another version of the cover idea (center piece) and I still felt it was “off”. I thought the second version was worse than the first version – the figure is stiff and everything was awkward. The more I tried to fix it the worse it got. It was a nightmare.
So I walked away from the drawing. Completely abandoned it. I actually stuck the two cover sketches into my mound of old sketches and tried to erase them from my memory. After a few days later, I came back and started from scratch. And the final version of the cover was born. (Far right image.)
Sometimes the best course of action in art is abandonment and restart with a fresh eye.

Wonder Woman Bondage Sketch Cover

Ha! Made you look.
I just got back from a wonderful weekend at Big Wow Comic Fest in San Jose, California. It’s one of my favorite shows of the year because it’s run brilliantly by my friend, Steve “Law Boy” Morger and crew, and it focuses on comic books and comic book creators – unlike the bigger shows which are now celebrity autograph conventions. (I also got to meet Claire Wendling, one of the best artists in the business who made a super rare appearance outside of France.)
Anyway, I literally came from the airport and need couple of days to unpack, unwind, and get back into the work groove. So until I get back into the swing of things, here’s a Wonder Woman sketch cover I did recently for you to enjoy.

First and foremost, I want to thank all my fans and decent strangers who stood with me and supported me throughout the week. You guys and gals are the reasons why common sense will prevail over knee-jerk overreaction.
There are things you need to be outraged about. There are things you need to rally against. There are things you need to call out and fight with all your might. But an unpublished drawing of a pretty fictional woman by an artist to show to his fans on his website is not one of them.
The outcry over my drawing by the misguided few is nonsensical and simply stupid. It is an outcry over an imaginary slight, and an outcry of the desperate who want to make a name for themselves in the industry. It was fascinating, amusing and appalling to see the overzealous critics of my art use faux outrage to air their personal demons and imagined injustices in the world. I can’t stress enough what utter nonsense and a waste of energy this whole event has been.
There are many real problems that deserve the attention and effort this make-believe scandal has unfairly received, problems I want to help fix. I’m going to use the publicity generated by this Spider-Gwen drawing and create something positive out of it by showcasing one of the more deserving charities – House of Ruth, a charity that helps battered women and broken families find safe haven in this world of threats and violence.
I am donating the money generated by my Spider-Gwen drawing to House of Ruth, a real charity that deals with and solves real problems.

The comic convention season is upon us. Last week, I kicked off the convention season by doing Orlando Megacon. (Fun show. Thank you, Beth and Christine.) This week, I’ll be flying out to San Jose, California for Big Wow Comic Fest! No rest for the wicked.
Boy, do I have ton of goodies lined up at the show.
1) I’ll be selling my OUTRAGEOUS sketch covers. Check out the latest Wonder Woman original art I just finished. I’m only drawing a very limited amount. So first come, first served. (I’m in Artist Alley table 503.)
2) I’ll be teaching my FREE drawing class on Sunday, featuring the awesome cosplayer, RIKI RIDDLE! We’ll study her anatomy and draw her as she pose for the entire class.
3) I’ll have couple of published art pieces for sale at the Art Auction this year. So don’t miss your chance to own a rare original art of mine.
4) If time permit, I’ll be drawing live on stage and raffle off the art piece when finished.
So don’t miss out, gang. Come on down to San Jose Big Wow Comic Fest this weekend and enjoy one of the best comic conventions in California. http://bigwowcomicfest.com
