Patagonia Ice Glaciers, Argentina 2015

Wow. Simply wow. Today, Steve Morger, my trusty art dealer/lawyer/spiritual advisor/pimp, and I went to see the ice glaciers at the Ice Glaciers National Park. The park is southwest of El Calafate mountain and the town we’re staying at. (We’re staying at the lovely Blanca Patagonia hotel.) Words can’t describe the incredible sight and the grandeur of the ice glaciers. It’s simply awe-inspiring.
We only had time to see the one, Glaciar Perito Moreno. The height of the ice wall is between 40-60 stories high and about 3 miles wide. Steve and I just sat in the observation areas and stared at this colossal natural structure in wonder. We literally sat for couple of hours watching the massive ice melt and break off into the lake. The sound of ice breaking off is like that of thunder. The explosive cracking sounds echo throughout the valley and the ice glaciers itself. And the colors of the ice glaciers is other-worldly and magical. The sunlight dances off the surface like spotlights causing parts of the ice to glow eerily with various shades of blue. Sometimes the sunlight causes the ice glaciers to glow within the structure.
You can not feel touched in some profound way after seeing something this massive and majestic. All I know is that when I get home, I’m going to paint what I saw and try to recapture the beauty of the Patagonia ice glaciers.

Argentina Comic Con – Report

Frank Cho in Argentina November 2015. Click thumbs to view
Argentina Comic Con was, in a word, fun. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the fans are simply fantastic. Beautiful country with great weather all weekend long.
However, the flight over to Argentina was long and a giant pain in the ass because UNITED AIRLINE SUCKS ASS!!! My flight from Baltimore to Houston was delayed for 1.5 hours. But no worries, United Airline was holding my connecting United Airline flight from Houston to Argentina since 16 people were scheduled for that Argentina flight. So, United Airline in their infinite wisdom sold my first class seat from Houston to Argentina, because my Baltimore to Houston flight was delayed and thought I wasn’t going to make my connecting flight from Houston to Argentina, even though they were HOLDING the flight so the Baltimore to Houston flight people could make it.
When I checked in to board my connecting flight, the lady told me that they’ve RESOLD my first class seat and the only seat available was a middle seat in coach section. WTF?! They resold my first class seat because they DIDN’T KNOW I was going the make the connecting flight, even though they were HOLDING the flight to ensure people made the connecting flight. Now instead of returning my first class seat to me and downgrading the guy who bought my seat and refunding his money, United Airline bumped me down to coach for this 10 hour flight.
Needless to say, Steve, my lawyer, will have some words with United Airline when we get home.
Now, the Argentina Comic Con was fun but we were on a bit of an odd relaxing schedule. We didn’t have to be at the table until 1:00pm everyday so our entire morning was free. Mostly I spent the morning catching up on my much needed sleep. However, we did spend some time walking around Buenos Aires and visited couple of landmarks.
The first day Steve Morger and I visited Buenos Aires art museum which was great. Got to see two paintings by two of my favorite artists, William Bouguereau and Velazquez. Next day, we were joined by Mark Texeira and visited the famous Buenos Aires tourist attraction, La Recoleta Cemetery, where all the rich and famous people are buried. We visited the iconic Evita’s crypt which was pretty underwhelming compared to some of the stunning and beautiful burial structures all around.
My convention schedule, like the building, was packed. I did hour long live drawing demo everyday followed by several hours of autograph sessions. We were busy from start to finish. So busy I forgot to take pictures of the show. The weekend just flew by. At times, the crowds were overwhelming and too much to handle mentally but everyone was super friendly and polite. Each day was capped with long leisurely dinner with Marv Wolfman, Steve Morger and Mark Texeira. The final night was concluded with a fun entertaining dinner with the staff and all the guests at a big fancy Mexican restaurant. I was lucky enough to sit between Chad Coleman (Tyree of the Walking Dead) and his funny handler, David Guc. We bantered and traded verbal jabs all night. Chad and David were absolutely funny and good people. I hope to share another meal with them at our next convention together.
Now, I’m off to bed. Steve and I are flying out to Patagonia area to see the great ice glaciers near the Antarctic Circle. This time, I’m definitely going to take pictures.
