Vying for Talent

This year Authentic Jobs has seen some of its strongest months ever in its nearly five-year existence. Things are definitely trending upward in the creative industries, and we've seen our competitors also showing positive gains.

Many of you reading this are gainfully employed or have no troubled finding your next freelance project. But the increase in companies hiring means more of these companies are vying for you, the talent star, to keep their products and services competitive.

Because of...

Adobe Launches "We Love Apple" Ad Campaign

Adobe Launches "We Love Apple" Ad Campaign:

Erictric:

Upon clicking the ad, the user is presented with the following open letter from Adobe's founders:

'At Adobe, we believe that the open flow of creativity, ideas, and information should be limited only by the imagination. Innovation thrives when people are free to choose the technologies that enable them to openly express themselves and access information where and when they want. Everyone loses when technological barriers impede the...

iPhone as a Controller for iPad Games

iPhone as a Controller for iPad Games:

Please don't show this to my boys. Oh forget it, I'll probably show it to them before you do. (This totally reminds me of Super Off Road, which ate up too many hours of my spare time growing up.)

Email Bankruptcy

Email Bankruptcy:

If you've emailed me in the last few months and haven't seen a response, Fred Wilson's explanation for declaring email bankruptcy could very well be my own. As much as I try to respond to nearly every email I receive, I echo Fred's thoughts:

I hate it but I cannot operate without it. I have gotten hundreds of suggestions on how to become more efficient with email and I have adopted many of them. But the more efficient I get with email, the more of it that comes in.

One of ...

Sony Developing HD Camcorder with Interchangeable Lens

Sony Developing HD Camcorder with Interchangeable Lens:

Speaking of solving problems, this concept could serve the average video enthusiast like myself rather well. I have a Canon 7D as well as a Canon HG10. I still find myself lugging around the HG10 more than I thought I would, as it's more portable than the 7D, has auto-focus, and less expensive to replace if lost or damaged when going places.

So, this all means I sometimes carry two HD video cameras with me. Sony's concept would allow me t...

Never Miss the Keyhole

Never Miss the Keyhole:

Brilliant concept. I can hear Aaron Copland's "FanFare for the Common Man" playing somewhere in the distance, as Junjie Zhang's concept solves a problem every single one of us has had.

Working Dad's Office on a Budget

Photo of Cameron's home office

Cerentha Harris recently interviewed me for Herman Miller's Lifework. The site has become a near-daily visit for me in recent months.

In my responses to Cerentha's questions, I discuss my current workspace and share a few photos of what I refer to as "a working dad's office on a budget." As the sole provider for a family of 6, it's important to keep costs under control. Hence, some of the items in my office include a refurbished 27" iMac, speakers and a glass desk that I've had since my first ...

Facebook's Gone Rogue; It's Time for an Open Alternative

Facebook's Gone Rogue; It's Time for an Open Alternative:

Ryan Singel, writing for Wired:

It's time for the best of the tech community to find a way to let people control what and how they'd like to share. Facebook's basic functions can be turned into protocols, and a whole set of interoperating software and services can flourish.

Think of being able to buy your own domain name and use simple software such as Posterous to build a profile page in the style of your liking. You'd get to...
