Facebook is My New Boatcar

Facebook is My New Boatcar :

Blaine Cook, whose argument is similar to Ryan Singel's article for Wired:

Instead of offering a carefully constructed vehicle that offers amazing social experiences, [Facebook has:] created a clumsy boat-car that can never truly compete with more focused sites….

While no one will ever be able to overcome Facebook's advantage on Facebook's terms, just as no one was able to defeat Microsoft on Microsoft's terms, it's downright easy to create better social...

Flash vs. et al: Filling In the Gaps

Flash vs. et al: Filling In the Gaps:

Jonathan Snook:

These new [HTML5:] features do negate some of the need to use Flash; however, I'm reluctant to think that these few features will be the death of Flash. There are simply too many use cases out there for which HTML5 does not serve. Hulu's reluctance to embrace HTML5 is very much case in point. Chat Roulette would be another. Or tinychat. Or Adobe Connect.

HTML5 just doesn't have the same breadth of features as Flash. That's not to say...

Vying for Work

Yesterday's post was decidedly about companies vying for talented individuals. What about individuals vying for work opportunities?

Check out this job hunt success story, as Gizmodo explains it:

Alec Brownstein wanted a job in advertising, so he made pages that showed up as the first result when several big New York creative directors Googled themselves. He got interviews with nearly all of them. Yeah, it's pretty brilliant.

Bryan Veloso, a "guy who doesn't do much client work anymore, but i...

Don Quijote Didn't Ship

Don Quijote Didn't Ship:

Seth Godin:

I know, I know, I'm supposed to be the guy who says, "go for it!" but the fact is, most of the time the choice to take on impossible odds, to challenge the entrenched monopolist is the work of the lizard brain. After all, if you dream the impossible dream and go after the thing that can't possibly work, you don't have to worry about being criticized, you don't have to worry about the responsibility of shipping or serving your customers. After all, it was...

New Programming Jargon

New Programming Jargon:

Bugfoot: A bug that isn't reproducible and has been sighted by only one person.

Duck: A feature added for no other reason than to draw management attention and be removed, thus avoiding unnecessary changes in other aspects of the product.

Ghetto Code: A particularly inelegant and obviously suboptimal section of code that still meets the requirements.

Chillout Song

Chillout Song:

zefrank:

I received an email from a woman named Laura, who had recently moved to a new city for a new job.

She was overwhelmed with anxiety and asked me to write her a song to help her calm down.

I wrote a sketch of a chorus and quietly asked some people in my audience to record themselves singing along while wearing headphones.

Few people engage their readers as well as zefrank.
