A Proposal To Go Where No NASA Logo Has Gone Before

A Proposal To Go Where No NASA Logo Has Gone Before:

I always enjoy logos whose design is a cue for the product or service it represents, and this concept is a perfect example.

Redesign vs. Realign

Redesign vs. Realign:

Cameron Chapman offers updated commentary on my original article, published almost 5 years ago. In particular, I can endorse this recommendation, politician-advert-style:

As far as exactly when a client should realign their site, the answer is as often as necessary. It should become a regular habit to review what's working on their site and what isn't, and to make adjustments as necessary. If goals aren't being met, continuous tweaks to the functions, structure...

Fanboi's Lament: Falling Out of Love With the iPad

Fanboi's Lament: Falling Out of Love With the iPad:

Rik Myslewski, writing for The Register:

I've taken it on business trips for note-taking and email, have had no problems with its much-maligned keyboard, and even play the occasional game. But I'm spending less and less time with it. As a fanboi, I'd like to say that the jury is still out, but I'm afraid that the most important evidence—that I'm less frequently using the li'l guy for either business or pleasure—is in. My iPad is clearly...

Kate Bingaman Burt Switches to Tumblr

Kate Bingaman Burt Switches to Tumblr:

Really liking the theme (Scaffold) she's based her design on. You might recall Kate's name from our Around the World layer tennis match.

ESPN 2010 FIFA for iPhone

ESPN 2010 FIFA for iPhone:

Just 10 days until the first game. ESPN's app is a fairly solid experience for tracking scores, news, schedules, and the like. The New York Times reviewed several other apps, some of which also run on BlackBerry and Android.

What's interesting to me is that for the FIFA 2006 World Cup, SMS and the mobile web were the primary means of following scores and updates. In 2010, nearly all of us with something other than a Nokia will probably track the same with an app...

"I've Changed My Mind About The iPad"

"I've Changed My Mind About The iPad":

Fred Wilson:

Our iPad is our family computer in way that the kitchen macbook never was…. It feels less like a computer than any computing device I've owned. It's easy on me in a way that the other devices are not.

Drum Lessons by Mike Johnston

Drum Lessons by Mike Johnston:

Stumbled on this guy via iTunes yesterday. I've opted to use the iTunes link (above) because you need to watch the episode "Crashing on the 'a' of 1" if you're into drumming—it's clear Mike is not only an incredible drummer but a really entertaining instructor, too.

Alternatively, you'll find much more at mikeslessons.com.

Wired on iPad: Just like a Paper Tiger

Wired on iPad: Just like a Paper Tiger:

Oliver Reichenstein's review of the Wired iPad app is anything but positive. Concluding with a quote from Adobe that "the future of magazines is now" comes Oliver's closing remarks:

No, it's not. The future is never now. And the future of journalism is definitely not a stack of banners spiced with videos, exported from a paper layout program. You need to try harder.

I can't disagree entirely with the points made in this article. Merely transferring...

The Design Cubicle

The Design Cubicle:

A fantastic redesign by Brian Hoff; a suitable example of the reasoning behind the design:

Even if living on the bold side of things isn't for you, try at least one thing different in your next work and build around that idea. Without push[ing:] boundaries the world around us remains stagnant and lifeless.

Also check Trent Walton's write-up on creating the logo entirely with CSS and @font-face.
