The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us (Animated)

The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us (Animated):

The audio comes from a talk by Dan Pink, author of A Whole New Mind, given at RSA. The animated video, however, is by illustrator Andrew Park (thanks to Austin Kleon for finding that out).

It all makes for a very interesting media experience. I watched the 11-minute piece totally engaged.

Love the layout of these, not to mention the content they springboard over to. See also vol. I, vol. II, and vol. III.

The Evolution of the World Cup Ball

The Evolution of the World Cup Ball:

Photographs by Jens Heilmann. Click each to enlarge.

What may be really interesting to some of us is that these photographs were taken with a vintage-style, large-format analog camera. Fast-forward to 3:40 in this video to see it in action.

Firefox 4 to Add CSS3 calc()

Firefox 4 to Add CSS3 calc():

Paul Rouget, Mozilla:

This feature hasn't landed yet in any Firefox tree but work to implement it is underway.

Firefox will support the CSS calc() value, which lets you compute a length value using an arithmetic expression. This means you can use it to define the sizes of divs, the values of margins, the widths of borders, and so forth.

Ace.

HTML5 "Why You Should Care" Cheatsheet

HTML5 "Why You Should Care" Cheatsheet:

It's more conceptual than technical, but if you need a good primer for yourself or to share with others, this may do the trick.

Good vs. Great(er) Design

Good vs. Great(er) Design:

I'm not typically fond of publishing my slides without the additional context provided by audio or video from the presentation, as my slides aren't meant to stand on their own. But I'll do it anyway. This PDF contains slides from the updated version of my "Good vs. Great Design" presentation, given recently at LessConf and HOW Design Conference.

From the looks of its blog, MODE looks like a really creative place to work. They've got offices in Charlotte, North Carolina, and partial relocation assistance is among its list of job perks:

B&H Video Tripod Buying Guide

B&H Video Tripod Buying Guide:

Tripods, also known sticks in film lingo, are a different beast when it comes to video vs. photography. Don't make the mistake of assuming a tripod built for photography will also work for video. This guide explains a few things to look for when purchasing a tripod for video.

You can also watch "Gear Pt 2" (day 1, session 4) in Vincent Floret's HDDSLR Cinema Workshop. He explains several of the same principles discussed in B&H's buying guide.

EchoSign Digital Signature Service

EchoSign Digital Signature Service:

It's 2010. I really can't imagine any reason why we should be printing, scanning, and emailing documents that require a signature. Or worse, faxing. I used EchoSign recently, and it seems like a pretty solid service. Thanks to Ben Bodien for the suggestion.
