We’re in This Together {Invite}

Feeling overwhelmed by all the COVID-19 talk? I hear you, it’s A LOT! Inhale, exhale.

Join me THIS Monday, March 16 for a (free) Zoom video call from 11-11:30am ET where I’ll share some tips to help us cope with anxiety and handle being homebound. Details below.

In the interim, here’s a few thoughtful pieces on social distancing, working from home, mental health, and managing anxiety. I especially love this poem by Lynn Ungar.

And I’ve compiled some ideas on how to use any found time: cook, read, nap, check in with those who live alone (and those who don’t—everyone needs love right now), virtually visit these 12 famous museums, do a puzzle, write, make hand sanitizer, learn something new, do your taxes, clean the house (and those closets), put on a favorite song (love this one!) and dance, meditate (mp3s over in Treasures), organize, do some digital clean up of old photos and files, play in your art journal, repot plants, update your finances, paint your nails, bake vegan cookies, compile a list of those things put off until there was more time, foster or adopt an animal from the shelter (they’re the BEST company), roll out your yoga mat and go (videos over in Treasures), spend quality time with fellow housemates, soak in the tub, play a game, or . . . you get to decide!

I know you already know this, but let it bears repeating: take those vitamins, avoid touching your face (it’s constant, no?!), stay hydrated, exercise, get good rest, stay informed (not obsessed), and use rose-scented soap to enhance the never-ending hand washing experience.

Sending so much love and I look forward to connecting Monday, March 16 *and* Sunday, March 22 for our free one-hour gathering at 8pm ET, TDJ Live. Bisous. x

What We Can Control

[I wrote this for yesterday’s Love Note and had an inkling that it deserved a spot on the blog, too]

It’s a tricky time. After three years of online classes and planning to attend the final pieces of a Veterinary Social Work certificate program at the University of Tennessee next week, it was just canceled. Yep, poof!

And yet it’s going to be okay. Although I’ve lost a lot on non-refundable travel expenses, I’ve also gained nine days back. The conference will be rescheduled, I’ll get my certificate at some point, and I’ll make my way to Knoxville when the time is right.

This virus has thrown a wrench into so many people’s lives. Not just the physical effects of the virus, but all the changes in day-to-day functioning. Yes, I’m washing my hands more than usual, noticing an uptick in anxiety in the air, and handling numerous scheduling fall-outs, but otherwise it’s life as usual.

As avid planners (I think you know who I’m talking to . . . yes, YOU), the unknown takes a toll. Should I go visit family? Should I work from home? Should I go to this small gathering? Should I plan my upcoming birthday trip? Should I use public transportation? Should I stock up on bath tissue? The questions go on and on.

And the challenging thing for us planners is that it’s all out of our hands.

I try to remind clients (and myself) that the only thing we have control over is the way we react to things. That’s it. And, let’s be honest, that’s really hard most of the time.

Deep breaths help. Practicing STOP helps (Stop, Take a Breath, Observe What’s Happening, Proceed with Awareness). Surrendering expectations helps. Knowing there will be unexpected schedule shifts and inconvenience helps. Practicing acceptance helps.

Let’s navigate this time with gentleness. There’s no one to blame, we’re doing the best we can, and we’ll get through this. Promise. Bisous. x

Tranquility du Jour #482: Clutter-Free

Tracy has always referred to herself as “obsessive compulsive delightful,” but who knew she could turn that trait into a booming business? While working for a major television director in Los Angeles, Tracy discovered she had the ability to see through any mess and clearly envision a clutter-free space. Coupled with keen time-management and organizational skills, Tracy soon found more and more people were asking her for help. Before she knew it, dClutterfly was born.

Twelve years and thousands of decluttered homes later, Tracy knew it was time to take what she had learned working with her clients and write a book to help others dealing with clutter.  She is author of the newly published book Making Space, Clutter-Free: The Last Book on Decluttering You’ll Ever Need and is a regularly featured expert in the media, including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, goop, Home & Family, Real Simple, mindbodygreen,  KTLA Morning Show, KCAL9, and more.

In addition to her impressive organizing tool belt, Tracy grew up with family members who hoarded and knows firsthand that the effects of living amongst an accumulation of possessions goes far beyond the home’s walls. This personal experience gives her an advantage over most professional organizers as she has a unique understanding of the mindset of the organizationally and spatially-challenged.

When she is not dCluttering, Tracy is the proud Co-Executive Director of OneKid OneWorld, a non-profit building strong educational foundations for children in impoverished communities throughout Kenya and Central America. OKOW is providing kids with the basic (yet essential) fundamentals like desks and books, as well as paying teachers’ salaries, building classrooms and even installing solar power technology so students can study at night. OKOW’s most recent project #OneGirlOnePad will provide access to reusable feminine hygiene kits to over 4,000 girls in Kenya, allowing them to attend school all year round. OneKid OneWorld is Tracy’s “full time, non-paying passion.”

Got Paper? Let’s Plan!

Inside this latest episode of Tea with Kimberly (all episodes HERE), I share a peek inside my various paper planning systems—journal, ideas book, Daybook, mini art journal, large art journal.

When I feel overwhelmed (psst, it’s more often than I care to admit), my go-to is to process in a paper product. I usually finish feeling lighter and more on top of things.

Inside I’ll list my to-dos, ideas, frustrations, challenges, and opportunities. I take notes from therapy sessions (mine, not my clients), conferences, and online classes. Using images pulled from magazines and ephemera from travels, I’ll create collages and washi tape in memory bits (like the postcard from my Paris sketching class).

You definitely don’t need five notebooks to plan, however, if you’re a paper person, I think you’ll resonate with this latest episode. Accessorize with washi tape, colored markers, Sharpies, and your dreams. Please let me know what resonates or if you have any questions on the process. Thanks for watching! Bisous. x

Lessons on Loss

Greetings from Oklahoma. I’m here to spend time with family and commemorate my Gramma. It’s been eight years since we lost her at the age of 99.5, but it still felt much too soon. I shared this piece in Monday’s Love Note (you’re subscribed, right?!) and wanted to also post it on the blog as it’s stuck with me all week.

Loss has a way of making us reevaluate, doesn’t it? A few months after she was laid to rest, I made a big transition by stepping away from day-to-day business operations to finish my last year of graduate school and mourn. After two more losses over the next few years (beloved Bonnard and Louis), I have yet to fully recover.

But do we ever really recover from loss? Relationships, jobs, dreams, health, location, identity, time of life—they all leave a hole.

The pain is a reminder of how much we loved and there are lessons in loss. We may begin to question our own life journey. We may simplify our life. We may express love more often. We may work to maintain a strong continuing bond with the deceased. We may shift our priorities. We may hold those around us tighter. We may get stronger. We may pay more attention to the present moment.

I’m reading Mary Pipher’s Women Rowing North and came across this beautiful passage, “The more that is taken from us, the more capacity we have for compassion and appreciation. Growth requires healing from tragedies and integrating them into our wholeness.”

As you move through this week, I encourage you to wrap yourself in compassion. Reach out to loved ones. Acknowledge those who have touched you. Schedule a visit to a place that holds happy memories. Reconnect to those dreams that lie dormant, but are still relevant. It’s a loss because we loved and to love is a gift.

You are beautiful and you are loved. Bisous. x
