Halloween Costume Contest Open!
My lawn is yellow and orange, and the smell of wood smoke is in the air. But even more telling is the stash of ten candy bags stuffed in the back of a closet, treats hiding from me until the big day of ghosts, goblins, and witches. Halloween is fast approaching, and my annual costume contest is now officially open! The first new pictures will go up tomorrow, but please follow the link to the website for a list of the rules, how to enter, and a glimpse of last years winners. This year, every category winner will receive a signed Advanced Reader Copy of PALE DEMON. (Yay!) So gear up, take a picture, FOLLOW THE SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS, and have a great Halloween!

Free stuff
Free stuff is good, but this time it is not my books, but one of my favorite UF authors, Richard Kadrey. HarperVoyager is offering the first in his series of a gritty, detective/hit man who's been to hell (literally) and back again. If you have a sony device, the link to the free e-book is here. Sandman Slim sony. If you have a kindle device, the link to the free e-book is here: Sandman Slim Kindle. There is also one for apple devices at the i store, (because Guy downloaded it yesterday before I knew about it. The nerve . . .) and one for the Nook at Sandman Slim Nook.

Oh no. Rachel is in love
I shifted my radio over to the 80s yesterday, which is something I do about once a month or so, just to remember what it was like to feel the way the 80s feel, and much to my surprise and delight, I realized Rachel was in love.
This isn't a conscious decision made by the author to shift things around and tweak to start a new love interest, this is me listening to music for twelve hours and realizing that just about every song being played, (All the way from You Give Love a Bad Name, to Whip it Good, to I Love Rock and Roll, to One Night in Bangkok, to Breakfast Club, to Down Under) was swinging back to Rachel and the "New Guy."
All I can say it's freaking about time.
-grin-

Graphic Novel Cover!!
The first Hollows graphic novel is due out July 12, 2011, and I finally have a cover to show you! If you've not heard, this takes place in the golden year where Ivy and Rachel work together at the I.S. Rachel is the intern, but you can imagine she's not taking a back seat to her vampire partner. This was done from Ivy's point of view, and since Kisten was still alive during this time, we get to see him. In a tub, no less. -grin- On a more personal note, I want those boots.

Waxing Leaves
Apparently waxing leaves is a forgotten art, by the snarky comments yesterday. (Oh, you guys are bad! -grin-) No, it doesn't have anything to do with removing hair from "limbs," and unlike shaving, it is more fun in a group. I'm talking about dipping leaves in melted wax to help preserve them for a few weeks, and now that I know how from a professional, I think I'll be doing this every year. (Thanks Mom!)
We melted a box of paraffin (which you can find in the canning section of the grocery store) in a metal coffee can resting in a larger pot of steaming water, sort of like an informal double boiler. It took about fifteen minutes I'm guessing? Just long enough to find the leaves in a slow walk around the block. The fresher the better, especially in the heat we had this past weekend. Avoid wet or dry, curling leaves as they won't show as well.
And then you just dip them in the wax, letting the excess wax drip back into the can before you give it a couple of good shakes and set them on a sheet of wax paper to dry. Once dry, you can dip the stem, too, and they last a little longer. We did about three dozen each, I'm guessing? It took about an hour with reheating the wax a few times when it was starting to lay down a little thick on the leaves. The leftover wax my mom left in the can for the next time. QED! And it was a lot of fun. ;-)
