Six On Saturday – Just Like a Painting 23🌸9🌸23
This week the temperatures have gone up and the Rannunculus flowering has gone up a notch! I mowed my garden for the first time this year yesterday. Our 20 free-range bantams have kept the house garden grass, as flat as a pancake but the outer garden areas are too much for them, with more paddock style native grasses. So that is what I’m mowing at the moment. I am still lagging behind planting the last remaining bagged roses. I’m taking my time to make sure they are exactly where I want them. I bought a potted Paul’s Scarlet rose this week. This is the red rose I really wanted to emulate on my roses posts, and there it was in a pot and I bought it, even though it is only spring flowering.
I’m really enjoying my evening hand-watering now the weather is a little warmer, there is much progress in the garden each time I look at it. There are way less weeds in the garden, in this a drier year here, which are easier to keep under control.
All my lunch salad sandwiches now have home-grown cut-and-come-again lettuce in them. I am flavoring eating the lettuce from an organic Mesculum mix, because it has lettuces in there that aren’t bitter.
This week the Rannunculus Bulb Pot Flowering has really come into it’s own and is reaching a Rannunculus flowering crescendo! More of the Silene under-plants are flowering too.
Native emu bush Eremophila nivea, it flowering with its pretty lavender bell flowers. I can also see a pony in the background, they like to make themselves obvious so I might favour them with a juicy carrot or apple. I have put dozens of bucket-loads of their manure on my roses, fruit trees and other plants this winter. Or as my husband once called it, brown gold!
Pretty Butterfly Regal Pelargonium had just started. They look a little like azaleas, which we can’t grow, so they are an azalea we can grow!
The little violas I under-planted under the spring bulb pots are starting to come into their own. I also have Alyssum, Johnny jump ups and Silene, so hopefully these will flower after the bulbs have finished.
I forgot I had planted this little perennial Ageratum until it poked it’s like head out form the garden bed. The other’s succumbed to frost, but this bed near the house is more protected. Plus a pretty Dutch iris with a Mrs Wren Pelargonium below it.
The Rannunculas are starting to look like a painting!That’s all from me.

Six on Saturday – Musical Roses 16🌸9🌸23
Musical roses is similar to the children’s game instead of changing chairs, you change your mind and move a whole rose if it is in the wrong position! Usually I plant plants in the right position. However sometimes, I make an error of judgement, usually concerning the height of a plant or moving it to a better position where I can reach it with the hose in summer. This time it is roses, I bought one rose called Titian (it turned out to be more of a vigorous shrub climber to 3 metres rather than a floribunda) putting it in one position thinking I could just trim it to the right shape, if it was too vigorous, placing at at the front a a bed. But Instead I decided to move the whole plant to a more approriate position, at the back of a bed.
Then I had to find a replacement rose for the empty spot. Fortunately, I had planted a rose in a quite dry spot in my back garden, near the shade of a house, in not too fertile topsoil. So I decided to move this rose to better soil postion, in the empty spot left by Titian. In the backyard in the dicey spot, I planted a Pink Knockout roses that I bought on special. I have been impressed by the hardiness if this variety, and have one still growing and flowering in a spot with no water or tending, in an old abandoned garden area.
One of my favourite Salvias, the statuesque Salvia munzii native of Baja California, only flowers in spring. Way at the back of a bed and exists off rainwater alone, which is just as well, somewhat away from the hose’s reach.

The rannunculus are starting to come out in my bulb pots. 
Had to include this funny photo. A bird net that contains and protects the bird, rather than deter it! Walking past an old apple tree with no leaves I was able to spy a perfectly positioned bird’s nest using the bird net to it’s advantage! Plus it has a ready supply of food when the apples ripen, win-win! Mind you, the bird net has seen better days! The net still works in a fashion and the apple tree has now grown through it!
