Wildthings – Plants that plant themselves but you love them anyway!

Many people dislike plants that self-sow in their garden at random times in random places but I absolutely love them! Not only is their appearance a source of free plant material (invaluable for a large garden), but its is also a source of pleasure at their ingenuity and resourcefulness. Now the fairies in my garden (yes for the uninitiated I do believe and fairies and also converse with them!) would say that none of the planting is random and all is done with great care and significance. So they have been planted at deliberate times in deliberate places and all we really need to do is enjoy them. Right? However many people get their knickers in a twist about these little interlopers appearing in their otherwise carefully manicured gardens. I personally consider them ti be the blessing they were meant to be. Their random appearance and considerable brashness adding to the fabric of the garden rather than detracting from it.

For each person’s garden the list of self-sowers are slightly different. Here are some the favourites from my garden. Annual statice, Welsh Poppies, parsley, lavenders, a wild native purple daisy, ostespermums and even marguerite daisies to name a few.

This year the Annual Statice has gone beserk!

Other years I have had the statice cut down for the ease of the mowers on the rose garden paths. But this year I will ask them to go around the plants in favour of the flowers and not the mowing machines. The end result is a blissful chaos!

Instead of the borrowed landscape this is a case of the borrowed colour scheme, an accidental (or deliberate so the fairies tell me) colour scheme that seems to work anyway.[image error][image error][image error]

The bees and butterflys absolutely love statice flowers so my garden will be very popular with them.

Wonderful Bearded Irises

It’s the exciting time of year when all the bearded irises have started to bloom. All the more exciting as it has been 3 years or more since some of them have flowered. Mainly  due to I would say not enough water when they were forming their flower buds the previous year. This has all changed since I have introduced named bearded iris into the rose garden area that has been previously weed-matted.

So they are kept free of weeds for competition and they are more likely to get watered by me out of flowering season because they are with the roses that get a watering alongside them. Obviously in a hot dry climate extra water apart from the natural rainfall is needed to provide reliable iris blooms. This year has also been a slow season to warm up, this has kept the residual ground moisture intact and assisted in iris blooms stakes.

First to bloom is Iris germanica var florentina, the orris root iris. A hardy little almost wild iris that is often found along the roadsides in the country roads around here demarking where an early homestead once stood. It survives in my garden in the wilder areas with no water and little weeding providing a delicate show early in the season.

Then comes that array of delicious and delightful named bearded varieties, available in every could of the rainbow, although I mainly choose blues and pinks and purples, and pastel colours that compliment the early old roses to flower in my rose garden. These are photos of a small selection from my garden.
