Wonderful Bearded Irises

It’s the exciting time of year when all the bearded irises have started to bloom. All the more exciting as it has been 3 years or more since some of them have flowered. Mainly  due to I would say not enough water when they were forming their flower buds the previous year. This has all changed since I have introduced named bearded iris into the rose garden area that has been previously weed-matted.

So they are kept free of weeds for competition and they are more likely to get watered by me out of flowering season because they are with the roses that get a watering alongside them. Obviously in a hot dry climate extra water apart from the natural rainfall is needed to provide reliable iris blooms. This year has also been a slow season to warm up, this has kept the residual ground moisture intact and assisted in iris blooms stakes.

First to bloom is Iris germanica var florentina, the orris root iris. A hardy little almost wild iris that is often found along the roadsides in the country roads around here demarking where an early homestead once stood. It survives in my garden in the wilder areas with no water and little weeding providing a delicate show early in the season.

Then comes that array of delicious and delightful named bearded varieties, available in every could of the rainbow, although I mainly choose blues and pinks and purples, and pastel colours that compliment the early old roses to flower in my rose garden. These are photos of a small selection from my garden.

Blossomtime, is a time of joyful anticipation of what’s to come!

The original aboriginal inhabitants of South Australia used to maintain that our state had 13 different seasonal parts to the year. I would have to concur spring here doesn’t suddenly start is eases through, late winter, and early spring, each new flower blooms in part of the procession in exactly the right time, for the right reason. Our garden here had many distinct seasons as demarked by the different blooming plants and fruits and vegetables available and the types of weather patterns and wildlife which appears.

The time when the blossom trees start to bloom I would call in my garden pre-spring, its a sweet promise of things to come.  Still cold mainly cool days and cold nights, the weeds are still growing slowly. I do love blossom trees and have even planted an avenue of different flowering plum, almond and peach blooms to demark the occasion and to grace our driveway. I take photos of them every year to celebrate their blooming and to see how tall them and the surrounding native plants have grown.
