Six On Saturday – High Spring High 🌸 🌼 15-11-25

It has been quite a delicious floriferous spring this year. I do get a bit of a flower ‘high’ with my spring garden, I suspect it us all the flower fairies present! The plant varieties bar the irises have put on a superb show. A welcome relief after the record-breaking drought last year. The roses were the surprise survivors and look so lush and beautiful this year.

Not so good, surprisingly were my poor bearded irises. I only had 8 varieties flower, when I usually have over 30 to flower. Obviously they did not like the extended months of no rain last year, and weren’t able to bless me with blooms. They are all still there however, none have died. They obviously count on rain during the year to form their next year’s flowers.

Another accidental success were the snapdragons that I planted as summer potted colour but they outgrew the pots so I moved them to the garden. The very good rains this year helped them reach lovely heights in an assortment of lovely colours.

Another loss from the drought last year were my annual statice plants. I use these as garden bed flower fillers around the rose garden. Quite a few large plants died in the drought. So I hardly had any large ones to colour my spring garden and they were very much missed. I see lots of new ones have germinated over winter so I will have them back in colour next year for spring. Hopefully my irises will give me more flowers next year too.

My first potted Lily to flower is an Asiatic called ‘Lollipop’ that I bought on special from a mail order bulb company. I like to wait until they have their extreme specials and pounce!My favourite garden bed at the moment is only two years old. It has young roses and perennials I have grown by division such as Nepetas, Diascias, Lamb’s ear, Felicias, Calendulas and Snapdragons. It’s jolly colours make me happy!The star of the show was my vintage rose Madam Isaac Pereire who has grown so vigorously in this spot. I trained her on a climbing arch as she was so vigorous! The double graft standard roses of Iceberg and Bonica are looking lovely too. A pretty Senecio is in the foreground with mauve Scabiosas and Erigeron daisies.This bed has native hibiscus at the back Alyogyne huegelii. The big white perennial is called Bishop’s Lace and is covered in white daisy flowers in spring. Nepeta Walkers Blue at the front and Plum Verbenas amongst the roses.Charles de Gaulle rose looked lovely this year.Snapdragons were the real success story this spring after the roses. It was an accidental spring success, because I actually planted them for summer colour in pots last year. But they out-grew the pots so I decided to plant them on in the garden as advanced plants. They slowly grew over winter and reached impressive heights in spring in a lovely assortment of bright colours. I will have to repeat the exercise next year! Aquarius rose is in the background and a cute little Pelargonium I obtained from a market stall from a member of the Pelargonium society.

Do Fairies Have Fairy Wands? 🧚‍♂️🌟

In my book ‘Conversations With My Vegetable Garden’, I ask the locals fairy of the woods if fairies had fairy wands? This is her entertaining answer!

Do Fairies have fairy wands?

“No, not at all but we do perform what you humans would call ‘magic’ and it may involve some hand waving on our behalf! But in reality, you too (humans) can also perform such tasks but don’t even ask what it is that you can and can’t do, of your higher self. That is ask your higher-self inside your mind and imagination and listen to the answer you might get back (in your mind) you might be surprised as to just what a mere human can do! The fairies’ hands are their wands; their words and intention are their power. Do you understand?”
