Six on Saturday – Yukky Irises! 21🌸10🌸23

I have had a quite busy week this week and have been out for few days. Each morning there is a new rose or iris flowering, some for the first time so it is a very exciting time! I keep a record each year of when they flower and the roses are a good month earlier in blooming compared to last year which had wet and overcast weather. It is drier and warmer this year, which is a more normal weather pattern for us.

The irises over the last three year’s clumps have increased in size, which is great for the varieties I have chosen myself. Unfortunately there are a few clumps of irises that were given to me as freebies by the iris supplier and some of them have quite yukky blooms and those clumps are increasing in size too! One lot I keenly dug out of an old ladie’s abandoned garden that was about to be demolished, only to find they were a common no-name variety of browny purple iris, yuk. I will have to have a yukky iris sale or give them to unsuspecting friends! ….Who knows, they might like my yukky ones, and will become their new garden treasures!

Some of the yuk brigade! The dirty purple unnamed iris I rescued! New Day Dawning Iris has a way better name than her flowers! It has weird shaped yellow flowers with veined brown edges, I don’t like brown flowers! Ominous Stranger at the bottom does have a yukky name to go with the yukky yellow and brown blooms!The beautiful iris Admired, I tried to take a good photo of her last year, but the irises were damaged in the rain and storms. They were all blurry, marked (the iris flowers) and horrible. This year the spring had been gently warm, milder and dry and has the added benefit of making good looking iris flowers to photograph.The lovely simple blooms of Sparrieshoop rose. Last year I planted her in a bed where she was pulled out by her roots and lost them, by my German Spitz dog in her fur. So I plunged the rootless rose stem in a pot in the shade and kept watering her and behold, she grew roots again and survived to tell the tale! She is now transplanted into the rose garden proper this year!Bearded iris Who’s Your Daddy, has a fabulous name and oh boy love this purple and black combination.Lovely folds of Fire and Ice rose.The lovely David Austin Rose Olivia Rose and Bright As A Button, with its cute single flowers.A side view of my new rose garden, the garden beds are starting to fill out this year for the first time and there is less room for weeds in the rose beds. The deciduous trees here are a Golden Geditsia and a Golden Ash tree. I have a few chairs around the garden where I sit and hand-water the roses, irises and underplants in the evenings and pull out a few weeds and check on their progress.
