Time Line Therapy™ – A powerful tool to support healing of cancer and other ailments
Not only does the release of negative emotions clear up physical health, it also has the potential to improve the mental and emotional health of the person. This paradigm is no longer just a theory. What verified the basic theory of Time Line Therapy™ is a result of the research of a Medical Doctor named Hamer, who is currently practicing in Germany.
Several years ago while practicing in Rome, Italy, Dr. Hamer’s son, age 18 was shot and killed. Several years later, Dr. Hamer developed testicular cancer. He was operated on, and he survived. Then, having moved to Bavaria, he began to research whether or not a severe emotional trauma precedes all cancer. Since that time, Dr. Hamer has researched over 10,000 cases of cancer.
Dr. Hamer flatly states that all cancer starts with a severe psychological conflict that throws you into shock. He says, “You isolate yourself, and do not share your emotions with others. You are upset and do not share with others–you’re obsessed about the conflict. This conflict changes your life completely–you will never be the same.” (This is a description of a major Significant Emotional Experience, or SEE.) This type of SEE, according to Hamer, usually occurs on the average of one to three years prior to the onset of the first symptoms of cancer.
Trapped Emotions:
When the SEE occurs, the emotions associated with the SEE are trapped in a certain spot in the brain, and according to Hamer, a “short circuit” occurs. (He says that the physiological process is close to, or like a stroke.) In his work (originally available in German), Hamer has related the spot in the brain, with the tumor location in the body, with the type of trauma which caused it.
When a major SEE like this occurs, according to Hamer, there is a trapped emotion in the brain, the brain suffers something like a mild stroke and starts sending wrong information to a certain part of the body, and then a cancer growth starts in that area. The nature of the SEE determines the area of the brain, and the type of cancer. The rate of growth is also dependent on the SEE. As soon as the SEE is released, Hamer says, there is an immediate edema that occurs in the area where the trapped emotions were. This edema can be seen on a CT-Scan! Once the edema occurs, the cancer growth stops, and healing begins. A skilled MD can see the edema on the CT-Scan, and know about the area of the brain and, therefore, the type of cancer. Often, we forget about our conflicts and SEE’s, so we aren’t sure of the source. Areas where there were old, trapped emotions will often show up on the CT-Scan as “old stroke” areas.
This is important to understand in the treatment of cancer, because the fact is, Hamer says, that the immune system does not have to fight cancer cells. The immune system does not even have to recognize cancer cells, because the problem is in the brain–the answer is to heal the brain. This happens in the resolution of the initial conflict or SEE. Hamer feels that cutting, burning and/or poisoning the tumor is not the answer. If a tumor affects the proper functioning of an organ then the tumor will have to be cut off, but not the rest of the organ. This means that only a total of 2-3% of the cancer will have to be cut out.
From Recent Trauma:
Hamer says that it is not the childhood trauma that causes the cancer; it is a more recent trauma. It is also important to understand that it is the first event that allows the more recent SEE to create a lesion in the brain. Hamer’s procedure is to release the SEE using what seems to be pretty traditional psychological methods. It seems that Hamer does not have a way, or is not interested in the release of the original root cause or the first event. Hamer’s experience is, therefore, that a recurrence of an event similar to the SEE which caused the cancer brought a recurrence of the cancer. Hamer has observed in his research that even an imagined SEE is sufficient to bring back a relapse of the cancer symptoms. Our experience is that the recurrence of the cancer can be prevented if the first event is also released, and cleared.
It is important to note that, according to Hamer, even an imagined conflict/SEE can be enough to start or restart the cancer symptoms, even if it seems small or inconsequential to you. For example, Hamer notes a woman who had cervical cancer got it by re-reading her dead husband’s love letters, and feeling as though in his death he was refusing to have intercourse with her. The SEE can be as simple as the running away of a pet, the stock market going down, losing a job, or even listening to a neighbor gossip. Whether or not any of these actually make a difference in your physiology depends on your own personal history, and whether there is an emotional chain present for the SEE to connect to.
According to Hamer, carcinogens do not play a major role in the creation of cancer. This idea will, I’m certain, raise some eyebrows in certain committed health food types (of which I am one), but Hamer raises some disturbing questions. Why, for example, do women smokers have a significantly lower rate of bronchial and lung cancer than do men smokers? Hamer says that women smokers have fewer territorial conflicts (the type of SEE that causes bronchial cancer) than do men, and so the percentage of that type cancer in women is lower. Of course, as women proceed more and more into their rightful place of equality in the workplace, we can expect the statistics to move more into equality too. So there is a price for success!
Now what about situations where the cancer has been found to spread (metastasize) in the body to other areas of the body? The commonly accepted theory in medicine right now, is that a cancerous cell splits off from the main cancer and travels through the blood stream to other areas of the body, where new cancer growth then starts. Hamer flatly rejects this idea. First of all, he says it has not been possible for researchers to cause cancer cells to metastasize in any laboratory experiment. Rather, he says that what really happens is that the patient goes to see the medical doctor, and the doctor gets suspicious. So the doctor orders extensive testing. The report says, “Cancer.” And it sounds so final! The patient is terrified, knowing life will never be the same, creating a new SEE. In this case the fear causes lymph cancer, and the fear of death will start lung cancer (two of the major places to where cancer is “known” to metastasize). Now the well meaning medical doctor says, “It is all over the body.” And the body responds.
Another scenario, the patient undergoes surgery, and feels a lack of self worth. If the reproductive system is operated on, the patient will feel like less of a man or woman, and may say “I’ll never function the same way again,” or, “Now I’m worthless.” Another SEE, another cancer. The process is not the spreading of cancer, it is the spreading of SEE’s.
The Process of Cancer:
Now how do you use this information to assist the healing process using Time Line Therapy™ Techniques? It seems that there are two main stages in the process of cancer:
The Dis-ease Phase: SEE occurs, the client has no strategy for dealing with the trauma, the emotion is trapped in an area of the brain, the brain begins to send wrong signals to the area of the body, and a tumor growth occurs in a corresponding area of the body. During this phase, the patient feels uncomfortable, tense, sometimes sleepless, and has cold hands and feet. This indicates activity of the sympathetic nervous system. (The sympathetic nervous system is the system that we use in thinking, planning, action, etc.) A healthy person can switch from the sympathetic to the parasympathetic nervous system at will. During the Dis-ease Phase the client is in the sympathetic system only.
The Healing Phase: The SEE is released, conflict is resolved, the trapped emotion in the brain is released, an edema in the area of the brain occurs, and the tumor stops growing. In this phase the client immediately switches to the parasympathetic system. The client will feel relaxed, tired, will need more sleep and be more hungry.
My experience with clients leads me to say that you can tell which phase a client is in. “Marlene” had several bouts with cancer before she came to me. (In fact the Medical Doctor who referred her to me said that he had little hope for her.) The first session, Marlene could barely walk into the room. Marlene looked gray; she could not hold her head upright for more than a minute or two; and she spoke so softly that I had to strain to hear her.
The first assault of this dis-ease was in August 1984 with breast cancer. The first tip-off was a lump in the right breast in 1983. Between 1984 and 1990, she had cancer in the mid-back, hip, right shoulder, back, pelvic area, left shoulder, neck, and liver. She had surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy in the process of treating all these cancers. Of course, by the time I met her she was very weak, and as I mentioned, she looked gray.
In taking her history, I found that she was suffering or had suffered all her life from a number of negative emotions including depression, sadness, fear, guilt, anger, hate, anxiety, hurt feeling, pain, low self esteem, and jealousy. So I asked her what had happened one to three years prior to the lump in 1983. She gasped and said that in 1980, she and her husband had first met, and had gotten together. In 1981, in spite of a number of fears and misgivings, and even though he was extremely aggressive, she had married the man. He had then systematically cut her off from all her friends and family.
During the first intervention, we released all of her negative emotions including depression, sadness, fear, guilt, anger, hate, anxiety, hurt feeling, pain, low self-esteem, and jealousy. In addition, we cleared her decision to have the lump in the right breast, and any subsequent choices for less than perfect health.
During the intervention her hands became hot. She felt tired, sleepy, and extremely hungry. That night she had the best night’s sleep she had in five years. During the therapy, she shifted over from the Dis-ease Phase to the Healing Phase. The next day she came in alert, smiling, and all trace of the gray had disappeared.
Sometimes the Healing Phase can be uncomfortable. A client called me the day after a Time Line Therapy™ session, and said, “My whole body is uncomfortable, it aches–especially my head.” I told him to get a deep tissue massage, and enjoy a hot tub, and to be happy because the reaction of the body was telling him that we were releasing some major “stuff” (a technical term). According to Hamer, if the tumor has been growing for more than 9 months it is possible that the client will not be totally comfortable during the Healing Phase. In this case the resolution of the Dis-ease Phase may produce other dis-comfort which could include swelling of the brain, edema, heart arrhythmia or other temporary organ dysfunction, headache, migraine, or even mild epilepsy in some cases.
During the Healing Phase, the client needs to be comfortable. Schedule the Healing Phase to have a minimum of stress on the client. While healing, get away from it all, take a nap each time you yawn, exercise daily, and eat and drink moderately. Above all, no responsibilities except healing.
There is hope–we have had some excellent results in assisting clients to relieve their symptoms. Of course, anyone with a life threatening dis-ease should see a Medical Doctor first before seeking a non-traditional route like Time Line Therapy™ techniques. (Time Line Therapy™, NLP and Hypnosis are not a replacement for Medical treatment.) Even so, we have had results that now prove the theories we have been using in the processes of healing various symptoms that produce the illusion of dis-ease.
A client I saw in London had bladder cancer, and had been operated on twice with laser surgery. The second time the surgeon missed, and cut his backbone. With the third recurrence of the symptoms, he decided that he would like to seek a different route. (The M.D. referral said that the surgery had missed getting out all the cancer the last two times.) When I saw him in London, we cleared all his negative emotions, and limiting decisions, including the decision to have the symptom that looked like cancer. Six weeks later when he went to the doctor, all traces of the cancer had disappeared such that the doctors denied that he had ever had the cancer. He then asked them, “Well why did you operate on me?”
New Hope:
There is hope–the University of Calgary, Department of Medicine has investigated, and now uses Time Line Therapy and The Basis of Personalityas a text book in one of its oncology (cancer) treatment classes for training medical doctors.
There is hope–several psychology departments including St. Joseph’s College in Calumet, Michigan are teaching Time Line Therapy™ in the college to psychology students, and they are using The Secret of Creating Your Future™ (1989, James).
There is hope! Because there are some enlightened doctors in the world who are willing to stop doing what doesn’t work, and start looking for what does produce results. Then they use what they have learned to make changes that will affect the planet (and in case you hadn’t noticed that’s what my life is about). I think that attitude is wonderful wherever I find it, in our own community and especially in the medical and psychological communities, and I salute it.
Further, I am sincerely honored that some enlightened members of the medical and psychological community are willing to continue to learn and to look to Time Line Therapy™ techniques to provide other alternatives for healing.

The Mental Side of SPORT!
The mental side of sport is receiving more and more coverage and attention by the media, by players, managers and coaches. Sport Psychology has failed to have the impact that many believed it originally would as most of the current information is mainly in books which are often too theoretical and technical and thus not really appropriate.
Attitudes are changing with many top experts in sport agreeing that the mental side of competition is exceedingly important. Billy Jean King said “more matches are won internally than externally”. Many of the top athletes, go so far as to suggest that, on the day of competition, their “focused confidence”, “mental toughness” or just plain “belief in myself” is the deciding factor. Graeme Le Saux, the England football International says “So much of football is a mind game… so I go on to the field in a positive frame of mind”.
So what is the difference between the world beaters and the wannabeaters? Are these people just blessed with a better genetic makeup? Are they luckier? Or is there more to this than meets the eye?
In our work using NLP and modelling top athletes, we have seen some consistent patterns. It is not possible to cover all of these in this article. We will concentrate on what is arguably the most important element in the mental makeup of world champions.
In reality, at the highest levels of modern sport there is so little to separate performers in terms of technical competence or physical fitness. But when it comes down to the beliefs which athletes have in their ability to be better than the rest, to excel and be successful regardless of circumstance, there is a huge gap between top performers and the rest of the sporting pack.
Do you want to be a top performer and get your mental fitness up to par with your physical fitness? Then consider Hypnosis and NLP techniques to help you get there! Who uses these techniques? Famous Athletes Do!

How NLP & Time Line Therapy(R) Saved this Marriage
[image error]
What if you had tools that could allow you to have the relationship that you wanted? What if you could see eye to eye with your partner, mate or spouse? There’s so many cliché’s out there about what relationships are and what they are not. Many a romantic comedy has been made about the nuances of relationships and even books about men and women being from different planets. Sure they are entertaining and maybe even funny, but are these ‘stereo-types’ about relationships really true? Are men and women different… absolutely! Is there a way for two individuals who are significantly different to co-exist easily? Anything is possible.
Keys to a Successful Relationship Using NLP & Time Line Therapy®
As some of you may know, I work side-by-side with and teach NLP, Time Line Therapy® and Hypnotherapy trainings with my husband and co-trainer, Stephan Schafeitel. We work together, we live together, we train together, we work out together, we’re constantly together and we wouldn’t have it any other way. So many of our students after seeing us train together and work together for days on end during our trainings ask, “How do you do it?”
Using the tools we teach like NLP and Time Line Therapy® is how we do it.
Representational System Predicates: When I first learned of this information while listening to the NLP Practitioner audio by Dr. Tad James and reviewing it at my NLP Practitioner training years ago, a light bulb went off in my head instantly! I realized that I had been communicating to my mate in MY Primary Representational (Rep) System… not his. Learning this was like deciphering a code that I couldn’t crack for many years! This answered so many of my questions and gave me clarity to my own communication. I would ask him what I thought was a simple question like, “What do you feel like you want for dinner?” This produced no comment and no response from my mate. This is just one example of many times I would ask a question and get no response. I thought how bad our communication must be because I couldn’t even elicit a simple answer! Until I realized that one word, just one key word was the difference that made the difference in getting a response. After my NLP Practitioner I tested it out. I asked the simple question again and I changed just one word and I asked, “What do you think you want for dinner?” Instantly I received an answer.
The important thing I had learned was that I was speaking to my mate from my Primary Rep System of Kinesthetic by using words like feel, touch, handle, etc. Stephan’s Primary Rep System is Auditory Digital, which uses words like think, make sense and understand, just to name a few. By using the word ‘think’ instead of ‘feel’ it triggered his internal language and we were better able to communicate to each other. This was huge!
Meta Programs: The second key aspect to refining our communication was learning about our Meta Programs during our NLP Master Practitioner training. Meta Programs are our most unconscious filters and they determine how we think, and how we distort, delete and generalize the information that comes in through our five senses. They are one of the building blocks that make up our personality. There are many Meta Programs, all of which were beneficial in learning how to better communicate with the world around me, and especially my mate.
The main Meta Program I’ll discuss for now was the most impactful for us at the time: the Chunk Size Filter. Here’s an example of how a past conversation with Stephan and I would go. After he was away on a business trip for a week I would ask him, “How was your trip?” He would respond, “Great.” At that time hearing that response from him, I would think either he didn’t want to talk to me or there was something he was hiding, (both of which are silly to me now).
Then in return he would ask me how my week was and in very explicit detail I would describe every single aspect of every single day including how many drops of stevia I put in my coffee every day. Ok, so maybe that’s a slight exaggeration and you get the point. He would answer my question in a very big picture manner and by him answering, “Great,” that was saying a lot for him. For me at the time, I had this need to describe every single detail even if it wasn’t relevant to the conversation. Before I knew it his eyes would gloss over and I could tell I was losing him and then I would get upset that he didn’t want to listen to me. Does this sound familiar in your relationship? Undoubtedly there is one person in the relationship that is more of a global thinker and one that is more specific in a relationship (not always yet often). Make no correlation that men are global and big picture thinkers and women are specific and detailed. We’ve met just as many women that are big picture thinkers and just as many men that are detailed.
The most important thing I learned about the Chunk Size Filter is that if I needed more information from Stephan I would just ask more questions like, “How specifically,” or “What specifically” to get more details from him. When I would communicate to him I learned to give him the big picture first and then only give as many details as necessary. This one Meta Program helped our communication to become more efficient and productive. It saved us time and many arguments and allowed us to be on the same page when communicating. What a concept!
Practice makes the perfect practice in communication. It’s an ongoing feedback mechanism and constant feedback to yourself about yourself and how you’re getting through to the world around you (and how you’re not getting through).
Now, let’s look at some additional tools that you can use if you’re interested in strengthening your relationship.
Time Line Therapy®: What can I say about Time Line Therapy® other than it’s simply amazing! When I first learned TLT® at my NLP Practitioner Training with Drs. Tad & Adriana James, I immediately realized the benefits of using the techniques whenever necessary. Clearing out your negative emotions such as: Anger, Sadness, Fear, Hurt and Guilt (just to name a few) is a must! To be free from these limiting negative emotions in my life and my relationship improved my health and well being instantly. The fact that I could communicate with my mate clearly, easily and openly without the presence of anger, fear, hurt, guilt, jealousy, etc. was life changing. Knowing that both of us are free from negative emotions means that we are always looking to communicate with pure intentions and always looking for a win-win, whatever the situation may be.
Using TLT® to let go of Limiting Decisions from my past was also a key factor in creating my ideal relationship. As we teach in the NLP Practitioner TLT® section, any belief or decision that limits you from your past is a Limiting Decision and can easily be let go with TLT® and allow you to create a new decision of what you want instead. Some common limiting decisions that most people can benefit from letting go of are; “not being good enough,” “I can’t have my ideal relationship,” “I can’t communicate,” “I don’t deserve what I want,” “relationships aren’t worth working for,” or “I can’t have my ideal relationship and be successful in my career,” and so on… you get the point.
The important thing I had realized was that I could create what I wanted in my relationship by letting go of all my negative emotions and Limiting Decisions. By doing this work (and continually doing it when need be) I know that I am always being the best version of me that I can be, which then allows me to always view my other half as the best that he can be.
Values Alignment: Have you ever experienced an organization, business or retail store where it seemed like all the employees were on the same page; aligned and working toward the same goal? They were interested in what you wanted; they were friendly and truly seemed to enjoy what they were doing. Sure, many people have. Question is… should your relationship be any different than a successful and smoothly operating business? Most major successful corporations and businesses have done some sort of values alignment, as I’m about to discuss here.
During the NLP Master Practitioner we learn high-level communication tools such as Values Elicitation and Values Alignment. Values are what’s important to you. Values are what motivates you in advance and they determine how you feel about something after you do it. Knowing your values is like having a road map or a blue print to your life. In a relationship (or a business organization) this is key to know each person’s values. Once you know your values and your partner’s values, you then know what is important to each other. To take it a step further, you can align your values so that you have a shared list of values. This is what takes a relationship from so-so to really performing! This was a major factor for Stephan and I in taking our relationship from good to performing and creating results.
You can see now how it’s possible to use just a few key concepts from the NLP Practitioner Training and NLP Master Practitioner Training to build and strengthen your relationship can’t you. You too can have the relationship you’ve always wanted. If you’re a graduate of ours, then I encourage you to go out there and put these tools into action. If you have yet to take a training with the Tad James Company, join us and discover what is truly possible!
Enjoy your results and let me know how it goes. I look forward to hearing about your success!

Anxiety? Here are the Foods that Help!
#Anxiety? Is a signal from your unconscious mind that your focusing on what you Don’t Want – And i teach a Time Line Therapy technique that anyone can easily learn to help them get rid of anxiety… Along with this technique, being mindful of incorporating foods that fight stress can help!
Time to Rethink your comfort foods
What makes a food calming? some clients tell me, Whenever I’m eating, I feel better.” But what if you started tapping into a food’s inherently calming properties…
The daily hassles of life & stressful events—cause our cortisol levels to rise. Cortisol causes food cravings, and in women those cravings tend to be strongest for carbs, especially sweet foods, according to researchers at the University of California at San Francisco Medical Center. The more of them we eat, the worse our mood gets. As if that weren’t bad enough, the cortisol then makes more trouble for us, triggering an enzyme in our fat cells (it converts cortisone to more cortisol). Since our visceral fat cells (the ones in our abdomen, packed around our vital organs) have more of these enzymes than the subcutaneous fat cells (the fat on our thighs and butts, for example), stress causes many women to accumulate more belly fat.
what if you could eat foods that will truly soothe and calm you. Whether it’s because of the specific nutrients they provide or the steady, reliable source of energy they give you, they’ll get you through the day feeling focused, and balanced—so you’ll have the ability to conquer anything.
Asparagus
Is high in folate, which is essential for keeping your cool. You can have them steamed, then added to salads or broiled until crisp. Go ahead and eat as many as you’d like. (Enjoy them in new ways with these delicious asparagus recipes.)
Avocados
These creamy fruits stress-proof your body. Rich in glutathione, a substance that specifically blocks intestinal absorption of certain fats that cause oxidative damage, avocados also contain lutein, beta-carotene, vitamin E, and more folate than any other fruit. A single serving (about one-quarter of an avocado) has plenty of B vitamins, too. Remember, I count it as a fat, so use portion control.
Cashews
I love all nuts. They’re great snacks, and they can cure many cravings. For those trying to lose weight, they’re such a potently satisfying combo of protein and fat. (You do have to watch portion size though, since they are high in calories.) Cashews are an especially good source of zinc—a 1-ounce serving has 11 percent of your RDA. Low levels of zinc have been linked to both anxiety and depression. Since our bodies have no way of storing zinc, it’s important to get some every day. Trade cashews for other nuts on the plan when you’re in the mood.
Chamomile tea
This is probably one of the most recommended bedtime soothers around. A study from the University of Pennsylvania tested chamomile supplements on 57 participants with generalized anxiety disorder for 8 weeks, and found it led to a significant drop in anxiety symptoms. Of course, I’d much prefer you drink it in tea form—that way, you’ll get the warm, wonderfully calming feeling of holding a mug of tea as you sit in a quiet spot before bed. And yes, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, there is some evidence that, in addition to calming nerves, chamomile promotes sleep. Do have a cup every night: Turn off the TV, the computer, and your phone, and settle down for a peaceful end to the day. It’s nice iced, too.
Chocolate
Besides the healthy antioxidants in this treat, which push chocolate to the top of most heart-healthy food lists, it has an undeniable link to mood. A recent study from the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine reports that both women and men eat more chocolate as depressive symptoms increase. Of course, we’ve all been there, polishing off an entire package of chocolate after a bad day. But there’s evidence that, in moderation, chocolate does actually make you feel better.
Dark chocolate, is known to lower blood pressure, adding to a feeling of calm. It contains more polyphenols and flavonols—two important types of antioxidants. You can safely allow yourself dark chocolate as a snack once a week, or as a conscious indulgence, and still stay on track with your nutrition plan. I always keep a few squares in my bag.
Garlic
Like many plants, garlic is jam-packed with powerful antioxidants. These chemicals neutralize free radicals (particles that damage our cells, cause diseases, and encourage aging) Among the compounds in garlic is allicin, which has been linked to fending off heart disease, cancer, and even the common cold. Because stress weakens our immune system, we need garlic! As long as you saute it in broth, not oil, you can add it liberally to all the meals.
Grass-fed beef
Grass-fed beef is not only better for the planet, it’s also better for people. It has more antioxidants—including vitamins C and E and beta-carotene—than grain-fed beef, and doesn’t have added hormones, antibiotics, or other drugs. And while it’s lower in fat overall, it’s about two to four times higher in omega-3s.
Green Tea
While it does contain caffeine, green tea also has an amino acid called theanine. Researchers at the University of Illinois say that in addition to protecting against some types of cancer, this slimming food is a brain booster as well, enhancing mental performance. Drink two cups each day.
Oatmeal
Talk about comfort food! A complex carbohydrate, oatmeal causes your brain to produce serotonin, a feel-good chemical. Not only does serotonin have antioxidant properties, it also creates a soothing feeling that helps overcome stress & depression. Studies have shown that kids who eat oatmeal for breakfast stay sharper throughout the morning. And beta-glucan, the type of soluble fiber found in oatmeal, has been shown to promote greater satiety scores than other whole grains. Make a batch of the steel-cut variety on the weekend, store it in the fridge, and microwave it on busy mornings. It keeps beautifully, and in fact, that’s how restaurants often prepare it.
Oranges
Another vitamin C powerhouse, oranges have the added benefit of being totally portable. That tough skin keeps them protected while they’re bouncing around in your purse or backpack, meaning you can tote them anywhere.
Walnuts
Walnuts have been proven to provide a bit of a cognitive edge. They contain alpha-linolenic acid, an essential omega-3 fatty acid, and other polyphenols that have been shown to help prevent memory loss. Researchers at Tufts University found that animals that ingested walnuts even reversed some signs of brain aging. To bring out their flavor, you can toast them for 10 minutes, then chop them and add them to salads.

What are the Statistics on the Effectiveness of Hypnosis?
Here is a brief review of some of the research evidence on the effectiveness of hypnosis: For Quit Smoking, Weight Loss, Pain, Migraines, Headaches, Anxiety, Addiction, Surgeries & Fractures
90.6% Success Rate for Smoking Cessation Using Hypnosis
Of 43 consecutive patients undergoing this treatment protocol, 39 reported remaining abstinent from tobacco use at follow-up (6 months to 3 years post-treatment). This represents a 90.6% success rate using hypnosis.
University of Washington School of Medicine, Depts. of Anesthesiology and Rehabilitation Medicine,
Int J Clin Exp Hypn. 2001 Jul;49(3):257-66. Barber J.
87% Reported Abstinence From Tobacco Use With Hypnosis
A field study of 93 male and 93 female CMHC outpatients examined the facilitation of smoking cessation by using hypnosis. At 3-month follow-up, 86% of the men and 87% of the women reported continued abstinence from the use of tobacco using hypnosis.

PMID: 7862796 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]
81% Reported They Had Stopped Smoking After Hypnosis
Thirty smokers enrolled in an HMO were referred by their primary physician for treatment. Twenty-one patients returned after an initial consultation and received hypnosis for smoking cessation. At the end of treatment, 81% of those patients reported that they had stopped smoking, and 48% reported abstinence at 12 months post-treatment.

Hypnosis More Effective Than Drug Interventions For Smoking Cessation
Group hypnosis sessions, evaluated at a less effective success rate (22% success) than individualized hypnosis sessions. However, group hypnosis sessions were still demonstrated here as being more effective than drug interventions.
Ohio State University, College of Nursing, Columbus, OH 43210, USA Descriptive outcomes of the American Lung Association of Ohio hypnotherapy smoking cessation program. Ahijevych K, Yerardi R, Nedilsky N.
Hypnosis Most Effective Says Largest Study Ever: 3 Times as Effective as Patch and 15 Times as Effective as Willpower.
Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. A meta-analysis, statistically combining results of more than 600 studies of 72,000 people from America and Europe to compare various methods of quitting. On average, hypnosis was over three times as effective as nicotine replacement methods and 15 times as effective as trying to quit alone.
University of Iowa, Journal of Applied Psychology, How One in Five Give Up Smoking.
October 1992. (Also New Scientist, October 10, 1992.)
Hypnosis Over 30 Times as Effective for Weight Loss
Investigated the effects of hypnosis in weight loss for 60 females, at least 20% overweight. Treatment included group hypnosis with metaphors for ego-strengthening, decision making and motivation, ideomotor exploration in individual hypnosis, and group hypnosis with maintenance suggestions. Hypnosis was more effective than a control group: an average of 17 lbs lost by the hypnosis group vs. an average of 0.5 lbs lost by the control group, on follow-up.

Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 54, 489-492.
Two Years Later: Hypnosis Subjects Continued To Lose Significant Weight
109 people completed a behavioral treatment for weight management either with or without the addition of hypnosis. At the end of the 9-week program, both interventions resulted in significant weight reduction. At 8-month and 2-year follow-ups, the hypnosis subjects were found to have continued to lose significant weight, while those in the behavioral-treatment-only group showed little further change.

Hypnosis Subjects Lost More Weight Than 90% of Others and Kept it Off
Researchers analyzed 18 studies comparing a cognitive behavioral therapy such as relaxation training, guided imagery, self monitoring, or goal setting with the same therapy supplemented by hypnosis.
Those who received the hypnosis lost more weight than 90 percent of those not receiving hypnosis and maintained the weight loss two years after treatment ended.

Hypnosis Showed Significantly Lower Post-Treatment Weights
Two studies compared overweight smoking and non-smoking adult women in an hypnosis-based, weight-loss program. Both achieved significant weight losses and decreases in Body Mass Index. Follow-up study replicated significant weight losses and declines in Body Mass Index. The overt aversion and hypnosis program yielded significantly lower post-treatment weights and a greater average number of pounds lost.

Hypnosis can more than double the effects of traditional weight loss approaches
An analysis of five weight loss studies reported in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology in 1996 showed that the “… weight loss reported in the five studies indicates that hypnosis can more than double the effects” of traditional weight loss approaches.
University of Connecticut, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology in 1996 (Vol. 64, No. 3, pgs 517-519).
Weight loss is greater where hypnosis is utilized
Research into cognitive-behavioral weight loss treatments established that weight loss is greater where hypnosis is utilized. It was also established that the benefits of hypnosis increase over time.
Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology (1996)
Showed Hypnosis As “An Effective Way To Lose Weight”
A study of 60 females who were at least 20% overweight and not involved in other treatment showed hypnosis is an effective way to lose weight.
Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology (1986)
Hypnosis Reduces Frequency and Intensity of Migraines
Compared the treatment of migraine by hypnosis and autohypnosis with the treatment of migraine by the drug prochlorperazine (Stemetil). Results show that the number of attacks and the number of people who suffered blinding attacks were significantly lower for the group receiving hypnotherapy than for the group receiving prochlorperazine. For the group on hypnotherapy, these two measures were significantly lower when on hypnotherapy than when on the previous treatment. It is concluded that further trials of hypnotherapy are justified against some other treatment not solely associated with the ingestion of tablets.

& Experimental Hypnosis 1975; 23(1): 48-58.
Hypnosis Reduces Pain and Speeds up Recovery from Surgery
Since 1992, we have used hypnosis routinely in more than 1400 patients undergoing surgery. We found that hypnosis used with patients as an adjunct to conscious sedation and local anesthesia was associated with improved intraoperative patient comfort, and with reduced anxiety, pain, intraoperative requirements for anxiolytic and analgesic drugs, optimal surgical conditions and a faster recovery of the patient. We reported our clinical experience and our fundamental research.

Hypnosis Reduces Pain Intensity
Analysis of the simple-simple main effects, holding both group and condition constant, revealed that application of hypnotic analgesia reduced report of pain intensity significantly more than report of pain unpleasantness.
Dahlgren LA, Kurtz RM, Strube MJ, Malone MD, Differential effects of hypnotic suggestion on
multiple dimensions of pain. Journal of Pain & Symptom Management. 1995; 10(6): 464-70.

with hypnotherapy: a single-blind time controlled study. Headache 1991; 31(10): 686-9.
Hypnosis Lowered Post-treatment Pain in Burn Injuries
Patients in the hypnosis group reported less post treatment pain than did patients in the control group. The findings are used to replicate earlier studies of burn pain hypnoanalgesia, explain discrepancies in the literature, and highlight the potential importance of motivation with this population.
Patterson DR, Ptacek JT, Baseline pain as a moderator of hypnotic analgesia for
burn injury treatment. Journal of Consulting & Clinical Psychology 1997; 65(1): 60-7.
Hypnosis Lowered Phantom Limb Pain
Hypnotic procedures appear to be a useful adjunct to established strategies for the treatment of phantom limb pain and would repay further, more systematic, investigation. Suggestions are provided as to the factors which should be considered for a more systematic research program.

Hypnosis Has a Reliable and Significant Impact on Acute and Chronic Pain
Hypnosis has been demonstrated to reduce analogue pain, and studies on the mechanisms of laboratory pain reduction have provided useful applications to clinical populations. Studies showing central nervous system activity during hypnotic procedures offer preliminary information concerning possible physiological mechanisms of hypnotic analgesia. Randomized controlled studies with clinical populations indicate that hypnosis has a reliable and significant impact on acute procedural pain and chronic pain conditions. Methodological issues of this body of research are discussed, as are methods to better integrate hypnosis into comprehensive pain treatment.

Hypnosis is a Powerful Tool in Pain Therapy and is Biological in Addiction to Psychological
Attempting to elucidate cerebral mechanisms behind hypnotic analgesia, we measured regional cerebral blood flow with positron emission tomography in patients with fibromyalgia, during hypnotically-induced analgesia and resting wakefulness. The patients experienced less pain during hypnosis than at rest. The cerebral blood-flow was bilaterally increased in the orbitofrontal and subcallosial cingulate cortices, the right thalamus, and the left inferior parietal cortex, and was decreased bilaterally in the cingulate cortex. The observed blood-flow pattern supports notions of a multifactorial nature of hypnotic analgesia, with an interplay between cortical and subcortical brain dynamics. Hypnosis Useful in Hospital Emergency Rooms
Hypnosis can be a useful adjunct in the emergency department setting. Its efficacy in various clinical applications has been replicated in controlled studies. Application to burns, pain, pediatric procedures, surgery, psychiatric presentations (e.g., coma, somatoform disorder, anxiety, and post traumatic stress), and obstetric situations (e.g., hyperemesis, labor, and delivery) are described.

Hypnosis For Cocaine Addiction Documented Case Study
Hypnosis was successfully used to overcome a $500 (five grams) per day cocaine addiction. The subject was a female in her twenties. After approximately 8 months of addiction, she decided to use hypnosis in an attempt to overcome the addiction itself. Over the next 4 months, she used hypnosis three times a day and at the end of this period, her addiction was broken, and she has been drug free for the past 9 years. Hypnosis was the only intervention, and no support network of any kind was available.

Study One: Six weeks after an ankle fracture, those in the hypnosis group showed the equivalent of eight and a half weeks of healing.
Study Two: Three groups of people studied after breast reduction surgery. Hypnosis group healed “significantly faster” than supportive attention group and control group.
