Not Losing Weight? Do This…

Iodine is a trace element that is naturally present in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement. Iodine is an essential component of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Thyroid hormones regulate many important biochemical reactions, including protein synthesis and enzymatic activity, and are critical determinants of metabolic activity. They are also required for proper skeletal and central nervous system development in fetuses and infants.

The following are symptoms of hypothyroidism, as detailed by the Merck Manual, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and the Thyroid Foundation of America:

gaining weight inappropriately

unable to lose weight with diet/exercise

constipated, sometimes severely

low body temperature (feel cold when others feel hot/need extra sweaters, etc.)

fatigued, exhausted

run down, sluggish, lethargic

hair is coarse and dry, breaking, brittle, falling out

skin is coarse, dry, scaly, and thick

hoarse or gravely voice

puffiness and swelling around the eyes and face

pains, aches in joints, hands and feet

carpal-tunnel syndrome, or it’s getting worse

irregular menstrual cycles (longer, or heavier, or more frequent)

trouble conceiving a baby

depressed

restless

moods change easily feelings of worthlessness difficulty concentrating feelings of sadness losing interest in normal daily activities more forgetful lately

The following are additional symptoms, which have been reported more frequently in people with hypothyroidism:

hair is falling out

can’t seem to remember things

no sex drive

more frequent infections, that last longer

snoring more lately

have/may have sleep apnea

shortness of breath and tightness in the chest

feel the need to yawn to get oxygen

eyes feel gritty and dry and/or sensitive to light

eyes get jumpy/tics in eyes, which makes me dizzy/vertigo and have headaches

strange feelings in neck or throat

tinnitus (ringing in ears

recurrent sinus infections

vertigo and/or light-headedness

severe menstrual cramps

The Thyroid Gland: Understanding How It Works

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland found inside your neck, right under your larynx or voice box. A two-inch long, brownish red, highly vascular gland, it has two lobes located on each side of the windpipe that are both connected by a tissue called the isthmus. A normal thyroid gland weighs somewhere between 20 and 60 grams.

Your thyroid is responsible for producing the master metabolism hormones that control every function in your body. It produces three types of hormones:

Triiodothyronine (T3)
Thyroxine (T4)
Diiodothyronine (T2)

Hormones secreted by your thyroid interact with all your other hormones, including insulin, cortisol, and sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. The fact that these hormones are all tied together and are in constant communication explains why a less-than-optimal thyroid status is associated with so many widespread symptoms and diseases.

Almost 90 percent of the hormone produced by your thyroid is in the form of T4, the inactive form. Your liver then converts the T4 into T3, the active form, with the help of an enzyme. T2, however, is currently the least-understood component of thyroid function and the subject of a number of ongoing studies.

If everything is working properly, you will make what you need and have the correct amounts of T3 and T4, which control the metabolism of every cell in your body. If your T3 is inadequate, either by scarce production or not converting properly from T4, your whole system suffers. T3 is critically important because it tells the nucleus of your cells to send messages to your DNA to rev up your metabolism by burning fat. This is how T3 lowers cholesterol levels, regrows hair, and helps keep you lean.

Your T3 levels can be disrupted by nutritional imbalances, toxins, allergens, infections, and stress, and this leads to a series of complications, including thyroid cancer, hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism, which today are three of the most prevalent thyroid-related diseases.

Blood tests do not always measure accurate tissue levels of T3 and T4 (thyroid hormones). The body strives to keep T3 and T4 levels ‘normal’.  A serum Thyroid Anti-body test and a TSH test should be done. However, at home, a ‘basil temperature test’ is often a good way to check your thyroid. If you find your have many of the symptoms on this page and suspect not only an imbalance but perhaps ‘hypothyroidism’ then you must see your doctor as soon as possible. Thyroid imbalances can be successfully addressed with supplements and diet, but a true case of ‘hypothyroidism’ needs medical attention and medication. Nutritional consultants may not diagnose disease.  A thyroid that is in the process of autoimmune failure (a serum Thyroid Anti-body test will show this) can cause hypothyroid symptoms BEFORE the hypothyroidism shows up as TSH outside the normal range.

Not Losing Weight?  Do this test!  The Basil Thyroid Temperature Test

Taking your temperature at home is a reliable way to determine if your thyroid gland is unbalanced and either working overtime (hyperactive) or working below normal (hypoactive). Thyroid blood tests measure the thyroid hormone T-4 in the blood but don’t reveal if the thyroid hormone T-3 is getting to the tissues that need it. A person may have a chronically under active thyroid and the symptoms that go along with it but have normal thyroid results from a blood test.

Immediately upon waking in the morning, before getting up, place a thermometer (mercury kinds work best) under the armpit for 10 minutes. Lie quietly during this time. Do this for 3 consecutive mornings to get an average temperature. Add all 3 numbers together and then divide by 3. The resulting temperature should be between 36.5 °C and 36.8°C (97.8°F – 98.20°F). If your average for the three mornings is below 36.5°C (97.8°F) then you may well have an under active thyroid gland. If your results are above 36.8°C (98.2°F) then your thyroid may be overactive. Menstruating women need to take their temperature on day 2, 3, and 4 of their cycle.

“Body temperature readings can be compared with your thyroid tests, which usually measure T4 hormone levels in the blood. If both temperature and blood levels are low, then the thyroid is not producing enough T4. If temperature is low but blood levels are normal, then the thyroid is producing enough T4 but the body is not converting enough of it into T3. (T3 is the form needed to activate cells fully, but the thyroid does not produce it. It must instead be converted in the various tissues of the body from the T4 that the thyroid makes.)”

The thyroid gland may be working below average for many reasons. It may be worn out from compensating for other endocrine glands that are working below average (adrenals, ovaries, pancreas) or it may not be getting the right signals from the pituitary gland. There are many foods and supplements you can take (and avoid) to support the thyroid in recovering.

Do you suffer with Back Pain or Chronic Pain? How to Treat without Drugs!

The Price you Pay for Poor Emotional Health

There’s increasing evidence that back pain and other types of pain may be exacerbated by psychological and emotional issues. It is my experience that emotional health and your ability to effectively address your stress is an essential component for optimal health, and can have a major influence on whether or not you’re effectively eliminating your pain.

If you have any underlying emotional issues and unresolved trauma, it can profoundly influence your overall health, particularly in terms of physical pain. A 2004 study on back pain supports this theory. Its researchers followed 100 patients over the course of four years. All of the patients, who were back pain-free at the start of the study, underwent psychological tests. Afterwards, the researchers compared which of the participants remained pain-free and which ones developed back pain.

According to the results, the people who scored poorly on the psychological tests were three times more likely to report having experienced back pain by the end of the study.

Many health experts from various fields of medicine agree that emotional and psychological trauma has severe effects on a person’s risk of acquiring chronic pain. One example is Dr. John Sarno, a psychiatrist who uses mind-body techniques to treat patients with severe low back pain. He specializes in helping individuals who already had surgery for low back pain but did not get any relief.

This is one tough group of patients – yet Dr. Sarno has a greater than 80 percent success rate! He uses techniques like the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), an acupuncture-like technique that stimulates meridian points throughout your body. . Sadly, many people dismiss these types of treatment strategies simply because they seem “too simple to be effective.” Unfortunately, they believe that in order to get back pain relief, they need to undergo radical treatment or take medications.

Time Line Therapy(R) techniques have been proven to work by releasing negative emotions at root cause (Anger, Sadness, Fear, Hurt Guilt and more…)  We can also release limiting beliefs (i’m not good enough, i can’t achieve ____)  Many suppress what they are feeling in the now.  The Pain Paradigm is also another technique to use that we teach in our NLP Master Training’s, which is bringing to conscious awareness of what you are feeling now  – this can release the physical pain in the body.  Such a simple exercise but many are not aware of this or won’t do it because they have the belief that its too easy, they think they need medications instead.

What other factors can lead to Back Pain?

Accidents and sports injuries are the most common causes of chronic back pain. But sometimes, even simple activities or movements – like bending over to pick up an object from the floor – can trigger pain.

There are also a number of other factors that can increase your risk of back pain, such as: Prolonged sitting and having a sedentary lifestyle, poor posture, and Obesity – According to a study posted in the Journal of American Epidemiology, overweight and obese people had a higher prevalence of low back pain than non-overweight individuals.

How to Relieve Back Pain Naturally

If you are already suffering from chronic back pain or pain of any kind, you should understand that there are many safe and effective alternatives to prescription and over-the-counter painkillers… Here are some strategies I highly recommend:

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic Care for Back PainOne of the best tactics to help treat back pain is to see a qualified chiropractor.

The problem is that a lot of people ignore chiropractic care, thinking that it’s just “pushing bones into place.” However, there’s a whole lot more to chiropractic care. In fact, one of the basic foundations of this health system is “vitalism” – recognizing that the human body has innate healing intelligence or ‘life force’ that guides and directs your body’s healing process.

Qualified chiropractic, osteopathic, and naturopathic physicians are reliable, as they have received extensive training in the management of musculoskeletal disorders during their course of graduate healthcare training, These health experts have comprehensive training in musculoskeletal management.

Many studies have confirmed that chiropractic management is much safer and less expensive than allopathic medical treatments, especially when used for low-back pain treatment.

What’s more, researchers have also found that chiropractic adjustments may affect the chemistry of biological processes on a cellular level. Chiropractic care can affect the basic physiological processes that profoundly influence oxidative stress, immune function and DNA repair. This means that aside from addressing any immediate spinal misalignment that might cause back pain, chiropractic care can also help address, prevent and treat deeper dysfunctions in your body.

As previously stated, Time Line Therapy techniques, the Pain Paradigm is something i would recommend as well as Hypnosis for pain management.

Hypnosis is a safe approach to pain relief.

In a hypnotic state you are keenly aware of what you are hearing even though you are relaxed and your brainwaves have slowed to alpha state. Hypnosis for back pain is able to address both physical and mental causes of pain and train the mind and body to appropriately respond to the pain messages.

Whereas medication blocks the ability of the body to feel pain for a brief period, hypnosis can actually lower the intensity of the pain as well as the number of pain events.

Under hypnosis you can program your brain to release endorphins when needed to alleviate pain in any part of the body. Endorphins are like opiates (painkillers) and are naturally produced in the brain. Athletes produce these brain chemicals during intense workouts and experience feelings of euphoria.

These endorphins can produce a mild anesthesia or a full anesthesia. In fact, throughout history (and even in modern times) surgery has been done on people using hypnosis instead of chemical anesthesia.

There are three basic ways that hypnosis can help with back pain.

Firstly, hypnotherapy for back pain can give suggestions directly to the unconscious mind to influence perception of pain. This means that even though the pain is still there you do not experience it.
Secondly, it can produce endorphins to anesthetize the area of pain so that you don’t feel it.
Finally, hypnosis can uncover emotional causes of pain and provide a way to heal them which can lead to permanent healing.

Massage Therapy releases endorphins that help induce relaxation, relieve pain, and reduce levels of stress chemicals, such as cortisol and noradrenaline. It also reverses the damaging effects of stress by slowing your heart rate, respiration, and metabolism and lowering raised blood pressure.

Yoga Exercise – Yoga may be an effective strategy for alleviating back pain by making people more aware of how they move their bodies. The benefits of yoga were proven in a study of more than 100 adults with lower back pain. After taking weekly yoga classes for 12 weeks, the participants, who were between ages 20 to 64, experienced improvement in their body function and a reduced need for pain medication. I’m teaching yoga and Pilates at the New Yoga Studio in New Maryland called Become Yoga.  Check out their schedule and website HERE

How to use Intermittent Fasting to Lose Weight!

When using fasting to lose weight, you will eat all of your meals in a 6-8 hour eating window. Fasting for 15 to 18 hours and Feasting for 6 to 8 hours.  This is best accomplished by going 5-6 hours upon waking before having your first meal. Your last meal should be around 2 hours before going to sleep.  If you are new and find going without food for 16 hours is too much, then start with a 12 hour fast which is easier and much gentler.  You can even work your way up slowly by doing a 14 hour fast and then a 16 hour fast.

Example:  Wake up at 6 or 7am.

Meal 1 at 12 Noon or 1pm.

Meal 2 at  4 or 5pm.

Meal 3 at 8 or 9pm, depending on what time you go to bed.

By skipping breakfast you force your body to break into it’s fat stores to fuel itself instead of burning food (glucose/sugar) for  energy. This is also why my WHERE SLIM BEGINS program for men and women works so well, we also include mindset, hypnosis, nutrition and exercise in this 8 week program!  In addition, by pushing your first meal later into the day you can enjoy big, satisfying healthy meals while losing the weight you want.  You’ll feel more energized, have more focus, balance blood sugars and get healthier!

If you haven’t skipped breakfast before it may take some getting used to. This is probably the hardest part about transitioning into using intermittent fasting for fat loss.  You could begin fasting for 12 hours for a week and then transition to 15 to 16 hours of fasting, listen to your body and do what’s right for you.  After a few days intermittent fasting, your body will learn to thrive in the fasted state.

SHOULD YOU DRINK COFFEE IN THE FASTED STATE?

Consuming 1 to 2 cups of coffee while fasting will accelerate your metabolism, reduce your appetite and make you feel good. If you are going to be working out then the coffee will have a positive impact on your strength and stamina.  Remember to have it black, without creams, milk or sugar.  If you add these items to your coffee, you’ll be taken out of your fasted state.

HOW TO BREAK THE FAST

I recommend keeping the first two meals of the intermittent fasting meal plan healthy and not too heavy.  The goal is to eat just enough food to nourish your body and stave off hunger without overtaxing your digestive system. This will allow you to maximize energy and focus.

MEALS 1 & 2 EXAMPLE:

Option #1: Plain Greek Yogurt or Cottage Cheese topped with berries and almonds.
Option #2: Can of Tuna with Celery, an Apple and 1tbs of olive oil
Option #3: Chicken breast, Salad Greens, and Half an Avocado
Option #4: Omelette (2 whole eggs + 0.75-1 cup whites) and Berries
Option #5: 1/2 cup or 1 cup oatmeal with Flax seed, Hemp seed and blueberries on top
Option #6:  Omelette, 2 to 3 Rice Cakes with Almond or All Natural Peanut Butter

MEALS 3 EXAMPLES:

1. Chicken Breast, Veggies, Brown Rice, Coconut Oil used for cooking…

2. Extra Lean Ground beef or  lean cut of roast beef, small potato and veggies

3. Steak, Veggies, Sweet Potato

4.  Fish, Veggies, option of brown rice/sweet potato

Some people like to carb cycle – some like to do a keto diet and others enjoy combining intermittent fasting with carb cycling and keto diet.  Remember, Everyone’s body is biochemically unique, experiment and do what’s right for you.  To your health, results and Success!, I’m Lynn Thier – Your mental and physical trainer!

Become A Non-Smoker with Hypnosis!

Chances are great that if you could stop smoking by yourself, you would have done it already.

And if you are like millions of people in America, you’ve tried to quit in one way or another. But it draws you back! Do you want to stop smoking—for good?  Hypnosis can be your simple answer to finally freeing yourself from a complicated addiction. AND it’s works with the power of your own MIND!

please do not smoke!

If you are a smoker you know that smoking is not just about the chemical addiction to nicotine.  The habit of smoking can be linked to social/work situations, friends, stress, boredom, anxiety—cigarettes alone can even become somewhat of a “trusted companion”. It is deeply rooted in how and what we think and feel.  Finding and changing what DRIVES you to smoke is the key to stopping.

So How Does Hypnosis Help?

There are essentially 2 major parts of the mind: Conscious and Subconscious. The conscious mind is the mind that thinks while we are awake—it’s the part of your mind that knows: smoking is poisonous & incredibly damaging to your & other’s bodies, costs A LOT of money and wants to stop. The subconscious mind however, is the part of our mind that is unconscious & stores all of our habits—It’s the part that DRIVES us to smoke, drink, eat, and many times OVERRIDESwhat we may want in our conscious mind. It’s the part of our mind that ignores the health risks and picks up the cigarette anyway! Hypnosis allows you to powerfully work with your subconscious mind and introduce healthier thoughts & habits that will now be in line with your conscious choice to stop smoking. Hypnosis will help you finally stop FIGHTING against yourself!

But What If….

“gain weight…my best friends are smokers…I am surrounded by smokers everyday…I have a lot of stress at home or work and need cigarettes….etc.”

bigstock-Young-woman-breaking-cigarette-13020938The amazing part of our program is that we understand and take your personal concerns into consideration. Your Hypnosis Program will address you as a whole instead of a person wanting to only stop smoking. Therefore, your smoking cessation sessions will be geared toward addressing concerns such as managing anxiety, making healthier choices in eating, drinking water, exercising, and overall self esteem. This will allow you the best opportunity for quick and lasting success.

And What if INSTEAD….

You didn’t enjoy the taste or smell of a cigarette anymore?….You didn’t have to deal with the guilt or negative feelings associated with not being able to stop?…How easy would it be to stop smoking if you didn’t unconsciously reach for one every few minutes or hours?

Increase Confidence & Self Esteem!

Let me ask you…

What would it feel like if you felt good about yourself no matter what an outcome might be?
What would it feel like if you actually BELIEVED you were good enough, worthy, deserving?
What would it feel like if you no longer had the fear of being humiliated or of failing?
What would it feel like to be confident in your abilities?

Who has ever heard that “voice” in the back of your head – you know the one, that negative, critical, downright rude or even abusive thoughts or self talk?  Believe it or not it was the part of your mind that is designed to keep you safe! It is our instinctual, reactive, protective mind called the Unconscious mind. The other part of the mind called the Conscious is the part that is reading this information, understanding it, and thinking and choosing logically while you are awake. The conscious mind is vast and can do so much. However, the unconscious mind is the part that controls our automatic behaviors, habits, how we feel, how we respond to situations before we can think consciously; it’s the part that stores all of our habits, insecurities, and unconscious thoughts.

AnxietyWhy would the part of our mind that was designed to protect us, become so negative and self destructive at times? Well, simply put it starts when are born. We are completely open, pure and just love! Then we have to start living and surviving in the world. We are inundated with information from the moment we take our first breath as to how to survive and be safe in our environment. We learn  from our parents, teachers, relatives, TV, other people around us, etc.

Just think about what we were taught by surroundings…. “Don’t touch that, don’t think that, Don’t cross the street without us, you’ll get run over, You can’t do that yet, you’re not big enough, smart enough, tall enough, deserving enough, Failure is BAD so don’t do it unless you can be perfect!”  This becomes our inner voice to keep us surviving and it still plays when we are adults. The situations may change but the underlying inner voice of “can’t, shouldn’t, should, don’t deserve it, not worth it, etc.” unconsciously drives your life!

You can “UPDATE” Your Inner Voice!

What you may not know is that we can UPDATE this voice just like we can update a computer hard drive. Using the computer metaphor, the conscious mind is similar to the screen, that’s what we are focused on in that moment. The unconscious mind is similar to the hard-drive which holds all of the memory, programs, and ALLOWS us to do what we want to do.

If you want to go for an interview, or talk to someone you are attracted to, or take a chance of any kind, instinctually the red-alert “danger, danger” flags of the unconscious come up as it should because you have no idea what the outcome might be. So it starts giving the programs you have stored: depending on your past experience, you might hear – “you’ll fail for sure.” “You’ll look like a fool, you’re stupid, you’re not good enough for that job/girl/guy, etc.”

So, if you’re like most, you can’t stand that voice because it holds you back from even trying sometimes or in any event it just creates a lot of negativity and wastes energy even before anything happened! Then you logically try to convince yourself that “I’m worth it, I’m good enough, I can do it, I have confidence, etc.” And unfortunately, nothing positive happens except the voice answers back, “NO YOU’RE NOT!”

What happens if you try to create a beautiful picture on your computer one day….but you DO NOT have the software/program in your hard-drive? NOTHING!! You can try all you want, search for it, click every button, etc. but you are not going to be able to create that picture.

Hypnosis & Time Line Therapy Opens the Door

bigstock-Mature-businessman-shaking-han-14508995Hypnosis & Time Line Therapy are ways that can successfully open the doorway to the unconscious mind. It can bring you into a deep relaxed state of mind in which you can “update” your programs to include  beliefs such as: “I am good enough, smart enough, I am beautiful, I am confident, I am a risk taker because failing is NOT bad—it can lead me to more success than I could have ever imagined!”  You can’t convince or think yourself into more Self Esteem and Self Confidence—YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE IT AND FEEL IT from the inside out!

Is Stress & Anxiety holding you back?

In the world today, we are constantly bombarded with dead-lines, pressures, & demands from the outside world as well as self induced stress!  So, it’s not surprising to see the occurrence of anxiety & Stress-Related Disorders skyrocketing:

Stress symbol isolated on white background

Anxiety is a signal from your unconscious mind that your focusing on what you don’t want! And… The level of anxiety we experience can vary from mild, chronic to severe and debilitating. To whatever degree you experience anxiety—it affects YOUR ability to LIVE your life & robs us of our happiness .

bigstock-Worried-businessman-sitting-at-19499636Unfortunately the answer to becoming anxiety free is not to eliminate all the things that cause you stress. That is impossible and sometimes may not be a solution at all… That is because just like everything, our body learns through repetition. The more we react to stress with anxiety, fear, worry, etc. the more it becomes ingrained in our nervous system (our neurology) as the “common or automatic” way to react. Therefore, there can be times when there is absolutely nothing to logically worry about but you find yourself anxious, heart palpitating, preoccupied and thinking that you should be stressed about something.

This is where Hypnosis & Time Line Therapy(R) can help.

Calm no matter whatThere are essentially 2 parts of the mind—Conscious & Unconscious. The conscious mind is the part of the mind that thinks logically while we are awake. It’s the part of you that knows there is nothing to worry about or that doesn’t want to have anxiety anymore. The unconscious mind is the part of you that reacts to stress automatically, that constantly worries in the “back” of your mind, that is constantly thinking of the worst case scenario, and it’s the part of your mind that sets off the entire “physiological” body response—sweating, increased heartbeats, “knots” in the stomach, cold-sweating hands, etc.

Hypnosis brings you to a state of deep relaxation in which the unconscious mind can now be worked with. This is where you can open to thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that are in line with your conscious desire to be anxiety free. Time Line Therapy is a combination of hypnosis and NLP where we can take you into your past to release negative emotions, limiting beliefs as well as take you into the future to get rid of anxiety.

Stress will always be a part of life & working with your unconscious mind will give you the opportunity to HANDLE stress in a more positive way.

How would it feel if you could just breathe and truly let go of your anxiety with each breath?
What would it feel like if you were in control of your body & mind again?
What would it feel like if you had the ability to handle whatever stress came your way—instead of avoiding stress because you were not sure how you would react?
Would you have more energy? Feel more Alive and Free? More relaxed? More confident?

Entrepreneurs use Hypnosis & NLP in Business!

I came across and interesting article from Forbes called Using Hypnosis to be better in business and its not suprising how many entrepreneurs, CEO’s use these modalities that work with our unconscious minds!

Entrepreneurs and executives use many tools and rituals to stay focused and get ahead.  Winston Churchill worked from his bed each morning, and President Harry Truman would down a shot of bourbon after a brisk walk each morning before his days. But some leaders follow slightly more mysterious regimens to hone their psychological prowess.

“It’s remarkable just how many celebrities use hypnosis—how many CEOs and heads of production companies,” says Dr. Steve G. Jones, a hypnotherapist based in Savannah, Georgia, who charges $25,000 for two hour sessions with top executives, actors, directors and producers. “…It’s sort of a secret weapon for a lot of very successful, very wealthy people.”

Jones spends the first hour of his sessions simply speaking with his clients to get to know them and understand the goals they wish to achieve through hypnotherapy. “I’m looking for what it is that’s getting in their way,” he says. “Sometimes it’s just a life event—divorce, someone died, some sort of illness, they got fired.” Jones also searches for his clients’ strengths, or a hero they have that’s real or imagined that he can use to inspire their subconscious selves.

As far as goals are concerned, mostly it comes down to money. “Usually they say, ‘I want to make X amount of money per year,” says Jones. “That’s not really a juicy enough goal. It’s got to be something that there’s passion about.” Instead, he zeros in on what his client could create that’s positive that might result in a large payday.

Hour two of Jones’ sessions consists of the actual hypnosis. “I get them focused on the success they’ve had in the past and anchor them to that so they can move through that in the future,” he says. If clients have not had tremendous successes, he has them imagine what success might feel like – or to grasp onto their strengths or personal hero – and connects them to those emotions to boost their confidence. Though it’s difficult to calculate – and all patients are different – Jones claims the effects of his sessions last an average of six months.

Alicia Cramer is another practitioner of the hypnotic arts. Certified by the Hypnosis Motivation Institute in Tarzana, Calif., Cramer has practiced since 2010. She was first exposed to hypnotherapy after using the treatment to overcome post-traumatic stress after falling victim to physical and sexual assault in 2005. “Getting into it I was a general hypnotherapist, which means that people would seek me out for things like weight loss, smoking, sleeping issues, stress and anxiety.”

Cramer soon found that the clients she gravitated to more profoundly were those in need of help overcoming obstacles in the entrepreneurial and business realm.  Today Cramer works primarily with clients focused on maximizing their effectiveness in business, operating entirely through internet connection from her home in Wausau, Wisconsin. “If somebody is terrified of public speaking and they need to have that skill to further their business or their career, hypnosis is a really effective technique,” she says. “But I also attract a lot of clients that just have extreme stress and anxiety.”

NLP

Another tool entrepreneurs, businesspeople and leaders can use to communicate more effectively is neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). The practice focuses on the use of body language to express emotion, send messages to others and command the attention of those with whom you’re speaking. FORBES spoke with Rachel Hott, of the NLP Center of New York , to learn more about how it can be used by the career-oriented. According to Hott, NLP can be most simply described as “an awareness of communication both non-verbally and verbally.”

In addition to placing emphasis on making sure your body language matches your message, NLP encourages its practitioners to watch how others speak, sit or behave. By matching them and understanding how they communicate, one is more able to achieve their trust and connect with them. “Entrepreneurs have to sell their ideas,” says Hott. “They have to meet with investors or meet with potential customers.” Dressing, behaving and even speaking – voice, tone and tempo – strengthens the connection and builds rapport. “That approximation of nonverbally saying ‘we’re the same.’”

Hott says she’s worked with business owners who were toiling to get startups off the ground. In those cases, unlocking their belief in themselves was key. “They really needed to feel ready to meet with investors and a lot of the work was about how to connect with their level of confidence and competence.”

Entrepreneurs can also use NLP on themselves. Says Hott: “What do you need to say to yourself to get the next task done? What do you need to see yourself in your successful moment? We explore how you talk to yourself, how you visualize, what you imagine you would feel like—we set up more outcome-oriented statements to help others.”

Conspiracy theorist have pinned President Barack Obama as a practitioner of NLP, claiming that his use of rhythm and tone in speeches is part of a subliminal form of hypnotism used to influence the masses. Crazy-talk aside, leaders and ambitious figures have used body-language, verbal cadence, mild hypnosis, expressions of emotion and symbolism to stoke the fervor of groups of people for generations, from the steps of the Athenian acropolis to the locker rooms of high school football teams. Might mass inspiration be the product of a form of hypnotism? Perhaps. Either way, entrepreneurs across the spectrum would do well to further develop their grasp of the psychological arts.
