I’ve been reading/listening to a good number of shorts this week and have found some lovely ones! All of them are available online, so click the links if you’re curious!
1. Such Thoughts Are Unproductive by Rebecca Campbell, Clarkesworld Magazine, Issue 159:
It only takes a few words when it’s people like us, the imperfect citizens of this perfectly known world. She told me things I do not wish to know, because they hurt to know, then we both looked instinctively for cameras and drones and...

Rec: Moïra Fowley-Doyle’s Books

Our family tree blew down in a gale and we are the bad apples it shook off.
I read Moïra Fowley-Doyle’s Spellbook of the Lost and Found last year and absolutely adored it. Set in Ireland, the book has a sweet f/f pairing, bi rep, great relationships between siblings and friends, and lovely prose. It’s a magical realism novel and does the genre proud. It totally captivated me and I really wanted to check out her other works, so I bought All the Bad Apples recently. I’m really enjoying it so...

Review Policy

I don’t take on a lot of review requests as I’ve got an epic TBR pile and I’m a full time student. That said, if you are an indie/self-published author of an LGBT book or a novella of the fantasy/science fiction variety, feel free to email me about a review and if I have the time, and if the plot appeals to me, I’ll give it a go. The Wonderful World of Sci-Fi Shorts
[image error]
I have fallen in love with sci-fi short stories. There’s something quite fun about a short, to the point story with a punchy setting. Sometimes it’s hard to find the time to sit down with a big ol’ book of sci-fi even when you’re in the mood, so the short ones are really good for giving you something fun to read that you can finish in under an hour. I started the year with The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin and The Butcher of Anderson Station by James S.A. Corey, and...

Mini Review Roundup:
Skinner Box by Carole Johnstone | available for free here. | science fiction, short story, romance, horror
Can a cognitive neuroscientist be fooled? Can an expert in the field of deep learning and AI evolution be unknowingly coerced? Can a genius be corrupted? Can a manipulator be manipulated?
Wow. This started out one kind of intense and then turned into a whole other kind of intense and I’m fairly darn impressed. Be sure to mind the warnings at the top, but I...

Show Review | Slasher: The Executioner (2016)
Slasher is a horror/mystery show that follows a new case/new cast every season. The first season, subtitled The Executioner, follows Sarah Bennett, played by the brilliant Katie McGrath, and her husband Dylan, played by Brandon Jay McLaren, after they return to Waterbury, Canada, a town with a dark past. Sarah’s parents were murdered before she was born (the death scenes are gruesome and yes, that’s how she was born, it’s awful). But despite this horrific past, she and Dylan are coming back...

Book Review: What Kind of Girl
[image error]
Why did it take me so long to reach the last straw?
This is an absolutely beautiful, gut-punching book. 4.5/5 rounded up. The only reason it’s not a full five stars is because there were a few bits that I felt went on for too long, but overall I thought it was wonderfully well done.
I need you to say that you’ll love me whether I change the world or not.
It’s rare for me to find a book that writes anxiety well. Few enough do, but this one definitely makes the list. I’m utterly...

When Octavia Coal goes to the mountains to clear her head, she doesn’t expect to find an angel in trouble.
He tells her his name is Tamiel and he’s one of the Irin – the army of angels tasked with keeping demons from overwhelming humanity. But Tamiel broke a sacred law – he fell in love with a human – and now he’s being hunted by the same angels he once served.
With nowhere else to go, Octavia and Tamiel – along with Jack, the human in question, and...
New Release: Dust & Lightning (2020)
I’m so, so happy to share my new novella with everyone! In this story you shall find: space shenanigans, a grumpy cat and a grumpier MC, friendship and banter, no romance, lots of adventure, and one dastardly group determined to ruin everyone’s day.
Synopsis: In the near future, humans have gone beyond simple space travel. By the year 4054, multiple solar systems are inhabited, and taking a spaceship is as commonplace as taking an aeroplane.
Unfortunately, not everything about the future is...
