Film Review: Tomb Raider (2018)

love the Tomb Raider remake. I adored the Angelina Jolie ones back in the day and was quite attached to them, but I think the new version is probably my favourite. And Alicia Vikander is such perfect casting!

The film reboots the franchise and follows Lara who has spent years refusing to believe her missing father, played by Dominic West, to be dead. She works as a bike courier and has no interest in taking over his estate, but shes finally convinced to return to her childhood home and,...

Film Review: What Happened to Monday (2017)

What Happened to Monday, or Seven Sisters, was far from what I was expecting. Noomi Rapace is a treasure. It fits in well with Gattaca, Children of Men and V for Vendetta, my favourite dystopian films. This one is set in 2073 when the world population has grown to such a degree that theres little food, little space and a lot of problems. To counter this, the Child Allocation Bureau is created to ensure that only one child is born to every couple. No siblings allowed. The leader of the...

Indie Book Promo Post

Hi guys! Fancy checking out an indie author?

To date, Ive published two standalone novels, a novella, one series, and an anthology with several other talented writers. But Im struggling to get more readers. Its a tough industry to break into! So I thought Id make a promo post to try and put a spotlight on my books.

Id be absolutely grateful to anyone willing to give them a chance.

A Non-Fiction Book Rec Post

I undoubtedly read more fiction than non-fiction, but Im trying to improve that. I read a lot of non-fiction for my studies, but not enough on other subjects. Sometimes theres just not enough time to read all the books! Im currently in the midst of two right now, Gold Rush Manliness: Race and Gender on the Pacific Slope and Everything You Love Will Burn: Inside the Rebirth of White Nationalism in America, which I just started. One Im reading paperback, the other Im listening to on audio.

Learning Korean

My copy of Korean Made Simple finally arrived in the post! Duolingos really fun, but I do find that Im wanting more writing exercises and more detailed explanations. (Eggbun is another fun one Im trying and it comes with a Korean keyboard, which is definitely a bonus.) This guides been recommended by a few sites and so far it looks really good. Cant wait to get started on the exercises. Has anyone else tried this one? What are your thoughts?

I also found this video really helpful for...

Audiobook Review: Swimming in the Dark (2020)

Swimming in the Dark by Tomasz Jedrowski, narrated by Robert Nairne

When it comes to audiobooks Im insanely picky about narrators. Storytelling is just as important as writing, after all. Let me just saw that not only is the writing for this book beautiful, so too is the narration. I totally, totally recommend the audiobook.

May Books 2020

Gold Rush Manliness [non-fiction, history] Really liking this one so far! It focuses on how race and views on masculinity affected the men and women of the gold rushes in California and British Columbia. I have to finish up its review by the end of the month.

Swimming in the Dark [lgbt, historical fiction] I just started this one and I have a feeling its going to break my heart in beautiful ways. The writing is so lush. It follows a young gay man in 1980s Poland.

Agnes Grey [classics]...

Show Review: Zone Blanche (2017)

Zone Blanche, or Black Spot, is a dark and twisty show. (Im still not clear as to how a show with the name White Zone gets an English title of Black Spot, but I digress ) It follows the residents of a small French town, Villefranche, which is surrounded by miles and miles of forest. It has a murder rate six times the national average and very little technology. (Even microwaves are known to fritz out.)

Prior to the events of the show, the mayors daughter went missing. No one knows...

Audiobook Review: Casino Royale (1953)

Casino Royale by Ian Fleming, narrated by Dan Stevens

Well, if he had to die anyway, he might as well try it the hard way.

Okay, well, Dan Stevens narrating this probably made me like it more than I otherwise would have. This is one of those rare moments where Ive found the film far superior to the book. Now, I understand the book was written in 1953, but Bonds remarks about rape and how useless he finds Vesper really grated at my nerves. Also, he calls her a bitch far too often. Sit down,...
