Numenera’s First Year
Well, okay. Numenera came out in August, so it’s only been five months, not a whole year. But as we wave goodbye to 2013, I’m prompted to think about the game and the game line looking back and looking forward.
Obviously, Numenera’s birth came in 2012 with the launch of its record-smashing Kickstarter campaign. That was a heady time, but also pretty scary. We had set out to make a single, small-ish black and white book. Now we were committed to creating a line of full-color deluxe products. Co...

Two Kickstarters
My team is getting ready to have an AAR meeting (After Action Report) regarding The Strange Kickstarter. This will likely be a very long meeting, because I think that there will be a lot to say.
It’s been interesting to run a second major rpg Kickstarter campaign a year after our first one. The first,Numenera, broke records in terms of funding raised. While those records have since been broken, Numenera remains the highest grossing Kickstarter, ever, for a new, original tabletop rpg.
And now the...

What Makes for a Good Playtester (redux)
As we head into the playtesting period for The Strange, I am reminded of an article I wrote last year about what I think makes for a good playtester. Here are the salient points from that article about what sorts of feedback I think a playtester should provide:
1. Appropriate feedback. An important part of being a playtester is the ability to understand what it is you’re looking at, and understand what portion of the process you are a part of. For example, if someone sends you a rough version o...

Backing The Strange Kickstarter
The Strange Kickstarterhas 9 days left. We’re nearing $250,000, at which point we unlock a big stretch goal: a deluxe, leatherbound version of the corebook with special endpapers, a bookmark, color plates, and high quality, gilt pages. If you’ve seen the Numenera deluxe corebook, you know that these books are things of beauty.
But I digress.
Funding-wise, we’re at about the same level as Numenera was at this point in the campaign, which is thrilling and exciting. However, we don’t have quite as...
