another Bujold podcast... no, the OTHER Bujold
May be heard here.
Episode 22 of the postcast "Something Rather Than Nothing" interviews metals artist Anne Bujold.
As an interviewee, one finds oneself very much in the hands of the interviewer in these things. If you get good questions, you can give good answers.

more foreign covers
Some more author's copies drifted in this week.
Memory, simplified Chinese, front, back, and wrap sleeve:

The Vor Game, ditto:

I'm not sure how long ago these were published -- these things can sometimes take quite a while to wend their way to me -- or if these are recent reprints, but there ya go.
The box also included, at last, my copies of the very nice Japanese edition of Penric's Progress, shown earlier in this blog.

new Bujold podcast interview is up
A few weeks ago, I again did a telephone interview with Baen senior editor Tony Daniel for their just-released hardcover collection Penric's Progress. We had a fun conversation (or anyway, I did, since it's mostly me babbling on for forty or so minutes.) Now up online here:

Podcast designation BFRH 2020 01 31: Lois McMaster Bujold on Penric’s Progress

unexpected art
Every once in a while, I am reminded that the world is even weirdly richer than I thought.
My daughter, a metals artist, recently completed this commission of a decorative throwing ax for a biology professor who is a member of an all-women throwing-ax team. I did not before know that ax throwing even was a competitive sport...

More of Anne's art at https://annebujold.com/
(Also this link, which I've posted before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYdT_... )
Display rack woodwork by Ken Fisher, a BFA student at the Appalachian Center for Craft, where Anne is currently an artist-in-residence. "Natural Selection" is the name of the ax team.
(This particular ax, though full sized, is not actually for throwing.)

Penric's Progress releases today
Be it noted.
Now we'll find out how many people actually are still reading books on paper...
Don from Uncle Hugo's SF Bookstore here in Minneapolis stopped out yesterday with a couple of cartons to get signed, for in-store and mail order, so they're all ready for you. Plus wherever you usually buy books, I trust. (I'd be interested in hearing about sightings in the wild.)

Penric's Progress comes out this week!
The lovely Baen hardcover collection of the first 3 Penric & Desdemona novellas releases, officially, Tuesday the 7th, but should be leaking into bookstores now -- Uncle Hugo's just got a partial shipment, which owner Don will bring out to my place for signing early next week.
As a reprint collection, chasing bestseller lists would be futile, so it doesn't really have a hard on-sale date. However, most booksellers won't know this, so getting a copy early would be hit or miss. Come Tuesday, that should be moot.
Also due to its reprint status, it will have an uphill slog getting bookstore placement and reviews. So don't just wait for it to just appear in your favorite bookstore -- ask. Order. Many people have reviewed the stories separately, so new reader reviews (yours), out and about on the net, will be especially important to get the word out for this edition.

(Yes, there will be a mass market paperback edition eventually, but that will be then. This is now.)
This is going to be a very interesting test of how many people are still reading books on paper. Right now, I have theories; later, I will have data, always better.

this 'n that
This week has kicked up a lot of as-it-were sedimentary material from my prior PR, because the internet remembers everything, apparently, sort of like the Mind of God. (If this fact does not appall you, I can only conclude you are still young and innocent. So far.) One of the more delightful bits of older fanac, clearly created by persons vastly more media-tech-savvy than I am, was this one --
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRyMH...
The other issue probably worth half a post is pronunciation. A few of the recurring ones --
Barrayar -- BEAR-ah-yar. (A surprising number of people seem to want to divide it between the two Rs, which I can't even wrap my mouth around.)
Vorkosigan -- VorKOHs'gan.
Bujold -- BOO-zhold. (French J, not Spanish, nor whichever languages pronounce a J as a Y. The first syllable is not very strongly accented.)
If anyone has any more pronunciation puzzles, pop them into the comments, and I'll do my best to answer.

2012 Bujold interview
I was reminded by the stream of nice things going by today of this not-very-old video interview, definitely one of the better ones. In general, I prefer to do email interviews these days, or at least get to edit the transcription, because while I write reasonably coherently, I talk in first draft. And there are cogent reasons why I don't show my first drafts. However, a lot of this covered frequently asked questions -- many of which still turn up in my Author's Q&A feature here on Goodreads -- so I was able to draw smoothly on my frequent answers.

I must remember I have this link for the Q&A column.
(I see I was still in the middle of the long-hair-again experiment at that point. To which I concluded, yes, I could still grow it out, given enough years to do so; no, this conveys no benefit.)
