Bujold interview at Clarkesword Magazine is up

I did this ginormously long interview for Clarkesworld Magazine a few weeks back; now up.

Penric's Travel's due out next week

Just a reminder, the Baen hardcover collection of the next three Penric & Desdemona novellas is due to release next week. (I had dimly had it in my mind that it was later in May, so this snuck up on me.) Book distribution being somewhat disrupted at the moment, the books will get to the vendors when they get there, but Uncle Hugo's and Dreamhaven here in Minneapolis will have signed copies for mail order in due course. I'll post again when Hugo's receives theirs.

I do think this cover is the best one from Baen yet, and not only because I'm partial to blue.

So all you folks who have been asking for the Penric stories on paper, there you go.

This collection contains "Penric's Mission", "Mira's Last Dance", and "The Prisoner of Limnos".

Ta, L.

May 2 addendum: Ha! UPS stealthily left my box of author's copies in my entryway today. So they are indubitably In Print.

Usually they arrive about 3 or 4 weeks before my books are released in stores, so the distribution system may be running a bit behind. But as a reprint collection, it's not exactly chasing the big bestseller lists, so herding sales in at the official release date is less critical for me than some other authors with new books caught up in current events.

indie bookstore reminder

Just a note, while indie F&SF&comics bookstores Uncle Hugo's and Dreamhaven here in Minneapolis have had to close their storefronts for the duration, both can still do mail orders. Uncle Hugo's has almost all my titles pre-signed and ready to go, including the recent and lovely Penric's Progress hardcover novella reprint collection from Baen, and Knife Children, the hardcover novella from Subterranean Press. Dreamhaven also has those and other of my titles in stock, and much else besides.

And both could surely use the business right now.

Orphans of Raspay on Audio in July?

Just spotted: an Audible entry that claims that the 7th Penric & Desdemona novella, "The Orphans of Raspay", is scheduled for release in audio on July 14th. There is a pre-order page up. Yay!

Through Blackstone Audiobooks as usual. Too early for the narrator to be named or the cover to be displayed yet, it seems. I'll keep an eye out.

Lois in the WSJ today

So, I got quoted in the Wall Street Journal -- about my retirement hobby, of all things. The whole article (which is actually about streaming TV; my remark is just an embellishment) is behind some sort of wall, pay or otherwise, so I'm not sure of the context in which my little sound bite is embedded, but the freelancer kindly supplied me with my bit.

(My mother's favorite paper, back when. I'm not sure if she'd have been thrilled or not. One the one hand, the WSJ. On the other, weird Japanese cartoons, which I'm pretty sure she'd have grokked even less than she did my F&SF.)

An Expert’s Pick: ‘Mushi-shi’

(Crunchyroll, Hulu)

Novelist Lois McMaster Bujold, whom the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America named a Grand Master in 2019, has discovered many new favorite animated movies and TV shows since she took up streaming. Here, she shares her favorite.

“I discovered Crunchyroll—a streaming service devoted to Japanese animation and other Asian videos—about three years ago, when I first got into TV streaming with my Chromecast device, and it has provided me with far too many hours of entertainment since. It has the second season of my favorite anime series of all time, “Mushi-shi.” The show is subtle, beautiful, brilliant, and hard to describe. It follows the adventures of “Ginko,” an itinerant medicine seller who deals with supernatural problems generated by his mysterious subject of study, magical sub-life-forms dubbed mushi. The episodes are self-contained, so a viewer can just drop in and pick up the gist of it. There’s no long plot arc to follow. That said, the world-building is more smoothly taught back in season one, which you can find on Hulu.”

Knife Children sold out at publisher

Which does not mean all copies are sold, just that all copies are shipped, off to the vendors. (It also may mean underprinting... hard to say.)

I just signed a box of copies for Dreamhaven Book & Comics here in Minneapolis, and Uncle Hugo's is also well stocked.

http://www.unclehugo.com/prod/index.s...

Hugo's and Dreamhaven also still have in stock several prior novellas of mine that are sold out at Subterranean, including "The Flowers of Vashnoi", so check them out if you are looking for earlier volumes. Signed!

(Hugo's and Dreamhaven both report brisk sales this past week, as people apparently stock up as if for a siege. Because no one would want to be stuck in their house for weeks with nothing to read... Remember, both stores do mail orders.)

Knife Children hardcover now at Uncle Hugo's

Signed! Owner Don brought a couple of cartons of the new Subterranean Press edition of the novella out for me to sign this afternoon, so they're now in the store and ready to go for in-store or mail-order sales.

Knife Children hardcover on Amazon

Aha, I see the Amazon page for the Subterranean Press edition of "Knife Children" is up. It had been AWOL, but is now found.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/159...

It is listed as "temporarily out of stock" because the books are still en route from the printer, but they are on the way. As soon as Uncle Hugo's here in Minneapolis receives theirs, I'll be signing their stock for mail order and in-store.

3/12 -- Got my box of author's copies yesterday. Real Soon Now...

I was given to understand SubPress's sale dates were more on the order of guidelines, so this remains within expectations. They aren't chasing/gaming bestseller lists the way the big publishers do for their lead titles, so the on-sale dates aren't hard. Except for the online sellers, who are bot-driven and thus more rigid.

Orphans of Raspay, Knife Children at SubPress

It's a busy Bujold week at Subterranean Press. The hardcover of the 7th Penric & Desdemona novella, "The Orphans of Raspay", just went up for pre-order. Publication planned for June-ish. Striking cover, I think.

https://subterraneanpress.com/orphans...

And "Knife Children", a novella in the world of the Sharing Knife tetralogy, should be shipping this week. I'll be signing stock for Uncle Hugo's and Dreamhaven bookstores here in Minneapolis when it arrives live.
