Just As I Am by Faith Blum

Faith Blum's newest novella is available! This one is double trouble! Not only is it about twins, but these twins have reckless and adventurous spirits. When they go against their family, they run into more trouble than they bargained for.
About the Book

Eve and Evangeline Collins are adventurous twins who decide to take a risk and head west as mail order brides. Their parents are less than pleased, but do nothing to stop them. Eve and Eva don’t realize their danger until they stop just outside Cheyenne. Will they ever see their family again?

When she isn’t writing, Faith enjoys doing many right-brained activities such as reading, crafting, playing piano, and playing games with her family. One of her dreams is to visit Castle City, Montana, to see the ghost town she chose for her characters to live in. She currently lives on a hobby farm with her family in Wisconsin.

Excerpt
On Friday, Evangeline and Eve said tearful goodbyes at the house. Mr. Collins brought them to the train station, asked the conductor to keep an eye on his girls, and then went back home with a prayer in his heart.
Once they got on the train, Eve and Evangeline chattered to each other about all the people on board and the scenery that hurried past. They made up stories for some of the more interesting-looking people and buildings.
After one of the stops, a mother with two young children sat across from them. She had a fussy little girl and an older boy. The boy looked restless, so Eve and Evangeline told him some of the stories they had made up earlier on the trip. The next day, his mother thanked them for entertaining her son.
Evangeline beamed. “You’re welcome, Ma’am. It was nice having an audience besides my sister.”
Ten days later, they arrived in Fort Robinson, Nebraska.
“I am exhausted!” Eve exclaimed.
“Me, too. But there’s no rest for the weary. We only have a couple hours before the stagecoach leaves for Cheyenne. Maybe we’ll be the only passengers and can actually get some sleep.”
“On a stagecoach?” Eve asked. “I doubt that. Let’s find the stagecoach office.”
At the office, they paced up and down the street until the man inside came out to find out what they were doing.
“Waiting for the stagecoach,” Eve said.
“It won’t be here for at least one more hour. Why don’t you two take a stroll around town and come back in an hour?”
Evangeline nodded, trying to keep a straight face. As soon as the man went inside, she giggled.
“What is so funny?” Eve asked, taking her sister’s arm and pulling her down the boardwalk.
“That man doesn’t want us pacing in front of his office.”
“No, he doesn’t, but why do you think it so funny?”
Evangeline shrugged. “I don’t know. It probably has something to do with being tired.”

A Love to Come Home to by Alicia G. Ruggieri
I am delighted to announce the final book in the A Time of Grace Trilogy. I have loved every moment of working on these cover designs. So, without further ado, the A Love to Come Home To.
Hardened Ben Picoletti thought he’d turned his back on Depression-era Rhode Island years ago. Nothing remains there for him, except for haunting memories of an abusive childhood. Yet when a criminal accusation shatters his ambitions, Ben has nowhere to flee but back to his stepfather’s home.
There, he finds that redemption yet waits for him… but the sacrifice required to attain it may exceed the limits of his family’s hearts.
Meanwhile, his musical sister Grace continues her studies in New York. She longs to hear a word of affection from her high-school beau… yet only Paulie’s silence greets her. Grace must decide whether she wants to live in the past or move into an unknown future with unexpected love.Lyrical and sensitive to the aching heart, A Love to Come Home To affirms that God delights in being a stronghold in times of trouble; that He renews His mercy every morning; and that He will work every bitter thing together for the good of His children.

Alicia G. Ruggieri writes grace-filled, Christ-centered fiction, including the A Time of Grace Trilogy. She’s a graduate of Rhode Island College, where she studied Communications and History, and her adventures include children’s theatre direction, restaurant management, and small business ownership. Alicia and her husband live in coastal New England, where she may be found drinking far too much coffee and penning stories with her emotionally-disturbed second-hand pug by her side.

Excerpt

The bus was quiet on the way home. I sat by myself and thumbed through the Bible on my reader. I skimmed the virtual pages, picking up random verses.
My times are in Thy hands… deliver me… from them that persecute me…
I jumped when Cami slipped across the aisle and squeezed in next to me. I looked at her face and instantly knew what she was going to ask.
“Can you?”
I held out my hand. She pressed a tiny chip into my palm.
I closed out my window and snapped the chip into my reader. The screen chirped.
Cami explained while I navigated my library to find the appropriate file. “The Marksens, the new people, had their data wiped.”
“Weren’t they caught transmitting?”
“Yeah. Apparently the father signed the file to keep his job, but the kids hadn’t. Or something. But they lost all their data.” She picked at the bench with her fingernail. “Dad wanted me to ask you to do it.”
I didn’t need an explanation. I knew why I always made the copies, even though Cami’s reader was perfectly capable. Everyone else stopped making copies after my mother died.
I suppose they stopped for the same reason my father kept doing it—and kept letting me do it. Even if his wife had died for violating the “no transmitting” law.
I suspected the commander knew what I was doing. After all, my device was continually connected to the camp’s cloud. He could monitor my activity if he wanted to. I assumed he didn’t care, not if I limited my distribution to my fellow inmates. We were all criminals anyway.
I knew he would care if he found out my dad was transmitting copies from work.
“Thanks,” Cami said finally.
I nodded and tapped the screen. The progress bar seemed stuck at 15%. Usually it took about three seconds, five if my dinosaur of an electronic was feeling grumpy.
“Something wrong?” Cami asked, probably more worriedly than she intended.
“It’s stuck. I’m going to try again.” I canceled the transfer and backed out to the menu. I clicked on the Bible folder and got a hideous beep. I shuddered and looked at the screen.
It said: File not found.
I frowned and backed out a few folders, then went in another way. This time, I couldn’t even find the folder.
“What’s wrong?”
“It’s gone.”
“What?”
“My Bible—the file. It’s gone.”
Author InterviewSo, Aubrey, tell us a bit about you.Hi! Big secret, but my real name is actually Rachel Greene, but I’ve been writing under the penname Aubrey Hansen for years and am not about to let it go. I’m in my twenties, run purely on caffeine, and have (partially) bright pink hair. When I’m not writing my own books or building my company, Penoaks Publishing, I’m either watching movies or working with animals. I train dogs and have six assorted animals in my house, plus a husband. We live in the Kansas City area.
What can you tell us about the world of Red Rain.Philadelphia’s future is one where the “United,” a one-world government, has stomped out all individuality in favor of a fake unity. Social structures, racial heritage and patriotism, and religion are all outlawed in an attempt to make society “one.” The result is a strict mold enforced with even stricter rules and punishments, and there’s no room for freedom of religion...
What inspired the character of Philadelphia? At first Philli was just a first-person voice, a lens with which to view the transpiring events. I think it took me just as long to realize what made her unique as it did for her to discover herself. I think the realization that we have something to contribute, and we can do great good even if it’s in small ways, is a notion we all have to discover as we grow up.
What can you tell us about the sequel?Philadelphia gets arrested. Cea reveals that she and Ephesus have been up to some interesting exploits. A forgotten friend walks back into Philli’s life. Things explode. (No, really, they do.) Oh, and half of the book is told from Dr. Nic’s POV.
What other projects do you have in the works? As I type this, I’m working on finishing a collection of Christmas-themed short stories featuring the characters from Peter’s Angel—a little Christmas present for my readers. I’m also working on editing and photographing a homemade frappe recipe book—a completely new project for me. In other news, my film mentor will be flying over from Hollywood to direct my first feature film in October.
Thank you so much for stopping by and spending time with us. It has been wonderful to learn more about you and your many projects. I personally am eagerly awaiting the sequel to Red Rain.Tour Schedule June 2 Bookish Orchestrations-Tour Introduction and ExcerptLaurel’s Leaves-Author InterviewFrances Hoelsema-ExcerptAubrey Hansen, Author and Screenwriter-ExcerptPerpetual Gardener, Writer, and Mormon-Book SpotlightThe Overactive imagination-Book Spotlight

Excerpt Katie took a deep breath to calm herself. There was really no reason to be quite so nervous. She had been on her own for more than ten years now and done quite well for herself. Naturally, she would be a little nervous as she left her hometown for the first time to go all the way to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Cheyenne was a wild place, but if Katie knew anything about herself, it was that she could handle wild people and wild places.
She stepped inside the dark train car and waited for her eyes to adjust to the dim lighting. In the back corner sat a young woman all alone. The woman fidgeted like a cat scared of its own shadow. Perhaps she could help calm her own nervousness by helping someone else.
Katie strode up the narrow aisle to the seat where the young woman sat. “May I sit next to you?”
The young woman looked up at her. Her blue eyes were full of fear. “Yes, if you’d like.”
Katie smiled. “Thank you. I’ve never traveled outside the city before and wouldn’t mind a little company.”
The young woman bit her lip. “I don’t know how good of company I’ll be, but you’re welcome to try.”
Katie chuckled. “My name is Katie. What’s yours?”
“Joanna.”
The train whistle blew and the train jolted as it started on its way. Katie watched the city fade away into the distance and decided conversation probably wasn’t the best idea at the moment.
The train clacked on and the murmur of voices surrounded them. Katie wasn’t sure what to talk about with this stranger and the motion of the train lulled her into a fitful nap.
She woke with a start sometime later and looked around. A piece of paper in Joanna’s hand caught her eye. “What is that?”
Joanna looked up at her. “A letter.”
Katie smiled. “Do you have a sweetheart waiting for you?”
“Not really.”
Katie’s smile faded. “What do you mean?”
Joanna’s eyes darted around as she tried to decide what to say.
Katie put her hand on the girl’s shoulder. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to.”
“I’d like to tell someone.”
“But you aren’t sure you can trust me?”
Joanna met her eyes for the first time since they’d met. “Yes.”
“Your secrets are safe with me.”
Joanna smiled shyly. “Thank you. This letter isn’t actually written to me. My friend Mildred wrote to a man in Cheyenne who was looking for a wife. He wrote back and sent her the tickets to go out there. She panicked because she suddenly wasn’t sure she wanted to become a wife on the frontier.” Joanna clenched her hands together and fell silent.

Author Interview with Faith Blum - Space Kitties Anthology 2
Today I am celebrating the new release of the second Space Kitties Anthology! To honor the occasion, I am hosting and interview with my friend and fellow writer, Faith Blum. She contributed a story to the anthology inspired by something we both love.
Hello Faith and welcome!
What is the synopsis of your Space Kitties tale?
My name is Data and I am a cat. I never expected to go on a spaceship or become a hero. Somehow, though, God had plans for both to happen. This is my story.
What inspired you to write it?
Well, E. Kaiser kept kind of bugging me about it, but since I normally write Westerns, I wasn't really sure I could do anything. Then I decided to take my love of cats and Star Trek and put them together into a short story that I wasn't sure I would submit. Then I kind of fell in love with Data and the rest of the cats, so I quickly edited it and sent it in.
How long did it take you to write?
I really don't remember when I started or finished, but I think it only took a couple of weeks.
Was there any music you liked to listen to while you wrote?
I can't remember for sure, but I'm sure it involved my Star Trek Pandora station.
What was your reaction when you found out that your story had been selected for the anthology?
Jaw-dropping surprise. I didn't expect to win at all. I'm not a sci-fi writer, didn't really do any world-building, and even made my "chapter headings" basically the same as the Star Trek theme:
Space...
The last frontier. These are the voyages of the cat Data. His mission: To exterminate all mice, to aid the crew in searching for new life, and new cultures. To daringly go where no cat has gone before.
Are you a plotter or a panster?
Mostly panster, but I do plot sometimes, especially when I get stuck.
What elements does your ideal story contain?
Something to do with the Old West, maybe a mail order bride or a gunslinger, a touch of romance, a mystery, and a realistic timeline and plot.
Has there been an author or non-author person who has influenced your writing more than anyone else?
This is probably a cliche answer for a Christian author, but God has influenced me the most. Even when I don't really realize, sometimes. My latest novel, The Solid Rock, really showed me that. I wrote the rough draft in July 2015, but didn't edit it until Octoberish. Some of the things the main character was going through, and the advice he got were so pertinent to what I needed at that time. God is amazing that way!
Have you written any other books?
Yes, I have. I have a total of 10 books published. The Hymns of the West is a 5 novel series showing how God's providence brings two families with two different worldviews of living together in ways only He could have planned. My spin-off series of Hymns of the West Novellas is based on minor characters introduced in books 3 and 5 of the novel series, although only three are published yet, the other three are coming out in June, July, and August 2016. I also have a short story published in an anthology with 5 other authors and a Science Fiction short story collection.
What stories can we expect from you in the future?
As I just mentioned, I have three novellas coming out the next three months. I'm also working on my next series which should be published in early 2017. That series is all about orphans. I have some other projects I'm working on as well, but I'm keeping my lips sealed on those for a while yet.
Author Bio:
Faith Blum started writing at an early age. She started even before she could read! She even thought she could write better than Dr. Seuss. Now that she's grown up a little more, she knows she will probably never reach the success of Dr. Seuss, but that doesn't stop her from trying.

Faith Blum's Cover Reveals

Who doesn't like a scavenger hunt? I suppose it depends on the kind of scavenger hunt, but Faith Blum is with us today to reveal the covers for her three upcoming novellas.

First, here are the descriptions of each book:
Just a Closer WalkKatie and Joanna meet on a train headed to Cheyenne, Wyoming. They start talking and find out they are both headed there to become mail order brides. They quickly become good friends. When they get on a stagecoach with three other young women, Katie becomes suspicious. What is going to happen to them? Or is it really possible that nothing untoward is happening?
Just As I AmEve and Evangeline Collins are adventurous twins who decide to take a risk and head west as mail order brides. Their parents are less than pleased, but do nothing to stop them. Eve and Eva don’t realize their danger until they stop just outside Cheyenne. Will they ever see their family again?
Blessed AssuranceAdelaide lost her parents a year before and now a rich man in town is making unwanted advances toward her. Desperate, she writes to two men and quickly accepts the one from Cheyenne, Wyoming. On the final leg of her journey, in a stagecoach with four other mail order brides, her suspicions are confirmed. Will she ever find a man she can truly trust?
CluesEach cover is hidden in a blog post on Faith's blog. Here are some clues to help you find the posts:
Clue #1: Agencies, mysteries, and westerns. Where might this cover be?
Clue #2: The ides of March. A holiday, a bird, or perhaps a plane. Can the cover be there?
Clue #3: A light or six and you may find the third and final cover.

On Wyslings and Paper Crowns by Mirriam Neal
The term 'wysling' was first coined (I believe) by Charles de Lint, in his novel 'The Riddle of the Wren.' I remember flipping through the book, and I couldn't understand why nobody else had adopted the term. We have orcs and wizards and elves and goblins, but no wyslings? That didn't seem fair. In my world, wyslings are very much like wizards, except they'll tell you that 'wizards' are fictional, please and thank you. There's no specific reason I latched onto the word except I fell in love with it. It sounds whimsical. It sounds magical. It sounds just a little irresponsible (apologies to Mr. De Lint).
My wyslings are eccentric people with fae blood and magical propensities. Ordinary humans can learn a magic trick or two, but thus far, only those with fae blood have any real magical abilities. While they tend to prefer living alone, they usually can't resist taking on an apprentice or two (most of them are helplessly vain).
Aside from heritage and frequent vanity, however, every wysling is different. Female, male, introverted, extroverted - it doesn't really matter. I tend to write about male wyslings because, well, they visit me more often than female wyslings, but that's only the author's prerogative. (I have a Paper novel planned featuring a female wysling, and I'm excited for it.)
Wyslings may be fae, but there are only a few factors that set them apart from others: their ability to perform wysary, and occasionally inhuman appearances. Most of my wyslings thus far could easily be mistaken for human beings, like many fae, but we'll meet some soon who definitely break that mold.
You'll meet two wyslings in Paper Crowns - Azrael and Asterope, although throughout the rest of the upcoming series you'll meet Rastaban, Eridanus, Ras Algethi Chow, Wilhllmina, Ambrose Vernon, and a plethora of others, all with their own personalities, abilities, and styles of wysary. I look forward to writing them, and I hope you look forward to meeting them!
"So why are you here? …The old conscience giving you a turn?""I haven't got one," he said, his voice slightly pressed-sounding because he didn't bother to raise his head before he spoke."A turn?""A conscience.""That must be awful," I retorted."Not really," he said.— Ginny and Azrael, Paper Crowns
Ginger has lived in seclusion, with only her aunt Malgarel and her blue cat, Halcyon, to keep her company. Her sheltered, idyllic life is turned upside-down when her home is attacked by messengers from the world of fae. Accompanied by Halcyon (who may or may not be more than just a cat), an irascible wysling named Azrael, and a loyal fire elemental named Salazar, Ginger ventures into the world of fae to bring a ruthless Queen to justice.

Building the Briznomian Culture - Espionage by Morgan Elizabeth Huneke
by Morgan Elizabeth Huneke
Worldbuilding is an essential part of fantasy writing. I’ll just admit it, worldbuilding is generally my least favorite part of writing. I get a random culture idea here and there, and that’s fun, but filling in all the gaps gets really tedious really quick. Briznom, however, was a little different.
I had a general idea of what Briznom was like before I started work on Espionage from previous versions of the country, but things changed drastically under Vannie’s story. Originally, Briznom was a pretty typical medieval fantasy monarchy. Ruled by King James, the country was populated with peasant villages.
I think I decided to change their government about the time I came up with the idea for Espionage. Honestly, Vannie was the catalyst for much of the worldbuilding. Briznom is divided into twelve vassalages: Wyland, Yoland, Maitland, Leland, Kirkland, Morland, Devland, Cumberland, Durland, Strickland, Stipland, and Roland. Each one is its own sort of district, ruled by a vassal lord. Each vassal lord can set some rules for his own vassalage, but his primary role is as a member of Court. The vassal lords meet regularly in the Capitol. They conduct business similarly to Congress, but on a much smaller scale, and since they don't have a bicameral legislature, legislation only has to pass through one vote. Not exactly the best for preventing bad bills, but that's how it goes. The king's role is far more similar to that of a president than that of a traditional king. He also presides over Court.
There are a few traditions that came with the political worldbuilding I did. One particular vassal lord tradition is infant betrothal. Because the title of vassal lord passes to the oldest son or the husband of the oldest daughter if there are no sons, they secure a match for said heir in early infancy. Both Vannie and Kyle, my two main characters, are caught by this. They’re still just kids, but infant betrothal already has potential to cause them major problems in the future.
The peasant villages stayed within the worldbuilding. I love villages almost as much as dungeons, so I had to keep them at the base of common society. How well off the villagers are depends on the vassal lord, as each one can control their own villagers however they want, so long as it is within national law. One thing that was added to the villages spur of the moment while writing is the emergency bell. In the center of every village, there is a bell to be rung to gather the villagers in case of emergency. It was a very useful addition.
Briznom is no more perfect than any other country. It has its good points, but it has other points that are rotten inside. Fixing those rotten points, well, that’s a job for the yet to be written (and yet to be plotted) sequel.
“Sir Roland has invited us to visit for the Autumn Feast.”
“Do we have to go, Papa? I couldn’t feast with the most crooked politician in all of Briznom.”
As the daughter of a Briznomian vassal lord, Vannie Cumberland has spent her childhood immersed in the world of politics. Relations between Briznom and the neighboring country of Calhortz are strained due to the tyrannical rule of the strytes. A proposed alliance could calm relations between the two countries, but would come at the cost of Briznom’s freedom.
When her father’s political archenemy invites them to the Autumn Feast, Vannie uncovers an evil scheme endangering the life of someone close to her. Personal enmity comes to a dangerous head as Vannie struggles to expose the corruption and stop the alliance. Time is running out.
Events are becoming too big for her to handle. Will Sir Roland’s son help or will things finally spiral out of control?

Character Spotlight
Kyle
Appearance: Dark hair and eyes, fair skin, thin, average height.
Age: 12
History: Kyle Roland is the only son of Sir Roland, vassal lord of Briznom, and heir to the vassalage. He was raised at Roland Castle primarily by servants, and rarely ventured anywhere else. His castle is at the seaside, and he always liked to watch the ocean from the tower. At age four, he was betrothed to an infant named Rosie. His father was always very particular about what he was taught academically, rendering him ignorant of the true workings of history and politics. However, Sir Roland had little influence over Kyle’s character, and so the servants were careful to teach him about God and how to be a proper gentleman.
Author’s Notes: Kyle is one of my favorites. (I know, I say that about a lot of my characters, but they’re all my babies.) For one thing, he’s a proper gentleman after the manner of Felix Walker. He’s a bit better developed than Felix, however. He also, according to a quiz, shares my personality type. He’s rather more levelheaded, though. Kyle was in the dream that inspired Espionage. Two things I remember about him in the dream are that he had dark hair and was really nice. I loved writing his role as the calm and collected side of the coin. Kyle and Vannie are really like two sides of the same coin. They work very well together. I love Kyle Roland, and I hope you will too.

Excerpt
“I think she’s in love with you.”
Kaden shot Trev a dark look in answer to his amused tone and grin. Though Jace tried, he couldn’t hold back his own amusement, even if it was at Kaden’s expense. He was just glad he wasn’t the one Tina had set her sights on. He wasn’t equipped to handle that awkward situation.
Kaden grumbled under his breath and sat down hard on his bed, where he flopped back against the pillow.
Aaron leaned casually against the door frame. “She’s quite a talker.”
Kaden scrubbed his hands over his face and released a low groan. “If I have to hide in this room the whole time we’re here, I’ll lose my mind.”
“Not as fast as you would out there.” Aaron gestured over his shoulder, earning a chorus of chuckles.
Grabbing the pillow, Kaden chucked it at him. “A lot of help you are.”
As Aaron bent down for it, Rayad returned to the room from meeting with Anne and Kyrin. The mood changed immediately, and Jace straightened. He needed to know about Kyrin. He hadn’t slept well last night, not knowing for sure if she was safe. How could he protect her if he couldn’t even be on the same floor as her?
