Savior, Like a Shepherd by Faith Blum

Have you ever wondered what it was like for orphans born in the Wild West? Faith Blum has a new book that explores the life of three orphans born during that time. She’s with us today to tell us a little about her book. Make sure you read to the end to see the super fun giveaway she has going on, too!
About the Book

The ground shook and a rumble sounded through the air as the train squealed to a stop. Maybe, just maybe, I could carry someone’s bags without the porter taking notice. And then there was the even bigger maybe: Maybe I could get enough money to at least buy a crust of bread for Trevor and Tabitha to share.I hid behind the boxes in the freight yard and kept one eye on the porter, and the other on the second class passenger car. The porter had his attention on the first class car, so I slipped into the gathering crowd.
Titus Hine has always taken care of others. First in protecting his brother and sister from the men his mother entertained. Even more so after her death, when the townspeople refused to help the orphans of a town prostitute. He’s been protector and provider, despite the hardships. He’s learned that no one will help, no one cares and if he wants to survive he’ll have to rely on his own strength not just for himself but his family as well.
Then a stranger shows him the kindness and help no one else seems willing to. Between her kindness and the lecture she gives the Christian Leaders, Titus’s life takes an unexpected turn for the better. With help and provision from the local believers things should be easier, his burdens are lifted. So why does it feel like life is spinning out of control?
Can Titus learn that while man may fail him there is One who will never fail? Can he learn to allow God to be the Shepherd of his life and lead him? Or will life continue to push him every which way?
Note: 50% of my income from this series will go to the World Orphans organization.

Inspiration and the Hymn ConnectionThis book was inspired by one short scene in Blessed Assurance when Miss Adelaide Brown meets a boy named Titus Hine and is moved to help him in the short time she will be in town. As I edited the novella, I came up with an idea. I had orphans in quite a few of my stories and more in an unpublished epilogue. Titus’ was the first I had a plot for and also the first in chronological order.
Going into the plotting, I knew a few things about Titus. 1. He was an orphan. 2. He had a brother and sister. 3. He was illegitimate. I plotted a few things out for the story, but most of it came as I went. I'm not really sure where some of the ideas came from, but others I know came from God.

As for the connection to the hymn, I wanted all of my books in this series to have the theme of God leading. Thanks to His leading as I wrote, the hymn, Savior, Like a Shepherd. For Titus’ story perfectly. Titus is truly led by the Shepherd in this book.

Orphans of the West Cover Reveal - All the Way by Faith Blum

My friend Faith Blum wanted to reveal the covers of her upcoming books and I was delighted to help.

About the Series
Genre: Christian Western Coming of AgeLogline: Through God’s leading, four orphans grow up to be important members of their communities.
The Orphans of the West series is a continuation of the stories of 4 orphans that were introduced in either a Hymns of the West novel or novella and goes through each orphans life.
Savior, Like a Shepherd is about Titus Hine who was introduced in Blessed Assurance (Hymns of the West Novellas #6) and how he must take care of his sister and brother as winter approaches, all while not being allowed to work anywhere.
All the Way is about Henry Salisbury, the only orphan in the series not directly introduced in a previous book, but it has other characters you will recognize from the books about the Brookings family.
He Hideth My Soulis also attached to the Brookings family and Otis Miller as Otis finds out that his grandfather left him a large inheritance and he can finally follow his dream.
He Leadeth Metakes up Gage Wilhelm’s story. Gage was introduced in I Love Thee (Hymns of the West Novellas #1) and tells how he is given the deed to his farm and told to go back to his farm. Gage gladly accepts only to have someone show up claiming his long-dead father owed another man a large sum of money and now there’s 10 years of interest added on.

I missed my own blog tour!

Hello from the sickie land of my house. My daughter sought to continue the family tradition of getting sick over the holidays. This year she brought home the flu and shared it with me. I made it though Christmas, but succumbed to the coughing, sniffling, and etc just in time for the new year. Which brings me to my blog post title...

So, here it the post that was supposed to appear on January 2, 2017. I am so thankful we have a God of second chances and grace.

We all like a reward, don't we? But, not all rewards are what they appear. That's the case in the latest installment of my Theodoric Saga. I created an intriguing Historical-like Christian Fantasy as I told the tale of Jayne and Liam. Find out more and be sure to check out the giveaway!

About the Book
She couldn’t hide forever.
A hard life taught Jayne to avoid men, powerful men most of all. When a new nobleman arrives to take over the vargar, she takes her family and hides. But the new baron seeks her out and makes her an offer she can’t refuse: protection. However, once they were sheltered behind the dark stone walls of the vargar, who would protect her from the new master?
His reward isn’t what it seems.
King Ireic of Anavrea charges Liam, a former bodyguard, with the task of retaking and taming a corner of the northern wilds. Upon arrival at Ashwyn Vargar, Liam finds challenges beyond his military experience. The keys to the vargar are missing and so are the field hands who should be harvesting the fields. Once he finds the keeper of the keys, she raises more questions than answers.

A Book Birthday Bash - Faith Blum

Who doesn’t like a birthday party? Faith certainly does. November 19th was the third birthday of her debut novel, A Mighty Fortress. To celebrate, she has all sorts of fun going on. First, she’s released a newly revised version of A Mighty Fortress. Second, she has most of her published books on sale. Third, she’s releasing the box set of all five of her novels for a special discounted price. And fourth, but not least, she now has the audiobook of her AMF available! Read on for more party fun.
About the Book
“Stay back!” Joshua ordered.  He kept his eyes on the scene below while waving his arm in Ruth's direction.  “Get deeper into the woods and stay down low to the ground.”Joshua hazarded a glance behind him.  He could no longer see Ruth and breathed a sigh of relief.  In one swift move, he grabbed his rifle and lay flat to the ground.  Extending the rifle, he aimed at the shorter man whose gun was pointed at Bradshaw.
Joshua and Ruth Brookings are traveling by stagecoach to finally join their parents in Montana. Attacked by murderous outlaws, the teens barely escape with their lives and must survive in the barren Wyoming and Montana territories and escape the man who's hunting them.
Seven years ago, Jed Stuart ran away from home and joined Tom's gang. Jed is tired of the lawlessness and wants out. The only problem? He is the boss's right-hand man and will never be able to leave. And what's one more stagecoach robbery, anyway?
Can Joshua lean on God's strength to keep himself and his sister alive until they find a town?   Will Jed be able to face his anger or will it consume him completely? All three are running--the hunter and hunted. What will happen when they meet?
Audiobook

Faith is excited to announce that she partnered with Michael Stanton to produce an audiobook version of her book. We’re not sure exactly when it will be available, but if you sign up for her New Releases newsletter, you will get an email with the announcement.

Hymn Themes in Stories
Part of my brand as an author is that all the titles of my books are also hymn titles. This all started with my first published book, A Mighty Fortress. When trying to figure out the title for my book, I noticed that the hymn A Mighty Fortress was woven into the story many times as was the theme of the hymn. After that, I started looking for hymns that would work for each story. Often times, I had the title and hymn picked out before I had the story written or figured out. There were exceptions to this, of course.
As for how I wove the theme of the hymn into the story, it was sometimes hard to do, but most of the time, I did it unintentionally. When working with a theme in a story, unintentional weaving in is the best thing to do. I could never have done it without God’s help.

During the times the theme didn’t naturally come through, I would read through the story and look for places I could add it in without interrupting the flow of the scene or messing up the story. It can be challenging, but with God’s help, it can be done easily and well.
About the Author

Faith Blum started writing at an early age. She started even before she could read! She even thought she could write better than Dr. Seuss. (The picture doesn’t show it well, but there are scribblings on the page of Green Eggs and Ham). Now that she has grown up a little more, she knows she will probably never reach the success of Dr. Seuss, but that doesn’t stop her from trying. When she isn’t writing, Faith enjoys doing many right-brained activities such as reading, crafting, playing piano, and playing games with her family. One of her dreams is to visit Castle City, Montana, someday to see the ghost town she chose for her characters to live in. She currently lives on a hobby farm with her family in Wisconsin. There are many ways to connect with Faith online. All of them can be found in one convenient place: http://FaithBlum.com. On her website you can find links to her various social media sites and both of her blogs.

Reversal Zone by J. Grace Pennington

J. Grace Pennington has published four science fiction novels. They each have a unique bent to them, but this one is very different. Each book is a standalone, but as with any series, you get more of the story if you read them all in order. In Reversal Zone, the main character, Andi Lloyd, becomes the only one who can save the ship and crew. Can she do it in time?
About the Book Nothing is as it should be.
After weeks of boredom, Andi is excited when the Surveyor is called upon to rescue a freighter that mysteriously vanished in uncharted space.  Excitement quickly turns to unease when the ship encounters an unknown phenomenon—a cloud that appears not to exist.  But with the freighter's crew in danger, the Surveyorhas no choice but to venture into unknown territory.
As soon as they enter the cloud, its unstable effects wreak havoc on the ship.  They're flying blind.  Every piece of equipment is malfunctioning.  And every member of the crew is unable to think straight or act like themselves—except Andi.
Now she's expected to guide them through the predicament with no previous command experience and no one to turn to for support.  And with each passing hour, it becomes clear that if they don't escape the cloud soon—they won't escape it at all.

Excerpt“Four degrees starboard.” Crash pointed, leaning over August's shoulder and peering at the navigation display.            I sat in the visitor's chair on the port side of the bridge, watching as everyone went about their business.  Once I'd helped Olive, the nurse, finish unloading the new medical supplies, there was nothing to do in sickbay other than refill a few prescriptions, which the Doctor liked to do himself.  Thus Olive had gone to find her husband, our first engineer, and I had headed to the bridge.             I couldn't remember the last time things had been so uneventful.            Uneventful for the Doctor and Olive and I, anyway.  Things did not appear uneventful for the Captain and Guilders.            The Captain sat ramrod straight in his chair on the little platform in the command pit, glowering at Crash.  Crash ignored him, remaining draped over the back of August's chair.            Normally the bridge was one of my favorite places to be, second only to sickbay.  I loved the open space to the front and both sides, the view of the stars as they sped past, even the sober gray-blue color of the walls.  I loved seeing how smoothly things ran, like the workings of the most intricate electronic device, and I loved the disciplined aura of the bridge team working together to get everything done.            But today, it was different.  The color was the same, and of course the stars hadn't changed much.  The atmosphere, however, had something added to it, and that something was Crash.  The room even felt smaller, as though it couldn't contain two big personalities at once.            “When I left, they were still in Delta thirty-five-sixty-seven,” Crash explained, straightening up and facing the Captain.  “That's as far as I can guide you for sure.  Pretty soon after that they disappeared from the scopes.”            The Captain frowned and leaned forward.  “I'm still not clear as to why you left them.”            Crash paced away from August, whose face relaxed slightly.            I bit my lip.  No matter how much I'd missed Crash, it was never long before he began to irritate me.            “I told you.  DeMille hired me to guide the Pigeon through some of the uncharted sectors to the rendezvous.  But Captain Dooley is just a little too set in his ways, and didn't ever listen to me, even though DeMille said he had to.”            “That doesn't surprise me,” Guilders said.            I shifted in my chair, trying to quell the restlessness.            “I saw I was doing no good, and Dooley obviously didn't like having me there, so I left.  They were getting into territory even I hadn't explored, anyway.”  Placing his hands on his hips and standing with legs apart, he faced the Captain.  “Don't know if you know Dooley.  A very... possibly the most serious and emotionless man I have ever met.  Not a hint of fun or romance.”  He wrinkled his face.            The Captain sighed.  “No, I don't know him.”            “But he sounds like an entirely satisfactory person to me,” Guilders said without the slightest change of expression.            I couldn't stop an amused snort, and Crash looked over his shoulder at the first officer.  “What was that?”            “Nothing, sir,” said Guilders.  For a moment, I thought the “sir” carried a hint of sarcasm, but his face remained unchanged.            “Mr. Crash,” the Captain questioned, “do you have any idea at all what could have happened to the Pigeon?”            “No idea whatsoever.”            The Captain cupped his clean-shaven chin in his hand and frowned.  “This doesn't add up.  A ship doesn't just... disappear.”
“Well, this one did.”Guest Post by the AuthorI have a confession to make.  I love movies.  I love the craftsmanship that goes into making a truly excellent piece of cinema.  I'm a serious film buff who will lean over and whisper behind-the-scenes trivia to my boyfriend every time we watch something together.  I inhale making-of featurettes.  I don't just have a top ten favorites list, I have a top fifty.
But that's not the confession.  The confession is that lately, I actually like television shows more than I like feature films.
It may be partly because I'm busier, which makes it much easier to find time to watch something twenty or forty minutes long than squeeze in a full two hours.  But it's also because you can form a much stronger bond with the characters than you can in a single movie.  I love stories for many reasons, but first and foremost I love them for their characters.
Granted, you can get to know people much better in a book than in a movie, because you can delve into their inner thoughts and feelings in a way a visual depiction never can.  But still, nothing can beat getting to know someone over the course of many stories, seeing them act and react over a large span of time, watching them grow and advance in the world in more time than can fit into a single book.  In essence, a series is the TV show of the literary world.
And since I've watched a lot of TV shows, I've been able to identify a couple of pitfalls to try to avoid in my series.
1-Jumping the Shark
Okay, so I'm not the only one who has identified this.  The term was coined after an episode of Happy Days where the writers, having run out of better ideas, had their character Fonzie water ski over a shark.  It's basically any point in a series where something ridiculous is inserted because the story has run out of steam and the storytellers just throw something in that doesn't fit in order to keep their audience interested.  Even the best series can fall prey to this—one of my all-time favorite shows, Friends, started to lose traction several seasons in and incorporated an ill-fated romantic attraction between two of the characters that eventually fizzled out without really adding anything to the overall arc of the series.  While the actors were able to pull it off enough that it wasn't a complete disaster, it was disappointing to many of the fans.
The core problem?  These series went so long they ran out of things to do.  The amount of interesting things for a set of characters to do is not infinite.  And attempts to prolong a series past its natural “expiration date” often leads to shark-jumping that shatters the suspension of disbelief and bores the audience.  The solution?  Planning.  Plan out exactly what the series is going to look like, from start to finish.  Craft an entire, complex story that contains only what it needs to.  You can't run out of ideas if all the ideas are already there from the beginning.
I did this early on for my Firmament series—I planned out all the books before I even wrote the first one.  That doesn't mean I'm not willing to change the plan if I need to.  As I learn more about writing, I tweak it.  But I'm not going to just keep going aimlessly just for the sake of continuing it.  If anything, over time I've condensed it.  The series went from twenty-four books to eighteen, but it still begins and ends the same way with the same basic plot points in between.
2-The Customer is Always Right
This may be true in retail, but it's not the case in storytelling.  Audiences and readers may think they know what they want, but they don't.  They may clamor for their favorite character to be saved from death, or for their favorite pair to become romantically involved, or for a series to continue past its end date.  But while authors may not be perfect, they are the gods of their own stories.  Nobody knows the characters like they do.  No one else has spent the amount of time and effort on the stories that they have.
One of the most famous examples of this is Sherlock Holmes.  After years of fame, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had grown weary of writing his famous detective and decided to kill him off so he could move on to other things.  As a diehard Holmsian, I certainly wouldn't love this decision, but Doyle's cave to the public's pressure didn't produce the best results.  He resurrected Holmes in body, but most of the stories penned after that are missing a great deal of Holmes's spirit.  It would probably have been just as well for him to have left it alone and moved on to the things that his heart was truly in.
A more recent and more frustrating example is the television show Once Upon a Time.  Originally a brilliant, charming premise involving fairytale characters cursed to live in our world, over five seasons it has gone far beyond jumping the shark—it has jumped whole oceans in its absurd attempts to revive the spark that once made it such a great series.  But the last straw came when the writers, pressured by certain factions of their fanbase, added an LBGT storyline in one of their recent episodes.  Unfortunately, it did them no favors because it had nothing to do with the larger series arc.  It was clumsily inserted to appease the clamoring public, but at the end of the day it didn't even do that.  The conservative viewers weren't happy, for obvious reasons.  The LBGT viewers weren't happy, because it wasn't handled in a way that respected their community.  And the neutral viewers weren't happy because it distracted from the story in a completely unnecessary way.
The solution?  Once you make your plan, stick to it.  Not at the exclusion of truly superior ideas, but don't change your series plan simply because of pressure or fear of the reaction if you don't.  For my series, I do accept feedback from other writers, people whose ideas about story I trust and respect.  But there are some things I have planned for future books that I know certain people won't like.  Does that make me cringe a little bit inside?  Yep.  But I wouldn't have planned it if I didn't believe it was best for the story, so I'm sticking to it.

This book is the fourth in the series.  The first was published four years ago, in 2012.  I'm not getting them out as quickly as I'd hoped, but I know I'm doing the best I can and so I try to be content with that.  I try to follow my imagination where it wants to go, within the bounds of the principles of good writing and the parameters I've set for this set of eighteen stories.  In the end, I hope that it isn't truly eighteen different stories.  I hope that it's one, grand overarching story about a young woman who comes of age in a time when the firmament of space is just a simple shuttle ride away.About the Author

Franky A. Brown started writing her Jane Austen retellings in May 2015. She started with Pride and Butterflies , then None But You . Now she's published Emma's Match a retelling of Emma by Jane Austen. In Franky's retelling, Emma is a designer who's business is struggling, but she's never failed at anything and she doesn't plan to fail here either. Can she walk the line between friendship and love or will she lose the only man she has ever loved?

About the Book Emma Wallace has a plan up her sleeve to save her struggling design business, but not a clue what do to about the man who has her heart.
Stealing a kiss from Will Knight years ago ended in an embarrassment she didn’t want to repeat. But when a popular new designer in town starts taking her clients and has eyes on Will, too, Emma decides it’s time to fight for what she wants. The perfectly irritating designer she wants to shove into a hole isn’t the only one who can be down-to-earth and likeable. After all, Emma’s never failed at anything...except walking the line between friendship and love. Crossing it again could mean losing Will’s friendship for good.

About the Author Franky A. Brown has always called the South home and loves to write about it. She holds an English degree from the University of South Carolina and can’t seem to stop reading. She is the author of women’s fiction and chick lit about life, love, and Southern women.
ExcerptWith a sigh, I take a notepad and pen from my purse and scribble on the paper for a moment.
How does one compete with the woman who can do everything and warms everyone’s hearts in the process? People are lining up for her design services, not mine.
I don’t make homemade crafts out of used goods, or know how to shoot a gun, or make my own curtains…
Of course, I’m also not desperate enough to follow Will wherever he goes. Nevertheless, it may be time to make some change in my life.
I scribble out my list of goals.
1.      Learn PowerPoint and how to make a killer client presentation with it. 2.      Buy jeans. Wear them for at least twelve hours. Around other people.3.      Learn how to shoot a gun. And don’t freak out.4.      Visit a dollar store.5.      Take a sewing class. Maybe learn how to make curtains?6.      Go camping. For real.
Maybe these things would help me gain some useful perspective. Trying new things is definitely something my mother never did.
Interview with Will Knight1. What do you like about Emma?

Some people who don't know her very well see her as snobbish and spoiled. No one is perfect, and she does have her flaws, but Emma is my best friend, we have a lot of great memories together growing up. She has a big heart and is close with her family. She takes care of her father and is a favorite with her nieces. Plus, she's funny, strong, and independent. She never had to work, since she had a large inheritance from her father, but she wanted to build her own business and is determined to make it a success.

2. What makes Emma a good designer?

Emma is a very talented designer. She's creative with her renovations and can see a dilapidated house and envision the possibilities. All I could see was a disaster, and she turned it into showroom. She's got a way with colors I'll never have.

3.  Which one of Emma's flaws annoys you the most?

What absolutely drives me crazy is how she gets into everyone's business. She's convinced she knows who is right for her single friends. She won't stay out of it and is obsessed with matchmaking.

4. How has your friendship with Emma changed over the years?

Emma and I have known each other so long, it's hard to pinpoint when it started. My little brother was always enchanted by Emma's sister, Olivia, and the four of us were always hanging out together. Being seven years older than Emma, she was like a little sister to me. We had an easy, comfortable family-like relationship until one Christmas party at her father's house when she was 17. She grabbed me where I stood, not realizing there was mistletoe above my head, and kissed me rather passionately.  Being 24 at the time, I was shocked by two things: the fact that she kissed me like that and the fact that it didn't feel like kissing my sister at all. Before my feelings could run away with me, I pushed her away and reminded her that she was only 17. Things were awkward after that, to say the least. I left for grad school after that and we didn't speak for 2 years. It was during this time apart I realized how much I enjoyed talking with her and I would think of her every time I heard a song on the radio from a concert we all went to. My brother married her sister and there was no way to avoid each other forever, despite the discomfort, so we worked through it and became friends again. I did my best to help advise her on the new design business she started and eventually she moved out of her father's house and into my condo building. Since we're down the hall from each other, we watch a lot of movies together and chat about our careers. She tells me about the latest fashions in the design world and I tell her about my days as a financial advisor. I'm sure we bore each other equally, but we usually agree on a good movie to watch and an excellent snack. What gets harder all the time is listening to her talk about how she's given up on dating and never wants to get  married. And while I admire her independent spirit and don't relish the thought of another man stepping into the picture...it hurts to realize she no longer wants to be more than friends, and to realize I do. Our friendship  isn't something either of us want to lose.

5. What do you like about where you are in life?

I live a comfortable life as a successful financial advisor. I love my work and the people I associate with.

6. What would you change about your life?

Though it's a happy life, there are days I wish a certain woman would share it with me. More than just the friend who lives a few doors down.

7. Where do you see yourself in five years?

In 5 years, I see my business growing, my investments taking off...and maybe I could even let go of Emma long enough to be interested in a woman who is interested in me.Giveaway

Excerpt
Mr. Reese looked him over. “I’ll be right back.”Mr. Harris and Mr. Connor looked at each other. He was gone for two minutes before he came back with a piece of paper in his hand. After Mr. Reese settled into his chair, he spoke, “Do you mind answering a few questions, Bradley?”Bradley shrugged. “I guess not.”“Good. Are you a born-again Christian?”Bradley blinked once. “Yes.”“What do you mean by that phrase?” Mr. Reese asked.Bradley shifted in his chair. Where was he going with this? “It means that I surrendered my life to God so that I could be born of His Holy Spirit through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.”Mr. Reese smiled slightly. “Thank you. How far are you willing to go to earn someone’s trust?”“If I really care for that person, I’m willing to do whatever is necessary.”“As a Christian, aren’t you supposed to care for everyone?”Bradley took a deep breath and smiled. “Yes. So I should be willing to do that for everyone, too. Although, I don’t do it as much as I ought.”Mr. Reese chuckled. “Who do you love more than anything else?”“God.”“If you were to marry, would that change?”“I hope and pray not. If it does, I pray someone points it out to me.”Mr. Reese stared at him for a few minutes. “How old are you?”Bradley started. “What?”Mr. Reese raised his eyebrows. “Do you have a problem with the question?”Bradley cleared his throat. “I just wasn’t expecting it. I’m twenty-six.” Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Adelaide lean against the doorframe.Mr. Reese leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “When you enter a courtship, are you willing to court the young lady for at least six months before you ask her to marry you? Assuming of course that the courtship lasts longer than a month to begin with.”“What are you doing?” Adelaide asked.“Let him answer the question and then I’ll answer yours.”Bradley pondered the question. With closed eyes, he said, “If—and that’s a big if—I were ever to court a woman, I would take my time. I haven’t ever thought of an exact period of time since I never planned to marry, let alone court a woman, but if she is most comfortable with at least six months, I will respect her wishes.”Giveaway

Faith’s sister, Naomi, graciously hand painted two beautiful bookmarks for this giveaway. There will be one lucky winner. The bookmarks are made with Adelaide in mind. Aren’t they gorgeous?

ExcerptThe intensity of Mother Blue’s gaze made him fidget.“I’m so sorry for whatever I’ve done to upset you,” Jimmy said. “I was trying to protect Elle and help her mother find JJ! I never meant to cause anyone any trouble. Elle’s mom asked me to bring her back and that’s what I was trying to do.”“You caused all this trouble because someone else’s mother told you to?”“It wasn’t just that. Elle helped me out last year and I wanted to do something nice for her. Back then everyone hated me.”“Why did they hate you, Jimmy?”“I was pretty mean. I guess you could say I was a bully. I was hurting inside so bad because my brother hit me at home and stuff. I think I wanted to make other people know how it felt. I’m really sorry now, and I’m trying to make up for it.”“Can you tell me what you learned from all that?”Jimmy pulled on his earlobe and shuffled his feet from side to side. “I learned it’s much more fun to be friends with people and to help them than it is to be an—” He caught himself before he used one of his brother’s curse words. “A whatever.”“Jimmy, you have a kind heart, and I know you only did what you felt you had to in order to protect your friend. That is an important quality in a human being. But there are rules, and Elle broke one by bringing you here. There could have been serious consequences.”“I promise I’ll follow the rules as soon as I figure out what they are. Are you the queen here or something? Everyone bows when they see you.” Jimmy watched as a light breeze gently lifted the dark curls that reached below her knees.“I’m the leader of the Fiorins who help protect Earth’s children. I wore a blue dress in some pictures painted of me from long ago, and the Fiorins began to refer to me as Mother Blue.”***
“Are you an angel?”“What an interesting question. We operate much like you visualize a guardian angel would. Fiori is a dimension in time and space which operates parallel to your own universe. From the beginning of time, we have traveled to your world through reflective portals to protect and love human children.”“What’s a reflective portal?”Jimmy and Tyler nibbled on butter biscuits while Mother Blue described travel through the portals, as well as wish travel. When guides wished themselves someplace, she explained, it had to be to a location, not to a person. Elle had forgotten about location, and her mistake in wishing herself to Amadeus landed them in the middle of the fight with the Zorin. He wouldn’t have believed any of this if he weren’t standing right here in this huge castle. He shook his head, hoping he’d wake up if it was all a dream.“So that’s how I got here? Elle wished me through the reflection in the tack box?”“Yes. Before today, the only humans who ever entered Fiori were guides. I’m rather at a loss as to how to handle this mix-up, but the key to our continued success is that no one in your world is aware we exist except our chosen guides and children under eight. Our survival and ability to protect children depends upon that security.”“I promise I won’t tell anyone.” Jimmy shuddered at the thought that he might never again be allowed to go back home. He certainly didn’t want to live in Fiori for the rest of his life. It was nice, but he’d miss his friends too much. Heck, he’d even miss his obnoxious bully of a brother and the parents who referred to him as an accident. They were mean, but he still loved all of them and hoped they would learn to be a happy family one day.“Please don’t make me stay here.” Tears filled Jimmy’s eyes and he swiped at them with the back of his hand, embarrassed that he’d shown weakness.“We would never do that. You are free to return to your home anytime you wish. I have the power to make you forget what you have seen and learned here—but I think I have a better idea. Bernstein, what are your thoughts?”
“Mother, I have been closer to Jimmy than anyone,” Bernstein said. “He’s a good child. He was tested, and he did falter, but he’s found his heart again. He’s proven he’s brave and good. With some direction, I believe he will do his best to help others.”

The Dragons of Alsace Farm by Laurie Lewis

Everyone has their secrets and Tayte, Agnes, and Noah are no exception. In Agnes’s home, though, those secrets—or dragons—might just tear them all apart. Part of the Kindle Scout competition, The Dragons of Alsace Farm, was hot and trending for four weeks before its launch. Find out why during this blog tour!About the Book

In need of his own redemption, Noah Carter finally confronts his childhood hero, the once-beloved uncle who betrayed him. Instead of vengeance, he offers forgiveness, also granting Uncle John a most curious request—for Noah to work on the ramshackle farm of Agnes Deveraux Keller, a French WWII survivor with dementia.
Despite all Agnes has lost, she still has much to teach Noah. But the pair’s unique friendship is threatened when Tayte, Agnes’s estranged granddaughter, arrives to claim a woman whose circumstances and abilities are far different from those of the grandmother she once knew.
Items hidden in Agnes’s attic raise painful questions about Tayte’s dead parents, steeling Tayte’s determination to save Agnes, even if it requires her to betray the very woman she came to save, and the secret her proud grandmother has guarded for seventy years.
The issue strains the fragile trust between Tayte and Noah, who now realizes Tayte is fighting her own secrets, her own dragons. Weighed down by past guilt and failures, he feels ill-equipped to help either woman, until he remembers Agnes’s lessons about courage and love. In order to save Agnes, the student must now become the teacher, helping Tayte heal—for Agnes’s sake, and for his.

ExcerptAgnes’s face softened into a palette of sorrow. “Angeline’s dead. My baby girl is dead.”
Tayte felt Tyler’s arm tighten around her shoulder. It was all too much to take in, and she surrendered to the hurt, releasing silent tears. “I know. I’m sad too.”
A gentle, wrinkled hand reached up to wipe Tayte’s tears. “There, there,” said Agnes, opening her arms wide, offering comfort to the crying girl.
Tayte left Tyler’s side and stepped into that waiting embrace. Gone were the smells of fresh bread and jam. The essence of familiar French cologne Agnes had undoubtedly dabbed on at the mention of company was marred by traces of some foul scent that lingered in her clothes. Tayte pulled back momentarily, but unable and unwilling to resist the offer to be loved, she laid her head on her grandmother’s shoulder and hugged her right back.
She hadn’t even realized how deeply she ached to experience the osmosis of love exchanged when maternal arms wrapped around her, but now that she was within that circle, she felt comfort and love soak into her, filling the void and renewing parts of her that had felt stone cold. Her aversion to dirt and to her grandmother’s tainted scent dissipated the longer they embraced, dispelled by the logic that with enough soap and water, all could be made right.
Tayte didn’t want the moment to end, but when Agnes pushed her back and framed her face in work-worn hands, those aged eyes gazed into Tayte’s with so much love that her young heart burned more fiercely.
“Oh, my sweet girl. Do not cry. I am very happy to meet you. I am Agnes Devereaux Keller. Now, who might you be, and tell me, what has made you so sad, ma chérie?
