I was born in the northern midwest to a missionary pastor and his wife. As the oldest of four, I learned to be mature and responsible at an early age. That, however, did not prevent me from having constant flights of fancy. In my early teens, those flights of fancy began to make it to the page. I have always loved reading and constantly had my nose in a book growing up (fuel for those fanciful flights). It seemed only natural to start putting my adventures into words to share.

I love to read, discuss, and listen to comments on a wide variety of topics, both fiction and non-fiction. I look forward to interacting with others on this site. :)

Although they are technically fantasy, you won't find magic and wizards between the covers. I aim to write novels that feel like historical fiction, not fantasy. All of that said, I am delighted you have found me and would love to hear what you think of my books now that you have found them.(less)

The next novel is in the planning stage and I hope to write two more after that. I am just now finishing up a companion anthology which should be out later this year. I haven't expanded Jacobi's character, but I will definitely consider it now that you have mentioned him. :) He is a fun character.(less)

More books by Rachel Rossano…
Having just finished up the rough draft of Mercy, the third novel in the Novels of Rhynan series, I am now plotting the fourth novel. Tentatively titled Courage, this one is going to feature a lot of old favorite characters, but the chief of them, is my hero, Darnay. Readers have glimpsed him growing up as the series has gone on. So, here are some glimpses of what we have already seen.

My hero,... Read more of this blog post »

The Reward: Liam's Story (Romance)
3 chapters — updated Mar 29, 2010 04:35PM
Description: I started this story because I wanted to explore a different set of characters than my typical hero and heroine. I wanted to try writing an outspoken, stubborn, strong female and a more laid back, quiet, unassertive male pairing. I also wanted to try writing a story that centered on a place (a castle and town) instead of my usual journey stories. Liam's story was the result. I am eager to hear what you think of it. I will try to post a new chapter once a week for you to read and comment on.
The Crown of Anavrea (Romance)
1 chapters — updated Mar 29, 2010 04:34PM
Description: This is an excerpt from the first part of The Crown of Anavrea. This tale began when I was bored out of my mind on a four week trip to Germany. I had read every English book I could get my hands on (horror, suspense, and mystery tales, not my favorites) and I was quickly getting tired of the little English television I could find (MTV and Sky News). My current novel in process was not going well. So, as frequently happens, I began a new tale. I wanted to write something light, romantic, and fun. I ended up with a set of characters that I could not let go. I have since written four novels in which these characters or their relations have been central to the story. I hope you love them as much as I do. Enjoy!
The Mercenary's Marriage (Romance)
1 chapters — updated Mar 29, 2010 04:34PM
Description: This is an excerpt from the first part of The Mercenary's Marriage. In it, I introduce Darius, the main character. He sprung from my head like Athena from the head of Zeus, fully formed and ready for battle. His story was one of the quickest to pour forth onto the page. I wrote in about nine months, I think. I hope you enjoy. The complete book is available if you find you can't wait to read more. :)

Only Children Chase Sawdust by Willowy Whisper
“Jacob, what's wrong with you? Why would you want to do this? What kind of husband . . . what kind of man are you?”
“I don't know.” Jacob's voice was a whisper. “But before I pledged myself to Annie, I pledged myself to God.”
“I hope you know what you're doing.” Montrose glanced back towards the kitchen. In their silence, they heard Annie's low sobs. “I hope it's worth it.”

“In the land of Ingary where such things as seven-league boots and cloaks of invisibility really exist, it is quite a misfortune to be born the eldest of the three. Everyone knows you are the one who will fail first, and worst, if the three of you set out to seek your fortunes.”
Diana Wynne Jones, Howl's Moving Castle

“This book will prove the following ten facts:
1. A Goon is a being who melts into the foreground and sticks there.
2. Pigs have wings, making them hard to catch.
3. All power corrupts, but we need electricity.
4. When an irresistible force meets an immovable object, the result is a family fight.
5. Music does not always sooth the troubled beast.
6. An Englishman's home is his castle.
7. The female of the species is more deadly than the male.
8. One black eye deserves another.
9. Space is the final frontier, and so is the sewage farm.
10. It pays to increase your word power.”
Diana Wynne Jones, Archer's Goon

“Go to bed, you fool," Calcifer said sleepily. "You're drunk."
"Who, me?" said Howl. "I assure you, my friends, I am cone sold stober." He got up and stalked upstairs, feeling for the wall as if he thought it might escape him unless he kept in touch with it. His bedroom door did escape him.”
Diana Wynne Jones, Howl's Moving Castle

“It was only when Shona, in sheer fury, turned the carnivorous sheep among them that they moved. They ran, some of them with charming little white sheep attached to their legs or backsides and the rest shouting about monsters.”
Diana Wynne Jones, Dark Lord of Derkholm

“He picked up the skull and knocked an onion ring out of its eye socket.
"I see Sophie has been busy again. Couldn't you have restrained her, my friend?" The skull yattered its teeth at him. Howl put it down rather hastily.”

Cool! :)

Rachel I love Moriah's name too! :) Thankfully we get to know her a bit better in the sequel. I am trying to get a couple of scenes with her in it. She is an interesting woman. One has to be to be married to Aiden (Rathenridge) after all. ;)

You liked Dentin so you will probably be glad to hear that he is the main character for the next book in the series. :) Tomas, Brielle, and Landry have all make appearances and I am not even halfway through yet. I am discovering that I really love writing sequels. :)

message 13: by Rachel

Rachel I love the name Brianna too. :) Brielle was named by a reader and the name has definitely grown on me. Wren's name sort of inspired her. When I thought of the name I though of a small woman with brown hair and an unassuming appearance with unusual character. Her eyes are her only truly remarkable physical feature, but they give insight into what she is truly feeling, as Tourth learned. ;)

Who is your favorite male character of the two books?

message 12: by Rachel

Rachel LOL!!! I can just imagine the chaos I have created inadvertently. I love that you enjoyed the book and Wren's character so much. :)

message 11: by Rachel

Rachel Me too. When I was writing her, I kept thinking how much I would love to have her confidence and ability to read people and situations. Oh, and having her set of skills with knives and weapons would be neat too. ;)

Katie So what have you been reading lately?

message 3: by Katie

Katie Yeah, not too helpful there. ;-) The only book of hers I've read was Howl's Moving Castle and I really enjoyed it so I'd like to check out some of her other books. I guess I'll see if they have Archer's Goon at the Library.

Rachel Um... That is a hard question. :) Archer's Goon, Howl's Moving Castle, and all of the Chrestomancy books are all great. Homeward Bounders was one of the first books of hers that I read. The Dark Lord of Derkholm and The Year of the Griffin are also great. I know I am probably not helping you here. :) Sorry, there are too many good books to choose from.
