Chapter One
“Of course, dove. You are my everything. Without you there is no meaning.” Edward performed his lines with the perfection of a seasoned actor. He gripped the supple cheeks of the vixen straddling him. She bit her lower lip, an amazing actress by her own right, as her bright blue eyes burned. They both knew the parts they needed to play.
“What if my husband finds out?” she whispered as if their love had robbed her of enough air to speak at a normal level.
Edward let his hands slide up her torso where he held a breast in each palm. His cock hardened at the dessert that was to come. He’d sampled this treat before and knew it was worth the theatricality required to taste it. “Let him find out,” Edward hissed, his lips vibrated against her neck. “Let the world find out!”
She wailed in longing, their scene had reached its climax and now it was time for Edward to reach his. His cock celebrated its near victory. His hands joined the party as he lifted the sultry siren up enough to delve into her silky folds.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
Someone knocked urgently at his door. Edward turned his head from the sound and lifted his hips. The woman froze, wide eyes transfixed on the very door Edward was happy to ignore.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
“Piss off!”
The woman shrieked. “What if it’s my husband?”
Moments from glory, Edward clucked his tongue and shook his head softly. “No, no,” he placed a soothing hand on her cheek. “I’m sure it is nothing import—”
“Urgent message from the King!” came the voice from the other side of the door.
“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph,” Edward bit the words out, sliding from beneath the beautiful, blonde filly. He watched her slide back and out of sight before yanking the door open, not bothering to cover himself. “What is it?”
A young, very serious looking messenger glanced once at the parchment he held before speaking at a volume loud enough for the entire castle to hear. “The King requests your discreet presence at a secret—”
“Excuse me,” Edward interrupted the messenger, leaning one arm up and against the doorway, “if it is a secret, should you be screaming?”
The messenger remained, his mouth wide open, his forehead crinkling as if he was pondering life’s greatest questions. Edward looked past the goldfish and spied a smirking figure lurking in the shadows on the other side of the path.
“I am quite busy,” Edward said to the figure in the shadows.
Caldwell leaned forward and crossed his arms. “Not anymore.”
Author Interview
What prompted you to write Protected by the Knight?
Protected by the Knight is actually the third book in my Loving the Knight series. Each book before was written to be enjoyed as a stand-alone, however there are repeat, or cameo, characters. That being said, Edward appeared first in the second book of the series, Possessed by the Knight as the hero’s brother. Edward was such a fun, sexy character to write, I was immediately intrigued about who he would end up with, what his sexy story was. I was able to discover that with Protected by the Knight and have to say (though I am biased) that he couldn’t have ended up with anyone better.
At the pub, what is your drink of choice?
I’ll try it all (is that really a good thing when talking about liquor?). I like a frosty pint on a cold day and a fruity martini when I am feeling fancy. However, my true passion is in the themed get-together and matching cocktail. I can make a theme out of anything. Having nachos on a boring Tuesday? Why not pair it with margaritas and watch fun, silly movies like Machete or Once Upon a Time in Mexico?
Would you let your mom read your books?
I want to be cool and grownup and say of course I would, we are all adults here. But she is my mom and what if she liked them? This is all a little moot considering it was her romance novels that got me hooked in the first place, but I think my young brain simply blocked that detail, call it self-preservation.
Any kink you’d feel uncomfortable writing?
I am not exactly sure how to answer this one. There are kinks that I personally do not at all see the attraction to and it would be difficult to write them. I have to at least be able to turn my head, squint, and think, yeah that could be hot to write something with any measure of success. But then, there could be something that I don’t even fine squint-level sexy right now, but a different beam of light could hit it and change everything.
What do you find most attractive in a man that you may not like in real life?
As a writer of alphas I can answer this one quickly. I would love that worshipping, constantly cared for and protected type of man…for a while. I could see it getting old but then I could just misbehave and he’d show me what happens to naughty girls and…what was the question?

Running both hands through his hair, he looked down at his shoes. “Partially, I guess. Ya, I’ve screwed other girls. I didn’t think I had a hope in hell of winding up with you. After I figured out there might be a chance, I haven’t been with another woman. I want it to be right. I want us to be shiny and bright like that bracelet is now, not like it’s going to be when it tarnishes.”
Her bare feet shuffled closer to him and Munk found his head pillowed against her chest. “I’m so sorry, love. I didn’t understand. We’ll do it your way. I don’t want you to ever feel that way again.”
Without thinking about it, his arms went around her. “What way?” he whispered.
“Like you don’t matter. Like you’re not good enough.” Long, delicate fingers combed through his hair. The scent of her rose into his nostrils and he was almost in heaven. “You are a good man and I love you, Munro Lowell Riley. I love everything about you. But, can we at least get married as soon as this miserable job is over? Please?”
Pulling slightly backward, he looked up to find her face turned toward him. “If you get out of this dive. If we go to Palmer on your day off, we can get the damn license and swear to God, the day after I’m away from here we can get married. You can stay in the cabin and set the whole thing up. Have it at the Great grans’ place. I don’t care who you invite, but the minute the ceremony is over, we’re gone.”
“But how are we going to get out of here? You don’t have your truck, do you?”
“I’ll get us out of here. Let me handle that. How about you tell me what brought this sex thing on? We’ve never had this come up before.”
Della held his head in both hands and kissed him sweetly on the lips, then the forehead, before tugging him against her chest. “I had a dream. I had to go take a shower after it was over.”
Breaking away from her, he stood and pushed her hair behind her ears. “You mean like a wet dream. You got hot for me?”
Cheeks flooding with color, Della nodded. “Yes. And I got tired of being everybody’s good little girl. I asked Sandy about it and she told me guys like blowjobs.”
The color in her cheeks deepened. “She said I was asking the wrong person ’cause she’s into girls. And Sandy said I was a hottie.”
“She didn’t do anything, did she?”
“No. She said she wasn’t a cheat and she has a partner at home. But she said a threesome might be fun.”
The look on Della’s face was so serious, Munk had a hard time holding in a laugh. “Okay, as long as she keeps her hands to herself, we’re good.”
Taking her wrists in his hands, Munk slowly backed Della toward the bed. “What did you do in the shower, Della? How did you fix it?”
Although born in New Orleans, I am proud to call myself an Alaskan. I have lived here since 1977. I have seen -40 degrees, hauled water, made bear bacon and I live in a cabin. I have used a fishwheel to catch salmon coming up the Copper River. I was my second husband’s chief mechanic’s helper and roadie. I have cut firewood on shares. I worked as a cocktail waitress during pipeline days in a small lodge on the Richardson Highway.
My second husband, a Scot from Glasgow, was the love of my life. When I write Scots dialect, I personally experienced hearing it from my in laws. When my husband got on the phone to Scotland, after 5 seconds I could barely understand a word.
We moved to Wasilla to get warm. It barely drops past -25 degrees here in the winter. I became a paralegal and worked for over 26 years for the same firm.
Alaska is my home. I never thought I would love it so much, I never want to leave. The beauty of Alaska is a draw I cannot resist. I love the people and the history. I have been captured by a place I came to under duress. Life does play some interesting tricks on one. My love and I were not apart more than 24 hours for 20 plus years. I never wanted to be anywhere but with him. He was a man to run the river with and was my biggest fan.

When she reached the door at the back of the shop, Reese tried the doorknob, not really sure if she would find it locked or unlocked because she’d never tried it before. It wasn’t locked. She blinked, surprised that her confrontation wouldn’t be delayed. Then she pounded up the steep carpet of stairs and stared at the white door at the top of them.
Out of breath and heart pounding so hard she felt it through her chest, she raised a fist to the door and went to town, banging all of her frustration into the woodwork. It flew open and the air was knocked from her lungs for another reason entirely. Her mouth went dry and she swayed backward, Leo’s quick grab saving her from a fall down the stairs.
He yanked her into the apartment by the front of her shirt and kicked the door shut behind her. Then he crossed his arms and stared. She was staring as well. Reese had never seen him without his shirt on. She couldn’t pretend it wasn’t a notable sight, or that her body didn’t respond to it. His shoulder muscles alone were impressive, but then there were the cuts to his biceps, the chiseled pecs and abs, all covered in black ink.
Reese tried to swallow and couldn’t. She stared intently at the artwork, wanting to decipher it. She decided she’d need her brain functioning better than it presently was to attempt such a thing. Big muscles were not her thing—she was prone to go for lanky, lean frames. That tidbit was forgotten as her eyes went up and down the tattooed body before her. It was impossible not to appreciate the beauty of it.
Leo was the equivalent of a dark warrior on an unending, unknown quest, regardless that other than the ink that stained his upper body, there was nothing dark about his looks. From his light brown hair to his gray eyes to his pale skin, he should be forgettable, but there was more to him, something that made him stand out. It was an inconsistency, like all of him, and all of her. And the two of them.
“Better be good,” he growled. “Not even eight in the morning.”
“Funny, I pictured you as a person who got up at the first sign of dawn to not be wasteful of any second of daylight.”
“Thought wrong.”
She forced her eyes from his body and up to his light gray eyes instead—the eyes that judged her from the recesses of her mind when she least wanted. She went on the defensive as she remembered why she was here. “I don’t appreciate you having people check up on me. It’s none of your business what I do or don’t do.”
One pale brown eyebrow lifted. “No smoking in the building.”
She sputtered for a bit before she could get words out. “I wasn’t smoking in the stupid building! And if that isn’t the most lame ass answer I’ve ever heard of for trying to justify having me hauled from a party! I was drinking. I’m twenty-four. I can drink. Unless there’s a rule against that too?”
Reese poked a finger against his hard chest and tried not to get distracted by the smoothness of it. “You may own the apartment building I live in, but you don’t own me. Don’t do that again.”
She spun away from him and reached for the doorknob when he said quietly, “If you can’t be responsible for yourself, then you have no right to be upset when others are.”
Stiffening, Reese digested the fact that he’d spoken a full sentence to her for maybe the first time, and then she mulled his words over. It was on the tip of her tongue to tell him he could shove his apartment and this job right up his ass, but then what? Then she would be jobless and homeless once more. Whether she liked it or not, he did have power over her.
Reese’s lips were trembling, but she somehow managed to keep her voice steady as she said, “I’m not your responsibility.”
“Sure about that? Seems like you are.”
In this moment, Reese hated Leo Chavez.
