What inspired you to write a historical romance?
This is actually my second time writing a historical piece. My first was a young adult series under the name Ruth Silver. It includes Dead Girl Walking and Forget Me Knot (available June 23rd). Both of those are part of the Royal Reaper saga. Those novels took place in the 14th century and with all the research I had previously done on the Black Plague, the clothing, language, and world building, I thought it would be fun to write another story that focused more on the royal side of things, with mischief, murder, and mayhem mixed in.
What time period does Palace Secrets take place?
Palace Secrets takes place in the late 14th century.
How many books are planned for the Palace Secrets series?
Two stories are already written and I’m currently working on the third book, which is still untitled. The second book is Maiden Claimed due for release in early August. Each book can be read as a standalone novel, as they’re written from a different character’s point of view.
Can you give us a hint as to the second book and who’s point of view we might see?
Hannah gets to tell her story. It follows after the events of Palace Secrets, so there’s no retelling of the same story. It’s an entirely new adventure with a character you will hopefully come to know and love.

Leaning forward, so my face is only inches from hers, I say, “I can see that.” Her pupils dilate and I hear her breath hitch. I immediately know my effect on her hasn’t diminished either. It takes everything in me not to pull her into my arms and squeeze the fucking life out of her. Why did I leave it so long to see her? Just being near her again, makes me feel alive. “It’s good to see you again, Indi.”
“Well, the feeling’s not mutual,” she says. She’s lying, I can tell. Her body language is saying the complete opposite to her words. She’s still a stubborn arse I see. My eyes leave hers, gazing down at her lips. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve dreamt of those lips over the past five years. Too many to count. I want to kiss her so bad my fucking chest aches. I let my eyes drop a little lower. First I see is the necklace I bought her. I can’t believe she’s still wearing it. It has me smiling like a damn fool. You have no idea what seeing that means to me.
I watch her chest rise and fall as her breathing quickens. She can deny it all she wants, but she’s affected by me. “My eyes are up here, buddy,” she spits. I want to laugh at her comment. I love her smart mouth. I’m glad this part of our relationship hasn’t changed.
Underneath the material of her white top, I can see a hint of her white lace bra covering the swell of her breast. It gives me an idea. I can’t help myself. I lift the sponge in my hand until it’s hovering over her tits. I hear her gasp when she realises what I’m about to do. I clench my fist tight, the water drips out. A feral, high pitched sound escapes me as I fall to my knees in agony. “Stay the fuck away from me arsehole,” she spits, as she turns and runs inside.

serious addiction to anything Coach and would live on Starbucks if I

About the cover:
I’m always a bit of a nonconformist. When I set out to create a theme for The Bell Forging Cycle I wanted to create a series covers that not only looked great on a shelf but also stood out among the other books within urban fantasy. I intentionally set out to avoid the tropes. The idea was to create a style, where similar elements change but the reader can find familiarity between each book.As with the previous covers, Jon Contino (joncontino.com) created the lettering for Red Litten World. I’ve always been a huge fan of Jon’s work and there is something with his art and craft approach that captures the feel of the series. He nails that looming sense of unease but adds that combination of approachability, which I really like. Honored to have his help yet again.
The background image comes once again from the artist, Gustav Doré. I love Dore’s work, in particular, his woodcuts. I spend a lot of time picking a woodcut that highlight certain themes within the novel. This time the engraving was selected from Dante Alighieri’s Inferno. There Minos stands, centers on the lounging former king, Minos, now judge of the damned in the underworld. It was the perfect image for Red Litten World.
As with Book one, The Stars Were Right, I am referencing Lovecraft’s work within the title. I deviated from this pattern with Book two, Old Broken Road, but it has always been my intent on alluding to the influence of the Lovecraft Mythos on the work. The title Red Litten World comes from a line from H. P. Lovecraft and Zelia Bishop’s short story The Mound:
“…legend said that it had come from a
mysterious inner realm beneath the red-litten
world—a black realm of peculiar-sensed beings
which had no light at all, but which had
great civilisations and mighty gods…”
Each of these little details add to the overall cover and hint at what will lay within its pages. I like scattering little Easter Eggs through stuff like this, from the choice of the background to the little symbols I place along the spine.
I hope this gives you some insight into my process. I’m excited to reveal the cover for Red Litten World. It fits perfectly within the series but brings its own unique look. I can’t wait to get this into the hands of readers.
