I hate when people ask me this question but I like hearing how other writers do it. How do you write?
Depends.
Some stuff (blog posts or short stories) tend to just spill out. They’re often the result of some sort of emotional explosion.
The other stuff (scripts, books, manifestos, baked ziti recipes) are like a battle with myself. I actually got a good chunk of writing done today on the plane and considered it a major victory. Many times, however, I sit down to write and only get a few sentences out.
It helps in all instances if I’ve done my prep-work—research, outline, etc. Still, for me all writing is emotional and sometimes my emotions don’t want to cooperate.
