Alhambra Teens, Awesome Artichokes, New BOBBY Cover, and David Hasselhoff, cont.
Recently I spoke at the Alhambra Library for Big Read Week. It was cool being invited there since it's right across the street from where I went to High School. Plus, I keynoted at the grand opening . . .
Peepy was pleased because they had one of the four basic food groups ready for her . . .
The Super Librarian Duo of Adriana Melgoza and Deborah Takahashi introduced us to the teens . . .
I talked about BOBBY VS. GIRLS (ACCIDENTALLY) . . . Oh! Oh! Oh! Look! Look! Look!

David Hasselhoff, the Peep and the Papparazzi
Okay, so I'm going to the readergirlz author for April (!!!!) and Absolutely Maybe will be the featured book (!!!!!).
I was asked to shoot some footage for a video, so I decided to visit the places that Maybe goes to in the story.
I did things like try to recreate the book cover . . .
. . . by laying on the ground next the James Dean's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . . .
There will be more on the video shoot next month-ish, but in the meantime I wanted to share this Baywatch-ian experienc...

Speed Dating
In my last blog I wrote about an amazing teacher and a group of teens who wrote a book for me . . .
Recently, I received this letter from another fan of ABSOLUTELY MAYBE. It began . . .
"I actually didn't read your book on purpose."
The writer goes on to explain, "I realized I that Lit Lab fourth period and needed a book ASAP, so I went to the library and saw your book." It was the cover that drew her in, she says . . .
. . . then she continues with, "I picked up the b...

Absolutely Positively Maybe
One of the perks of being an author is fan mail.
"YOU get fan mail? YOU?" (Actual quote from daughter when I first started getting fan letters.)
Recently, I got something in the mail that made me burst into tears. It was a book titled POSITIVELY MAYBE: Students Respond to ABSOLUTELY MAYBE by Lisa Yee . . .
The essays, poems and letters the high school students wrote after reading ABSOLUTELY MAYBE were incredible. As an author, you always wonder if your readers get what you were going for. Well...

Arizona Peep and Mac Attack
Last week, Peepy was starring at the Tucson Festival of Books and was honored with her very own ice sculpture at the American Girl Peepy Party . . . er, Tea Party . . .
And if that wasn't enough, she even got lots of presents during the festival . . .
I had a wonderful time, too, including doing a panel with Sisters Grimm author Michael Buckley . . .
Michael and I had spent weeks tackling complicated math problems to discuss and debate . . .
However, when we got to the festival, we learned tha...

Sid Fleischman 1920 - 2010
The first time I met Sid Fleischman, I was an unpublished writer attending my first SCBWI Summer Conference. I had circled Sid's name on the brochure and attended his workshop, taking copious notes. Afterward, I worked up my courage to talk to him. He was kind and generous, and overlooked the fact that I was blathering.
Four years later, he announced my name at the Summer Conference and, at a grand banquet of more than 800 people, presented me with the first Sid Fleischman Humor Award. It chan...

Bookin' in Tucson + Peepy is Immortalized
Peepy and I were in Arizona recently for the Tucson Festival of Books . . .
It was a FABULOUS festival, and Peepy made lots of charming new friends . . .
There were over 76,892 (or 450) authors at the festival, including a slew of children's authors like Robin Brande and 50% of the Baby Mouse colaborators -- Matt Holm . . .
In the Green Room (where the kids authors had their time outs) our books were on display . . .
Our first event of the day was an amazing American Girl Tea Party....

Here Comes the Bride
We're in Tucson, Arizona at the moment, and there will be more about that on our next blog . . .
But the big news right now is that our beloved Scholastic publicist Samantha Wolfert is getting married!!!
Peepy and I decided to design Sami's wedding gown for her. Since Peepy had some fashionista friends over, they helped us brainstorm . . .
We were inspired by the classics . . .

Though we were on the road, that didn't stop us from using the finest materials we could find (at a drugstore)....

Coolidge Cool with Dan Santat + Storyworks Star
On Wednesday, my illustrious illustrator, Dan Santat and I visited Coolidge Elementary School in San Gabriel, CA. Why? For their fabulous Family Literacy Night . . .
Peepy and I visited Coolidge last year and were thrilled to be invited back again!
This time, the featured book of the evening was BOBBY VS. GIRLS (ACCIDENTALLY) . . .
You may remember Dan from his Oscar-worthy BOBBY VS. GIRLS (ACCIDENTALLY) Book Party trailer . . .
Oh! Oh! Did someone say "Oscar"? Okay, alright, since sooooo many...
