Even More Super Famous Authors . . .
So then after the grand gala, there was much more going on at the SCBWI Conference.
The Golden Kite Luncheon was wonderful, especially since it was the 40th one held. SCBWI founders, Lin Oliver and Stephen Mooser were honored . . .
Both have done a magnificent job, starting with three members and growing the organization to over 22,000 with chapters all over the globe. At this year's conference attendees from 49 of the USA's 50 states were represented (hey North Dakota, where were you?). Of the record 1,342 people there were 150 men -- an all-time high, and attendees came from 20 countries including Egypt, Australia, Canada, France, Hong King, S. Korea, Malaysia, Iran, and Germany, Syria.
And now for everyone's favorite subject . . . math!
42% of those at the conference were published.
There were 243 artists/illustrators, 660 writers, 74 editors/publishers, 32 filmmakers, and 1 Peep. (If those numbers don't add up exactly, pretend they do.)
Sid Fleischman Award winner Alan Silberberg was at my table. Seven years ago, I was at the luncheon to receive that award, and this year I was a judge . . .
Alan's speech was moving, heartfelt and funny, just like his book. Here he is with last year's Sid Fleischman winner, Allen Zadoff, with Alan and me . . .
Jenni Holm won the Golden Kite for fiction. Here she as she was being introduced to the crowd of 1,300 . . .
And here's Jenni after she gave her acceptance speech . . .
At the close of the luncheon, Richard Peck gave an amazing and powerful speech. Everyone leapt to their feet when he was done, even Judy Blume . . .
Illustrators were well represented at the conference. Whoa! It's Kadir Nelson and David Small . . .
But wait! Who's that with David? Why it's author Sarah Stewart, who also happens to be married to him, and with her is her bear, Richard . . .
Mary Pope Osborne was so sweet with Peepy . . .
There was sooooo much that went on at the conference, that I thought I'd best give you a short break and blog again later. But as I leave you, here are Richard Peck and Judy Blume arguing over who Peepy liked better . . .
(We'll never tell.)
Oh! And one more thing? If you're working on a book and want to know about revision and beyond, then CHECK THIS OUT. It's a workshop I'll be teaching in September!
Oh! Oh! And one more last thing . . . WARP SPEED's been nominated for YALSA's 2012 Best Fiction for Young Adults! Squeeee!!!!

Literary Celebs Were EVERYWHERE at the SCBWI Conference . . .
Hmmm . . . where were we? Oh, yes! HERE!
So then, amazing authors and illustrators, editors and agents, were EVERYWHERE. It was as if they had all converged at at the SCBWI Conference, although some behaved better than others.
Here's three time Newbery Honoree, and this year's Golden Kite winner for fiction, Jenni Holm and her friend having some quality quiet time (inside and outside) . . .
Sadly, the same cannot be said of Printz winner Libba Bray and her husband/agent Barry Goldblatt. I believe they were discussing who's turn it was to do the dishes . . .
Luckily for all, they remembered there were no dishes to be washed and they made up rather nicely . . .
Peepy was thrilled to see author, friend, and NPR Wait Wait . . . Don't Tell Me producer Emily Ecton. (Here's what happened when I went to one of the shows.) Anyway, Peepy begged to be on the radio, but her audition did not go well.
We crashed an illustrators social and observed them running around the room waving cards in the air. Speaking of illustrators, we ran into our friend and sorta neighbor Lisze Bechtold . . .
The illustrators' portfolio review yielded some marvelous talent. Here's the room while the judges were doing their thing . . .
Lin Oliver interviewed Judy Blume, and we were all laughing and crying and in in awe of Judy . . .
Arthur Levine, my editor extraordinaire, celebrated the 15th Anniversary of Arthur A. Levine Books with a lunch (and dessert) with his authors who were attending the conference. Look! It's his summer intern, Bobbie Pyron, me, Arthur, Greg Pincus, Mike Jung, Martha Brockenbrough and Dan Santat . . .
The bookstore did a brisk business, especially since all the authors and illustrators were on hand to sign their books . . .
Well, hey! It's Ellen Hopkins! And look, Sarah Davis who illustrated my American Girl KANANI books was there, too!
Why, there's THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH'sNorton Juster with Peepy!
Illustrator Ken Min asked me to draw Spock ears when I signed his copy of WARP SPEED. And later, I was so busy yapping to someone that I spelled my name wrong . . .
The Gotham Group had a party and we were invited!
From there, we went directly from that party to another --the SCBWI 40 Winks gala . . .
We saw Newbery winner Linda Sue Park (who dresses the same day and night), Jim Averbeck (who sleeps in his underwear) and Jay Asher (who dresses like a bunny at night) . . .
Sara Etienne was a wild thing, and Tina Nichols Coury channeled her inner tooth fairy, plus we saw Winkin, Blinkin and Nod, Goodnight, Gorilla, The Princess and the Pea and others . . .
It was a blast introducing Emily Ecton and agent Brenda Bowen. Earlier this year Brenda was on Wait Wait . . . Don't Tell Me and Emily had produced the show --- but the two had never met in person before!
Much more went on, and we'll blog about that soon. In the meantime, here's Peepy and her friend Henry Winkler. (He wore yellow in her honor.)

Blubbering Over Judy Blume and More SCBWI Conference Adventures
Before I became a published author in October 2003, I joined the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, hence to be referred to here as the SCBWIABCDEFG. Even though I had been a copywriter, journalist, scriptwriter, and a hand model for a Whitman's Chocolate's ad, I hadn't written a book. Well, a book that had been published, that is.
I credit the SCBWIBSGEU for jumpstarting my career. After my first Summer Conference over a decade ago, I left overwhelmed, energized and inspired. Now, even though I have ten novels published and I'm on the SCBWIVWVEBW Board of Advisors, I still feel that way after ever conference.
This year's is a special one -- the 40th anniversary of the group which has grown from a handful of members to over 22,000.
For me and the other faculty members, the conference began with a dinner on Thursday night . . .
It's always so great to see old friends like Jay Asher and Katie Davis, and my conference ride, Dan Santat . . .
Then there are new friends, like Alan Silberberg who is the year's Sid Fleischman Humor Award winner for MILO: STICKY NOTES AND BRAIN FREEZE. I was so excited to meet him. Seven years ago, I was the first winner of the the award. This year, I was a judge!
(Fascinating Fact: Alan and I both lived in Orlando at the same time, both worked for Disney at the same time, both used the same production facilities at the same time, both knew many of the same people, and both have no recollection of meeting each other.)
Look! It's my editor Arthur Levine with agent Brenda Bowen over there. And over there I see Bruce Coville and SCBWI blogger Lee Wind . . .
Who's that? Oh, just JUDY BLUME . . . YES, IT'S JUDY BLUME!!! And let me tell you, even though she's an icon and a game changer in the children's book world, she is as nice as can be!
Who else at the faculty gathering? Well, how about Cynthia Liu and David Diaz? Oh, and there's Richard Peck!
Hey, hello Laurie Halse Anderson and Libba Bray!!! And who's with Jay Asher this time? Why, it's camera-shy Ann Angel . . .
There was much mingling among east coasters, like editors
It was difficult, but the faculty was wrangled into sitting down. Our fearless leaders, SCBWI founders Lin Oliver and Stephen Mooser introduced the incredible staff and welcomed us . . .
We feasted on garlic fries and sliders, which are small hamburgers. However, when my slider accidentally slid off my plate, Dan Santat invoked the five-second rule and ate it while Richard Jesse Watson was up to no good . . .
And representing the short women and tall men were Moi and Alice Pope, and SCBWIBWVZZD communications and creative director, author Aaron Hartzler (tall, left) and his partner Nate (taller, right) . . .
The next morning, we lined up to march en mass into the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Grand Ballroom. There was a record number of attendees--over 1,300. (The event sold out, otherwise there would have been 17,212 attendees there.)
Here's an Oscar-quality documentary from a faculty POV of what it's like to walk onstage . . .
I'll cover more SCBWIRBWAJBHE conference on my next blog(s), including meeting David Small, Norton Juster, Henry Winkler, Gary Paulsen, Mary Pope Osbourne, and others, but in the meantime, I'll leave you with this . . .
Yes, Judy Blume got to meet Peepy!

Renegade Book Stuff
I love books. I love to read books. I love to write books. I love to eat books. (I just threw that last one in to see if you were paying attention.)
Last month I went to the Renegade Craft Fair in downtown Los Angeles. (I would have posted this sooner, but then I was at Comic-Con cavorting with the characters, et al. You can see what I mean HERE and HERE.)
I was particularly fond of the book-related stuff . . .
There were lots of other cool things there, too . . .
One of our favorite booths had buttons and wallets and stuff made from vintage books . . .
Watch and see what happens with this Doctor Dolittle wallet . . .
How cool is that???!!! Here's Ryan's website if you want one of your own. You can find other bookish stuff from the craft faire HERE, and HERE, and for felt animals and such, HERE!!!
Oh, there was some non-book stuff there, too . . .

Nathan Fillion, Scary Weapons, and Other Comic-Con Commotion(s)
Where were we? Oh, yes, braving the crowds at Comic-Con . . .
I'd say a good 53.7% of the people there had weapons. I however, was only armed with a Peep . . .
Luckily most of the people/creatures/things we ran into were friendly . . .
I was told to go outside when it gets overwhelming, and it was good advice. However, others did the same thing . . .
During one of our breaks, Peepy and I attended the Gotham Group soiree. Scott Westerfeld was there (first photo) and Michael Reisman was lurking in the background. Also there, was super cool Gotham literary manager Eddie Gamarra (second photo, holding Peepy) . . .
At dinner with my agent Jodi Reamer, we ran into Ransom Riggs and his wife Abby. (I was carrying movie posters she had worked on!) The last time we saw Ransom, he ate a sandwich.
On Day Two, I attended Comic-Con with Son. He didn't want me to take too many photos with Peepy because he thinks that's weird. Uh, hello Mr. Mask, did you look in a mirror?
Don't tell, but when he wasn't looking, I managed a few shots . . .
We saw some celebs like Noah Wylie and R2D2 . . .
The creator of Hellboy, Mike Mignola, was there, so we got his autograph on comic books and a mask . . .
Now, when you first get to Comic-Con, they give you these cool bags that are big enough to hold a w-o-o-k-i-e-e (I had initinally spelled it wrong in WARP SPEED, but my Star Wars guy corrected me!) . . .
So we filled up our bags with posters and stuff. Sadly, we weren't able to take home everything (or everyone) we saw . . .
Later, we got a hot tip that we should attend Quick Draw. That's where Sergio Aragones and others were on stage drawing cartoons faster that you could look at them. (Yes, try to figure that out!) . . .
It was great fun and the quick wit and hilarious cartoons left me in awe. As for more awesome awe, Son's a fan of The Last Airbender (the animated series), so we made sure to go the Legend of Korra panel . . .
A sneak peek of the new series premiered and my video camera happened to be on. Just listen to the crowd reaction!
Perhaps the most fun of Comic-Con was the seeing the enthusiasm of the fans. I loved it that this was a sanctioned Halloween where adults can act like kids!
On the last day, tragedy occurred. I got sick. I was unable to attend the CASTLE panel and see Nathan Fillion. I know he must have been disappointed, too. After all, we have history . . .
Alas, we did not connect in person, however, I was able to get this poster . . .
And I did bring home a lovely felted tree, two bottles of poison, and some Big Foot cologne (the other stuff I already had) . . .
Ah, Comic-Con, until next year . . .

Surviving Comic-Con . . .
So then, after the Scholastic party with the likes of this fellow . . .
. . . the next morning I was one of over 120,000 who "trekked" (Get it? Trek. Trekked. Star Trek. Hahaha. Okay, never mind.) Anyway, I was one of many who made it to Comic-Con in San Diego.
Now, I know what you're wondering. Well, that, and also, "How did Lisa get tickets when they sold out within four hours?"
Well, because I am fluent in Klingon . . .
. . . and wrote WARP SPEED, a novel with lots of Star Trek, Star Wars and Batman in it, I was deemed a professional and invited to attend as a guest of Comic-Con!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There were lots of Darth Vaders and Trekkers and even Smurfs, but there was only one Peep . . .
Usually, when Peepy has her picture taken, there are some who think it's odd--like my kids. However, at Comic-Con there's pretty much nothing that can phase the crowd.
That said, I'd share this museum-quality photo essay of Peepy and her new friends . . .
Wow, look at these strange creatures!!!
(That's Jake Parker, Dan Santat, and James Burks!)
Well, there's much more. But I'm going to give your eyeball a break for now.
Oh wait! But before you go, here's this cool review of MILLICENT MIN, GIRL GENIUS -- the very first book I wrote eight years ago!
Stay tuned for the next blog and . . . Peepy Meets the Hellboy Creator, our video of The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra sneak peek, and other great stuff!!!

Comic-Con Kickoff
Comic-Con began for me on Thursday night when my agent, Jodi Reamer, and I attended Scholastic's party celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Jeff Smith's BONE series . . .
(Recently, someone tried to impersonate Jodi and sent out fake e-mails saying they were her.)
The grand gala took place at the Hilton's waterfront rooftop . . .
As soon as Ellie Berger, Scholastic President of Trade Publishing, saw Peepy she immediately tried to sign her for a multi-book deal. Luckily, Jodi, who is also Peeps agent, was there . . .
Publicist Sheila Marie Everett hung out with Lizette Serrano who put the amazing shindig together . . .
David Saylor, Scholastic VP and Creative Director, asked Peepy to pen her own graphic novel series . . .
Scholastic Book Fair's Anna Swenson and my Star Trek Go-To-Guy, Ed Masessa told Peepy that her books will sell millions . . .
Lots of super graphic novelists and illustrators were there, too. Like Missile Mouse's Jake Parker, who also illustrated Michael Chabon's new picture book!!!
Kazu Kibuishi of Amulet fame was there with his adorable son who took an immediately liking to my Peep . . .
Hooray! Why is Raina Telgemeier smiling? Maybe it because she won an Eisner for her graphic novel, Smile!!!!!!
Look! It's dapper Ted Naifeh, illustrator of The Good Neighbors . . .
Doug TenNapel of Bad Island made Peepy nervous, but later signed a book for her . . .
My good friend, Dan Santat was there, too, to celebrate the release of Sidekicks!
And of course, the man of the (double) decade(s), Jeff Smith . . .
Author Cecil Castellucci was recently returned from Author Space Camp. She and I checked out the most awesome Bone photo booth . . .
It was so fun, Jodi, Dan and I crammed inside. Pssst . . . here's the secret footage I shot without them knowing. Um, it's sideways on purpose and not because I don't know how to fix it. . .
(Disclaimer: Dan and I had agreed that on the last photo we'd surprise Jodi and pretend to punch her in the face, because . . . well, cause we love her. But when I reminded Dan by yelling "as discussed!" He thought I said, "act disgust" and that's why I'm punching Jodi and he's making a fretful face.)
Huh? Did someone say Babymouse? Why, yes, it's Matt Holm . . .
Woo hoo! MAD magazine's own Sergio Arigones was at the party . . .
(We saw him in Ojai a couple of years ago, too!!!)
It was so cool to finally meet author Elizabeth Bunce . . .
Oh, and we can't forget this--there was CAKE!!!

Beach or Books . . . 12 Teens Decide
It was a gorgeous sunny Southern California day on Tuesday. The kind of day where locals and visitors flock to the beach . . .
(Above: Visiting authors Julia DeVillers and Jay Asher first met in Santa Monica and played in sand with their shoes on. CLICK HERE to find out when.)
However, there was a super select group of teens who came here instead . . .
That's right! They came to the Santa Monica Public Library. Why? Well, we'll get to that. But first, you need to know that Peepy and I were also at the library on that day . . .
We've been to the Santa Monica Library before and one time we even hung out with Henry Winkler here . . .
On this visit, of course, we gravitated toward our favorite area . . .
We had heard there were some talented teen writers in the building, so we went in search of them . . .
Then we wandered into this totally cool room hoping they'd appear . . .
And they did!
Why? Because there was cake?
Yes! It was Ann Wagner Youth Librarian's birthday week (!!!). However, they were also here to take part in Write On! A Teen Writer's Workshop.
Guess who was the guest workshop leader? Yes, again! (Man you're good at guessing.) It was me. The topic was POV, as in "point of view."
So I put the kids to work . . .
Of course, while they were writing, Peepy was goofing off and even took a short nap . . .
I was so impressed by the teens' writing and the insights.
Then again, these are extraordinary young adults. Ones who are spending two afternoons a week of their summer vacations to work on their creative writing. How's that for dedicated!
And here's a special treat. An Oscar-quality documentary. Um, I was going to post a feature-length video of people writing, but it probably would have been too breathtaking for you to watch and you wouldn't be able to get it out of your mind and it would cause you to think about it all day and nothing would get done. So, here's the mini-version . . .

All Hail Harry Potter!!!
It's possible you heard? The latest (and last) Harry Potter movie came out on Friday.
Now, since JK Rowling and I are practically dear friends, and because my editor Arthur Levine is the editor of the Harry Potter series, and my other editor Cheryl Klein is the continuity editor for the series, I knew I just had to see the film.
(That's Arthur and Cheryl having a lively discussion about the Harry Potter books.)
(And this is Harry, Hermione and Ron reacting to editors behaving badly.)
Look! It's Ms. Rowling signing a copy of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows for Son . . .
Anyway, to get into the spirit of the series, I donned my Buckbeak shirt and headed to the movies.
Peepy saw Voldemort in the movie theater lobby and they duked it out.
(Peepy is fine. She reduced Voldemort to cardboard.)
After the movie, which was wonderful, we headed to the Harry Potter Tribute Exhibition at Nucleus.
Now, I hesitated about whether or not to show you the following film. That's because it rivals Harry Potter 7.5 in terms of artistry, scope and drama. However, Peepy said it would be rude not to share it. So, here is is: Gallery Nucleus, The Movie . . .
Lots of awesome artists contributed to the show, including the Harry Potter illustrator Mary GrandPre . . .
And Sidekicks creator, our friend Dan Santat . . .
Just look at all this wonderful Potteresque stuff!!!
Happy Harry Potter, everyone!!!
(A photo of Daniel and Rupert when they first met. Little did they know what was in store for them, and the rest of us!)
Oh! And speaking of Harry Potter, here's an interview with me on the Pen and Ink Blog!!!! (Okay, so it has nothing to do with Harry Potter, but it could if you use your imagination!)

Ransom's Peculiar Downtown Lunch
A couple weeks back, I went to Ransom Rigg's first ever book signing. It was a gala event and he wiggled his foot for us . . .
Ransom, who also writes for that delightfully Mensa-braniacic tome Mental Floss, penned an article about his foot and those who fidget.
CLICK HERE for the rest of the article about creative fidgeters.
Anyway, it's fitting that after my blog about Tim Burton, we move on to Ransom and his uber popular novel Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.
I LOVED the spooky, creepy, awesome book, although at times it did make me feel funny . . .
Not to long ago, Ransom and I had lunch in downtown Los Angeles.
My Peep and I got there early, so I explored . . .
There was lots of excitement, like this shell game . . .
Right across the street, someone was in trouble . . .
I hoped it wasn't Ransom, so I headed to our lunch place, which coincidentally, I had eaten at before with another novelist . . .
Phew! Ransom was there and hadn't had a ride in an ambulance or police vehicle, at least not within the hour . . .
Lest you think we are goofballs, I'll have you know we had a serious literary lunch. The kind where we wittily bantered about themes and plots and symbolism. I even interviewed Ransom. Here's our Q & A. Well, from what I can decipher. I took notes. Only, now I can't read them . . .
From what I can figure, here's a partial transcription . . .
Lisa: Ransom, what creeps you out.
Ransom: Child beauty pageant contestooons.
Lisa: Salty or sweet snacks?
Ransom: It's important to mix . . . ice cream myphone texture
Lisa: Book currently reading?
Ransom: New Brian Green.
Lisa: Pets
Ransom: Cat Nico mews in jamma
So then, lunch continued, and it was much more coherent that my handwriting. In fact, I even videoed Ransom and his food.
But rather than just showing it to you, I asked Katie Dersnah Mitchell, librarian at Saline District Library in Michigan, and huge fan of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, "What do you think NY TIMES Bestselling Author Ransom Riggs eats for lunch?"
Katie gave it some serious thought and said, "Well, at first I figured poultry might be out the question, but it appears that geese were not suspected of being ymbrynes, so I am assuming the same of chickens. Yet, chicken of any sort seems much too tame for the mind that created Miss Peregrine and her cohorts. So, I am going to go with my husband's grandfather's favorite meal from his childhood in Wales--bangers and mash. However, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the bangers turned out to be blood sausage. ;)
(Katie used a word that those of you who have not read the book may be familiar with. Yes, "geese.")
Well, Katie, we have a surprise for you. Here's Ransom in a deliberately blurry, too dark, reddish glare of a video, sharing his lunch fare with all of us . . .
And if you want to eat your lunch (or dinner or snack or brunch or breakfast) and get deliciously scared, here's the Ransom-made director's cut of book trailer for his novel.
Now, I don't want to leave you terrified. So here's something cute you can think about before falling asleep tonight. Yes, that's my dog deciding between a book and a chew toy.
(The chew toy won.)
