Mothers and Daughters and Readers and Writers
When we last blogged, we were at the LA TIMES Festival of Books . . .
However, this being Mother's Day weekend, we interrupt book blogging for this important message --
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL THE MOMS OUT THERE!!!
Now, my mom didn't know this, but my friends at AOL and Red Room invited to write an essay about her for ParentDish.com. Here's how it begins . . .
You can read the rest HERE , or I can read it to you, here . . .
(Um . . . I'm not sure why everything is backward. Sorry about that!)
Next Blog: Back to the LA TIMES book festival!

Behind-the-Scenes at the LA TIMES Festival of Books
This weekend was the biggest book festival in the country . . .
In the past it was held at UCLA, but this year it was at my alma mater, USC . . .
When I checked into my hotel, the bellman asked if I needed help with my luggage . . .
It was Jarrett Krosoczka! Funny, but all this time I had thought he was a bestselling author/illustrator and one of this year's Children's Choice Award Winners.
Soon it was time for lunch with a people who are good at drawing. Here's Tom Warburton and Marla Frazee . . .
(No Peeps were actually harmed.)
Also at lunch were Dan Santat (left) and Mo Willems, who was scheduled to be on the Target Stage . . .
I was booked for the Target Stage, too . . .
Backstage in the Green Room, I ran into R.L. Stine. The last time we met, things were, um, tense between us, because we were competing against each other in this Game Show hosted by Jon Scieszka . . .
This time, however, we played nice . . .
Megan McDonald was there, too! Megan and I had done the Julie and Ivy books for American Girl. (She wrote the Julie's stories, I wrote Ivy's.)
Megan's fabulous Judy Moody books have been made into a movie! It'll be out in June, but in the meantime, here's Jordana Beatty, the star of the film . . .
Then Jarrett showed up (again) . . .
It was so cool because I got to introduce Jarrett to Megan --and they were huge fans of each other's work!
I also hung out with Jamie Lee Curtis . . .
(Okay, okay, well, our posters hung out together.)
Here are some super secret shots of the backstage area . . .
Oh, look! It's Shammy Dee, the emcee . . .
Three . . . two . . . one . . . oh wait. I had to get the microphone on first . . .
Okay! Let's try that again. Three . . . two . . . one . . . I was on stage . . .
It was so fun talking about my American Girl books, ALOHA, KANANI and GOOD JOB, KANANI!!!
Then it was time to sign books. Peepy and I had our own security detail to take us to the autograph table!
Soon, we'll be blogging about the second day of the festival, the book signing for WARP SPEED and other novels at the Scholastic booth, more famous authors, and what's going on here . . .
In the meantime . . .

Scholastic Kids Press Corp Conversation . . .
There's Barbara Walters, there's Anderson Cooper, there's Brian Williams, but they'd all better watch out because now there's . . . Damien Murphy!
Damien is a reporter for Scholastic Kids Press Corp . . .
Recently, Damien came to my house to interview me about WARP SPEED, my new novel featuring Marley Sandelski, a Star Trek geek who gets beat up everyday at school.
Son, who's also a filmmaker, and Damien's mom assisted with the shoot . . .
It was great fun and Damien was a real pro . . .
Here's the interview . . .
Of course, the really BIG interview wasn't with me, it was with Peepy . . .
Thanks, Damien, I had a great time!!!!

Alice Malfunctions, My Agent and Me at Disneyland
Yes, it was that time of year again!
What's that, you ask. Well, the Annual Summit, of course. Once a year (that would be the annual part), my agent, Jodi Reamer of Writers House, and I get together to discuss serious matters like pastries, geometry and Pez.
As always, we hold these discussion at Disneyland since, um, since . . . because . . . um, because we need to. Like this year and that year.
Look! It's museum-quality corporate shots I took with my new iPhone. As you can see, I haven't figured out how to get a wide shot and a close up in the same frame, even though I am an expert when it comes to Apple products . . .
More? Yep. Candid shots of us discussing the future of publishing within the scope of global economics and string theory . . .
Of course, while Jodi and I were working, someone else was playing . . .
Wait! Whaaa . . . what are those last two photos? It's not . . . is it?
YES! Those are actual photos of when the Alice in Wonderland ride broke down while WE WERE ON IT.
Observe this LYBE (Lisa Yee Blog Exclusive) -- a professional camera crew (that would be me and my new iPhone) were on the scene. Here's (semi) dramatic footage of the (sorta) daring rescue . . .
Disclaimer: No proofreaders were harmed (or even used) in the creation of this blog.
Live in or near Los Angeles, or want to visit? Then come to the Los Angeles Time Festival of Books! I'll be there (along with tons of other authors) on April 30 and May 1st!!!!
Here's a lineup of who will be on the Target Stage.
I'll be there Saturday at 4 pm, then signing with Scholastic at noon on Sunday!

Happy Easter Encore
One year ago, Peepy and her friends made the epic almost-Oscar-winning-Peeple's-Choice-award-winning film, A CAUTIONARY EASTER.
What we didn't tell you last year, was that lots of famous actors and actress really wanted roles in this movie . . .
However, in the end, we decided that the parts should go to whomever/whoever was best at emoting. And so it was.
Now, back by popular demand, and because I am too busy trying to solve the nation's gas crisis, here's an encore of that history-making epic . . .
Um, after the video debuted, we got some comments that perhaps marshmallow Peeps were harmed in the making of the masterpiece. However, you need to know that no one was hurt, and that stunt doubles were used. To prove this, here is a cast photo taken after the filming was done . . .
For more compelling and classic videos, check out the Lisa Yee and Son Channel.
For more Peep-a-tastic fun, CLICK HERE for a vintage (2007) blog o' explosions.

Claire Created the Characters, I Wrote the Story
What do Jane Yolen, Roland Smith, Lisa Yee, Margaret Peterson Haddix, Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy, Christopher Paul Curtis and Ann M. Martin have in common???
We'll get to that soon. But first, Storyworks magazine had this totally cool contest . . . they asked kids to "create a character."
The winning character would then come to life on the magazine pages, via a short story written by a published author. There were over TEN THOUSAND entries!!!!
Past authors who have penned Create a Story stories include . . . that gaggle of author pictured with Peepy, above!!! (Well, all but one.)
So then, this is how it worked. Out of the 10,000 entries, I was sent the Top 20 . . .
It was a HARD CHOICE to pick just one . . .
But I selected Claire's entry about a girl named Rian Shoe from Salem, Oregon . . .
As always, I did an outline and wrote the story using my Scrivener program . . .
Here's "The Great Fix-It Fiasco" . . .
Claire and her classmates will receive autographed copies of my books BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) and WARP SPEED . . .
Um. Puppy did not want me to sign books. She wanted to play . . .
Speaking of short stories, I also have another one out right now at this very moment! This one's in American Girl magazine, and called, "Kanani Saves the Day" . . .
Changing subjects here, although still in a story-telling mode, one of the hardest things to write can be the antagonists, that is -- the bad guy. So this August at the SCBWI Summer Conference, I'll be teaching a writer's intensive class called "Creating Compelling Bad Guys and Bullies" . . .
If you haven't signed up for the conference yet, better hurry. Just look at this line up of the best editors, authors and illustrators in the business!!!

Book Trailers and Book Signings (and a Hunchback)
Hey! Remember that Klingon video Dan Santat and I made to entice people to come to the WARP SPEED and BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) Book Launch Party?
Well, Scholastic rejiggered it to make it into a book trailer!!! See . . .
Of course, it's not to be confused with the other book trailer/interview for WARP SPEED . . .
Not too long ago, my Peep and I were at the most awesome Apostrophe Books in Long Beach, CA . . .
Our book(s) signing was held outside . . .
There was free fun and free marshmallow Peeps for all!!!
Although, some had more fun than others . . .
Hey! Ours wasn't the only book signing recently. My pal, the sensational Sonya Sones is out with a fabulous new book . . . THE HUNCHBACK OF NEIMAN MARCUS! (True Trivia: While in college, I worked in the stationery department of Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills.)
What were we looking at? Why, this gorgeous spread that Sonya put out, of course!!!
In other news, here's an an interview for Amazing Kids magazine with nine-year old reporter Anni . . .
It began like this . . .

Glory, Glory, Edward Gorey + Art Center + Geek Life
I know I was just in Kauai, and then at home writing about Beverly Cleary for the Huffington Post.
But now I'm back in Boston. Sort of.
Huh? Well, again, via the magic of my Time Machine, I am able to take you back to the glorious afternoon I spent in Bean Town. After the shenanigans at The Blue Bunny, Peepy and I spent the afternoon visiting places like Trinity Church . . .
The Boston Public Library had critters nearby . . .
Peepy tried to ice skate . . .
She didn't do too well, but was consoled by a cupcake . . .
However, the highlight of the day was a visit to the Boston Athenauem to visit the Edward Gorey Exhibit!!!
We weren't allowed to take photos of the exhibit, however, librarian Suzanne Terry gave us a private tour of the Children's Library! She also introduced us to a lovely Madeline doll who travels the world, like Peepy!
As many of you know, I have the second largest collection of Winnie-the-Poohs in America . . .
They reside in the Pooh Museum in White River, Canada. Well, here are some Poohs that I don't have (yet). They live in the Boston Athenaeum Children's Library with Madeline . . .
Ah, what a lovely afternoon. A children's library AND Edward Gorey?
B is for Bliss.
Speaking of drawings, I recently heard from an Art Center grad student. He invited me to his thesis presentation. Now, I often get, er, interesting requests, like the time someone wanted a pair of my shoes. Normally, I decline, since one never knows what's to become of things.
However, when Zen Wang explained that he found me while waiting in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles, I thought it was fate that I should attend, and I'm glad I did.
(Zen was looking for an Asian American author and he picked up a newspaper that mentioned my appearance here.)
Here's Zen and the Dancing with the Stars judges. (Or maybe they were his teachers? Hard to tell since they had such great moves.)
And, look! Here's the charming book he created as part of his project . . .
To see Zen's conceptual work, CLICK HERE.
And finally, you gotta check out Bob Boyle's GEEK LIFE . . .
Bob (Emmy Award winning creator of Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! and author/illustrator of Hugo and the Really, Really, Really Long String and Celebrity Judge) referenced an author who has problems with internet addiction. I won't tell you who it is, but here's a hint: It's one of these two . . .
CLICK HERE to see the comic, and who the author is.

Writing About Beverly Cleary's 95th Birthday for The Huffington Post
To help celebrate Beverly Cleary's 95th birthday, Huffington Post invited me to write an essay about this amazing women, her influence on my career, and what she means to the world.
As a huge fan of her books, it was an honor to write this piece . . .
Here's how it begins . . .
CLICK HERE to read the entire essay on Huffington Post. I also video-taped me reading, and you can watch it here . . .

Kauai Draws to a Close (Pun Intended)
Where were we? Oh, yes! Having a wonderful time on Kaua'i!
The Kauai Visitors Bureau and the Kauai Monk Seal Watch Program (KMSWP) held an essay contest, along with KONG, FM. I was one of the judges, and here's my super secret ballot . . .
And the winner was Eva Wilson . . .
In addition to reading her award-winning essay live on the radio, she was given an American Girl Kanani doll, and book autographed by Moi!
One evening, there was a spectacular dinner at the Grand Hyatt Resort with members of the press . . .
(That's with Cindy Richards, editor of the super cool Traveling Mom, with Dr. Charles Littnan of NOAA, and Moi)
The next day was a Drawing Contest at the Kauai Beach Resort. Each girl was given a box of Crayons instructed to include Kanani and a monk seal on Kauai (in the American Girl stories, Kanani helps rescue, then raise money, to help save the seals) . . .
Then, it was time for the honorable judges to do their thing . . .
While they were judging, my American Girl editor, Jennifer Hirsch, sang . . .
(Actually, she talked about how the Kanani books and doll were created.)
Then, it was my turn. I discussed global economics and Peepy. Oh, and what it was like to write the Kanani books . . .
Sue Kanoho, from the Kauai Visitors Bureau, greeted Eva, who was invited to read her essay and serve as a judge. Here we are in our tastefully chic color-coordinated ensembles . . .
Hawaii Stream was there filming, so of course, they sought out Peepy, again . . .
Drawing prizes included Kanani books and a plush monk seal . . .
(That's me giving out books, since I am an author. And that's Charles giving out a monk seal since he's a monk seal -- er, monk seal expert.)
Look! It's the first place winners. Both girls won American Girl Kanani dolls . . .
In the 11-12 years old category Nalani Thain's picture won . . .
And Isabella Fox took 1st Place for the 8-10 years olds . . .
Here's Hawaii Stream's video of the event . . .
Ah, what a wonderful time we had in Kaua'i! Here's Peepy, reminiscing and having her last bowl of saimen before leaving the island . . .
Farewell, Kaua'i . . .
We're home now, but were able to bring back some great memories of our trip . . .
If you weren't able to make it to Kauai to hear me talk about creating the Kanani stories, you can at GIRL DOLL TALK. Yes! A couple of girls interviewed me for their site. CLICK HERE to listen to the interview.
