Authors, Editors and Illustrators Converge at KitLit Drink Night
When last we blogged, we were at BEA (BookExpo America), hobnobbing with fascinating, well-dressed bookish people . . .
Wait. What? No way! There's more???!!!!
That night we ventured over to KidLit Drink Night to benefit RIF.
(The fellow waving is Harold Underdown, and that's Melanie Hope Greenberg, on the right, pretending that he's not there. Harold has been known to behave badly in social situations.)
It's always great to see uber librarian/blogger Betsy Bird, the woman Forbes called "the most powerful, most beautiful, most smartest, most strongest, most most-est blogger*** in kids' books" . . .
(A couple of years ago, Peepy went MISSING while we were visiting Betsy at the New York Public Library. It was (almost) a tragedy.)
Betsy's soon-to-be delivered baby girl is not named Molly. However, there are over 80 books autographed to Molly. CLICK HERE to find out what I am blathering about.
Everywhere we looked, there were authors and illustrators. Oh, hello! It's NY TIMES bestselling author and bon vivant Michael Buckley . . .
(The last time Michael and I saw each other we were debating humor in Arizona. Er, not if there is humor in Arizona, but we were in Arizona debating about humor. Okay, I'll leave that alone now.)
Over there! Behold, it's award-winning illustrator Brian Floca gazing into the future!
(The last time we saw Brian, he was a quad.)
Katie Davis and Peepy have so much in common since both are bright, beautiful and effervescent . . .
Peepy was determined to pitch her epic memoir/fashion tip book to lovely Little Brown editor Alvina Ling . . .
Not one to leave anything to chance, Peeps also gave talented Clarion editor and author Daniel Nayeri the scoop on her best-seller-to-be . . .
Of course, Peepy will need some stellar creative, so she took a meeting with Abram's dapper Creative Director Chad Beckerman . . .
(Michael Buckley is angling to collaborate with Peeps on her book, but she'd prefer solo author credit.)
Later, Peep peered into Daniel's totally cool book promo piece . . .
Oh, look! It's maggot-hating Newbery Award winner Linda Sue Park with Daniel . . .
(Despite THIS HORRIFIC occurrence, Linda Sue is still my friend.)
We asked them to be still so we could focus on them. There. That's better . . .
(Who's that with them? Why, that's awesome author Barry Lyga, of course.)
Linda Sue uttered something deeply profound and we captured it in this Oscar-quality video . . .
Hey, a shout out to my fabulous editor Cheryl Klein and Betsy Bird for organizing the event!
(That's Cheryl, above. She got engaged Jane Austen-style.)
The next day on my way to lunch in Brooklyn, I observed this . . .
One of those things is not real. Can you guess what's real and what's not?
Here's a hint . . .
If you guessed that Barry Lyga is not real, then you have to guess again. That's because, it's the subway that's fake! Yes, it was built for the Men In Black 3 movie!
And here's the real, honest to goodness, Barry . . .
(Barry and I once shared a meal in Las Vegas!)
There's even more of our New York Adventures, and we'll be blogging about it next. In the meantime, here's a sneak peek of the next blog . . .
***Forbes mostly said those things.

KidLit Creators Run Rampant in NYC - BEA, Part Deux
Okay! So after hanging out with Jon Hamm (sort of), Day One of BEA (BookExpo America) continued into the night.
Met up with old pal (as in I've known her for a long time), Elise Broach, on the right, and finally got to meet the marvelous Natalie Standiford.
Wait, there's more . . . look, there's that talented and handsome Bennett Madison!
The four of us debated the misuse of who/whom, which one of us should run for president, and advanced algebra.
The next day, it was back to BEA. So, so, so fun seeing friends, like Egmont VP/Publisher Elizabeth Law . . .
NY TIMES bestselling author Lisa McMann and I rendezvoused for the second time in a month . . .
Hooray! It's John Rocco's new book with our Young People's literature ambassador, Katherine Paterson . . .
(John was also there for the unveiling of his latest Rick Riordan book cover.)
It's always great to see Megan McDonald, here with JUDY MOODY a.k.a. Jordanna Beatty.
What's that? What does Jordanna have to say about Peepy? Let's find out . . .
Michael Northrup wanted to meet Peepy, but couldn't find her . . .
This unassuming multiple Caldecott Honor winner is from our hometown-ish . . .
I waited in line for Tom Perrotta's new book THE LEFTOVERS. (I've read EVERYTHING he's ever written, well except for his cancelled checks.)
Speaking on lines, here's mine for my American Girl KANANI signing . . .
The signing for my American Girl 2011 Girl of the year KANANI books went great! I signed several million copies (more or less) . . .
It was lunch with the gals, Sarah Darer Littman and Julia DeVillers and we discussed global warming, geometry and, er, the dearth of pronouns . . .
One of us was celebrating a birthday, but I won't say who/whom. However, here's a hint . . .
Later, we went out for birthday drinks with NY TIMES bestselling Peter Brown . . .
Here's Peter with a deep and insightful message to the world . . .
Oh! And I can't forget, we also ran into Coe Booth and Editor/Author/Everything NY TIMES bestselling author David Levithan. Both really wanted to tell you this important message . . .
As you can see from 73% of the videos, REVISION* and EDITING* is crucial to being an author.
The evening was tres exciting because it was KidLit Drink Night, benefiting, RIF!!! But I'll blog about that next so you can rest your eyeballs.
In the meantime, here's a preview pic of an unnamed editor and Newbery Award winner at the event . . .
*NO REVISION OR EDITING WAS DONE ON THE VIDEOS.

Celebs and KidLit Stars at BEA - Day One
Headed to New York for one of the largest gatherings of book people in the world - BookExp America a.k.a. BEA.
Got up at 3:30 a.m. to catch a 4:20 a.m. ride to the airport. Ah, the glamorous life of a traveler!
Things got immensely better once I landed at JFK. That's because I had dinner with my friends from American Girl . . .
(I apologize to the women who are only showing arms. You will have to take my word that they are beautiful.)
The conversation and meal was delightful. Can anyone say "seafood paella?"
Our friend, National Book Award Winner Jeannie Birdsall was also in town. So, Peeps and I rendezvoused with her in Times Square . . .
(We felt safe in Times Square because Jeannie is head of my posse/bodyguard brigade.)
The next morning, I got lost trying to find my way to brunch with my Arthur A. Levine/Scholastic editors . . .
But I found them!!!!
(Above: One person/Peep is Cheryl Klein and one is Arthur Levine and one is Peepy, but I'm going to make you guess who's who.)
Not only are Arthur and Cheryl talented, but they are witty, too. Here's video proof . . .
Then it was over BEA to autograph my American Girl 2011 Girl of the Year books . . .
We signed lots and lots of books (each Post-It has someone's name on it) . . .
(The most popular name of the day? S-o-p-h-i-a!!!)
It was fun meeting American Girl fans. Plus, I got to see Jordanna Beatty, the star of Megan McDonald's JUDY MOODY movie. The last time we saw each other was HERE . . .
And look! Here's Megan Kelley Hall with her daughter . . .
After, we wandered the convention floor . . .
Documentarian Michael Moore was there, and so was Skate King Tony Hawk and others . . .
Soon it was time to head to the Scholastic booth . . .
I had a meeting with my Scholastic publicist, Lauren Felsenstein. We ventured outside the convention, and it a good thing we did because WE SAW JON HAMM!!!!
But after oogling, it was all business. Yes, Lauren and Peepy had a very intense (but ultimately productive) meeting . . .
(Yes, Lauren is helping Peepy with her goal of ultimate world domination.)
However, the highlight of the afternoon was when author/poet Richard Michelson showed up . . .
Rich knew all about my book WARP SPEED, about a Star Trek geek who worships Mr. Spock . . .
Now, Richard has a marvelous art gallery in Northampton. Not only does he show wonderful children's book art, but Rich represents Leonard Nimoy's photography. And so he got the original Mr. Spock to sign this for me . . .
EEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeK!!!!! I felt like Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory.
Ah hem. Okay, calming down. Calming down.
Next blog -- Much more BEA, famous authors and other grand stuff. (We've only covered the first morning and afternoon!)

Speaking of St. James and Let's Eat Pie!
I'm in New York at this very exactly precise moment and will blog that soon. But first, there's this . . .
Last week, on the very exactly precise same day that I drew pictures in the park with author/illustrator Mark Crilley . . .
. . . I traveled to St. James School in downtown Los Angeles . . .
In honor of my coming, they arranged for the In-N-Out truck to be there . . .
(Or maybe it was there for a fundraiser.)
Before my presentation snooped around the library, while Peepy made new friends . . .
Soon it was time to be interviewed by these inquisitive video journalists . . .
While I was being asked questions, my Peep set up the projector . . .
Oh man, those St. James kids are smart and talented! Look what happened when I asked, "How many of you know String Theory, can bake a flourless chocolate cake, and can wrestle an alligator while reading a book?"
Speaking of books, the Smithsonian's Book Dragon has some great things to say about WARP SPEED.
CLICK HERE to read the review.
Speaking of books, some more -- BOBBY VS. GIRLS (ACCIDENTALLY) has been nominated for the 2012 Magnolia (Mississippi) Children's Choice Award AND it's also on the Master List for the Sunshine State Young Readers Award !!!! (I think we should all celebrate this by eating pie. Specifically, Mississippi Mud Pie and Key Lime Pie.)
BTW, one of Bobby's best friends is named . . . ST. JAMES!!! And I went to St. James School to speak!!!
(That's St. James on the right. The boy, not the school.)
Here's a awesomely (sp?) cool review of the book from ProseandKahn.
Alright! Like I mentioned at the top of this blog -- New York (and the fabulous BEA aka Book Expo America) is up next. In the meantime, can you guess who this famous actor is on the right?
(Here's a HINT.)
Plus, look who got to have their picture taken with Peepy!

Drawing Pictures in the Park with Mark
Last Thursday, I decided to hop on a train to San Juan Capistrano . . .
It's about an hour-ish from Los Angeles, and the last time I was there, I had a spectacular literary encounter with my childhood idol, Mary Calhoun.
I was wandering about the park, when LOOK! I came across these lovely books basking in the cacti . . .
I was about to grab them, when this fellow, author/illustrator, Mark Crilley, ran past . . .
Of course, I gave chase, but he was (almost) as fast a runner as Marley Sandelski, the Star Trek geek in WARP SPEED who gets beat up everyday. Speaking of which, here's a Lovely Review of the book from GuysLitWire. (It includes me speaking Klingon.)
Anyway, Mark scrambled up a tree to elude me . . .
But that was okay, because the cacti still had two books left . . .
What a surprise! They were BRODY'S GHOST, a new graphic novel series created by . . . you guessed it, Mark Crilley!
Now then. Here's a Jeopardy!-worthy question for you. What does this man have in common with Mark and Me?
Here's a hint(s) . . .
Nope. He's the identical twin of these two. However both of the men, above, have had characters named after them in my books! (That's Mr. Kinnoin and Mr. Glick.)
Which means . . . the thing in common, that Mark and I didn't know when we first met in cyberspace, this is not a run-on sentence, was that we both named a character after Dr. Gary Seto in books that we had written!!!
He's in a book in Mark's AKIKO series and in SO TOTALLY EMILY EBERS .
Is that totally Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, or what?
(Above: A highly scientific chart.)
Here's Mark signing a book for my doctor . . .
Why, look! It's a totally professional video I shot using my new iPhone . . .
I noticed that Mark was doing that show-offy thing that artists do. You know. Draw. So when I signed WARP SPEED for Mark, I thought I would intimidate him and draw, too . . .
If you like to draw, CLICK HERE for Mark's YouTube Channel and you can learn to draw as well as me! Or maybe better.
Hey! Are you in New York? Are you going to BEA? If so, come see me!!!
I'll be at the American Girl booth signing KANANI books on Wednesday from 1 - 2 pm, and on Thursday from 11 - noon!!!

Here's a hint(s) . . .

Meet My (Not So) Scary 7th Grader Teacher, Mr. Glick
"Is there a teacher who made an impact on your life?"
When someone from Brightwood School, were I attended first grade thru 8th, interviewed me, I replied, "Of course it would be Mr. Glick, but I'm sure he's no longer there."
Mr. Glick was my 7th grade teacher, and even though it had been YEARS since I was in his classroom, I never forgot him.
He scared everyone. He was loud and strict and demanded so much from you, and students quivered in his presence. And by the end of the school year . . . no one wanted to leave his classroom. He became "that teacher." You know, your favorite one. The one you never forget.
Here's what he looked like way back then . . .
So, during that phone call, I was shocked to find out that Mr. Glick was still teaching.
I contacted Mr. Glick and asked him if I could have his permission to portray him in STANFORD WONG FLUNKS BIG-TIME. When he said yes, I beefed up the role of "Teacher Torturer," as Stanford called him.
In the paperback AFTER WORDS version of the book, I talk about Mr. Glick . . .
Mr. Glick retired a few of years ago, but that only lasted four months. He has a passion for teaching, and soon found himself as a substitute in North Carolina.
Last week he was back in Alhambra, CA substitute teaching there, as he does from time to time. I was lucky enough to catch up with him.
Would he be the same, I wondered? Would he still challenge me to live up to his high standards? What if he found out that I goof off a lot when I should be writing?
Later, Son came home. He's in middle school and about the same age I was when Mr. Glick was my teacher. Son had heard the stories about how strict Mr. Glick was, and then found out firsthand . . .
Did homework get done fast that night? You bet.
After, Mr. Glick went out to dinner. Imagine! Going out to dinner with your teacher? If when I was twelve, someone said, "You will dine with Mr. Glick someday," I would have thought they were nuts.
It was a great meal, but an even greater evening because I got to be with Mr. Glick.
Here's to all the wonderful teachers out there! If you have one that made an impact on your life, find them and tell them.
BTW, if any of you are going to BEA in NYC next week, come by and see me! I'll be at the American Girl booth signing KANANI Girl of the Year 2011 books on Wednesday from 1pm - 2 pm, and also on Thursday from11 a.m. to noon!!!

Where Do You Get Your Ideas?
Where do you get your ideas?
I think that's the question I get asked most when I do school visits . . .
In this INTERVIEW, I talk about what it's like when a great idea whacks you (that would be me) in the head.
My office is also filled with so much stuff, er, inspiration, that a lot of ideas are born there . . .
Other things like these inspire me . . .
I also get inspired by art. Like this summer when Peepy and I went to Paris . . .
But some of my favorite art is closer to home. Recently Peeps and I popped into the Street Art exhibit at the Geffin Contemporary at MOCA . . .
Not only was the art in the museum, but on the nearby streets, too . . .
Oh! And when we were in downtown, we saw these guys rolling this giant heart with a Band-Aid on it through the streets. (I wonder what the story is behind that?)
However, most of my best ideas come from my muse.

My Agent and Me (and Dan Santat)
"Do I need an agent?"
That's something people ask me all the time. Well, that and "would you like paper or plastic?"
The answer is well, yeah. Duh. We could all do well to have James Bond on our side. However, if you are asking about a literary agent, then the answer is yes or no. It really depends on you, and the would-be agent.
I didn't have an agent for my first two novels, MILLICENT MIN, GIRL GENIUS and STANFORD WONG FLUNKS BIG-TIME.
Here's the video for MILLICENT . . .
And here's an excerpt about farts from STANFORD . . .
Arthur Levine, editor of the HARRY POTTER series (here's Ms. Rowling with Son) and other fabulous books, discovered me languishing in the slush pile. That's the place where unagented, unsolicited books, go, and it's very cold there.
Then, when MILLICENT MIN won the Sid Fleischman Humor Award, agents started calling me. But I held off, until I met Jodi Reamer from Writers House. We met at the annual SCBWI Summer Conference in 2004, and she's been my agent ever since . . .
(Dan Santat illustrated Jodi's awesome business cards. The photo's kinda fuzzy, but it depicts hand signs for "agent," "lawyer" and "blackbelt," because Jodi is all three. Yes, that's right. My agent could kill you with her bare hands, and then sue you, or cut a book deal.)
BTW, this is what the hallway at Writers House looks like . . .
We're all business, my agent and me. Take, for example, our Annual Summit where we discuss the literary marketplace, my career, and the future of e-books . . .
After this year's Disneyland frolic, er Annual Summit, Jodi and I, and Dan, who's a good friend of mine and the illustrator of the BOBBY books, and is also a client of Jodi's (did you get all that), went out to a fancy schmantzy restaurant . . .
Only, when we got there, the hostess took one look at Dan and told him he would have to eat outside.
Why? Could it be because he wasn't wearing PANTS??? (For the record, he did have shorts on.)
Even though he had a spare pair of jeans in the car and changed, he and Jodi had a disagreement over proper dining attire . . .
Other than that, the dinner was lovely . . .
(Yes, I am holding a plate of garlic crab, and wearing a bib.)
There was even a river of Koi under glass, and a pretty bathroom . . .
Speaking of dining, last weekish, I also got to hang out with Bonnie Verburg, Scholastic's editor-in-chief of Blue Sky Press. She's also Mark Teague's and soon-to-be-author, and my computer savior, Scott Bly's editor . . .
Speaking of speaking of dining, can you guess who I had lunch with recently?
Hint: It's my pal, musician Dave Kinnoin.
I often put friend's names in my books and in SO TOTALLY EMILY EBERS, it reads, ". . . Mr. Kinnoin won the lottery. He climbed up on the desk and shouted, 'Okay you little weenies, you're never going to see me in a classroom again!' Then he burst into tears and ran out of the room."

(Even) More Famous Authors at the LA TIMES Book Fest
Okay! We last blogged about Mother's Day, which I contend should be extended to a week. So now we return to the LA TIMES Festival of Books!
If we thought the first day was jam packed with book stuff, there was much more in store!
The second day kicked off for us with a book signing of our Arthur A. Levine/Scholastic novels, including WARP SPEED. Here we are with uber author Blake Nelson . . .
There were lots of other Scholastic authors hanging around, like "Everyone's Favorite Author" Mark Teague . . .
The last time Mark and I were at this festival together, there were tragic consequences -- at least for me . . .

Peepy was thrilled to see her guardian, Pam Munoz Ryan, especially since she was thirsty and Pam had a beverage . . .
Pam always takes good care of Peeps, and earlier this year when Peepy went to Pam's house, Pam set her up on a date . . .
It was fun wandering around the book festival and seeing old friends, and new. The LAYAs (LA Young Adult Authors) were in full force at the LAYAPalooza . . .
Who put it all together? Why, the LOS ANGELES REVIEW OF BOOKS editor, author Cecil Castellucci, that's who!
After the LAYAPalooza, we ran into Andrew Smith, who gave Son an ARC of STICK, his new book, plus some other great swag!!!
Oh, look! It's Lisa McMann and Neal Shusterman . . .
The last time we saw Neal we went to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter together . . .
Emmy-winning creator of Wow! Wow! Wubbzy (and celebrity judge), Bob Boyle was there signing HUGO AND THE REALLY, REALLY, REALLY LONG STRING . . .
Soon it was that time. Yes, we needed a snack! So we called on our pal National Book Awardee Judy Blundell to give us a tour of the Green Room . . .
Sonya Sones was there with her husband, Bennett Tramor. He wrote/produced SAVED BY THE BELL, and in another life, Judy wrote some of the books from the popular TV series. However, they had never met . . . but we got that taken care of!!!
I wasn't the only one with a camera. (Actually, I use my iPhone to take my photos.) Not only is Sonya a great author, but she's a great photographer, too. She took this photo of Judy and Moi . . .
(You're gonna want to check out the other authors Sonya's taken photos of HERE.)
But the event everyone at the festival was waiting for was this wresting match . . .
And the winner was . . . PEEPY! She was crowned the champ by non other than the winner of the LA TIMES Book Prize for YA Literature, Megan Whalen Turner!!!
HOORAY for another great Book Festival!!!
BTW, I am now on Twitter. It's causing me discombobulation, trying to figure it out . . .
. . . but it's fun! You can follow me on Twitter by CLICKING HERE.
